The Life of Mary

• Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, believed to be elderly, were the parents of Mary

• Mary was betrothed to Saint Joseph. She was probably around the age of 15 at the time

• After her betrothal Mary was visited in her hometown by an angel called Gabriel. Gabriel told her she would have a baby called Jesus

• Three months after the Annunciation Mary went to see her cousin Elizabeth

THE ANNUNCIATION

God sent an angel, Gabriel to Nazareth where Mary and Joseph lived. The angel went in and said to Mary ‘Rejoice, so highly favored! God is with you.’ Mary was rather disturbed at those words and asked herself what this sudden greeting meant. But God’s angel said ‘Mary, you should not be afraid. You have won God's favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a Son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord will give him the throne of his ancestor David. He will rule over the House of Jacob forever and his reign will have no end.’

THE ANNUNCIATION

Mary said ‘how can this be? I am a virgin’ ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of most high will cover you with it’s shadow’ Gabriel replied. ‘And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her elderly age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God.’ ‘I am the handmaid of God, let what you have said be done to me’ said Mary. The angel left.

JESUS IS BORN Mary travelled to Bethlehem

with Joseph to pay their taxes. While they were there Mary had Jesus. Mary and Joseph tried to find an inn or a hotel to stay in but the place was so crowded they had to stay in a barn. Mary put Jesus in a manger. An angel told some nearby shepherds about Jesus and said to follow a star in the sky to find him.

and blessed is the fruitof thy womb, Jesus.
