CAMPUS CODARICE UNIVERSITY OPERA HOUSE
5
This project was produced in collaboration with classmate Gina Rodriguez.
Coda is a musical term meaning “the passage that marks the end of a piece of music.” The coda draws on the main theme of the piece of music while changing it in such a way that it can bring completion. The buildings along the main axis of Rice provide variations both on the use of brick and on framing outdoor spaces. Our design culminates the axis by allowing the visitor to discover a new world within this familiar language. We’ve subverted the typical brick language with the screen surrounding our proj-ect, and framed a public space within that takes on new qualities when shaded by this screen.
The brick screen actually consists of terracotta pieces, which are suspended on cables in an aluminum framework and supported by steel columns. From a distance, this system appears as one monolithic form, which at night begins to reveal the volumes within as they are illuminated and glow through the spaces in the screen.

INTENSE CITYA STUDY IN INVERSION
23
This studio addressed how architecture deals with the past by placing new infrastructure (retail, office and hotel) in Bretscheidplatz, a historic site in Berlin.
My proposal explored and maximized the inversions that occur with urban development over time: with intense density and infill, the familiar becomes the unfamiliar, means the negative becomes the positive, the outside becomes the inside, and the private becomes the public.
I created a three-dimensional grid system which would alter the scale at which humans experience the monumental and take the relationship of future to past to the extreme. By making the vastness of the space between historic structures infiinitely occupiable, we can preserve and experience the historic city as landscape supporting contemporary programming.
This project was a runner-up for the Watkin Award, earning the Rosemary Watkin Barrick traveling fel-lowship.

Enclosed by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Paseo del Prado, CIAR is located in a one of the most culturally significant parts of Madrid.
A series of voids form a transparent lightwell and circulation core, allowing occupants to look through and across, viewing activity throughout the building and spiraling upward through the open spaces of the program. The metal screen of the envelope presents the appearance of one cohesive volume to the outside. The introverted nature of the CIAR encourages occupants to focus on the cultural possibilities that lie within before re-emerging into the outside world.

PACKING PROBLEMSHOUSING IN HOUSTON’S FIFTH WARD

This project was produced in collaboration with classmate Adam Wagner.
Working on an urban scale, we addressed housing issues in the low-income area of Houston’s Fifth Ward, including factors such as density, circulation, and interaction with greenspace.
Our proposal sought to address these challenges on multiple scales and in a range of degrees of ab-straction and specificity. We developed a system that demonstrated flexibility and could be reconfig-ured at any scale. This system uses compositional patterning as a tool for efficient spatial organization without allowing it to override the project.

The following Programming/Concept Design Report illustrates the expansion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah. The existing Missionary Training Center (MTC) was constructed in 1974 and can accommodate a maximum of 3,500 missionaries. With the recent announcement that missionaries could now apply for their mission trip one year earlier, it is expected that the number of applications will increase over time with an expected maximum capacity of 6,000 missionaries.
The goal of this study was to identify how the existing Missionary Training Center could be expanded in phases to accommodate the increase in missionaries. The first phase would be to a capacity of 4,500 missionaries to be completed by June of 2017. The second phase is to a capacity of 6,000 missionaries with completion to be determined as needs dictate. All aspects of the existing campus were analyzed and programmed to identify the requirements and sizes of the various departments and systems that would be needed or enlarged in order to serve the needs of the missionaries in each of the two phases. A detailed program of these space requirements is included in this report.
In addition to providing the space needs of each department, the overall campus was analyzed to improve deficiencies that have been observed over the years, new teaching methods

were analyzed and anticipated in the expansion and more flexible residence room designs were incorporated. Several sites from satellite campuses in Provo to expanding east or south of the existing campus were explored during this study. The master plan committee recommended approach for the campus expansion was directly to the southeast of the existing campus so a single cohesive campus could remain in place and is the basis of this report. The BYU Laundry and Maintenance Buildings currently occupy the site of where the expansion will occur. These buildings will be relocated across 1700 North and allow the MTC to expand in their current location.
The goal for each of the campus phases (4,500 and 6,000) was to create a ‘unified and compressive’ campus plan at their completion and not a campus that relied on future changes to complete the plan. A new campus entry, better connection to the Temple, more open space between buildings, parking and vehicle service needs were incorporated. Phasing plans of all the different steps needed to complete each phase, building concept plans and supporting information developed during the study are included in this report.

Over the past year, ZGF has met with all of the various departments and groups that make up the Mission-ary Training Center. Functional requirements, room numbers and sizes, and adjacencies have all been compiled by department and then distributed into the building by building program published here. Current space requirements were recorded as well as projected increases to accommodate both the 4,500 Mission-ary capacity and the ultimate 6,000 capacity.
