A Message from the Headteacher – Mr Michael Gaskill

Welcome to Marus Bridge Primary School.

It iss great to have you with us. We love teaching and we can’t wait to inspire your child to learn.

We want all our pupils to graduate from our school with a whole range of skills and accomplishments, from drama to sport to music and even

design and invention!

Our curriculum is broad, rich and exciting. We cover all National Curriculum subjects and more. Our Bridge Builders scheme helps

every child become a great citizen while also learning about the world around them near and far.

Our success with mathematics and English has put us in the top 10% of schools in the country. That is down to wonderful pupils, supportive

parents and dedicated teachers and TAs.

Our pastoral care is vital too. We see every child as unique and precious. You can count on us to take great care of your children and

support them so that they are successful and happy.

See you in school!

“Pupils make a good start to their education in the highly creative Early Years Foundation Stage.”

“Progress is at least good through Key Stage 1 and accelerates in Key Stage 2 so that by the end of Year 6 it is outstanding overall.”

“The proportion of pupils reaching the higher levels in reading and mathematics in Key Stages 1 and 2 is particularly high but it is not quite so high in writing.”

“Teachers and support staff have high expectations and are extremely well focused on promoting successful learning.”

“Leaders, managers and governors provide outstanding leadership and management.”

“Overall achievement is outstanding because of the high proportion of pupils making and exceeding the expected progress compared to national averages in reading, writing and

mathematics by the time pupils leave the school.”

“Pupils eligible for the pupil premium, disabled pupils and those with special educational needs achieve exceptionally well due to the extremely well targeted programmes and

wide range of skilled and successful interventions which meet their needs.”

“Among the strengths of teaching are high expectations, good subject knowledge and the effective use of assessment, including pupils’ self-assessment. Teachers also use

teaching assistants very well to support those pupils with particular needs and build extremely positive relationships with pupils.”

“The teaching of reading and mathematics is very effective in ensuring that pupils read and calculate confidently and make outstanding progress by the end of Year 6.”

“The school is exceptionally well led by the Headteacher, ably assisted by the Deputy Headteacher. His vision, drive and relentless focus on improving achievement has

galvanised the whole school community together with the senior leadership team and governors. This has led to rapid improvement since the last inspection.”

“Staff know exactly what is expected of them and what the school is striving to achieve. They feel valued, supported and very much part of a team that shares the same vision for

Our Curriculum

At Marus Bridge we have a team of talents: amazing children and amazing teachers and teaching assistants. We believe our curriculum is amongst the best because it’s designed with our pupils and for our pupils.

We ask the children what works for them and what they enjoy. We listen to what they say and then we plan great learning experiences for them.

So how does it work in practice? At the core we have reading and writing and mathematics.

We also use our teachers’ strengths and our excellent links to Hawkley Hall High School to deliver first class teaching of all subjects. We put a strong emphasis on real life skills including designing and making things, outdoor skills, using simple tools, health and fitness and

cookery.

Each term the teachers sit down to plan. They begin with a

set of carefully chosen learning goals from a range of academic subjects. Then they draw up a recipe for the term

including the following ingredients:

Our curriculum offer provides a rich and varied learning ‘diet’ based on the academic, the technical and the practical:

Academic - because we value children’s achievements in real subjects like science, history, geography and the arts.

Technical - because we will give your children every opportunity and encouragement to develop those key skills for success in life - English, Mathematics, I.T. and learning how to learn effectively.

• Lessons and experiences to inspire the children and get them excited about their learning.

• At least one trip or visit to make our learning programme more exciting and real.

• At least one opportunity per term for parents and carers to come into school and get involved in what we’re doing.

• Opportunities for the children to succeed in science, history, geography, technology and the arts.

Page 6: Marus bridge primary schoolmarusbridge.co.uk/.../2018/08/Brochure-2017-2018.docx · Web viewMarus bridge primary school Vibrant, caring and highly valued by parents and the community

Practical - because our learning will be rooted in real life, developing the body as well as the mind, from real life mathematics to sports, cooking and simple building projects.

