1 GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1 Use of this manual

This manual serves as a guideline for the safe and effective operation, maintenance and possible correction of minor malfunctions of the Mastervolt Mass Combi. This manual is valid for the following models:

1. Mass Combi 12/2000-100 230V AC, art. No 36012000. 2. Mass Combi 24/2000-60 230V AC, art. No 36022000.

It is therefore obligatory that every person who works on or with the Mass Combi must be completely familiar with the contents of this manual, and that he/she carefully follows the instructions contained herein. Installation of, and work on the Mass Combi, may once be carried out by qualified, authorized and trained personal, consistent with the locally applicable standards and taking into consideration the safety guidelines and measures (chapter 2 of this manual).

1.2 Warranty specifications Mastervolt guarantees that this unit has been built according to the legally applicable standards and specifications. Should work take place, which is not in accordance with the guidelines, instructions and specifications contained in this users manual, then damage may occur and/or the unit may not fulfill its specifications. All of these matters may mean that the guarantee may become invalid. The warranty is limited to the costs of repair and/or replacement of the product. Costs for installation labor or shipping of the defective parts are not covered by this warranty.

1.3 Quality During their production and prior to their delivery, all of our units are exhaustively tested and inspected. The warranty period is two years after date of purchase.

1.4 Validity of this manual All of the specifications, provisions and instructions contained in this manual apply solely to the Mastervolt-delivered standard versions of the Mastervolt Mass Combi.

1.5 Liability Mastervolt can accept no liability for any consequential damage due to use of the Mastervolt Mass Combi, possible errors in the manual and the results thereof.

1.6 Identification label The identification labels are located at the backside and in the connection compartment (see paragraph 5.4.3) of the Mass Combi. Important technical information required for service, maintenance & secondary delivery of parts can be derived from the identification label. Therefore the identification label must not be removed!

1.7 Changes to the Mastervolt Mass Combi Modifications to the Mastervolt Mass Combi may only be carried out by Mastervolt. This is not applicable for DIP-switches (see paragraph 7.7) which are used for making user settings.

2 SAFETY GUIDELINES AND WARNINGS

2.1 Warnings and symbols Safety instructions and warnings are marked in this manual by the following symbols: CAUTION! Special data, restrictions and rules with regard to preventing damage. WARNING! A WARNING refers to possible injury to the user or significant material damage to the Mass Combi if the installer / user does not (carefully) follow the procedures.

2.2 Use for intended purpose • The Mass Combi is constructed as per the applicable safety-technical

guidelines. • Use the Mass Combi only:

− for the charging of 12V or 24V lead acid (Gel, AGM or open) batteries and the supply of consumers connected to these batteries, in permanent systems;

− connected to a dedicated double pole circuit breaker (MCB) or earth leakage in the AC-input and in the Short break output;

− with a fuse, protecting the wiring between Mass Combi output and battery;

− in a technical correct condition; − in a closed, well-ventilated room, protected against rain,

moisture, dust and non condensing circumstances; − observing the instructions in this manual. WARNING! Never use the Mass Combi in situations where there is danger of gas or dust explosion!

• Use other than as mentioned above is not considered to be

consistent with the intended purpose. Mastervolt is not liable for any damage resulting from unintended use.

2.3 Organizational measures The installer / user must always: • have access to this manual; • be familiar with the contents of this manual. This applies particularly

to Chapter 2, Safety Guidelines & Warning.

2.4 Installation, maintenance and repair If the Mass Combi is switched off during maintenance and/or repair activities, it should be secured against unexpected and unintentional switching on: • remove the fuse(s) from the AC supply or; • switch off the AC circuit breaker of your electrical system; • switch off the connection with the batteries and remove the battery

fuse of the Mass Combi; • be sure that third parties cannot reverse the measures taken.

