Dear MSW families and friends, “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.” In these words, God reminds us that while we experience pain and suffering in this world, there will be an end. Difficult times will be a distant memory and the glory of heaven awaits us. Pope Benedict XVI said, “The one who has hope lives differently; the one who hopes has been granted the gift of a new life." How can we live differently?

1. The pain and suffering in this world is overwhelming at times. Focusing on it, we can easily become overwhelmed. I know a priest who, every time someone asked him, “How are you?”, he would respond, “Blessed!” This response would catch them off guard and would change the course of their conversation for the better.

2. Cardinal George said that when you’re sick or suffering, the world shrinks to the size of your own body. This meant that it’s harder for you to notice others’ pains or to be kind because you are suffering so much. Your worldview has collapsed into how you are feeling. Mindful of this reality, it caused him to be more intentional about being attentive to others while he was dying.

Let us try this week to live with hope and to seek to live differently than the rest of the world. Jesus is actively present not just in heaven but in this world, continually offering us the hope of “new life” in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Derek

GOD’S WORDS Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment

our clock radios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when

the television is turned off or someone bids us “good-night,” our life is filled

with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to

buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our

attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the

same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day?

The challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of

Christ Jesus.

Pondering Priesthood

A Seminarian’s Thoughts The Latin word for seminary is seminarium which translates to seed bed. Those who have a calling to the priesthood go to the seminary to nourish that seed, that vocation, to allow it to grow and blossom into priestly ministry. A vocation is a call from God to be who He created you to be, and that seed is planted in your soul at conception. We all have the universal vocation to be saints, the desire to be holy, and to know and love God. But we also have a particular vocation—whether to be ordained, enter religious life, enter the marriage covenant, or embrace the single life. Added to this particular vocation could be an occupational vocation. All of these vocations begin with a seed being planted in your heart and either allowing that seed to be nourished and grow, or be crushed and dry out. In order for a seed to grow, it needs nutrients, water, and sunlight. In order for a vocational call to grow, it needs prayer, silence, and encouragement. This weekend’s readings all deal with seeds, harvesting, and the toil of labor in creation. No vocation naturally comes to fulfillment on its own. Just like seeds in the field, a vocation needs to be tended diligently and properly or it may die. If you do not attend to the vocation you feel in your heart, it will not grow. A vocation of any kind takes time to grow and develop. The plants in our gardens grow in silence, and so does a vocation. They do not flourish overnight. We need to be aware of our vocation in order to nourish it properly. The vocation to holiness is nourished by prayer, silence, acts of charity, dying to self, and allowing God to work. Though the vocation to holiness never dies, it can be choked and trampled upon by bad decisions, a lack of faith and trust in God, and a refusal to allow God to work in and through us, and through our participation in the sacraments. May we be aware of our universal call to holiness, make frequent visits to the sacraments for strength and nourishment, take time each day to pray and sit in God’s presence, and find ways to nourish our spiritual life through reading Scripture and seeing God in all things. It is only in nourishing and tending to our universal vocation to holiness that we are made aware of our particular vocation. Over the past eleven years, I have tended to my personal vocation of priesthood through prayer, study, internships, chaplaincy work, and walking the journey of faith with many people beginning with the high school Quigley Scholars Program, to undergrad at St. Joseph College Seminary at Loyola and now at Mundelein Seminary. I am excited to announce that I will be ordained to the Transitional Diaconate by Cardinal Cupich on Wednesday, August 12 at Mundelein Seminary with my Chicago classmates. My original ordination date was May 9, 2020, but with the pandemic, it has been postponed until a number of people can gather to give glory and praise to God for His vocational call to my classmates and me. Please continue to pray for us as we approach our diaconate ordination day!

In Christ the sower, Seminarian Andy Matijevic

Do You Require a Low Gluten Host ? Mary, Seat of Wisdom keeps a supply of low gluten hosts in the Sacristy for those who are gluten intolerant. If possible, please note your need in the comments section when you register for Mass. Please notify the usher or sacristan as soon as you arrive at church and be seated in a pew served by the Priest Celebrant (on “Joseph’s side” of the church). Alert the priest when you approach for Communion. If you have any questions, please see an usher before Mass begins.

Faith Formation for Children and Families at MSW Parish Register Now to Secure Your Spot

In-person classes scheduled to start the week of September 13th

with back-up plans for digital and “at home” formation, if necessary.

Three options available to meet the needs of your family: .

† Growing in Faith Together (GIFT) - Tuesdays, 4:30 p.m. (PreK4-6th Grade) or 6:15 p.m. (PreK4-8th Grade) GIFT is a new faith formation program, previously known as the School of Religion, that provides a family-centered and intergenerational approach with parents attending the weekly sessions once per month for a special whole-family event. The curriculum incorporates scripture study, faith activities, prayer services and liturgical season highlights. Living in Faith Together (LIFT) will be a new approach to 7th and 8th Grade Confirmation preparation that involves a more social, service, study and spiritual-oriented formation. Classes meet in the MSW School.

† Family Faith Weaving (FFW) - Select Sundays, 10:45 a.m., (PreK3-8th Grade with Family) Everyone in the family, including parents, comes together one time per month in Wisdom Hall with other families to explore a thematic topic at both the children’s level (in catechist-led breakout sessions) and at the adult level (via guest speakers). Children use grade-level-appropriate materials during the month at home, supported by parents and additional online resources.

† Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) - Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday (PreK3 –8th Grade) CGS is a unique program based upon Montessori principles of education that incorporates a multi-age, child-led approach within a special environment called the Atrium in the Clark Ministry Center. Materials are linked to biblical and liturgical sources. Children generally begin in Level I as early as PK3 through 1st Grade and progress through subsequent levels through 8th Grade .

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already

there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Rose for Life A MSW Respect Life Ministry Activity This week’s Rose for Life at Mary’s shrine is donated by the Bernardo Family in thanksgiving for blessings received. This week’s Rose for Life at St. Joseph’s shrine is donated by Sandy Bosy in loving memory of her father, Richard Peska. To honor Mary, our parish patroness and St. Joseph, Protector of the Holy Family, single long-stemmed roses will be placed at both shrines each week before the weekend liturgies. The roses symbolize the Church’s respect for life at all stages and the hope that abortion will soon be a thing of the past. Each week, two roses are dedicated to loved ones by families or members of our parish. If you wish to donate a rose, please call Becky Roller at 847-825-1353. A donation of $5 is requested per rose.

Please do not remove vases from the altar.
