“A Glimpse Of His Glory”

Mark 9:1-13

Larry Cline – Hardin Valley Church Of Christ – 3/29/2015

16For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and

coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17For when He

received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by

the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased"-- 18and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when

we were with Him on the holy mountain. (II Peter 1:16-18)

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13

1And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”

1And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 2After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.

2After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-133His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

3His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6(He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6(He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 7Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

7Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 11And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

11And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 12Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?

12Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?

Mark 9:1-13Mark 9:1-13 13But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

13But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

The Question: “Who is Jesus?”

Peter’s answer, Peter answered and said to Him,

"You are the Christ." (Mark 8:29)

Right answer, wrong definition.

Mark shifts from the fact, to the meaning of Jesus being Messiah.

And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be

killed, and after three days rise again. (Mark 8:31)

The disciples struggle with Jesus going to the cross

The disciples struggle with Jesus going to the cross – Rightfully so!

34And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone

wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it.”

(Mark 8:34-35)

Very difficult practical application for Mark’s readers.

The question moves to

“Is Jesus worth dying for?”

"For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him

when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

(Mark 8:38)

People asked to carry a cross for Him need to remember that…

To help them He says, And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some

of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it

has come with power.” (Mark 9:1)

Kingdom = church (visible manifestation of the Kingdom of God on earth) + more!

Acts 14:22

II Peter 1:10-11

I Corinthians 15:50

The eternal glorious Kingdom of God is made for

more than these cocoons we are currently in.

The transfiguration is a preview of the glory of the Kingdom of God

that awaits all of us who are faithful even to death.

It’s a preview of how He will appear!

AGAIN: Is Jesus worth dying for? Take up your cross.

It won’t end in disaster. Even if it ends in death,

It will end in eternal glory!

Transfigured… His true essence and

being is revealed.

Remember Moses (Exodus 34) Jesus’ prayer (John 17)

2 Post Resurrection Appearances Paul sees Him on the Damascus Rd. John sees Jesus (Rev. 1:14-16)

Jesus did not change His glory on top of the mountain, He changed His nature down in the manger. He didn’t have to die to taste

glory, He had to die so we could.

Moses & Elijah talking with Jesus about the cross.

The law & prophets affirming the fact He must suffer.

VOICEJesus is EVERYTHING!

Listen to Him.

It’s no coincidence that the clearest image in the whole gospel of Mark

of the majesty of Jesus is bracketed by 2 very clear statements

that He must suffer. The path to glory always begins

as the way of the cross. We get so caught up in the problems

of now that we forget what is to be.

What would a glimpse of glory do for us?

1. Clarify who we listen to. Church has only one supreme teacher!

2. Clarify where disciples belong. Jesus came down from the

mountaintop to meet needs.

3. Reflects what disciples become. II Corinthians 3:18

Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know

that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see

Him just as He is. (I John 3:2)

You don’t get a cross without a crown.

Everywhere there is a cross, there is a crown.

When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

(Colossians 3:4)
