Dear Parents,
Hello to you all!
As I begin to write this newsletter I have just loosened my seatbelt on our flight to Canberra with the Year 6 students. At the moment we are at about 11277m altitude and with a ground speed of 885km/hr. After a little anxiety the students have started to relax and settle down. Especially as their dinner is about to be served!!!
GOVERNMENT FUNDING
Over the last few weeks you may seen or heard a great deal of speculation and discussion on the possible impact of the newly proposed Australian Government Funding model. The uncertainty for us as a Catholic system is what funding Catholic schools will receive. The ripple effect of this would be a significant increase in fees for Catholic schools.
Last Friday our Executive Director wrote to all families in Catholic Education to make them aware of the Federal Government’s announcement of the Federal education funding reform policy.
Although it is not good news for our Catholic schools, I would like to ensure our families that our School Board will work hard, as it does every year, to provide an affordable education for all students at Mary’s Mount Primary School.
As is the case every year, the School Board will, in November, work on the 2018 Budget. The schedule will be published at our AGM in November and will also be on our school website in November/December.
AUDIT
Last week, two representatives from Catholic Education of Western Australia audited our school. This was a whole school audit. The audit focused on a variety of operational areas in the school. Some of the areas that were audited were; policies, teacher programing, teacher practise, the National Quality Standards, various processes that we have in the school and the list goes on. It pleases me to make our community aware that our audit was a successful one. We now wait for the formal report, which we should receive next term. From that report there will be a couple of areas that we need to update and resubmit to CEWA.
Pause: dinner!!!
FAREWELL
This Friday we say farewell to our cleaners, Mr Jordan Bonomi and Mr Lou Conti.
Lou and Jordan have been with us for the last two years and although we don’t all see them (as they do work out of hours) they certainly are a part of our staff and go about their work quietly.
After reviewing our cleaning services, and this includes other cleaning agencies we have, the School Board has opted to contract all of our cleaning to an external company. This agency will do the work of four different agencies that we currently have.
I would like to wish both Jordan and Lou all the very best for the future and thank them for their service to Mary’s Mount Primary School. God bless you both!

LIGHTNING CARNIVAL
Congratulations to all our Year 5 and 6 students who represented the school last week at the annual Lightning Carnival. The students either played, Netball, Soccer or Football. All teams performed magnificently and all the students had an enormous amount of fun, which was the main idea.
Well done to the football team who won their final and to the soccer team for their second placing. The netball girls also got places, which was a great achievement.
I must thank Mrs Pollaers, Miss Smith and Mrs DeBarro for their efforts on the day and a huge thank you to our parent helpers and coaches, in particular, Mr Feast, Mr Hollis, Mrs Wincombe and Olivia Glass. Your efforts were greatly appreciated.
Thank you to you all for your support throughout the term. It has certainly been a busy term for all our stakeholders. The students have certainly worked very hard and produced some quality work throughout the term. Our parent body continues to help and support the school in so many ways and our teachers have had one of the busiest term but at the same time have been magnificent with their dedication and love of the students.

Mary’s Mount Catholic Identity Look Closer
Kindness magnifies: This weekend’s readings talk about the importance of welcoming God’s disciples. Elisha was welcomed by the woman above and beyond her obligations without expecting anything in return and she was rewarded for her kindness. Jesus also teaches that God sees our kindness to others and magnifies it. Why not do a simple act of kindness for someone today!
Prayer
Lord, we will sing forever of your love.
Make us your disciples and welcome your
Holy Spirit into our hearts. Amen.
Did you know?
BI Peter to Rot was born in 1912 in Papua New Guinea. He was educated by the Missionaries of the
Sacred Heart and became a full time husband, father and catechist. He was noted as a gentle and
involved husband and father who modelled a life of prayer and kindness. He was executed by the
Japanese in 1945 after a brief imprisonment for disturbing the Sacraments and opposing the
reintroduction of polygamy.
Reconciliation Certificates
This weekend is the final opportunity for our Year 3 students to be congratulated by our Parish and receive their certificate for the Sacrament of Reconciliation at Mass. Father Suresh looks forward to seeing the remaining students this weekend.
Laughter!
This week has been full on! You know what I am talking about, you’re on the go from the moment you wake up and you are that busy that you miss the opportunity to enjoy the simple things in life. This week I struggled to find something to write about, however, I was inspired by a mate of mine who also is in education and he discussed the topic of laugher in his newsletter!
I have many blessings in my role as an educator but for me the thing that makes me appreciate my job and think how lucky I am is when I see the students and staff truly happy. You know, the kind of happiness that comes when achieving something for the first time or sharing a joke with someone you care about. A lot like this picture, sheer laughter and enjoyment!
In today’s busyness laughter does not get the recognition it deserves. In asking Mrs Google about laughter she presented me with a quote from Charlie Chaplin: “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” I think this is so true. I know when our kids, staff and parents are laughing our school is a true place of joy. It represents being content, something that we often forget due to having a bad day, when we tend to focus on the negative things that have happened rather than the good things.
For me personally, laughter plays a huge part in my life. There are times I can be serious (I know you may find that hard to believe) but for those that are close to me, you know how I love to make others laugh and have a good laugh myself. Some of my fondest memories involve the laughing I do with my own girls at home. Izabella attempts to tell us jokes and usually messes them up which makes us laugh. Then there is Sienna who is an absolute cracker with her impersonations! These two can have
The Word One day Elisha was travelling and a wealthy woman asked him to have dinner. He regularly visited her on his travels. She said to her husband, “This must be a holy man of God, let us build a room for him to rest.” When Elisha visited he stayed in the room and asked his servant what he could do for this woman. Elisha called the woman to him and said, “This time next year you will hold a son in your arms.”
me in stitches and it is something I hope I never lose.
When I see our kids here at Mary’s Mount laughing and having a good time I also experience that sense of true joy. I love my job as an Assistant Principal, especially when I’m out and about chatting with the kids. Like today visiting the Year 3 students and listening to their list of adjectives to describe a secret object. One of them said, “Round, smooth and shiny” and although it was describing a pebble, reference to my head made us all laugh! Then there was the Year 5 boys at lunch yesterday racing their model cars down the slide. You could sense their happiness and engagement in doing something they love.
I guess I am writing about laughter because we all tend to be so busy these days that moments of happiness just slip by and we do not recognise or appreciate them. The pressures these days on us all, including our children, is very different to the past that when we do have a moment of pure joy we must store it away and call upon it when times are tough. I mean they do say laughter can be better
than a vacation!
Our life these days is measured by success or failure and there are many studies on this that tell us a person with a positive self image is more likely to succeed over a person with a negative self image. Therefore, what tends to matter is not our ability but how we perceive ourselves. I marvel at many of you out there in the way you encourage your children and this is something as parents we need to do to help build that positive self image.
So how do we measure if we are a successful Christian? Jesus tells us there are two things we need to do, love God and love our neighbour. Easy! When we love our neighbour we help them develop a positive self image. If someone encourages us we see ourselves as valuable. Further to this, if we are made in the image of God, that should be enough to treat others with respect, love and kindness.
I know I tend to go on a bit in my section, my boss tells me all the time, but I find it very calming in reflecting on my week and my faith. Who knows, maybe you agree with him or maybe you get something out of it!
Enjoy the break with your beautiful kids and look for those little moments of laughter that show true joy and happiness. These are the things that will be looked back on as they get older.
Have a blessed week.