2.5 Warning of special dangers • Secure the DC wiring with a fuse, according to the guidelines in this

user manual. • Connection and protection of your electrical system must be done in

accordance with local standards. • Do not work on the Mass Combi or the electrical installation if it is

connected to a power source. Only allow changes in your electrical system to be carried out by qualified electricians.

• Check the wiring at least once a year. Defects such as loose connections, heat damaged cables etc. must be corrected immediately.

• Not only the batteries, but the Mass Combi as well can become a projectile if your transport is involved in an accident! Ensure adequate and secure mounting and always use suitable handling equipment for transportation.

• Except for the connection compartment, see paragraph 5.4.3, the cabinet of the Mass Combi must not be opened. There are no serviceable parts inside the cabinet. Only qualified, authorized and trained electrician installers are authorized to open the connection compartment.

3 TECHNOLOGY 3.1 Introduction

This user’s manual describes the installation and use of the Mastervolt Mass Combi series from Mastervolt. This unit performs the following distinct functions: • DC to AC power inverting; • automatic transfer switching between inverter power and incoming

AC power; • three-stage automatic battery charger.

3.2 Description of several functions

3.2.1 The inverter

The inverter provides voltage and frequency regulated AC power from a battery bank. To protect your batteries low and high battery cutout circuits and overload protection have been implemented. Considerable momentary surge power is available for starting-up electric motors. High efficiency insures long battery usage between recharges. A built in idle circuit can reduce battery power consumption when the inverter is unloaded.

3.2.2 The transfer switch

The transfer switch allows the Mass Combi to be connected to an external AC source. A part of the external AC power is used to feed the “Short Break” output; the remaining is switched through the unit to operate the battery charger. The power sharing feature (see 3.3.2) constantly senses the AC current being used by the battery charger and the appliances connected to the output. It automatically reduces the power consumption of the battery charger if the total power consumption exceeds the preset limitation which equals the external input circuit breaker rating or the capacity of your generator. In case of no external AC- power the load connected to the “Short break” Mass Combi will be fed within its capacity by the inverter. The “Power” output is directly connected to the AC-input of the Mass Combi and can not be switched off. The loads connected to this output are not supplied with the inverter power.

3.2.3 The battery charger

The built-in battery charger is electronically controlled. It is designed to rapidly and optimally recharge wet, gel cell deep-cycle batteries or AGM batteries. Battery charging is accomplished in 3 automatic stages: BULK, ABSORPTION and FLOAT which gives an optimal charging for your battery. With an external AC source connected, the Mass Combi charger also serves the function of an AC to DC converter to supply DC loads which are connected to the battery. Simple, automatic operation is made possible by the microprocessor that is the brain of the inverter/charger combination. In most cases, the unit is left on and no attention or maintenance is required. Besides the main charger/inverter connectors the Mass Combi is fitted with a slave charger output that can be used for maintaining the starter battery. The slave charger output has the same voltage as the main charger. When the starter battery has a different voltage or is used frequently Mastervolt recommends a separate charger.

3.2.4 Battery Temperature Sensor

In a well designed battery charger there is a relation between the charging voltage and the battery temperature to protect your batteries against overcharging. This to extend the life of your batteries. For correct charging the charging characteristics must be adjusted (automatically and in real time) according to the actual battery temperature to ensure that batteries are charged in a fast and save way, but not overcharged. For this reason a battery temperature sensor is included and the Mass Combi is equipped with a temperature compensated charge algorithm.

