Meeting Minutes for May

There was a small turnout to this month’s meeting. Only 11 people; where was everyone?

First off, Earl reported that there was no hail damage to the field. The storm got close, but didn’t hurt anything. Some members did get damage at their homes though, so help them out if they need it.

The Work Party went well. Most things got completed as planned. About the only things that didn’t get done were be-cause of material shortages. Thanks to everyone that helped. A note to everyone: the following people helped at the Work Party.

This completed their Work Bond for the year. Since you only have to do one thing for the club all year, these guys are done:

Shawn Leonard, Bob Salmon, Lee Overholt, Robert Millward, Larry Ott, Ron Martin, John Hogan, Larry Fuehrer, Milo Fritts, Greg Hight, Wayne Reynolds, George Kerr, Warren

Janssen, Earl Keffer, Amadeo Ramos, Jake Martinez, Larry Litsey, Don Thompson.

The Van Aire Fly-in is still scheduled for June 19th (11am-1pm). We won’t have details until the week before, but they want 4 or 5 planes and pilots. Static display and some demo flying for the full scale pilots that are flying in. We will setup on the north side of the runway and will fly on the south-east end of the runway. The full-scale runway will be our runway. The 4 or 5 pilots are allowed to partake in the food that will be there. If you’re interested in participating, contact Larry. He has the sign-up list.

Only July 10th, the club will have a Family Day/Kadet Fly at the field. Bring your Kadets (other trainers?) and your fami-lies and have a nice day. The club will supply burgers and dogs. Any other food is pot luck. Talk with Larry to coordinate food and discuss the event.

We’ll do a flight demo for the Grace Wanderers on Friday, July 30th. This will be an hour or so of flying at our field. They just want to see what we do and maybe a couple would like to try out a buddy box. We need volunteers and buddy boxes. Contact Larry and George Kerr if you’d like to participate.

Just another reminder to contact Lee if you’d like to volunteer for the Adams County Fair. It’s the first week of August.

The Christmas party has changed a lot. Larry got some complaints about the choice of El Jardin, so we canceled our res-ervation. That being said, we need ideas on what to do. Larry developed a form asking for a vote for El Jardin, The Double Tree (Platteville), or somewhere else. Larry will send this out in email to get a vote from the membership.

Earl had the tires on the trailer fixed. The field was constantly flattening them. The cost was $92 which Earl donated to the club. Thanks Earl.

Earl also got an estimate on doing the same for the tractor. It would be $400. It was decided to not do that at this time. If anyone has ideas on how to make the tires tougher for less than $400, please talk to Earl.

George Kerr bought the club two new fire extinguishers. Thanks George. The plan is to mount one in the building near the door.

Minutes Continued:

The club’s Safety Officer is Rick. Rick works on weekends, so he’s not able to make it out to the field when most mem-bers are there. Because of that, we need another Safety Officer to help Rick. This is an important position; we have a lot of mem-bers who are new to flying or new to our club. We have safety rules and procedures that need to be followed (for good reasons) and we need somebody to keep an eye out to make sure we’re all safe. We need a volunteer. Please contact Larry if you’re inter-ested.

This is a little late as of this writing, but on June 5th, the Cherry Creek club will be doing a Round Robin fly-in. Basi-cally, some of their members will drive around the area and attempt to fly at 4 or 5 fields. They will finish at their field for a BBQ. Nobody from our club seemed interested in joining them, but the members did vote to allow them to use our field for part of their circuit. Say hello if you see them.

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now (it’s on the web page), there will be no meetings at the field this summer. All meetings will be at Gander Mountain.

We’d like to get rid of the desk that’s in the building. It’s not used for anything and takes up a lot of space. If you want it talk to myself or Larry. If nobody wants it, we’ll see about just getting rid of it.

Similarly, we have a nice (brand new) filing cabinet that we’re not using. Anybody want it? Since this is in such nice shape, we’re hoping that someone will make a donation to club for it. Once again, talk to Larry if you’re interested.

