EUROPE
Homo georgicus, which lived roughly 1.8 million years agoin Georgia, is the earliest hominid to have been discovered inEurope. Other hominid remains, dating back roughly1 million years, have been discovered in
Atapuerca, Spain. Neanderthal man (named afterthe Neandertal valley in Germany) appeared in Europe150,000 years ago and disappeared from the fossil recordabout 28,000 BC, with this extinction probably due to climatchange, and their final refuge being present-day Portugal. The Neanderthals were supplanted by modern humans (Cro
Magnons), who appeared in Europe around 43 to 40thousand years ago

Geology
The Geology of Europe is hugely varied and complex, and givesrise to the wide variety of landscapes found across thecontinent, from the Scottish Highlands to the rolling plains ofHungary.
Europe's most significant feature is the dichotomy betweenhighland and mountainous Southern Europe and a vast, partiallyunderwater, northern plain ranging from Ireland in the west tothe Ural Mountains in the east. These two halves are separatedby the mountain chains of the Pyrenees and Alps/Carpathians.The northern plains are delimited in the west by
the Scandinavian Mountains and the mountainous parts of theBritish Isles. Major shallow water bodies submerging parts ofthe northern plains are the Celtic Sea, the North Sea, the BalticSea complex and Barents Sea.
The northern plain contains the old geological continentofBaltica, and so may be regarded geologically as the "main
continent", while peripheral highlands and mountainous regionsin the south and west constitute fragments from various othergeological continents. Most of the older geology of westernEurope existed as part of the ancient microcontinentAvalonia.

Culture
The culture of Europe can be described as a series ofoverlapping cultures; cultural mixes exist across thecontinent. There are cultural innovations andmovements, sometimes at odds with each other. Thusthe question of "common culture" or "commonvalues" is complex.
The foundation of European culture was laid bytheGreeks, strengthened by the Romans, stabilizedby Christianity, reformed by the 15th-century Renaissance and Reformation, modernized bythe 18th century Age of Enlightenment and globalised
by successive European empires between the 16thand 20th centuries. According to historian Hilaire Belloc, for several
centuries the peoples of Europe based their self-identification on the remaining traces of the Romanculture and on the concept ofChristendom, becausemany European-wide military alliances were of
religious nature: the Crusades (10951291),the Reconquista (711-1492), the Battle ofLepanto (1571).[

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northernreland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK)
or Britain, is a sovereign state located off the north-westerncoast of continental Europe T he country includes the islandof Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Irelandand many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part ofthe UK that shares a land border with another statethe Republic of IrelandApart from this land border, the UK issurrounded by the Atlantic Ocean n the west and north, the North Sea in the east, the English Channel in the south, andthe Irish Sea in the west.
istory
onehenge and other examples of prehistoric culture are all thatemain of the earliest inhabitants of Britain. Celtic peoples followed.oman invasions of the 1st century B.C. brought Britain into contactith continental Europe. When the Roman legions withdrew in the 5th
entury A.D. , Britain fell easy prey to the invading hordes of Angles, axons, and Jutes from Scandinavia and the Low Countries. Thevasions had little effect on the Celtic peoples of Wales and Scotland.
even large Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were established, and the originalritons were forced into Wales and Scotland. It was not until the 10thentury that the country finally became united under the kings of
Wessex. Following the death of Edward the Confessor (1066), a dispute
bout the succession arose, and William, Duke of Normandy, invadedngland, defeating the Saxon king, Harold II, at the Battle of Hastings066). The Norman conquest introduced Norman French law andudalism.

climate
The United Kingdom has a temperate climate, with plentiful rainfall all year round.Thetemperature varies with the seasons seldomdropping below 11C (12 F) or rising above 35
C (95 F).The prevailing wind is from the south-west and bears frequent spells of mild and wetweather from the Atlantic Ocean, although theeastern parts are mostly sheltered from thiswindas the majority of the rain falls over thewestern regions the eastern parts are thereforethe driest. Atlantic currents, warmed by the GulfStream, bring mild winters; especially in the westwhere winters are wet and even more so overhigh ground. Summers are warmest in the south-east of England, being closest to the Europeanmainland, and coolest in the north. Heavysnowfall can occur in winter and early spring on

The Bank of England is theUK's central bank and is responsible for issuing notesand coins in the nation's currency, the pound sterling.Banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland retain theright to issue their own notes, subject to retainingenough Bank of England notes in reserve to covertheir issue. Pound sterling is the world's third-largest reserve currency (after the U.S. Dollar and theEuro).Since 1997 the Bank of England's MonetaryPolicy Committee, headed by the Governor of theBank ofEngland, has been responsible forsetting interest rates at the level necessary to achievethe overall inflation target for the economy that is setby the Chancellor each year.

Historically, indigenous British people werethought to bedescended from the variousethnic groups that settled there before the11th century: the Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Norse and the Normans. Welshpeople could be the oldest ethnic group inthe UK. Recent genetic studies have shownthat more than 50 per cent of England'sgene pool contains Germanic Y
chromosomes, though other recent geneticanalysis indicates that "about 75 per centof the traceable ancestors of the modernBritish population had arrived in the Britishisles by about 6,200 years ago, at the startof the British Neolithic or Stone Age", and
that the British broadly share a commonancestry with the Basque people
