Adelaide Desalination Plant Australia

Client South Australian Water Corporation

The Adelaide Desalination Plant is a 100 gigalitre per year

plant augmenting Adelaide’s potable water supplies. The

plant uses salt water reverse osmosis technology and

includes inlet conduit and brine outfall to the ocean and a

10 kilometre transfer pipeline to the Happy Valley Water

Treatment Plant.

Aurecon was engaged to provide technical advice to the

client including process design, civil, structural,

mechanical and electrical engineering advice, tunnel

design and advice, and power supply investigations.

Aurecon also coordinated geotechnical and

environmental investigations including marine, terrestrial

and toxicology studies.

Vaal River Eastern Sub-system Augmentation Project (VRESAP) South Africa

Client Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority

The VRESAP is an emergency water transfer scheme to

abstract water from the Vaal Dam and pump it to the

Knoppiesfontein division structure over a distance of

115 kilometres. Aurecon was appointed to provide design,

tender and contract administration services, as well as

supervise construction of all the civil engineering

components.

The project has a design capacity of 5.4 cubic metres per

second and consists of abstraction works in the Vaal

Dam, a low lift pump station and a high lift pump station.

The low lift pump station has four duty and two standby

700 kilowatt pumps, transferring flow through a total head

of 29 metres to a balancing dam and desilting works

upstream of the high lift pump station. The high lift pump

station is equipped with one standby and three duty

pumps containing two pumps per set. The project also

entails a single 1.9 metre diameter rising main covering a

distance of 115 kilometres.

Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) Project Australia

Client Melbourne Water Corporation

One of the most complex and challenging sewerage

tunnelling projects undertaken in Australia, this project

replaced the existing 110 year old Melbourne Main Sewer

with a new 2.4 kilometre long gravity sewer underneath

Melbourne’s inner city and the Yarra River.

As Project Manager, Contract Superintendent and

Contract Administrator, Aurecon helped deliver the MMSR

project from the planning and design phase through to the

completion of all major construction works in May 2012,

safely, on time and 5 per cent below budget.

The tunnel was constructed using an Earth Pressure

Balance Machine with a 2.4 metre internal diameter

segmental concrete lining with a secondary lining of glass

fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) to provide a finished

internal diameter of 1.8 metres. Six permanent tunnel

access shafts were provided and 1.9 kilometres of new

branch and reticulation sewers were constructed by pipe

jacking methods to connect existing sewers to the new

sewer tunnel.

Maguga Dam Swaziland

Client Komati Basin Water Authority

Maguga Dam supplies water for irrigation and domestic

use in Swaziland and South Africa. The 115 metre high

clay core rockfill dam features an innovative un-gated

labyrinth type spillway (one of the largest of its type in the

world) with a 100 metre wide concrete lined chute ending

in a deflector bucket, discharging into a 40 metre deep

plunge pool.

Aurecon assumed a leading role in both design and

project management. A detailed geotechnical site

investigation was undertaken by Aurecon to supplement

data from feasibility studies with a rockfill embankment

was selected as the most suitable construction method.

A full environmental impact assessment was carried out

and a comprehensive mitigation plan was strictly followed

to minimise the adverse effects of construction on the

surrounding physical and social environment.

Watercare Project Hobson New Zealand

Gold Award

An ageing sewer pipe crossing Auckland’s Hobson Bay

was replaced with a three kilometre long, 3.7 metre

diameter tunnel. A new six cubic metres per second

pump station was constructed in the Orakei Domain.

Aurecon was involved in all of the preliminary and detailed

design for the project. Tunnelling technologies never

before seen in New Zealand were applied to the project.

Innovative approaches to vortex drop shaft arrangements,

grit control and pump station design were required due to

the challenging site conditions.

The upgrade provides for population growth in the area

and will increase recreational opportunities in the bay.

The tunnel’s extra capacity will reduce wet weather

overflows, resulting in improved environmental outcomes.

George Municipality Emergency Reuse of Treated Effluent South Africa

Winner

Following a severe drought in the George Municipality

area of South Africa, a scheme was implemented for the

indirect reuse of treated effluent. The aim of the scheme

was to ensure a sustainable supply of raw water to meet

potable water demands in the region. From a resource

perspective, the indirect reuse of treated effluent is not

only an environmentally sustainable approach but also

an economically sustainable one, as water that has

already been collected from natural raw water

resources can be reused without the need to develop

new natural resources.

Water can safely be continually recycled and blended

with new natural raw water to reduce the demand on

other natural water resources. The scheme can provide

almost 45 per cent of the current water demand to the

town of George, relieving pressure on the existing raw

water systems.

Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Outfall New Zealand

Gold Award

To protect and improve the quality of Auckland’s beaches,

a new tunnel and outfall was constructed which allows

treated water to be discharged 2.7 kilometres offshore,

compared to the previous distance of 600 metres.

Aurecon delivered all of the detailed design for the tunnel,

the marine outfall pipe and the 38 metre deep cascade

drop shaft, which was the first use of a cascade in

New Zealand.

The hydraulic design required an analysis of air

entrainment, initial dilution, headloss and saltwater

expulsion issues for the treated effluent discharge, and

shear stress and flow characteristics. The transition riser

was a critical asset and was designed to improve flushing

and to facilitate maintenance operations using a 3D

computational fluid dynamic model.

Luggage Point Advanced Water Treatment Plant Australia

Winner

The Luggage Point Advanced Water Treatment Plant

formed part of the Western Corridor Recycled Water

Project, the largest recycled water scheme in the

southern hemisphere.

Aurecon provided multidisciplinary engineering

design, design management, construction support,

commissioning support and operator training to the

Alliance. Aurecon also undertook plume dispersion

modelling and detailed design of the reverse osmosis

concentrated marine outfall.

The intake structure was designed to maintain

continuous operation of the existing wastewater treatment

plant and to enable complete capture of effluent during

low flow periods.

Berg Water Project South Africa

Premium Award

Undertaken to augment the water supply of the Western

Cape region of South Africa, Aurecon provided extensive

input to this significant project as a member of the

Berg River Consultants joint venture. The project consists of

the Berg River Dam (a 62 metre high concrete faced rockfill

dam), the Berg Supplement Scheme comprising two pump

stations with capacities of up to six cubic metres per second

and an abstraction works including a weir, sediment

exclusion works and balancing dam as well as 12 kilometres

of steel pipelines, up to 1 500 millimetres diameter.

Particular innovations in the dam design include dynamic

compaction of alluvial deposits in portions of the dam

foundations and the use of articulated slabs with special

water-stop features to cater for potential differential

settlement. An exceptional features of the outlet works is

their ability to mimic periodic natural floods of up to

200 cubic metres per second that are necessary to mitigate

the impact on the ecology and morphology of the river.
