Worship Aid for May 31, 2020 The celebration of Pentecost Sunday Today’s readings: Acts 2: 1-11 1 Corinthians 12: 3b-7, 12-13 Gospel of John 20: 19-23 Gathering Song: One Spirit, One Church Refrain: We are a pilgrim people, we are the Church of God. A family of believers, disciples of the Lord. United in one spirit, ignited by the fire. Still burning through the ages, still present in our lives. V. 1 Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest, And in our hearts take up thy rest; Come with my grace and heav’nly aid To fill the hearts which thou hast made. V. 2 O Comforter, to thee we cry, Thou gift of God sent from on high. Thou font of life and fire of love, the soul’s anointing from above. Glory to God in the highest…. Responsorial Psalm

Profession of Faith I believe in God, the father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only be-gotten Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Fa-ther almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life ever-lasting. Amen.

Preparation of gifts: Send Us Your Spirit Refrain: Come Lord Jesus, send us your spirit, Renew the face of the earth (repeat) V.1 Come to us, Spirit of God, Breathe in us now, We sing together. Spirit of hope and of light, fill our lives Come to us, Spirit of God. V.2 Fill us with the fire of your love; Burn in us now, Bring us together. Come to us dwell in us, Change our loves, oh Lord Come to us, Spirit of God.

Communion Song: O Breathe On Me, O Breath of God V.1 O breathe on me, O Breath of God, Fill me with life anew, That I may love the things you do, And do what you would do. V.2 O breathe on me, O Breath of God, Until my heart is pure; Until my will is one with yours, To do and to endure. V.3 O breathe on me, O Breath of God, My will to yours incline, Until this selfish part of me Glows with your fire divine. V.4 O Breathe on me, O breath of God, So, I shall never die, But live with you the perfect life For all eternity.

STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Corinthi-ans, “There are different gifts, but the same Spirit; there are different ministries, but the same Lord.” How am I using my gifts for the common good?

Homily for Pentecost Sunday

Readings: Acts 2:1-11; 1 Cor 12:3-7, 12-13; John 20:19-23

I will send you the Advocate, the Holy Spirit; He will teach you all things

After the Resurrection up to the Ascension, the Apostles were obviously happy on seeing Jesus again; but they were queried for gazing into heaven in sadness after Jesus ascended to heaven (Acts 1:11). The Apostles’ state of melancholy will continue for some time; for they locked themselves up in the room for the next ten days until Pentecost, when the Spirit came.

However, the Pentecost event brings to perspective the promises of Christ. The swiftness with which the promise was fulfilled goes to show the faithfulness of God and his abiding presence. In a unique way, the Church is born at Pentecost. The promise of Jesus in John 14:16, “I will send you the Advocate,” is fulfilled. The gifts of the Holy Spirit overwhelmingly envelop the church; the disciples individually are empowered to proclaim the Gospel; and thousands are converted and baptized. It is this courage that leads the apostles and future disciples to carry the gospel of Christ to the ends of the earth; because this advocate from the “father will teach you all things,” (John 14:26). Yes, the Church was born, the disciples of Jesus were happy.

My dear friends, one essential thing that we do forget is the unifying effect of Pentecost. The first reading gives an account of how people of different languages were able to hear the message in their native tongue. The Spirit comes to break barriers between races, peoples, languages, and kingdoms. It is therefore true that any Christian who basis his or her relationships with others on race or any other mundane things is directly in antithesis with the Holy Spirit. In other words, the Spirit is yet to have a hold in or an effect on him or her. It reminds us what Jesus said that those who worship God will do so in spirit and in truth, and not in any localized place (John 4:24). The Holy Spirit is equally transforming and has the effect of cleansing us of our sins and making us better and holier persons, as we experience in the confession-al.

Yes, just as the disciples who witnessed Jesus and all the mighty things he did were downcast, and afraid before the advent of the Ho-ly spirit, it is understandable if we feel downcast, when we face the challenges of life: the effects of this pandemic; drug addiction of our loved ones, lack of job, loneliness, being abandoned by friends and even children, failing health; and even the uncertainty with and within the Church. But, always remember these words of Jesus: I will not leave you as orphans; I will be with you even to the end of time (Matt 28:20); Jesus says, I will be with you in your challenges, in your low and high moments. The reason why we should be particularly confident is that Jesus Christ has all the power and authority such that all things, no matter how powerful or destructive they may seem, are subjected to him.

My dear brothers and sisters, to further his presence and influence in our lives, Jesus gives his Church, and us the Holy Spirit, who is the author of many gifts. Through the power and working of His Spirit, our sins are forgiven, through his power bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. In the Holy Spirit, we have the gifts of wisdom, counsel, knowledge, understanding, piety, fear of God, and courage. The Holy Spirit is given to us in and through the sacraments. Let us not allow the Spirit with His gifts to be dormant in our lives. Let us reconnect with the Spirit within us and seek its guidance in all that we do. The Holy Spirit has the capacity to turn things around for the better. St. Paul says all things work together unto God for those who love Him (Rom 8:28). Things may be difficult today, things may seem uncertain as our country and world is faced with this pandemic, my marriage may seem unfulfilling, my health may be in jeopardy or failing, my Christian life may seem unrewarding and uncertain; but in all these, let us not give up, let us bend on our knees and seek God’s transform-ing spirit. This spirit that transforms, energizes, counsels, empowers, and directs.

Holy Spirit Fall afresh on me! Holy Spirit fall afresh on me! Holy Spirit fall afresh on me!