3.2.5 Remote panels

There are three remote panels available for the Mass Combi. The Inverter Charger Control (ICC) panel and the AC Power Control (APC) panel are specially designed for the Mass Combi. The Mass Inverter Charger Control (MICC) is a universal panel. However, it is not possible to connect all thee panels at the same time. Mastervolt recommends to use the combination ICC and APC or to use the MICC panel only. The ICC panel provides the same functions as the user panel on the Mass Combi. However, with this remote panel you have the convenience to operate the Mass Combi remotely. This ICC remote panel and remote cable (6m) are included with the delivery of the Mass Combi. The APC panel has extended functions such as setting remotely the Power sharing value and monitoring your “AC-load”. This APC remote panel is optional (art. No 70-40-5010). The Masterlink MICC panel (art. No 70-40-3105) is a digital remote panel that has additional features compared to the ICC and APC panel. This MICC panel enables you to switch on and off your Mass Combi remotely and read-out the exact state-of-charge of your battery by means of a shunt. When the battery is reaching a low voltage set point or a low state-of-charge an alarm will be raised. This can be used to startup the generator. The remote panels are connected to the Mass Combi via a communication cable with two RJ 12 (telephone) connectors. The maximum length of communication cable should not exceed 15m. The cables are available in the following length: 6m (art. No 6502001030), 10m (art. No 6502100100) and 15m (art. No 6502100150).

3.2.6 Things you should know

This is a class A product. In a domestic environment, this product may cause radio interference in which case the user may be required to take adequate measures. A transfer between inverter and charge modes of operation may temporarily take place when the product is subjected to electrostatic discharge.

3.2.7 Intended use

The Mastervolt Mass Combi is intended: • as a DC to AC inverter/battery charger; • for use in recreational and professional vehicles; • for use in recreational and professional marine vessels; • for use in residential solar applications; • to be permanently installed, not portable;

3.3 Special features

The Mass Combi has the following special features; power saving, power sharing and power support. These features are used to save energy when no load is present, divide the power among the connected loads and charger to prevent the external AC input fuse to blow or support the external AC-input or generator when temporarily more power is needed.

3.3.1 Power saving mode

In the inverter mode the Mass Combi has a built-in automatic power saving feature that reduces battery power consumption when no load is present on the “Short break” output. Response from idle is instant. In most cases the operation is not noticeable. The 4 modes can be set by means of DIP-switches, see paragraph 7.7. The Mass Combi can operate in one of the following modes:

Mass Combi power saving modes Mode Explanation

High power The power saving mode is switched off. The inverter is fully operating and the output voltage is 230V AC. This is the default setting.

Idle 40VA

Idle 150VA

The inverter reduces, below the 40VA or 150VA connected load, the output voltage almost to zero. The Mass Combi scans the “Short break” outlet with pulses of 230V every 2½ seconds. When it detects a load that is larger than 40VA or 150VA, it switches on the inverter automatically. Small loads such as clocks in VCR’s or micro waves are most likely not to work on this mode.

Economy mode The inverter reduces the output voltage to 208V AC if the connected load drops below 250VA. The output voltage will return to 230V AC if the connected load rises above 250 VA. Small loads as clocks in VCR’s and micro waves will perform equal whether the inverter is running in the economy state or is on. The saving is approximately 10%.

3.3.2 Power sharing

With the Power sharing setting you can set the current level at the AC-input of the Mass Combi in order to prevent the external input fuse from tripping. When the total consumption reaches the preset current level the charger current will be reduced. The AC-input current consumption can be limited by means of the DIP-switches locally in the Mass Combi, see paragraph 7.7.2, or you can use the optional APC or MICC remote control panel. The default value is set to protect a 25A input fuse. With the power sharing on the remote APC-panel the AC-input current can be reduced by pressing the set-button. However, if the setting for the maximum current on the Mass Combi is limited by means of the DIP-switches to e.g. 10A it is only possible to set the current with the APC-panel to 4A, 6A and 10A. The power sharing value should be set to match the circuit breaker value, which protects the incoming AC-power from the external AC-source. For instance, in camping sites or marinas (with 230V AC systems), a 6A or 10A AC-power circuit is available, Figure 3-1. When the circuit breaker is set at 10A and the total AC current is exceeding this value then the Mass Combi reduces the charge current, Figure 3-2.

