CHRIS DIX – HEAD OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AT VFS GLOBAL Chris has been the Head of Business Development at VFS Global since January 2016 and is responsible for identifying new business opportunities, with a clear focus on developing new markets and strengthening client relationships. Chris joined VFS Global in 2011 as Regional Head for Europe and the Americas, following which he was appointed Chief Operating Officer for Europe and the Americas. Prior to VFS Global, Chris spent nearly 30 years as a career diplomat with the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. His last government assignment was as the UK Border Agency’s Regional Director for South Asia (2007 – 2011). Before that he was the Agency’s Regional Director for Africa (2004 – 2007), and Director of Visa Services for India (1999 – 2004). Chris is currently based in Dubai, UAE and has also worked in a number of other countries including India, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Switzerland, where he worked on refugee and humanitarian issues.

Violeta Moreno-Lax (ES) is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Law, Founding Director of the Immigration Law programme, and inaugural co-Director and co-founder of the Centre for European and International Legal Affairs (CEILA) at Queen Mary University of London. She is also Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges), where she teaches Justice and Home Affairs; and a Fellow of the Centre of European Law of King's College London; the EU Asylum Law Coordinator of the Refugee Law Initiative of the University of London; Co-Chair of The Refugee Law Observatory; Co-convener of the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) Migration Law Section; and member of the Steering Committee of the Migration Law Network. She has previously been a Lecturer in Law at the Universities of Liverpool and Oxford and held visiting positions at the Universities of Macquarie, New South Wales, Oxford, Nijmegen, and The Hague Academy of International Law. She has published widely in the areas of international and European refugee and migration law, including her monograph: Accessing Asylum in Europe (Oxford University Press, 2017). And she regularly consults for the EU institutions and other organisations active in the JHA field. One of her latest interventions has been as lead counsel in case of S.S. and Others v. Italy, currently pending in the European Court of Human Rights, denouncing the illegality of pull-backs and refoulement by proxy practices, acting as legal advisor of the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN), as part of the SAROBMED project: The Search and Rescue Observatory for the Mediterranean, that she coordinates.

Jan De Volder Short CV - English

Jan De Volder (°1967) lives and works in Belgium, splitting his time between Antwerp, Brussels and

Leuven. He has MA degrees in Romance Literature and Languages (University of Antwerp) and

Contemporary History (Catholic University of Louvain). In 1994, he obtained a PhD degree in Social

and Religious History in Italy. His dissertation on Vatican policy during the First World War, especially

regarding the German occupation of Belgium, was published in 1996 in French: Benoît XV et la

Belgique durant la Grande Guerre, Bibliothèque de l’Institut historique belge de Rome, Rome-

Brussels, 1996.

Currently, De Volder occupies the Cusanus Chair ‘Religion, Conflict and Peace’ of the Faculty of

Theology and Religious Studies of the KU Leuven.

Before this, De Volder worked as editor of the Catholic Flemish weekly Tertio. He often comments on

Church- and religion-related issues in the Belgian and international media.

In 2016, De Volder published Martyr. Vie et Mort du père Jacques Hamel (1930-2016) (Le Cerf, 2016)

on the French priest, slain in his church by Jihadist terrorists, a book which had since been translated

in several languages. In 2014, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of Cardinal Mercier’s

famous pastoral letter ‘Patriotism and Endurance’, De Volder wrote, in Dutch, Kardinaal Verzet.

imam Jamal Maftouhi , an account of the conversations on theological, political and societal issues

and a living example of interfaith dialogue. In 2009 he published De geest van Damiaan. Een heilige

voor onze tijd, Lannoo (230 p.), a biography of Father Damien, in the year of his canonization.

Translations were published in English (The Spirit of Father Damien, Ignatius Press), Italian (Edizioni

San Paolo) and Spanish (Editorial San Pablo).

As a senior member of the Community of Sant’Egidio in Belgium, he is committed to voluntary

service to the poor and to work for human rights, interfaith dialogue and peace and reconciliation,

especially in Africa. He is the head of the Sant’Egidio Brussels liaison office to the European

Institutions. He negotiated the agreement on the ‘Humanitarian Corridors for Syrian refugees’ with

the Belgian federal government and with the various Churches and Religions involved in the project.
