Why does Las Vegas need a food hub? This question is critical to understanding our project. Food hubs make communities healthier and more sustainable by improving nutrition and expanding and diversifying the local food system.

Food hubs not only bring fresh fruits and vegetables into communities, but they also substantially improve the nutritional quality of those foods. Fresh produce begins to loose nutrient value soon after harvesting. Vegetables can lose 15 to 55 percent of vitamin C within a week. Producing food locally reduces the amount of time fruits and vegetables spend in transit.

Local food systems lower a community’s overall ecological impact. Food shipped over long distances has an exponentially higher embodied energy and associated carbon footprint than food produced locally.

There is a direct economic benefit for communities to produce food locally. Each dollar spent within a community recirculates through the local economy, creating an economic multiplier that lifts the economy as a whole. When food is purchased from distant growers, wealth is drained from the community.

For these reasons, it is in every community’s best interest to develop and grow a robust local food system. For cities such as Las Vegas, which face many environmental and economic challenges, a food hub is one of the most effective strategies for achieving long-term

community health.

Why combine food and wellness? Our goal is to make downtown Las Vegas a healthier community. Food is an important part of this issue, but so is physical exercise and inner wellness. We integrated a food hub and wellness center so that we could enhance community wellness on multiple levels.

Visitors can shop for fresh, locally-sourced foods on the market

floor or dine at our cafe.

Community members can attend yoga classes and workshops in

meditation.

The teaching kitchen and allows visitors to attend cooking classes taught by Las Vegas’s world renowned chefs. Other classes offered include family nutrition, sustainable living, and urban gardening.

The indoor production facilities allow visitors to learn about urban agriculture and indoor growing. These facilities will also produce fresh greens and herbs for the market and cafe.

Educational Wellness encourages exploration and growth through creative and stimulating activities. Market Square hosts a number of classes and workshops that allow you to expand your knowledge and skills.

Inner Wellness inspires clarity, relaxation, stress reduction, and is a vital part of a well-balanced lifestyle. Our program offers classes in yoga and guided meditation.

Nutritional Wellness - Healthy food options not only help prevent illness, but also keep your body functioning at its best. Market Square offers a wide array of healthy and locally-sourced foods that can be purchased in our store or delivered to your home or business.

Community Wellness - By providing a combination of healthy food choices, community education, and physical wellness programs, we seek to nurture community health at every level.

Physical Wellness is key to achieving long-term health. Regular physical activity strengthens bones and muscles, reduces the risk of disease, and can improve overall health. Market Square offers yoga, mediation, Tai chi, and massage.

Environmental Wellness promotes a balance between human and natural environments. At Market Square, we are committed to raising awareness about ways to protect the environment through our building, educational programs, gardening, and food production.

Market Square Food & Wellness Center

The mission of the Food & Wellness Center is to promote long-term community health in Las Vegas and the surrounding area. This will create a hub for locally produced foods, food education, and the practice and study of wellness and healthy living. The Food & Wellness Center will help to nurture the local food system by providing a market for local producers and a source of

fresh foods in the community. The center will also serve as a source for ongoing community engagement on food, food production, nutrition, and strategies for building a sustainable community.

Market Square provides a green reprieve from the surrounding built environment. Designs throughout the project incorporate elements of the natural world that contribute to wellness and off er a variety of interactions with the living environment.

Modesto Ash Trees shade pedestrians as they walk toward and around Market Square. These trees are hardy and heat resistant.

Aloe Vera + Prickly Pear plants are both drought resistant plants. Aloe is medicinal and Prickly Pear is edible. Together they create permeable edges.

Local School Tour of Facilities Market Square | LBC Petal | Health and Happiness: Biophilic Environment

The plaza includes an abundance of plants that provide a natural and sustainable biophilic landscape. With the shade canopy diffusing sunlight during the hottest parts of the day and retracting in the evening, the plaza is able to host a number of activities. Educational tours are one service we offer that provide an interactive learning experience about both indigenous, locally adapted, and agricultural plant species. 12:00 PM

Farmers’ Market

The outdoor plaza provides a flexible space for public gathering and events. The design features moveable furniture, indiginous plants, and a retractable shade canopy that combine to create a comfortable outdoor environment that can be active for much of the year. The space will provide outdoor seating and is designed to also provide a flexible venue for farmers’ markets, food festivals, performances, and film screenings.

Urban Agriculture in the Community Garden Market Square | LBC Petal | Place: Urban Agiculture

While this garden space is accessible to community members who volunteer at Market Square, visibility into the space allows for passersby to discover how food in urban environments can be cultivated.

The community garden also fosters the development of a community identity and spirit. It not only offers the community access to healthy food options, but restores members’ agency over how their food is produced and delivered.

The community garden can also serve a therapeutic function for members by inspiring clarity, relaxation, and stress reduction.

Urban agriculture occurs within two spaces on Market Square’s site:

the Production/ Research space and the Community Garden. The

production space provides produce to the market space upstairs. It also

acts a research center for future development in indoor growing systems.

The community garden serves its member’s needs.

Both spaces utilize a combination of seedling tables and brief case

aeroponic systems for growing. These systems were selected in an

effort to conserve water and optimize yield per square foot.