3.3.3 Power support

To prevent the external AC-input from an overload situation, the load which is connected to the short break output can be switched automatically from the external AC-input to the AC-output of the inverter. As soon as the total load of the AC-input is higher than the selected power sharing level, the power assist function will be switched on, see Figure 3-3. The AC-input is now used to feed the “Power” group only. However, if you increase the power consumption of the Power group further and it exceeds the value of the AC-input fuse from shore or generator this fuse will trip.

The Mass Combi connects the “Short break” group back to the AC-input if the total current from the power group and short break group is less then the “Power sharing” value for about 10 minutes. In the above example 10A. The charger starts when the load reduces further and the total current drops below the “Power sharing” value.

4 OPERATION The Mass Combi is a fully automatic inverter / charger system. Under normal circumstances there is no need for adjustment or operation besides switching on and off. WARNING! Never disconnect any of the wiring during operation of the Mass Combi.

4.1 Indicators The operation of the Mass Combi is controlled and checked by microprocessors. If the Mass Combi is activated and as long as none of the red indicators are illuminated, no failure is detected and the unit is operating normally. For the position of the indicators and power switch on the cabinet mounted control panel see Figure 4-1.

4.2 Switching On and Off The only control on the Mass Combi itself is the power switch (10) on the front of the unit (see Figure 4-1). This switch controls On, Off and Ch. (Charger only).

4.2.1 Switching On

Set the power switch (10) of the Mass Combi to the “On”-position. If you use a remote control panel, press the on/off button on the remote control panel (See paragraph 4.4). Expect a three till five second delay when the power switch is turned on before the unit is activated. All indicators are illuminated for a second. Then the LED’s (3) and (4), which are representing the digits upfront the dot, and LED’s (5) and (6) which are representing the digit after the dot, are showing the version number of the software by flashing. See the table below, the software version in this example is 1.32:

Table 4-2: Software version Then the unit is activated and the actual status of the unit is displayed. If the AC-source power is disconnected or unavailable, the unit will come on as an inverter. Inverter overload protection, built idle mode circuitry, transfer switching, power sharing and battery charger regulation will all function automatically.

4.2.2 Switching Off

Set the power switch of the Mass Combi to the “Off”-position. If you use a remote control panel, press the on/off button on the remote control panel (See paragraph 4.4). The Mass Combi stops and all the indicators go off. The “Short” break output is disconnected and will become powerless. NOTE! When the power switch is in the “Off”-position, it overrides the remote control panel. In this off state it is not possible to start the Mass Combi remotely. WARNING! Switching off the Mass Combi with the power switch on the front of the cabinet does not cut off the connection to the batteries or the AC-source. Therefore the “Power” output is still active.

4.2.3 Switching Ch. (Charger only)

When you move the power switch of the Mass Combi to the “Ch.”-position. The Mass Combi is only working like a charger. This setting is useful if you want to keep your batteries charged and maintained in case you are away i.e. in the winter time. Now your batteries are spared when the AC-source fails. If you use the remote panel ICC or MICC you can still switch-on the inverter, if AC-source is not available. If AC-source is available and the Mass Combi is operating in the charger mode, the user panel shows the actual status of the system.

4.3 Protections The Mass Combi is protected against overload, short circuit, over heating and under and over voltage. The user can readout the detected failure from the local user panel or from one of the (optional) remote control panels by means of indicators. The unit is not protected against reversing polarity of the DC-input, AC voltage on the DC-input and serious over voltage (>260VAC) on the AC-in and AC-feedback.

4.3.1 Transfer switch overload protection

The transfer switch of the Mass Combi is protected against overload. When the current through the transfer switch of the Mass Combi is too high (>25A) the thermal “Short break” fuse is switched off and the Mass Combi shuts down (see Figure 5-3). To correct this situation reduce the load connected to the “Short break” group of the Mass Combi, wait for a minute or two and reset the thermal fuse on the Combi by pushing the button.

