  • PaperworkA Pre-Nuptial Investigation must be completed, it is a questionnaire concerning freedom to marry and the understanding of marriage. The investigation must be completed in the presence of the parish priest or deacon. Baptismal certificates issued in the last 6 months, with notations, from the church of baptism are required. In mixed-faith marriages the Catholic will sign a form requesting permission from the Bishop to marry and attesting determination to maintain and share his/her faith with the spouse and children.

Marriage Prep Course: “Today and All the Days of Our Lives”This comprehensive course is covered over a four-day or an intensive two-day time frame for special circumstances. Each 1 1/2 to 2hr session covers two relevant topics for the couples preparation for married life. The following is the four week format:

Week1: Sacrament of Matrimony / Family of OriginWeek2: Romance, Disillusionment and Joy / Sex and SexualityWeek3: Communication with God and Each Other / Stewardship and FinancesWeek4: Planning & Parenting of Children / I Promise to Love You & Honor You All the Days of My Life

Celebrating Marriage in St. Philip ParishWeddings are special and joyful times for brides and grooms, for their families and friends, and for the parish community. The Church welcomes its members to celebrate God's active love in their lives and to solemnize their weddings in the context of our prayer as Christians. Marriage is a sacrament. More precisely, the husband and wife are a sacrament. Each spouse is an on-going sign to the other of Christ's love and grace; and together they are a sign of Christ's relationship to His Church.

In this spirit, St. Philip Parish provides the following guidelines for celebrating weddings in the place where our parish community gathers for prayer. Registered parishioners should contact one of the priests or deacons at least six months before the desired date for appropriate marriage preparation instruction.

    Marriage Preparations

    Introduction

  • When both the bride and groom are Catholic, the appropriate context to exchange marriage vows is within the Mass. The Wedding Mass consists of six main sections:

    I. The Entrance RiteII. The Liturgy of the WordIII. The Rite of MarriageIV. The Liturgy of the EucharistV. The Communion RiteVI. The Concluding Rite

There are instances when marriage vows are exchanged outside of Mass. When Marriage is celebrated outside of Mass, the ceremony consists of four main sections:

    Structure of Catholic Marriage Liturgy

    3~ ~

FOCCUS Each couple is required to fill out an online questionnaire through FOCCUS, a marriage prep resource and training utilized to "Facilitate Open, Caring Communication, Understanding and Study." FOCCUS is a tool used to help couples identify, discuss and work through important relationship issues before they get married.

Ministers for the CelebrationOrdinarily, a parish priest or deacon presides at the wedding. With the permission of the pastor, the couple may invite a guest priest or deacon to preside. For priests outside the diocese, permission must be obtained from the bishop. This arrangement should be made as early as possible to allow for appropriate civil and ecclesial delegation. Visiting priests are to observe Church law and follow parish policies regarding weddings. In the case of interfaith marriages, there are a number of options for involv-ing clergy from both faiths. Readers and Eucharistic Ministers may be selected by the couple in accordance with Church guidelines. It is recom-mended to use altar servers at weddings celebrated within Mass.

  • 4~ ~

    I. The Entrance RiteII. The Liturgy of the WordIII. The Rite of MarriageIV. The Concluding Rite

    I. The Entrance RiteThe Rite of Marriage envisions a very different entrance procession than the one to which most of us are accustomed. At best, a liturgical proces-sion includes the major participants of this liturgy. The procession ends when all take their appropriate places.

II. Liturgy of the WordOnly readings from the Scriptures may be used during this sacred worship. The Lector should be capable and motivated by faith, and adequately prepared for the role.

The Liturgy of the Word consists of the following elements:

    · One or two selections from the Old and/or New Testament· Responsorial Psalm · The Assembly's sung response to hearing God's Word· Gospel Acclamation (Alleluia) this sung response prepares us to listen to the Gospel.· Gospel Reading· Homily

III. The Rite of MarriageThe Groom and the Bride must assume their position as ministers of the sacrament. They must be clearly seen and heard.

The Rite of Marriage consists of the following elements:

    · Declaration of Intent· Exchange of Vows· Blessing and Exchange of Rings. The rings are a primary symbol of the commitment that the couple makes to each other. (The blessing and exchange of rings should be conducted with solemnity and care.)

    · Prayer of the Couple (optional)· General Intercessions (Universal Prayer) Such prayers must be approved by the presiding minister. The couple, or someone they select, may prepare the intercessions. They should include prayers for the needs of the Church, public authorities and salvation of the world, those oppressed by need, the local community (with emphasis on this wedding), and those who are deceased.

  • At this point, there is the choice to continue and conclude the sacramen-tal celebration with Mass or without Mass. *When marriage is celebrated between two Roman Catholics, celebrating the Mass is preferred.