1. SCHOOL CLASSIFICATION

2. ADMISSION ARRANGEMENTS

ADMISSION ARRANGEMENTS

Our school caters for children aged 4 to 11 years of age. The number of children on roll in September 2017 is 374 pupils.

Our admission number is set at 60 children.Once the Admissions Office has confirmed that your child has a place at Marus Bridge

Parents are invited to visit school either at an informal open morning in January prior to their child starting and/or individually with the Headteacher.Places are allocated by the Local Authority through general arrangements for admissions to primary schools as set out in their information leaflet.

New Infant Reception children are admitted to school after the summer holidays i.e. at the commencement of the school year in which they attain the age of 5 years. Before admission, an evening meeting is arranged for parents of these children to come into school to look round, meet the

Headteacher and other staff and to have the schools’ organisation explained to them. “Taster sessions” and a lunchtime visit are also arranged for the parents and their children to come into school to meet the infant staff and to see the school at work in the summer term, prior to admission in

September. All children are admitted on a part-time basis for the first week and full-time from the second week of term.

The school also provides parents with a further booklet about “Preparation for School” which includes ideas for activities to do with their children before starting school.

School also works in partnership with Wigan and Leigh College to provide sessions in school where parents can find out more about the curriculum and how they can help their children at home.

3. CURRICULUM - MBPS provides a broad, rich and exciting curriculum.

4. THE ORGANISATION OF LEARNING

FROM STRONG FOUNDATIONSChildren in the Reception class follow the EYFS framework (Early Years Foundation Stage). It is a legal requirement and is designed to suit the way young children learn. There are 7 areas of learning and development which guide our Reception teachers’ engagement with your child’s play and activities as they learn. The 7 areas of learning are as follows:Three prime areas which children should mostly develop first are; • Communication and Language• Physical Development• Personal Social and Emotional Development. As children grow the prime areas help them to develop skills in the 4 specific areas which are; • Literacy• Mathematics• Understanding the World• Expressive Arts and Design. These 7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning and each child is treated as an individual with their own unique needs. They learn by playing and exploring, being active and having access to the Curriculum both indoors and outdoors.

We are a two form entry school, starting with two Reception/Foundation Stage classes.

We still have some mixed age classes in Key stage two.

We always organise teaching to suit the needs of our pupils. This will usually mean whole class teaching, learning in pairs and groups and occasionally one to one tuition.

We use subject specialists wherever we can so that your children get the best quality teaching. Our Professional Sports colleagues have sports degrees for example and we have specialist music tuition too.

In years 5 and 6 we have a timetable which makes use of our teachers’ expertise and prepares children for the next major step in their life – the transition to high school.

5. ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHILDREN WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS

6. CHILD PROTECTION 7. RELIGIOUS, MORAL AND CULTURAL

On occasion there are children who have significant differences in learning, behaviour

and physical abilities.

Identification of these additional needs is important so that appropriate arrangements

can be made to meet such needs. Often provision can be provided within the

resources of the school, but other support services provided by the Local Authority or

other agencies may be required. Parents will be involved in this process and informed

about progress.

Over recent years, the school has made great efforts in securing suitable access for

disabled people, including a purpose built disabled toilet/medical room and powered

wheelchair lifts to access both sides of school.

Our school positively welcomes applications from

Parents, whose children have physical disabilities, to join our school community.

We also recognise that some children are able, gifted or talented in many other ways, including extracurricular interests. Wherever possible, we aim to try to support, foster and

encourage these children’s abilities.

The first and most important job of a school is to keep our children safe. We have clear and

strongChild Protection and Safety policies in place.

There may be occasions when we have to consult other agencies even before we

contact you. These procedures have been laid down by

theChildren and Young People Services. If you

wantto know more about this procedure or want to

know any more about how we work with other

agencies please speak to the Headteacher orMr R. Aldridge - Deputy Headteacher/Mrs J.

Lloyd Safeguarding Lead

We do encourage parents to come into school to

help and before you start any work with children

you will be asked to agree to have a CRB(Criminal Records Bureau) check carried out.

Thiswill be explained to you by our

Office Manager, who will explain what documents you need to bring. You will not be

able to volunteer in school with our clearance. Once you

start work you should be given a copy of the child

protection policy, shown where our safeguarding children board is and will be advised about what to do if you have any

concerns about a child’s safety or well-being in school.