4.3.2 Output overload or short circuit

In case of overload or short circuit in the inverter mode, the 100% LED (1) on the user panel is illuminated red and the output voltage of the Mass Combi is limited. The Mass Combi shuts down if this overload or failure lasts longer than 5 seconds. The Mass Combi will automatically restart after shutdown. After 5 failed start attempts the Mass Combi shuts down permanently and the inverter LED on the user panel will flash. You can restart the Mass Combi only by switching the unit manually off and on with the power switch on the Mass Combi after the overload is removed or failure is solved.

4.3.3 Overheating In the event of overheating the Mass Combi shuts down. In the inverter mode the LED’s (5) and (7) and in the charger mode the LED’s (5) and (8) are illuminated. The Mass Combi is automatically powered up when the temperature drops below the factory default threshold. Overheating is most likely caused by: • heavy or non-resistive loads operating for a longer time • high ambient temperature • disrupted air flow (dust or too less space)

4.3.4 Under and over voltage

The AC-input of the Mass Combi is, within limits, protected against over and under voltage. See specifications in paragraph 7.2. The Mass Combi will switch to inverter mode if the AC-input voltage is out of operating range and will switch back if the AC-input voltage is present again. The DC-input of the Mass Combi is also, within limits, protected against over and under voltage. See specifications in paragraph 7.2. The Mass Combi switches off if the DC-input voltage is out of range.

4.4 Inverter Charger Control panel (included) This remote panel is included with the delivery of the Mass Combi. With this Inverter Charger Control (ICC) panel you can operate and check the actual status of the Mass Combi remotely. The panel is connected to the “Remote”-port of the Mass Combi. For the position of the indicators at the remote control panel see Figure 4-2.

4.5 AC Power Control panel (optional) The optional AC Power Control remote panel enables you to limit your AC-input current to the Mass Combi according to the available input current from shore, generator or power outlet (power sharing). This is used to prevent the fuse from blowing due to overload. For the position of the indicators at the remote control panel see Figure 4-3. This panel is orderable via article number 70405010.

Figure 4-3 : AC Power Control The “AC-load” gauge (1) indicates the total amount of used capacity of the total available AC-input power from shore, generator or power outlet and is in proportion to the selected “Power sharing”. The “Power sharing” gauge (3) displays the setting of the power sharing or power support function. The predefined values are “4A-6A-10A-16A-25A” and can be changed with the Set-button (4). For example: you have selected 10A. This means that the maximum available AC-current is 10A and this maximum is represented as 100% on the AC-load gauge. This also corresponds to a maximum load of 2300W (10A x 230V AC). If you use only 5A or 1150W then the “AC-load” gauge shows 50%. When the Mass Combi operates in inverter mode then the “AC-load” gauge indicates the total generated power and voltage is indicated by the “AC-voltage” gauge.

4.6 Alarm function The battery charger is equipped with an integrated alarm function. External equipment can be controlled by the potential free contacts of this alarm (see 5.5). The maximum switch current of the relay is 1A. The relay will be activated when the DC-voltage is out of range, see Table 4-3, after a delay of 30 seconds. 4.7 AC-outputs The Mass Combi has two AC-outputs available; the “Power” output and the “Short break” output. The “Power” output is directly connected to the AC-input and AC on this output is only available if the AC-input from shore, generator or outlet is present. This output can be used for large loads like a hot water boiler or electrical heating. The “Short break” output is connected to the AC-input or to the inverter via the transfer switch. During a switchover the loads connected to this output are not supplied with AC-power for a very short period of time (short break). The moment of switching is determined by the availability or the absence of the AC-source or depending on the setting of the power sharing function (see 3.3.3). This output can be used to make life more comfortable at places were there is no or too little AC-power from shore or power outlet or undesired with respect to noise (generator).

4.8 Maintenance

For reliable and optimum function examine your electrical installation on a regular base, at least once a year. Defects such as loose connections, burnt wiring etc. must be corrected immediately. If necessary, use a soft clean cloth to clean the cabinet. Never use any liquids, acids and/or scourers.

