  • Congratulations to Sylvie Pease (Performing Arts Leader), who is one of 42 students from across NZ selected to take part in the SGCNZ National School Shakespeare Production during the October Holidays. This prestigious week-long intensive course in Wellington involves studying aspects of Shakespeare’s works and three of his plays under the direction of leading directors. What an exciting opportunity! We are very proud of you Sylvie.

Congratulations to Amie Kaufman, Year 13. Amie won the Alex Mao Photography Award as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography. The judges commended her photograph ‘Trying To Grow Up’ for its technical and artistic excellence!

Shadowtech ReviewOn Friday 7th June, Year 11 Digital Technology attended Shadowtech, an event which guides young women to understand the use of technology in all industries. It is co-ordinated by TechWomen, a group of passionate New Zealand tech, digital and ICT focused individuals from leading organisations that work together, with the support of NZTech, to help address one of the major challenges for the successful growth of technology in New Zealand – a shortage of women in tech roles.

We saw companies such as Microsoft, FaceMe, Xero, SMX, Harmoney, Auckland Defence Force, Orion Health and experienced an educational day. We were informed about the variety of jobs in the digital technology industry. We learnt about skills and techniques which would be helpful for any job. They provided us with lunch and there were many inspiring presentations that gave us a different perspective of women in the tech industry. Overall it was a very enjoyable day.

Caritas ChallengeOn June 7th, a group of girls participated in the Caritas Challenge. The challenge is an annual event held by other schools across the country. It promotes solidarity with those living in poverty and injustice, this year’s focus was on South Sudan. The girls took part in two aspects of the challenge - Move it and Stop it. Move it involved an amazing race scenario that integrated current social issues in South Sudan. Stop it involved a dinner comprised of plain rice. The Caritas Challenge was a way of raising awareness to the situation in South Sudan. This enabled the girls to show love in action through participating!

Auckland Schools' DebatingThis week marked an end to the 2019 debating season. Marist had five teams competing across three grades. Debating has been a wonderful opportunity for our students to develop their ability to think critically about our society. I’d like to thank our team managers Mr McIlwrick and Ms Masters for supporting our teams. Well done to all our debaters for their enthusiastic participation this season!

Two awards for Marist Stella Choir2019 has been a big year for the Marist Stella choir so far. After taking a break in 2018, the choir practised up to two hours every week after school, in preparation for the Big Sing Regionals on Friday 11th June.

This year there were 73 choirs participating in this highly prestigious competition and our hard work certainly paid off. We performed three songs in the required categories – New Zealand/Pasifika, Classical and Other Styles Category: Weep No More by David Childs, Sanctus and Benedictus from the Little Jazz Mass, and the Bulgarian folk song Dilmano Dilbero, which we also performed at the Gala concert.

We were delighted to win the Best Performance in the Other Styles category – a result of which we are very proud. For the first time ever, we were accompanied by a student, Veronica O’Donnell who won the Best Piano accompanist by a secondary school student. Well done, Veronica! Thank you especially to Mrs Karadjov for the many hours of rehearsing, organising and preparing that you put in. We don’t know what we would do without you!

  • S P O R T S U P D A T ESports ResultsWATER POLOMarist Intermediate v Mt Roskill Black - Year 7 & 8 had their closest game of the season. They came from behind to beat Mt Roskill Black 10:9. The girls had to fight all the way and scored with two seconds left on the clock to win by one goal. Goal scorers were Ashley Edwards (6), Lucy Doran (3) and Melita Simpson (1). The girls played an awesome game as a team, supporting each other the whole way in a real nail biter of a match.

HOCKEYMarist 1st XI v Howick 1XI - In our first game in the Open A/B grade, we started off really well with lots of energy. The half time the score was 0:2 to Howick, but Howick showed their experience at this level and outplayed our girls. The final score was 0:8 but our girls didn’t give up and continued to play as a team. Thank you to Emily Rednall for playing for us this week - it was great to see that you weren’t intimidated by the older more experienced players. Player of the day was awarded to Milla for her strong work in defence.