The school has no religious denominational affiliation. We hold

religious assemblies, generally based on Christian ethics, but parents have the

right to withdraw their child from assembly and lessons in religious

education. Children who are withdrawn will be provided with appropriate tasks. On occasions, local clergy are invited in to lead some of our daily assemblies. At

Marus Bridge we always aim –

To foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere where there is a shared commitment to respect diversity in race and culture.

To create an environment where racism is challenged and prevented.

To promote respect for other people’s opinions, property, beliefs and views.

To develop tolerance, honesty, good manners, consideration and sensitivity.

To develop an understanding of a code of acceptable behaviour both in and out of school.

11. REPORTING PROGRESS

12. FOMBA

The teachers act “in loco parentis” whilst the children are in their care, i.e. in the

place of the parent. Class teachers are often very busy

immediately before the start of the School session to discuss matters with Parents and after School is often more convenient, but

preferably by appointment for more lengthy discussions.

The Headteacher can be consulted at most times and again set appointments are often

more beneficial.

The school admission form asks for details of contact addresses and telephone

numbers in order that liaison can be more easily maintained.

Our first priority is your child’s welfare and safety. Therefore there may be occasions when our concern about your child means

that we have to consult other agencies even before we contact you.

The procedures we follow have been laid down by the Children’s Young People

Services. If you want to know more about this procedure, please speak to Deputy

Headteacher- Mr R.Aldridge or Mrs J.Lloyd (Our Safeguarding Lead).

Parents are encouraged to come into School

Our School endeavours to teach children a wide variety of skills and understanding in

a broad range of Physical Educational Activities. We also aim to give

opportunities for children to extendTheir skills and interest by providing

athletics, cricket, football, netball and rugby teams which meet other Schools.

These teams enable our children to meet other

Children and enjoy their sport together.

All our children are encouraged to try their best at the appropriate level and

appreciate the skills of each other. They are taught that participation and

enjoyment are all important and that winning often comes as a bonus.

Sports Days are held for juniors and infants and are a source of fun and healthy competition, enjoyed by both children and

spectators. Each year, all junior children attend Ashton Baths for swimming instruction on a rota

basis.

Our Homework Policy sets out guidance for parents and children It is especially important that parents support children in their homework and ensure that it is completed as requested and Homework

Books signed where required.

At the end of each academic year parents receive a written report regarding children’s progress and this can be discussed with the class teacher.

Parents’ Meetings (Afternoons/Evenings) are arranged in the middle of the autumn

and spring terms.

There will also be a mid-year report in February prior to parents’ evenings.

A Friends’ Association provides an interesting and enjoyable focus for Parents,

Friends and Children, to come together socially. Their aims are to provide extra

facilities for education and develop stronger links between Parents, Staff and other

interested parties. FOMBA also have regular clubs and events

for children in School which are usually held after school in key stages. All events are

advertised, some of which include: Halloween Disco’s, Christmas Parties,

Please Note: All curriculum, subject and school policies are available on request.

BEHAVIOUR REWARDS AND SANCTIONS

Praise and rewards should have great emphasis. Discipline should be consistent, fair, positive and based on mutual

respect and understanding.

The school rules and sanctions are displayed in every classroom and open teaching areas throughout school and are adhered to

consistently.

The vast majority of pupils in school prove themselves to be exemplary role models!

It is important that these pupils are rewarded accordingly.

The school employs a number of sanctions to enforce the school rules, and to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.

A FULL COPY OF THE SCHOOL’S BEHAVIOUR POLICY CAN BE FOUND ON THE SCHOOL WEBSITE.

School uniform should be worn by all children when attending school or on School visits unless there is a special reason, e.g.

‘Non-Uniform Day’ of which you would be advised.Details of this uniform are provided early in the summer term

prior to starting school. It is expected that all children have a change of footwear for

indoor use and P.E. Kit for hygiene and safety reasons.

We would be grateful if young children could wear shoes which they can fasten themselves e.g. Velcro/buckles etc. Shoes with laces can be difficult and we don’t have enough staff to cope with fastening lots of shoes at break times. Laces are good if

children can tie them unaided.