5 INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING 5.1 Before you start

During installation and commissioning of the Mass Combi the Safety Guidelines and Measurements are applicable at all times. See chapter 2 of this manual. After unpacking, check the Mass Combi for possible damage. Check from the identification label whether the battery voltage is the same as the DC-input voltage of the Mass Combi (e.g. 24V battery set for a 24V input voltage). Also check that the AC output voltage and output power of the Mass Combi satisfies loading requirements.

5.2 Things you need

Make sure you have all the parts you need to install the Mass Combi: • The Mass Combi (included) • An Inverter Charger Control panel with a grey mounting-case

(included) • A modular communication cable (included 6m, maximum length

15m) to connect the inverter charger control panel to the Mass Combi, see Figure 7-3: Modular cable, cross wired.

• A battery temperature sensor with cable and plug (included). • One DC-cable to connect the positive DC connection (+) of the Mass

Combi to the plus pole of the DC-distribution; for specifications see paragraph 7.1, intended length: 2m / 6ft, colour: preferably red or at least a different colour to make a clear distinction between the positive and negative wire from the battery.

• One DC-cable to connect the negative DC connection (–) of the Mass Combi to the negative pole of the DC-distribution; for specifications see paragraph 7.1, intended length: 2m / 6ft, colour: preferably black or at least a different colour to make a clear distinction between the positive and negative wire from the battery.

• One DC-fuse holder with a DC-fuse, to be integrated in the positive DC-cable. For specifications see paragraph 7.1.

• 4 screws / bolts (Ø 6mm) (with plugs) to mount the cabinet to a surface.

• One double insulated three wire cable to connect the AC input of the Mass Combi to an external power source (e.g. a shore connection or a generator set); preferable wire colours according to the locally applicable regulations. The wire diameter is depending on your electrical installation.

• One double insulated three wire cable to connect the external load to the AC “Power” output of the Mass Combi; preferable wire colours according to the locally applicable regulations. The wire diameter is depending on your electrical installation.

• One double insulated cable to connect the external load to the AC “Short Break” output of the Mass Combi; preferable wire colours according to the locally applicable regulations. The wire diameter is depending on your electrical installation.

• Batteries. Mastervolt recommends at least semi traction batteries.

*A cycle is one total discharge and one total charge. From the table it becomes clear that service life of starter batteries in cyclic applications can be less than two months. We recommend as a minimum tool kit: • Socket wrench 13mm to fix the DC-input (battery) cables • Flat blade screw driver 0,6 x 3,5 mm to fix the screw terminals • Tools to fix the screws / bolts (Ø 6mm) with plugs to mount the

cabinets to a surface • Philips screw driver to open the connection area of the Mass Combi

5.3 Environment

Obey the following stipulations during installation: • The Mass Combi is designed for indoor use only. • Ambient temperature: 0 ... 60°C; (power derating above 40°C to

decrease the internal heat sink temperature) • Humidity: 0-95% non condensing • Mount the Mass Combi on a solid surface, with the connecting

cables downwards. • Make sure that the hot air that is developed during operation can be

discharged. The Mass Combi must be mounted in such a way that obstruction of the airflow through the ventilation openings will be prevented.

• No objects must be located within a distance of 10 cm / 4 inch around the Mass Combi.

• Do not locate the Mass Combi in the same compartment as the batteries.

• Do not install the Mass Combi straight above the batteries because of possible corrosive sulphur fumes.

5.4 Installation

5.4.1 Mounting of the cabinet

Take the following steps to mount the cabinet: 1. Determine for the four mounting spots on the basis of the outline

drawings (paragraph 7.4.1). 2. Fix the screws (Ø 6mm) into the surface but do not tighten them

entirely. 3. Place the housing over the screws Figure 5-1.

