Thoughts from your President

Okay, enough with all the rain and the cloudy overcast stuff. I’m ready for a little more of that really nice car cruise night weather. So far we have only had one cruise at Salvatore’s, which turned out pretty good with 60+ cars in attendance. Dairy Queen to date has been a wash out, so I don’t really have a whole lot to talk about, so on Saturday I went out looking for some inspiration at Dodda’s auction house where they were auctioning off some cars and other things. Several club members were there and I received some good advice on what to look for when I’m ready to purchase my first collectors car, or I should say the first collectors car I plan on keeping for awhile, and some age old advice that echoed the advice my father always used to tell me, “save your money”. That advice still rings true today. (continued next page)

The selection of auction cars was great in that there was a car for every taste. There were some serious project cars, some that needed a little love, some decent drivers, some that were bought for some very reasonable yet below value that the buyers had no plans on keeping but planned on flipping for a higher price. There were some newer models like a very clean 84 Z/28 that are at the bottom of the price scale and are beginning to climb in value. All in all it was a very interesting and informative day if you have an interest in this fascinating hobby. I think I will be attending more auctions of this nature in the future. Oh, and what was my favorite car that I would have loved to take home? That would have been the gorgeous 1941 Willys pickup truck followed by the Overland Express, or Dale and Gildas Blackbird, and the 84 Z/28. Don’t forget the Meuser Park show on June 5, 2016 sponsored by Surf City Garage and I hope to see you all up at Sal’s. Alan

My 1926 Franklin and the Gatsby House

I attended “Cocktails & Cupcakes” event on March 19, 2016 at Silver Creek Country Club. Angel 34 Foundation-finding a cure for childhood cancer, was the benefactor for the evening. The event was sponsored 100% by well-known vendors in the Lehigh Valley, one being Carol Fenstermacher Custom Designs, wife of Alan Fenstermacher Club President. The theme of the event was the Great Gatsby era. I was invited by the foundation to bring out my 1926 Franklin Touring Car. This really set the theme as everyone was dressed from the 1920’s along with the music, food and auctions. John Wirick Photography donated his time for the event, taking beautiful pictures of guests and the Franklin as they arrived. (Ironically I had had my 1925 at the Gatsby House in 1995). It was an interesting event, unfortunately, I almost froze to death coming home to Phillipsburg.

Our Annual Car Show is fast approaching (June 5) and we are in desperate need of donations for our Tricky Tray (both merchandise and Gift Cards) The Club is attempting to “grow this show” and unless we get the support needed for our various activities, this will not happen. If we are to continue raising funds for “Dream Come True” and provide entertainment for those who enjoy participating in our Tricky Trays. Your help is urgently needed It is virtually impossible for one individual to solicit gift cards and purchase the items needed with so little time. Please help us – other car clubs are able to support their charities in big ways.

With your help we can make this the premier car event in the Lehigh Valley.

BEHIND THE MOTOMETER©

MY DAD

He was a good man. Far better than I, and I figured this out at an early age. He was religious and sang in the Church Choir for 70 years with a clear strong baritone voice. He was a good

mechanic, a patient man and I never once heard him swear. He was a farmer and farmers have a lot to cuss about. But he never once did. He did mutter sometimes under his breath and with me around he had a reason to do so. He and I worked together almost daily for forty years (with and for each other). I miss him and his advice although at times I must admit I did not relish or welcome his advice. Looking back on it now I guess he was usually right and I’d like to share this story about what and all right guy he was. Harry...

Things were scarce on the home front during World War II. On the farm we had plenty of food and could get gasoline for the tractor but my father never put a drop of it in the car. He had an ‘A’ ration stamp for the car and bought his allotment at the local gas station. About the only place we went was to old Greenwich church. The car tires were poor and he ‘made do’ with second hand recaps and blow out patches.

The Lang and bolster broke on dad’s hay wagon so he went to the ration board and got approval to buy a whole new farm wagon running gear. He ordered it from the Sears Roebuck catalog and when it came by Railway Express it had four brand new B. F. Goodrich passenger car tires mounted on the wheels. Nobody had seen new car tires for over three years, but my father put them on his hay wagon and there they stayed. Our neighbor Ken’s 1937 Chevy needed tires also. When he heard about my father’s wagon tires, he got ration board approval and immediately ordered a Sears wagon. But his came with ribbed 6.00 x 16 front tractor tires (see picture) which he promptly put on his car and went to Ocean City. My dad thought it was totally improper to do such a thing and I thought my dad was kind of stupid to leave new tires on a hay wagon. But now I know my father was a man Diogenes was looking for and I’m proud to be his son. If your dad is still around be sure to give him a hug this Father’s Day. June 2007 By Bob Frey

HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL THE DAD’S