We work in partnership with you. If parents and teachers work together our children can be happy and successful in school.

17. CONSIDERATION OF COMPLAINTS 21. MID DAY MEALS & SNACKS

18. ACCESS TO PUBLIC DOCUMENTS

19. CHARGING POLICY

20. GENERAL :

Any complaint should initially be addressed to the Headteacher. In the event of the problem remaining unresolved, the problem should be put fully into writing and sent to

the Headteacher, who will then pass it on to the Chair of Governors. The matter will then be dealt with in accordance with the procedure laid down by our policy.

Inspection of copies of any documents, which are required to be made available by or under the Education (School Curriculum and Related Information) Regulations 1989, can be arranged by contacting the School Office and many are available in the Entrance Hall

or on the website for viewing. (A charge may be made for copies).

A copy of the School’s Policy on charging for activities (e.g. musical instrument tuition, visits and swimming) is available from the school office. However, in practice, Parents are

requested to make contributions towards certain visits and activities that enhance children’s learning. No children shall be denied these activities, if a Parent is unable to contribute. Many of these activities are already subsidised from the funds raised by the

School throughout the year. If sufficient contributions are not received, then certain visits may not become viable. Some pupils may be eligible for Pupil Premium. Parents will be

notified if your family circumstances allow you to qualify for this.

Do not allow your child to bring toys to School as they can be lost or damaged and as a result children become very upset. Similarly, it is preferable for jewellery

to be left at home. Ear-rings can be very dangerous and are therefore not allowed in School. If Parents agree to children having pierced ears, this should be done during the long summer break when children can get accustomed to studs.

Staff are not responsible for taking studs out and children should not miss P.E./Games/Swimming as a result of having ears pierced. The car park at the front of the School is primarily for the staff and visitors or for deliveries to the

school and kitchen. The Entrance barrier is closed for safety reasons at the following times: 8.45 - 9.10a.m. & 3.10 - 3.40p.m. Parents and children

should keep to the recognised footpaths and avoid crossing the car parking areas. We also ask that Parents do not park on the Hope School car park or in

front of local residents’ driveways.PLEASE AVOID PARKING ON KELVIN GROVE FOR YOUR CHILD’S

SAFETY. Sainsbury’s are happy for parents to park there and use the ginnel to walk their children into school.

At the time of writing school meals are available at the cost of £2.20 each day and this can be paid (£11 per week or termly) via the cash unit which can be found in the front entrance or handed to class teacher in a blue envelope. N.B. we cannot accept money directly at the school due to audit rules.

Each child will be issued with a pin number that can be used to credit their account.

A universal free school meal entitles children in foundation stage and KS1 to free school meals.

We encourage our children, especially Reception children, to have school meals.

Your child may be entitled to free meals, but these can only be authorised by the Local Education Authority. If you are in any doubt about this, contact School or the Borough Treasurer’s Department at Council Tax Offices, Whelley, Wigan; Tel: 828649.

A letter confirming changes needs to be given to the School office.

Some children bring packed lunches from home and these should be in bags or boxes clearly labelled with your child’s name.

These lunches should not contain glass bottles or fizzy drinks. As with School meals, we encourage parents to send in healthy lunch boxes for their children, please do not send chocolate or sweets into School; a chocolate coated biscuit/bar etc. is fine but not items like Mars Bars, Crunchies etc.

During the lunch break, children are under the care of meals supervisors to whom they are expected to be obedient and polite. If a child’s behaviour at lunchtime becomes unacceptable, then Parents will be notified and our yellow card system will be initiated.

Reception children will stay for lunch when they are full time. Children are encouraged to bring a piece of fresh fruit for break

times. Fruit is provided "Free" every afternoon for Infant children as part of the National Fruit Scheme.

Toast is available each morning break as a snack at a nominal cost of £10.00 for the whole term.

All children are reminded to bring water bottles for use during the day. Fresh drinking water to refill bottles is available around school.

Milk can be purchased for all pupils via online payment with the Coolmilk scheme at www.coolmilk.com