4. Fix the housing by fastening the screws securely.

5.4.2 Mounting of the ICC panel

The installation of the ICC panel is not required for the operation of the Mass Combi. If you want to use the panel then follow the steps below to mount the remote ICC panel: 1. Make a cut out using the outline drawings of Figure 7-2. The

minimum depth required for installing the panel is 20mm with the mounting box. For good visibility avoid installing the panel in direct sunlight.

2. Connect the RJ12 cross-wired modular communication cable (included 6m, maximum length 15m) through the hole of the gray case and plug the modular connector into the ICC panel.

3. Connect the communication cable to the Remote input of the Mass Combi.

5.4.3 Opening the connection compartment

See Figure 5-2. Steps:

1. Loosen the two Philips screws A and B that secure the front cover plate for two turns.

2. Slide the front cover plate from the cabinet (C) (downwards). 3. The terminals and cable glands are now accessible. Close the connection compartments again prior to commissioning of the Mass Combi.

5.4.4 Wiring

The wiring is connected inside the connection compartment. If necessary, the cabling can be fed from the top to the bottom side of the cabinet along the back of the cabinet. Feed all wires and cables through the cable glands provided. The routing of the wires has influence on the EMC behavior of the system in which the Mass Combi is a component. This is caused by the fact that wires are excellent receivers and transmitters of radio frequency electro magnetic interference. Most problems originate from mutual interference between wires and cables. Therefore you should separate AC and DC cables and lay the cables in metal cable trunk and connect this trunk to ground. The metal of the trunk offers a low resistance to interference currents, so that these currents run via the trunk to ground. WARNING! Short circuiting or reversing polarity may lead to serious damage to the batteries, the Mass Combi, the cabling and/or the terminal connections. Fuses between the batteries and the Mass Combi can not prevent damage caused by reversed polarity. The damage as a result of reverse polarity is detectable by the service department and is not covered by the warranty. WARNING! Be sure that all AC and DC systems are switched off or disconnected during installation. Remove the DC-fuse(s) from the DC-distribution and/or disconnect the plus connections of the batteries prior to installation. WARNING! The ground wire offers protection only if the cabinet of the Mass Combi is connected to the system ground. Connect the inverter’s earth terminal (PE) to the hull or the chassis. WARNING! Under-sized cables and/or loose connections can cause dangerous overheating of the cables and/or terminals. Therefore use the proper size and tighten all connections well, in order to limit transition resistance as far as possible.

3. Run the AC wiring between the “Power” output of the Mass Combi and the power distribution group. Feed the wiring through the cable glands of the cabinet, and then connect the wiring to the OUTPUT POWER terminal. Fix the phase line wire to terminal L, the neutral wire to terminal N and the ground wire to terminal PE.

4. Run the AC wiring between the “Short break” output of the Mass Combi and the short break distribution group. Feed the wiring through the cable glands of the cabinet, and then connect the wiring to the OUTPUT SHORT BREAK terminal. Fix the phase line wire to terminal L, the neutral wire to terminal N and the ground wire to terminal PE.

5. If you want to install the ICC remote control panel, run the communication cable between the Mass Combi and the panel. Connect the RJ12 connector to the “REMOTE”-input (Data Bus Connections) NOTE: the Mass Combi can also be operated without the remote control ICC panel.

6. Run the DC-cables between the DC-distribution and the Mass Combi. Feed the cables through the cable glands of the cabinet, and then fix the cable lugs M8 to the wire ends. Connect the red cable to the plus-connection, the black cable to the minus connection. Do not install the DC-fuse of the DC-distribution before the entire installation is completed (see paragraph 5.7).

7. Attach the temperature sensor to the battery and run the cable into the Mass Combi and connect the RJ12 connecter to the “TEMP.SENS”-input (Data Bus Connections).

8. If you also want to make use of the possibility to maintain your starter batteries run a 2,5mm² /AWG15 red cable with a fuse holder between starter battery and Mass Combi. Fix the cable with an insulated faston to the slave charger output.

