Safety in design Safety in design forms the foundation of Aurecon’s
construction capabilities. Integrating comprehensive hazard
identification and risk assessment methods early in the
design process, Aurecon’s focus on safety in design
encompasses all design including facilities, hardware,
systems, equipment, products, tooling, materials, energy
controls, layout and configuration.
Systems assurance Systems engineering and systems assurance are vital
processes in delivering infrastructure and construction
projects, within complex operating environments. Through
our systems assurance expertise, Aurecon can help clients
develop and implement systems that meet project
objectives and specifications, while also achieving the
highest standards of safety and reliability across the life
cycle of the project.

A vibrant service mix
The Central Terminal Building at OR Tambo International Airport South Africa
Client Airports Company South Africa
The completion of the Central Terminal Building was vital
for the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup as the airport
served as the key point of entry to and from South Africa,
forming a literal ‘gateway to Africa’ for all tourists.
Aurecon’s involvement in this large, complex project
comprised civil and structural engineering, including the
implementation of a complex glass and aluminium façade
system central to the terminal’s visual appeal. Aurecon
also provided wet services and mechanical engineering,
including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC).
The construction of the terminal was completed with
minimal disruption of existing operations by careful
sequencing and collaboration with the client and the
contractor.
Our global success stories
TrackStar Alliance Australia
Client TrackStar Alliance
TrackStar Alliance is an integrated infrastructure delivery
business that harnesses the best skills of four
experienced business partners, Queensland Rail, Thiess,
Aurecon and AECOM. Established in June 2006,
TrackStar Alliance has designed and constructed a series
of rail infrastructure projects in South East Queensland
including the Caboolture to Beerburrum Track Duplication,
the Robina to Varsity Lakes Rail Extension, the Corinda to
Darra Rail Upgrade and the Beerwah Rail Crossing.
The Alliance is currently constructing the Stage 2
Richlands to Springfield Project, that will help reduce
congestion on the Centenary Highway, potentially taking
2 500 cars off the road during peak traffic times. Key
features of this project include a 9.5 kilometre dual track
passenger rail line, two new stations, an integrated bus
and rail interchange, seven rail bridges and more than
seven kilometres of cycle pathways.
Our global success stories
Meydan Racecourse Development United Arab Emirates
Client Dubai Roads and Transport Authority
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority appointed
Aurecon, in joint venture with Al Burj Engineering
Consultants, for the design, tender documentation and
construction supervision for the required road network
and bridges.
Successful collaboration between all stakeholders
ensured the construction of the road network and the
bridges were completed in time for the 2010 World Cup
event at the Racecourse. The tight deadline was the main
driver in determining many aspects of the design
philosophy adopted by the joint venture with tender
documents being compiled to ensure phasing of the
works could be accommodated.
Construction on the first phase of the road network
commenced in August 2007 and was completed on
schedule at the end of March 2010. The project, which
played its part in the ultimate success of the event, now
forms an integral part of the Meydan landscape.
Our global success stories
Gautrain Rapid Rail Link South Africa
Client Gauteng Provincial Government Consortium Bombela Concession Company
The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state of the art
dedicated rapid rail line between Johannesburg, Pretoria
and OR Tambo International Airport, a fast growing region
with increasing pressure on existing transportation
infrastructure.
The project’s ten stations are linked by approximately
150 kilometres of rail. Aurecon was awarded Detail
Design Package 6A, the main distinguishing aspect of
which is the Viaduct V5c. This viaduct is the single longest
viaduct on the project, founded on extremely difficult
subsoil dolomite formations and situated in an urban
environment.
Our bridge, geotechnical and road experts helped devise
a cost-effective, efficient and environmentally friendly
transport solution for the most densely developed area in
Gauteng. The Gautrain project is set to play a pivotal role
in the economic development of the Gauteng Province.
Our global success stories
Air New Zealand Nelson Hangar New Zealand
Winner
Aurecon was the structural engineer for a new hangar
facility at Nelson Airport, New Zealand. The hangar is a
large 80 by 60 metre free span structural steel building
with a clear height of 9.5 metres and overall height of
15 metres to the apex.
The roof structure was built on the ground with all
cladding, insulation, lighting, heaters and cabling fitted at
ground level. Following construction of the roof structure,
the roof was jacked up onto concrete columns and the
wall cladding finished. A joint free, post-tensioned
floor was then poured inside the closed in hangar.
Aurecon’s solution met the client’s size requirements,
ensured a shorter construction period and allowed for cost
savings due to the simple fabrication.

New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards 2010 Building and Construction
Innovative engineering enabled 11 floors of luxury
apartments, and associated car parking, to be constructed
above the world-renowned Stamford Plaza 5 Star Hotel in
Auckland’s central business district.
Aurecon was appointed for structural engineering,
geotechnical engineering, facade engineering and
surveying of the existing building.
Innovations included installing three tuned mass dampers,
weighing a total of 380 tonnes, to reduce the wind
accelerations experienced by occupants in the building.

South African Institute of Civil Engineering Project Awards 2010 International
Construction World’s Best Projects 2010 Civil Engineering and Building Contractors (outside South Africa)
After the last permanent structure was destroyed in the Civil
War, Aurecon, together with joint venture partners Gabeng
and BKS, were appointed for the design and preparation of
bid documents and site supervision for the 880 metre long
Cunene River Bridge project, currently the longest bridge
in Angola.
Using a temporary fill, a working platform on the flood plain
was created so piling work could operate non-stop during
the five month flood plain inundation. The 110 friction piles,
with a width of 1.2 metres and an average length of 25
metres were accommodated in the shortest time possible.
To meet time constraints, 100 girder sections and more
than 1 000 precast concrete deck slabs were
simultaneously constructed in China and on site,
respectively. A separate site was set up to weld girders
which were launched using hydraulic jacks. Before the
bridge could be launched, a reinforced substructure
consisting of 16 piers and the two abutments were
constructed.

The Common User Facility in South Australia is a
national strategic asset that is playing a key role in the
building of the new Air Warfare Destroyers for the Royal
Australian Navy.
Aurecon was the design consultant for this technically
challenging and complex multidisciplinary project, which
was delivered on time and constructed to the approved
budget.
Work was performed on land, over water and under water,
with much of it carried out on the edge of the Port River,
requiring substantial pre-construction works.
The Port River is a dolphin sanctuary and stringent
environmental controls were enforced to ensure minimal
impact on the river’s ecology.