When the Wedding is Celebrated at Mass(after the General Intercessions the Mass continues as follows)

IV. The Liturgy and the Eucharist

    · Preparation of the GiftsBread and wine are brought forward and presented to the Presider by the couple, parents, relatives, or friends.

    · The Eucharistic PrayerThe bread and wine brought forward as gifts is now consecrated. Bread becomes the Body of Christ and wine His Precious Blood. We now share in these gifts and become one with Christ.

The Communion Rite consists of the following elements:· The Lord's Prayer· Nuptial Blessing· The Sign of Peace

(We offer to share with one another the love, peace, and reconcilia-tion that comes from Jesus. (It is more than a handshake of welcome.))

The breaking of the bread and the preparation of the cups, accompanied by the "Lamb of God," is symbolic of our sharing in a common meal.

    · Reception of CommunionThe Eucharist is the highest expression of the presence of Christ who comes into our lives. (While the Catholic Church affirms the validity of Christian Baptism in other denominations and deeply respects the variety of Christian faith traditions, the Table of the Lord is open only to professed Catholics at this time in our history. We hope that everyone present will join in prayer for the Bride and Groom during these sacred moments, and also pray for the day when Christ's Body may be truly united in the Eucharistic Feast.)

IV. The Concluding Rite· We prepare to depart.· The Blessings of the couple and the assembly.· The Recessional

    The Gathering· Hospitality

Great care should be given to the greeting of guests and creating a mood of welcome and expectant joy. Every member of the wedding party (attendants, family members, and the couple themselves) shares the responsibility of contributing to a warm and comfortable atmosphere in the church. Attendants (both male and female) should be encouraged, above all others, to actively help guests feel "at home" and valued as participants in this sacramental celebration.

    · Seating the GuestsJust as the Bride and Groom are united, so are their family and friends joined together by this wedding.

    · ParticipationOften guests need help to realize that they are present as witnesses of the sacrament and participants in the prayer of the Church for the couple.

The following suggestions will help to increase involvement:

    · The couple should do all they can to encourage the guests to be active participants.· A wedding booklet or program can enable everyone to participate fully and assist those who are unfamiliar with Catholic liturgy. · A Cantor is helpful in announcing the hymns and leading the singing.

Music Music is integral to liturgy. Words which are sung express faith more powerfully, bring a sense of unity to the assembly, and impart a quality of joy and thanksgiving. A wedding is first of all a time of prayer, and music expresses and deepens the praise and worship of God. Therefore, the music and texts must be appropriate for the liturgical action. The Director of Music can assist each couple in making good choices which are aesthetically, technically, and expressively good music; have appropriate music and words for a service of worship; enable the people gathered to express their faith in this celebration. In most circumstances, the Director of Music is the primary resource for the planning and performance of the music for a wedding. It is advisable to contact him or her three to six months in advance of your wedding to confirm availability. The Music Director is also the contact for other vocal and instrumental soloists who provide music for our parish. The Music Director and Assistant Music Director can be reached at 269-963-2584.

Indoor/Outdoor CeremonyIn the Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo, marriages must take place in a parish church. Liturgies are not permitted in homes, gardens, parks, etc.

Members of our parish may celebrate their weddings at St. Philip Church. Former members of the parish need to speak both to their present pastor and to a priest at St. Philip Parish if they wish to solemnize their marriage in this church. Couples are expected to contact the parish office well in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding. Six months is the minimum requirement. However, individual circumstances, marriage instruction, paperwork, and/or availability of the church building and parish ministers may require more time than the minimum six months.

Church Hours and Wedding DatesOur Saturday wedding hours are 11a and 2p. To allow for sufficient time for the 4:30p Mass on Saturday, the church parking lot needs to be cleared out by 4p. Weddings are not scheduled on Sundays. By way of exception, weddings may be celebrated on a Friday evening or another week night NOTE: There are some times in the church year when the liturgical calendar discourages or prohibits the celebration of weddings. For example, the season of Lent is a time of penance in the church com-munity and that spirit affects all parish liturgies between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

Wedding Coordinator The task of the Parish Wedding Coordinator is to handle details of your wedding event; keeping you organized keeping us organized, and reduc-ing the stress of a myriad of tasks (e.g. paperwork, scheduling, room arrangements, opening buildings). The Wedding Coordinator will meet with the couple at least 3 months before the wedding to prepare a Wed-ding Plan, conduct the rehearsal, and will be present the day of your wedding (before, during and after your wedding) to ensure that everything runs smoothly and is as stress free as possible for you. To further assure a coordinated sacramental celebration, the details are cross-referenced for the Presider, the musician(s), the bride and groom, and any other necessary individuals.