9. Tighten all cable glands to ensure the pull relief. 10. Check all wiring and connections.

5.5 Alarm contacts Connecters 1 to 4 are internally linked as follows: Figure 5-4 : Alarm contacts

The alarm contact is switched to “Normally Open” in case of a alarm situation, see paragraph 4.6.

5.6 Settings

There are two eightfold DIP-switches on the top side of the printed circuit board (PCB), see Figure 7-4. If necessary, you can set the DIP-switches for specific applications of the Mass Combi. See paragraph 7.7 for adjustment. Adjust the DIP-switches prior to commissioning the Mass Combi.

5.7 Commissioning after installation WARNING! Check the polarity of all wiring before commissioning: plus connected to plus (red cables), minus connected to minus (black cables).

Follow the steps described below to switch on the Mass Combi. 1. Close the front cover plate of the connection compartment of the

Mass Combi. Beware that the cabling does not obstruct the cooling fans and air flow.

2. Place the DC-fuse(s) of the DC-distribution to connect the batteries to the Mass Combi. When inserting the DC-fuse(s) a small spark can occur, caused by the capacitors used in the Mass Combi. This is normal.

3. If the inverter charger control panel is installed, move the On/Off/ Ch.-switch to the desired position see paragraph 4.4. If not, move the On/Off/Ch.-switch to the “On”-position.

Now the Mass Combi is ready for operation! After approximately five seconds the Mass Combi will switch on, see paragraph 4.2. If this is not the case, check the wire connection for errors. Consult the trouble shooting chapter 6.

5.8 Decommissioning If it is necessary to put the Mass Combi out of operation, follow the instructions in order of succession as described below: 1. Move the On/Off/Ch.-switch of the Mass Combi to the “Off”-position. 2. Remove the DC-fuse(s) of the DC-distribution and/or disconnect

connect the batteries. 3. Remove the AC-fuse(s) of the AC-input and/or disconnect the AC-

5.9 Storage and transportation

When not installed, store the Mass Combi in the original packing, in a dry and dust free environment. Always use the original packing for transportation. Contact your local Mastervolt Service Centre for further details if you want to return the apparatus for repair.

5.10 Re-installation To reinstall the Mass Combi, follow the instructions as described in chapter 5.4.

If you cannot solve a problem with the aid of the table below, contact your local Mastervolt Service Centre. See also Figure 4-1.

Battery type The factory setting for the battery type is optimal for most installations. In some applications however, it is desirable to change this setting. Adjust the Mass Combi to the applied batteries by adjusting DIP switches SW4 and SW5. Wrong adjustment can cause damage to your batteries which is not covered by the warranty.

During equalizing the batteries are brought into the gas state and is it possible that the permitted load voltages are exceeded. Therefore appropriate measures must be taken, e.g. disconnect all loads from the battery and ventilate the room. For these reasons use of the equalizing mode should only be executed by trained technical engineers. An equalizing charge can be necessary after very deep discharges and/or inadequate charges. This has to be carried out according to the specifications of the manufacturer of the batteries.

Combi / Inverter control The ON/OFF switch at the Inverter Charger Control panel has different functions depending on the setting of DIP-switch number 7. When the Mass Combi is switched off by means of the power switch at the front then it is completely off (see 4.2.2). However, in this off state it is not possible to start the Mass Combi remotely via the ICC remote panel. This is independent from the setting of DIP-switch number 7. When you want to charge your batteries only and you do not want to start the inverter function when AC-in fails then set the power switch in the Ch. (Charger only see 4.2.3). In this state it is not possible to switch the Mass Combi remotely on or off. This is independent from the setting of DIPP-switch number 7.

Then If you want … SW7

To switch the Mass Combi (inverter and charger function) remotely on or off. The power switch at the front of the Mass Combi has to be set to the ON position.

Off

To switch the inverter function of the Mass Combi remotely on or off when AC-in fails. With this setting the charger is always active when the AC-in is available. The power switch at the front of the Mass Combi has to be set to the ON position.
