SPEAKING OUT IN LOVE

In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken in the presence of Jesus Christ. Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The LORD tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he does not speak out to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held responsible. We live in a “do your own thing” age where moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is rooted in love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As Saint Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10).

HABLAR CON AMOR En los versículos finales del Evangelio de hoy Jesús dice que cuando dos o tres se reúnen en su nombre, “yo estoy ahí en medio de ellos”. Por eso entendemos que las correcciones fraternales siempre se hacen con Jesús presente ante noso-tros. De la misma manera, animar el bien en otros no es sólo lo correcto, sino que es una necesidad. El Señor le dice al profeta Ezequiel que “si no habla” para que la persona se aparte de su mala vida, él también tendrá que rendir cuenta. Vivimos en una época en que “hacemos lo que queremos” donde la moralidad objetiva se ignora. Claramente cuando el mensaje que compartimos con otros se hace por amor, nuestros motivos no pueden mal interpretarse. Como san Pablo ya lo dice: “Con el amor, no se hace ningún mal al prójimo. Por eso en el amor cabe toda la Ley” (Romanos 13:10).

Living God’s Word We might hope for a change of heart from someone we love or a member of our community. But first we must change our own hearts by forgiving and accepting the other in true love. True love begins with recognizing our own “faults” and softening our hearts toward the ones we love.

Did You Know?

It is recommended to make sure your children’s school is a safe place. Every teacher, coach, and volunteer who works with children in the Archdiocese’s parishes and schools must have a background check before he or she is permitted to work in any school or parish related job or activity that involves contact with children. But what about the children who attend non-Catholic private or public schools? Talk with school administrators and find out what steps they take to protect children from harm. Suggest that they review other abuse prevention programs to ensure that their policies and practices are up to date. And demand that all employees and volunteers who work in the school be properly screened, including background checks, before they are allowed to be near your children.

TESOROS DE NUESTRA FE Muchos católicos afroamericanos son miembros de los Caballeros de San Pedro Claver, organización fundada para ellos en 1909, cuando el racismo no les permitía participar en organizaciones euro estadounidenses. Esta organización toma su nombre de un jesuita español del siglo XVII, Pedro, quien llegó a Cartagena (Colombia) en 1610 y se escandalizó ante la trata de esclavos en el continente americano. A pesar de censuras papales en contra de la esclavitud esta pecaminosa cos-tumbre seguía robando humanidad a los africanos. Pedro se consagró al servicio de ellos, recibiéndolos con caridad, co-mida y alivio apenas llegaban en los barcos. Pedro no pudo liberar a los esclavos pero si se dedicó a servirlos y conver-tirlos. Él preparaba catequistas de entre los mismos africanos para que pudieran cristianizar a los recién llegados. Pedro Claver sufrió muchos insultos y calumnias por reunir a los africanos en iglesias y en especial, por darles los sacramentos cristianos. Sus propios superiores, dejándose llevar por las críticas de los criollos, lo castigaban por el trabajo que hacía con los esclavos. Por tal razón se autonombró como “Pedro Claver, de los negros, esclavo para siempre”.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We know for certain that the sacrament of penance was a fairly rare event in the life of a Christian in the early centuries, but that everyone had a duty to admit their sins and ask forgiveness before giving thanks in the Sunday Eucharist and receiving Christ’s Body and Blood at the table. Everyone today is familiar with this same ancient pattern. We also know about Lent and its journey of renewal, and even those who are returning from summer vacations may speak of a fresh perspective on life and a resolve to do better. Saint Augustine spoke of a third kind of penance, beyond the turning of the catechumens to a different life, beyond the normal everyday fresh starts, to a form that is severe and serious. Certain sins broke faith with the community: the sinners were obliged to give their names to the bishop and were barred from partici-pation in the Eucharist. Augustine mentioned sacrilege, adultery, and murder as the culprits, great wounds for the perpe-trator, wounds that were serious, deadly, mortal. Penance was such a frightening prospect that many people delayed their baptism for fear that they would sin, a practice with which Augustine was well acquainted. Pastoral need would eventual-ly call the church to reconsider its practice.

Reflecting on God’s Word During the first few months of marriage, the honey-moon period, the one we love may seem perfect to us. He or she can do nothing wrong. Soon, though, reali-ty sets in and we start accumulating hurts. We may hurt one another knowingly or unknowingly. It’s much the same in a family or a community. Sooner or later our love for one another is tested by sin and hu-man weakness. Will we put up with the other’s be-havior or confront it? Which choice reflects true love? Today Paul recalls some signs of true love; he re-minds us what those who love will not do. The other Scriptures bring out some of the surprising signs of true love. Loving one another just might involve nag-ging, confronting, fighting, or telling family secrets. It will certainly involve mutual respect and acceptance, along with a healthy dose of prayer for each other. And true love will seek constantly to call forth the best in the ones we love.

Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios Durante los primeros meses de casados, el período de la luna de miel, nuestro cónyuge puede parecernos perfecto. Él o ella no puede hacer nada que esté mal. Pronto, sin em-bargo, llega la realidad y empezamos a acumular heridas. Podemos herirnos mutuamente a propósito o sin proponér-noslo. Es básicamente lo que sucede en una familia o en una comunidad. Tarde o temprano nuestro amor de los unos por los otros se pone a prueba por el pecado y la debi-lidad humana. ¿Soportaremos el comportamiento de otras personas o las confrontaremos? ¿Cuál de las dos opciones refleja el verdadero amor? Hoy Pablo nos recuerda algunos signos del amor verdadero al advertirnos lo que no harán aquellos que aman. Las otras Escrituras hacen notar algu-nos signos sorprendentes del amor verdadero. En el amor de los unos a los otros pudieran estar presentes el atosigar, confrontar, pelear o contar secretos familiares. Ciertamente estará presente el respeto y la aceptación mutua junto a una dosis saludable de oración de los unos por los otros. Y el amor verdadero tratará constantemente de buscar lo mejor en las personas que amamos.