Ron Martin has graciously accepted a position on the Board of Directors. We now have a full complement of board members and officers. Thanks everyone for doing it.

Lastly, Dennis won the fuel drawing. (He also drew the number… J)

That’s it. Have a good month.

Tom

From http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/a-10/ The A-10 Thunderbolt is also known as the Warthog, the 'flying gun' and the Tank buster. The aircraft was used extensively during Operation Desert Storm, in support of NATO operations in response to the Kosovo crisis, in Operation Enduring Free-dom in Afghanistan and in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The A-10 is a high-survivability and versatile aircraft, popular with pilots for the 'get home' effectiveness. The mission of the aircraft is ground attack against tanks, armored vehicles and installations, and close air support of ground forces. The air-craft is suitable for operation from forward air bases, with short take-off and landing capability. The aircraft has a long range (800 miles), high endurance and can loiter in the battle area. The maneuverability at low speed and low altitude (below 1,000ft) allows accurate and effective targeting and weapon delivery over all types of terrain. Over 367 A-10 aircraft are in service with the US Air Force, Air Combat Command, the US Air Force Reserve and the Air National Guard. The aircraft variants currently in service in the US Air force are A-10 (143), and A-10C (70); Reserve A-10 (46) and OA-10 (6); ANG, A-10 (84) and OA-10 (18). In June 2007, Boeing was awarded a $2bn contract for the A-10 wing replacement program. Boeing will supply 242 replace-ment wing sets by 2018. The precision engagement upgrade program for the A-10 includes enhanced precision target en-gagement capabilities, which will allow the deployment of precision weapons such as JDAM (joint direct attack munitions) and wind-corrected munitions dispenser (WCMD), as well as enabling an extension of the aircraft's service life to 2028. Improvements include: hands-on throttle and stick control, two new Raytheon Technical Services 5in×5in multifunction cock-pit displays, situational awareness data links (SADL), digital stores management system, integrated flight and fire control computer (IFFCC) from BAE Systems Platform Solutions for automated continuously computed weapons delivery, Sniper XR or Lightening targeting pods for precision-guided weapons and helmet-mounted sighting system. The single-seat cockpit is protected by all-round armor, with a titanium 'bathtub' structure to protect the pilot that is up to 3.8cm thick. The cockpit has a large bulletproof bubble canopy, which gives good all-round vision. The cockpit is equipped with a head-up display, which is used for targeting and weapon aiming, a Have-Quick secure radio communications system, inertial navigation and a tactical air navigation (TACAN) system. The aircraft has 11 stores pylons, providing an external load capacity of 7,260kg. There are three pylons under the fuselage and the loads can be configured to use either the centre-line pylon or the two flanking fuselage pylons. For weapon guid-ance, the aircraft can be fitted with Pave Penny laser guidance / electronic support measures, pod installed on the starboard fuselage pylon. Each wing carries four stores pylons: three outboard and one inboard of the wheel fairing. The A-10 can carry up to ten Maverick air-to-surface missiles. The Raytheon Maverick AGM-65 missile uses a variety of guidance systems, including imaging infrared guidance and warheads, including a high-penetration, 57kg conical-shaped charge warhead. Range is more than 45km. The A-10 can also carry the Sidewinder air-to-air missile, which is an all-aspect short-range mis-sile with maximum speed over Mach 2. The aircraft is armed with a General Dynamics GAU-8/A Avenger 30mm cannon, mounted in the nose of the aircraft. Using the cannon, the A-10 is capable of disabling a main battle tank from a range of over 6,500m. The cannon can fire a range of ammunition; including armor-piercing incendiary rounds (API) weighing up to 0.75kg, or uranium-depleted 0.43kg API rounds. The magazine can hold 1,350 rounds of ammunition. The pilot can select a firing rate of 2,100 or 4,200 rounds a minute. The two non-afterburning turbo fan engines, TF34-GE-100, supplied by General Electric, each supply 9,065lb thrust. The location of the engines, high on the fuselage, allows the pilot to fly the aircraft fairly easily with one engine inoperable.