Call the parish office at 269-968-6645 to arrange for a meeting with the Priest. A mutually convenient date and time will be reserved for your wedding. Please set your wedding date with the church before making plans with a caterer, etc. You will need to fill out the necessary marriage

    Planning the Wedding

  • papers. For this, the parish priest needs a copy of your baptismal record sent from the parish of record. If you are unable to produce a copy, please identify the place and approximate date of your baptism.

The forms required to be filled out ask for information about both parties in order to ascertain the intention and commitment that each has for marriage.

Stipends and Fees We ask a church fee of $150 to cover our expenses. The Wedding Coor-dinator fee is $150. (If this is a hardship, we will work with you to reach a fair solution.) The fees for the Organist/Pianist $125, Cantor $85, Soloist(s) or instrumentalist(s) are between $85-$150 specific pricing will be discussed when you meet with the Director of Music and the Wedding Coordinator when preparing your Wedding Plan. A gift for the Presider is left to the discretion of the couple. The current average donation is $150 for the Presider. All stipends and fees will be collected at the wedding rehearsal.

The Wedding RehearsalThe rehearsal will be conducted by the Parish Wedding Coordinator. The usual time for the rehearsal is the evening before the wedding between 5p and 7p. It is not the time to discuss and make decisions but to practice.

The following format is suggested for the rehearsal:

    · Prayer· Inform ushers of their ministry and remind the entire wedding party that their role is to welcome the guests.· Practice the processional and other liturgical actions.· Lectors should read their Scripture passages to get a sense of acoustics and receive any helpful suggestions about their proclamation of the Word. They should seat themselves to allow easy access to the ambo.· Other ministers not from this parish (e.g., Ministers of the Eucharist and Servers) should receive instructions.· Bring to the rehearsal: marriage license; all stipulated fees and stipends.

Music for the Mass and the CeremonyPlease visit our website for music and Psalm selections.

ConfessionThe Priest does not normally attend rehearsals, although depend-ing on the day and time the Priest may offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation to anyone who wants to go to confession after the rehearsal. You should also schedule an appointment with him to do so.

Ministers for the Celebration: Bride and GroomIn the Roman Catholic tradition, the Bride and Groom minister the sacra-ment of marriage to one another; a Priest and at least two witnesses must also be present. They act as witnesses to the sacred covenant and are accorded special dignity as they accompany the couple in this celebra-tion, but they should never distract from the central focus or the liturgical action.

AssemblyIt consists of the friends, and especially the family, who have shared the faith and nurtured its development. They are the people who continue to support and celebrate this covenant. The entire assembly exercises a ministry of prayer, especially in the moments that require a response to God's word or action (such as the psalm, the Gospel acclamation and The Lords' Prayer.)

PriestOrdinarily, one of the parish priests will preside. Another ordained relative or friend may be invited to preside with the permission of the Pastor. By mutual agreement, Pastors of other denominations may take a part in the marriage rite.

Music MinisterBecause music is integral to the celebration of liturgy, it is most important to engage the services of a musician with professional and liturgical back-ground. St. Philip's Director of Music is the primary resource for the plan-ning and performance of the music for a wedding in this parish. It is advis-able to contact the Director once the date of the wedding has been estab-lished with the parish office. Generally, the Director is also the contact for other vocal and instrumental soloists who provide music in our parish. The parish does, however, permit other musicians to provide the music. Most professional musicians with a church background are familiar with music that enhances a truly Christian celebration. Any questions that arise should be referred to the Director of Music by calling 963-2584.

LectorsThose who serve as parish Lectors may serve at a wedding. A couple also may invite family members or friends who are of our own faith com-munion to serve as Lectors. But in all cases, they should possess neces-sary skills for proclaiming God's Word effectively and reverently. They must attend the wedding rehearsal so that they may practice in the church using the sound system.

    Wedding Attendants

  • 10~ ~

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy CommunionThe consecrated service of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion for the bread and for the cup may be necessary if the wedding is celebrated during Mass. Friends or family members of the bride and groom who are commissioned Extraordinary Ministers in their home parishes may be invited to serve at a wedding here. They should attend the wedding rehearsal so that they are familiar with the worship space. Those who serve as Extraordinary Ministers for this parish may be asked if there are no friends or family members available.

ServersAltar Servers from the parish may fill this role if the couple wishes. Again, friends or family may assume this role provided they attend the wedding rehearsal. (The Server's role at a wedding Mass is not essential and is rarely used.)

Hospitality MinistersThe groom's attendants usually function as ushers and thus fulfill part of the Ministry of Hospitality. It is a mature and gracious gesture formembers of the wedding party and family to act in this capacity. Some-times extra ushers are enlisted as well.

