I have designed products, services, websites and brands during my 15-year

design career.

Product, UX/UI & Visual Designer

mt

I am an Australian Permanent Resident, originally hailing from Vancouver, Canada. Over the past 7 years, I have

designed 13 products at various web software companies and digital agencies. I have a background in Product, UX/UI and Graphic Design that stretches back to 2000 when I

owned my own graphic and web design studio, partnering with 100 clients.

I attended the University of British Columbia (2003-2006) graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Art with a secondary emphasis in Psychology. I was Co-Designer of ARTiculate, a student art magazine, and Designer of the

2006 UBC BFA Grad Catalog. I was captain of a recreational volleyball team.

The last 12 years have seen me working as a member of digital teams as a Product, UX/UI and Visual Designer at web software companies, start-ups, design and digital

agencies and consultancies as well as at national and multi-national companies. I have studied interaction design at the

Interaction Design Foundation.

I am a self-motivated, multi-disciplinary designer who understands people, inclusive

design, and design thinking. I have refined my design craft and process over many years. I can

strategise, research, conceive new products, design, and oversee design. I have designed and conducted usability tests and performed considerable research activities for many new

and existing product launches. I have branded 75 companies.

Elegant, intuitive, considered work

mt

I moved to Hobart from Vancouver, Canada with my wife in June 2016 when she began a permanent lecturing

position in Classics at the University of Tasmania. We love living in Hobart and exploring the island of Tasmania

and the cities and regions of Australia.

This case study shows my design process in practice.

Vivi is a SaaS screen share service employing a custom-manufactured hardware box, platform agnostic app, and administrative portal that manages and coordinates all platform activities, users, devices, digital signage, analytics, resources, resellers and more.

Case Study: Vivi Administrative Portal My role was to set the new tone and capabilities for the business through its next-generation administrative portal design.

As a consultant I conducted all research, design and testing for a portal that will set Vivi as a clear industry leader.

Page 9: Mark Trischuk · • Customer feedback • Usability studies • Audience analysis and personas Defining • Unearthing and crystallising the problems we are aiming to solve. Ideating

mt

Stakeholder Interviews

I conducted several stakeholder interviews with the aim of getting a complete understanding of the workings of the existing administrative portal, which was a rudimentary patchwork built by developers over time never having seen a designer’s touch. I established the aspirations for the next-generation administrative portal, pain points with the current interface and processes, shortcomings in the configuration, features and usability, and a wish list of hopes for the new design.

I interviewed the support analyst and the operations manager, who both use the portal regularly, the chief technology officer who oversees its development, and a junior developer whose work focused on some of the areas Vivi was keen to build out and improve.

Existing user interviews, research and feature audit

PRODUCT DESIGN PROCESS

A boardroom meeting invitational was conducted where nine local IT admins and school administrators who use the main product and existing administrative portal were interviewed as a group about their experience with the administrative portal. From our directed and open discussion we established the manner in which the portal was currently used, major and minor pain points, shortcomings and opportunities, hopeful wish list items and nice-to-haves. The aim was to be a sort of genie and grant them their wishes for a future administrative portal that would satisfy all their hopes and dreams for solving many of the problems they face in their roles at schools.

A full investigation of the existing product and a full feature audit were conducted in preparation for establishing what would be included in the new portal and where there were additional gaps myself and the product team could identify ourselves.

Page 11: Mark Trischuk · • Customer feedback • Usability studies • Audience analysis and personas Defining • Unearthing and crystallising the problems we are aiming to solve. Ideating

mt

Competitor Research

I spent several days reviewing Vivi’s internal competitor research, and expanded the search into more competing products, and investigations of similar existing products, their marketing materials, feature sets, product update and support communications, and more.

Together, with the Chief Technology Officer, we established the areas to focus on where we would extend the capabilities and product offering in the new administrative portal.

PAIN POINTS

MOTIVATION

• High school students• University students• Business or organisation employees• Age: Teenage, Twenties, maybe Thirties

• Diverse cross section of people otherwise

• Interfaces via the Internet via computers, tablets, phones, and watches• Asking for help from family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, fellow

students, prayers• Wikipedia

• Library

• To be engaged, to learn, to share their screen to show or be taught• To be accepted• To succeed at school or work• To succeed in finding happiness and fulfilment in life

• Understanding what is shared with them by the teacher or manager• Feeling comfortable requested screen share access and sharing their

work or thinking with the class or organisation

• To succeed socially• To succeed academically• To succeed professionally• To be happy and engaged, stimulated, lost pleasurably in the task at

hand

Five personas were created for the key user categories of Viewer, Presenter, Admin, IT Admin, Super IT Admin, and Staff. Below is the Viewer Persona:

Usability Testing

• I conducted usability testing of the complete Axure wireframe prototype on 4 testing subjects, who joined me in the Vivi boardroom.

• I drafted a script that covered many of the key user journeys. I tested users and recorded their perceptions when using the new admin portal, documenting their pain points and feedback.

• I compiled and organised my results and presented them to the Chief Technology Officer.

• I then incorporated the findings as changes to the wireframes.

This case study shows my product design process in practice.

The Life Story product was conceived to be a “Facebook for Life Stories”. Over 160 unique screens were designed.

Case Study: Life Story Product I handled all research, product, UX/UI, visual design, and testing for this project, from inception to launch, for two years from 2014-2016.

Research & Competitive Research

PRODUCT DESIGN PROCESS

• I received a brief of basic competitor research and internal research which had been conducted prior to my commencement on the project.

• I expanded the research from Canada into all directly competing products in the United States and Europe, and all similar products on the market.

• I compiled my results and presented them to the major stakeholders.

• I researched all major and minor social media and publishing products on the market, as the Life Story product would contain both publishing and social media elements.

• I completed a feature analysis of all competing products, evaluating any features for integration or expansion and concurrently brainstorming new features to add to our product.

PRODUCT DESIGN PROCESS

• Thanks to the success of this product, AdPerfect hired across product, sales, marketing, support, development, and content strategy.

• The product was sold as a white label service to newspaper publishers across the United States and aggregated over one million pageviews per month (2016).

• There are plans to launch the product as a stand-alone product under its own domain worldwide.

• The product continues to be successful. I left the company only because my wife and I moved to Australia when she took a permanent academic position at the University of Tasmania.

This case study shows my service design process in practice on a 2017-2018 project.

Dental 99 brings affordable dentistry to everyone. For a fixed fee of $99 for the most popular dental treatments, anyone can get the dental care at a network of dentistry offices. A team of four designers, we designed a consumer website, consumer platform, dental

Case Study: Dental 99 kiosk (tablet), and dental practice tablet software the dentists use.

With the research and user journeys completed before I arrived, I contributed the interaction design for the entire project, and much of the visual design, including the branding of the company.

Branding & Identity

With a background in branding & identity design and graphic design I was asked to create a new logo for the Dental 99 project. This is the final logo.

I referenced the brand research and stakeholder interviews to conceive a logo that would competitively and suitably situate Dental 99 in the marketplace.