Marist U15 v MAGS Gold - Marist U15s beat MAGS Gold 8:0. Our goalie Rose had her first touch of the ball all season. Players of the day were Anoushka and Freya for their part in that solid defence and keeping their score nil. Last week's result was a 5:0 win over Baradene. This game had fantastic attacking play, including a great goal in which the ball was passed between all the strikers in the circle before scoring! All the strikers (Emily, Bella,Tash, Xanthe) received players of the day for that game. Next week: top of the table clash with Mt Roskill Grammar.

Marist Gold v Waitakere Wolverines - The girls scrambled hard on defence and the goalie made some excellent saves through this game. End result 1:1. PoD to the hard working goalie Brielle. Great to see the girls improving so much in such a short time.

Marist Blue v Western Waves - A tough game was fought all the way to the end. Well done to Elisabeth who scored the teams only goal in the last few seconds of the game and was our player of the day.

NETBALLSenior Social v Baradene: Snr Social Jewels - The wind whooshed and attempted to sweep us off our feet. It battered the ball, ripped the bibs off our opponents and stung our eyes, reducing visibility. Marist Spirit subverted the weather. After four gruelling quarters of play, the senior social netball team rose victorious over the adverse conditions and the opposing Baradene team to secure a 24:8 win. For such a windy morning our whole team performed very well, especially our shooters! PoD Nicola Verschuur. A first win for this Marist team! Thank you to all the parents that braved the wintery conditions to support our girls.

9B v One Tree Hill Y9 Pearls - A good performance, winning the first game of the season 31:3. Despite the windy and wet conditions, our shooters made opportunity with every possession they had and our defenders did really well to keep them out of the shooting circle.

Year 7 Blue v Glendowie Primary: Y7 Flaming Flamingos - These girls are improving week on week, passing short and straight proved to be a winning tactic and they came away with the win 18:15.

Year 7 Red v St Thomas's: Y7 Gold Stars - A really good game this week, they played hard and worked great as a team. The score was 11:8 to St Thomas'. However, the effort they put into the game was amazing. They played in different positions today and the coaches are so proud of how well they all played.

Year 7 Navy v St Cuthbert's: Y7/4 - A fantastic win over St Cuthbert’s 19:1. Wow! All their hard work is really paying off, with fantastic passing, great defence and superb shooting skills on display. Great teamwork!

Year 8 Gold v St Mary's: Y8 B - The girls came out looking sharp from the first whistle, which set us up for a fantastic lead and win over St Mary’s 40:18. Their netball skills are really coming along.

Year 8 Red v ACG Strathallan: Y7/8 Stars - Wow, what a game. We played hard right to the end. A close game where only lost by two despite having only six players on court for most of the game. Well done girls for always doing your best to the end.

FOOTBALLMarist Junior v Mt Albert - Fabulous team effort on both defence and attack. During the last minutes of the game Marist scored, winning the match 1:0.

Marist Premier v Mt Albert - A very intense atmosphere, fuelled by the amazing support from the sidelines. This led to a very tight game ending in a 2:2 draw. Our girls showed passion and drive to perform our absolute best, not only for ourselves and the team but also for Marist. This will help gear us up for next week’s game against Rangitoto.

Marist Intermediate Gold v St Mary’s College Red - A challenging game with a very even contest. Our team had some good shots on goal, saved by their goalies having an awesome game. Overall a fair draw at 0:0. Player of the day went to Cadey for her strong saves with multiple shots on goal. Well done team.

Marist Intermediate Blue v Diocesan Blue - Well done team with a 3:1 victory. Great goals to Brooke, Kara and an awesome flick goal by Sylvie from a Kara corner. Due to her non-stop defensive efforts the player of the day was Izzy Broderick.

LACROSSEMarist v Mt Albert Gold - MAGS were a fast, strong opponent, but Marist played well and kept up. Overall a good game. Marist won 13:4 and the player of the day went to Emily Turner. Great game girls.