Ring Bearers and Flower GirlsThey are not ministers, nor are their services required for the celebration of marriage. We ask couples who invite children for these roles to consider carefully the age of the children involved and whether their pres-ence will add or detract from the joyful solemnity of the celebration. In planning your wedding, try to remember that young children may easily distract from its sacred purpose. If you do decide to have a very young ring bearer or flower girl in your wedding, an adult must be in the narthex (vestibule) during the procession in the event that they refuse to process down the aisle.

  • Because of the relationship of the sacred covenant and sacred space, in the Diocese of Kalamazoo, a Catholic marriage must be celebrated in a church or chapel.

Liturgical DecorLiturgical seasons determine the church décor. These adornments will not be changed for a wedding. Nor should wedding décor detract from the liturgical nature of the event.

CandlesThe purpose of candles is to highlight the places of liturgical action, to enhance the beauty of the church, and to aid the spirit of the assembly's prayer. The church has two different sets of tall candelabras available for weddings. Candles on pews (if used at all) must by globed and securely fastened with protected clamps so as not to scratch the pews.

FlowersFloral arrangements may be used to enhance the sacred setting as long as they do not diminish or interfere with the proper focus of the sacred action. Elaborate usage of flowers is discouraged. Plants or flowers from special liturgical feasts (e.g., lilies at Easter time, or poinsettias during Christmas season) may already be in the church. We welcome any such arrangements you wish to leave in the church after the wedding. We also respect your plans to take them to your reception. We ask that any petals dropped by flower girls be silk, as the oils from real flower petals can be ground into the carpet and tile.

Rice, Balloons, etc...These are not related to any Christian custom. To avoid any safety hazard, and to minimize custodial work, these items are not permitted. Please inform family and friends.

    Environment of the Worship Space

    11~ ~

  • Other Considerations

The parish expects the people whom you hire for services at the wedding ceremony (and even those who are members of the wedding party) to respect our worship place and this event as HOLY. This includes behav-ior appropriate in a church: proper attire; no gum chewing, smoking, or use of alcohol on the premises before, during, or after the ceremony.

FloristPlease check with the Wedding Coordinator regarding the time and place of your flower delivery because other scheduled activities may require special arrangements. Decorating may take place the hour before the wedding. Flowers may be placed around the altar, but never on it, nor should they hide the altar, or hinder movement around it. Flower arrange-ments should not harm church furniture (e.g., no wire, sticky tape, etc.; nor should they ever be placed on the grand piano.)

Photographer/VideographerPlease remember that the wedding liturgy is a sacred and communal prayer. Thus, persons taking pictures should always be inconspicuous and discreet, and never be a distraction to the assembly, the Presider, or

    Professional Services

TraditionsMany traditions have accrued to weddings through the years. It is impor-tant that the couple and their guests understand the historical roots of those traditions before including them in their ceremony.

Unity CandleSome couples choose to use the symbol of the lighting of the unity candle during their wedding ceremony. It is not part of the liturgical tradition. The couple by exchange of their vows, and the blessing and exchange of their rings, stand as a symbol of unity between Christ and His Church. A more appropriate use of the unity candle may be at the wedding reception.

Marian Altar VisitIf a couple wishes to observe the pious custom of seeking the interces-sion of Our Lady, it normally occurs after communion. The couple usually takes a flower to Our Lady's altar and spends a few moments in prayer.

    12~ ~

  • Guidelines in ReviewIf the church is needed for other services, such as funerals, they will be scheduled prior to 11a. Plans for taking pictures should be made accord-ingly. Preparation rooms are available for dressing and must be cleaned and vacated immediately after the wedding. A member of the wedding party will be assigned by the Wedding Coordinator for cleanup.

    * No alcohol or smoking will be allowed on church property. Please Respect Church PropertySanctuary furnishings are not to be moved. All rented items, such as cande-labras, are to be removed immediately after the wedding. Musical instru-ments are for the use of the wedding musicians only.

Guidelines for Usage of Church Facilities

    13~ ~

the wedding party. If the people taking pictures have never been inside St. Philip Church, they may attend the wedding rehearsal to help get a sense of the lighting, where the participants will be sitting/standing, and to ask the Wedding Coordinator any questions.

Videotaping may be done only with available light (no floodlights). No "wandering" video cameras are allowed. A stationary one may be placed in the choir loft and/or inconspicuously near the side altar, as long as it doesn't interfere with movements in the sanctuary itself.

Movement by the photographer should be minimal. (Your guests should be advised that picture taking is regulated.)

The people of our parish are pleased to allow wedding parties to use our church for posed pictures. Please look upon the use of sacred space as a privilege granted on a special occasion.

Church furniture may NOT be rearranged for taking photographs. Food and drink are inappropriate in the sanctuary and the church proper. People should speak with modulated voice, aware of others who are there at the same time to pray, celebrate Reconciliation, etc. Pictures may also be taken after the wedding if there is no conflict with another liturgy. (Please confirm these times through the Wedding Coordinator.)
