Part 2: Considerations for applicants
A non-academic fellowship?
An optional secondment?
Multidisciplinary research?
Common mistakes?
Policy objectives of IF: expected impact of a) projects and b) the programme
Secondments
Include a secondment only if it significantly increases the impact of your proposal
The choice therefore depends on the nature of your research
In IF 2014, one-third of submitted proposals included secondments, and one-third of main list proposals included secondments
Example: Designing Next-Generation Aircraft via High-Fidelity Computational Models (NextGen Airliners)
European Fellow at INSTITUT SUPERIEUR DE L'AERONAUTIQUE ET DE L'ESPACE (France) has a secondment at Airbus
"The proposed research is expected to make a lasting impact at Airbus"
Multidisciplinarity
IF 2016, award criterion Excellence: "Quality and credibility of the research/innovation project; level of novelty, appropriate consideration of inter/multidisciplinary and gender aspects"
In EF 2015, one-third of submitted proposals were multidisciplinary, and one-third of main list proposals were multidisciplinary
Panels with highest share of multidisciplinary proposals on main list (EF 2015): ENG (50%), ENV, (40%), PHY (40%)
European Research Council grants: 42% are multidisciplinary
Nature (September 2015): more than one-third of the references in scientific papers now point to other disciplines
Expected impact of IF projects
Horizon 2020 Work Programmehttp://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2016_2017/main/h2020-wp1617-msca_en.pdf
Page 13: At researcher level, increased: research and other skills,
career prospects, research/innovation output, contribution to society
At organisation level, stronger: networks, transfer of knowledge, R&I capacity
At system level: more researcher mobility, more well-trained and entrepreneurial researchers, results better communicated to society, increased attractiveness of Europe, improve the quality of research and innovation
Expected impact of the IF action overall
IF in the Horizon 2020 regulation:http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/legal_basis/fp/h2020-eu-establact_en.pdf
Nurturing excellence by means of mobility
Enhance creative and innovative potential
Opening attractive career opportunities
Enhance the innovativeness of the private sector
European Research Area (ERA) Roadmap 2015-2020:http://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/ST-1208-2015-INIT/en/pdf
ERA priority 3 - an open labour market for researchers:
"Improving inter-sectoral mobility between public and private sector research bodies in both directions and at all
career stages"
