Thoughts from your President We recently celebrated the first day of Summer. Hopefully, the weather will now begin to cooperate and give us good days to bring out our cars, have some fun, and enjoy each others company. Earlier this year we were proud to award scholarships to Dale Roth of the Warren County Technical school and Christian Altmann of CIT. Both of these young men attended one of our monthly meetings and talked about their plans to earn degrees in Automotive Technology. We wish them all the best for the future. On our Spring tour we visited the America on Wheels Museum in Allentown (Continued next page)

and Lucky Lucock’s extensive model train exhibit in Steel City. Subsequent to the tour we had a great picnic at Ed & Alice Dietrich’s home in Glendon. A big Thank You to all who participated and joined the fun. Special thanks to Bob Frey, Rick Wagner, and Ed and Alice Dietrich. The Manor Care cruise on Saturday 6/21/14 was excellent. I was gratified to hear that 23 cars participated and were enjoyed by the residents. I understand they asked if we could return in the Fall. Thanks to all who participated.

Easton Heritage day is Sunday 7/13/14. It’s always great to see the cars, enjoy the people, and take in the entertainment and fireworks. Information on this event can be found on the web at heritageday.org

Our 38th annual show at Springtown is scheduled for Sunday 9/14/14. Hopefully, we will have a good turnout since the Strausstown Lions Club show is scheduled for Sunday 9/7/14 this year. The pocket knife gifts and the oval dash plaques have been ordered. We still need 12 more trophy sponsors. See me if you, or someone you know, would like to sponsor a trophy.

In July / August our cruises at Dairy Queen are Saturday 7/12/14 and Saturday 8/9/14. Salvatore’s is scheduled for Saturday 7/26/14 and Saturday 8/30/14. Both cruises will go from 5:00PM to 9:00PM.

I urge everyone to work together to support our many activities. Don’t hesitate to volunteer to work on one of our various committees. Also, encourage friends and acquaintances to join us. Working together, we can and will succeed!

BEHIND THE MOTOMETER©

All you folks who missed our Spring Tour missed a lot of excitement. As tour leader I was

happy when all ten cars of our caravan arrived safely at the National Museum of

Industrial History. My euphoria quickly turned to grief when it was discovered the

museum was not open. I had failed to confirm what I scheduled earlier. What to do?

Twenty people standing around with a couple of hours to kill. John Mitzak and Frank Becker tried

to contact the museum with their cell phones to no avail. I started to panic and then a serendipitous

event. 1

Rich Wagner was standing around with the rest of us wondering what to do when his cell phone

rang. It was a staff member at America on Wheels Museum calling about his ‘64 Mercury

Convertible which was on display there. With brilliant presence of mind he asked if they might

open their museum early for us. “Bingo”. Yes it was already open since there was an event under

way there as they spoke.

Our group traveled the dozen or so blocks to the America on Wheels Museum and found a

Volkswagen show in progress. Perhaps one hundred Volkswagens of all types and vintages. Even a

yellow chopped and channeled Volkswagen pickup.

Somebody flashed their AACA Membership cards and the museum staff left us all in free of charge

and the exhibits upstairs showcased some interesting vehicles from the 1950 and 1960 era. We spent

an enjoyable hour and a half before we had to leave.

We wandered around Bethlehem, finally got on Rte. 412 East and I (the tour leader) missed the

turn to Ron Lucock’s. Rich Wagner to the rescue again and got us straightened out in Saucon Park

and on the right road. “Lucky” Lucock was waiting for us (with Pizza no less) and had his O gauge

train exhibit open for us. This is a most incredible display of the Lehigh Valley as it was in the 1950

era. Scratch built models of hundreds of houses (most still exist) in the exact scale and in proper

location to each other are laid out on miniature streets with scale model cars and tiny people. It is

hard to believe that one man could have created this. He is an extremely creative and gifted

gentleman and we thanked him profusely for hosting our group.

We left, travelling east along the Lehigh River and paralleling the Norfolk and Southern Rail Road

tracks and were soon at Alice and Ed Dietrich’s where they had everything all set up and ready for

us. Some other wayward members joined us and we enjoyed a great picnic. The pulled pork,

seafood salad and tables full of goodies made for a good ending of a great day, thanks to Rick

Wagner, Lucky Lucock and the Dietrich’s.
