Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

This has been another busy week at the College with Year 12 Parent/Student/Teacher meetings, Science Expo, excursions for real world applications to learning, guest presenters (outside experts) running workshops for students, Year 11 exams, musical rehearsals and representative sport. Just a normal week really, but it highlights the “busyness” of students and staff in a thriving learning environment!

Developing a positive school culture means that all elements of a catholic learning community as expressed in it’s Vision and Mission should be lived out as often as possible. In essence Marian Catholic College should be an expression of the best a human can be. Pope Paul VI once said, “Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying! Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day! Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do. Do it now! There are only so many tomorrows!” Now, I would never be one to question a pope, but might I be as bold to suggest that whatever you do should be life giving and to the betterment of self and others...being the best expression of yourself is living life to the full.

When Marian Catholic College and all of us who are connected to it are doing this, we are living our motto, “The Way, The Truth, The Life”. A worthy quest I am sure you agree!

Marian Feast Day

We extend an invitation to family and friends to attend our Marian Feast Day Mass on Tuesday 24th May at 10am followed by outside activities for students. Students are able to wear their sports

uniform on this day.

Science Expo was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievement of Science students

this year so far.

On display there were a range of different projects from written scientific reports to posters

and models of scientific concepts.

The students should be congratulated for the

amount of effort that went in to each and every

project.

PASTORAL CARE NEWS

Donations continue to be received for our “I

CARE KITS” Thank you for the support and

enthusiasm regarding this activity.

COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM members will

continue to collect donations each morning from homerooms until

Friday27th. The following week we will assemble the kits and

looks forward to presenting the kits to the local community

services for distribution as needed.

Each Monday & Tuesday we are continuing our “KNITTING FOR

CHARITY” activity and are well on target for completing the

required amount of squares (56) for our 2 blankets. We will

continue knitting scarves etc after we have completed our blankets

and this will provide an

opportunity for students

to be more creative and

develop their newly

found talent and skill.

This activity would not

be possible without the support of several MCC staff and community

members including members of the “GRIFFITH NATTY KNITTERS” who

have acted as mentors and as many of us were novices have

enthusiastically encouraged and patiently taught us the timeless art of

knitting. Thank you

Now that the cooler weather has arrived we can appreciate the warmth of jumpers, coats, scarves etc. I am happy to

receive uniforms that are no longer required by your family or child to distribute to those within our MCC

community who would appreciate and benefit from the donation.

I have also become aware of a support program A Start in Life which is an Australia charity providing support to

young Australians attending school and currently experiencing financial distress or hardship. Based on the

identified needs of the student assistance may include (but is not limited to):

School fees School photos

Books and stationery Medical treatment

School uniforms School camps and excursions

Regulation school shoes Computer technology

Extra and co-curricular activities After-school tuition

Year 12 VET Business Services students Ebony Favero and Christina Franco working hard to gain competency towards their Cert II in Business in their specially designed mock workplaces.

BISSA Cross Country

On Wednesday 18th May, Marian Catholic College held the BISSA Cross Country at Lake Wyangan. The Border Independent Schools Sports Association (BISSA) includes all 12 Catholic and

Independent Schools in the Riverina region.

I would like to congratulate all Year 12, Year 10 PASS and year 9 PASS students for their assistance on the day. Staff from other schools were impressed with their responsible behavior and diligence on the day and they contributed to

making it a very successful carnival.

Marian enjoyed some excellent results in the respective races at an

extremely competitive carnival.

CCC selection is granted to those students who achieved a top 6 placing out of the five Wagga Wagga Diocese Colleges. Marian is pleased to announce a number of students who have made this selection.

CCC Cross Country is held at Eastern Creek Raceway on Friday 17 th June.

On Wednesday 10 girls from the Year 9 Child Studies class had an insight into the running of the Maternity Ward at Griffith Base Hospital. They were given a tour of the ward, unfortunately this time were unable to go into the Labour Ward as a Mother was about to give birth.

Kyla Brooks (midwife) made the girls participate in 2 activities that tried to reflect the pain and intensity of a contraction as well as coping methods (relaxation) for pain during labour. They were also lucky enough to be able to ask a new mother and father of their experience of labour and becoming parents for the first time, little Oscar was just gorgeous. The Pregnancy Care Clinic was the last stop of the tour. The rest of the girls from the class will be attending the Ward next Wednesday.

In the next couple of weeks the girls will be spending a day at both Dorothy Waide Early Learning Centre and Goodstart Collina to experience the life of a Childcarer

JUSTICE MATTERS CAMP

Wednesday the 11th May, 13 students embarked on a journey, with Miss Nadine Scarfone, to Warrambui to take part in a Justice Matters Camp convened by the Catholic Schools Office, and

involving all 5 of the Catholic Colleges. The three days rushed by, with sessions about Aboriginal Spirituality being the focus, ‘Song lines –The living narrative of our nation’. Uncle Graeme Mundine led the sessions with the help of Aunty Mary from the CSO. He took us on the journey of his family and the obstacles he and his friends and family had to endure. He taught us about the relationships

to Land and Country, his ‘journey into justice’ and the three Rs ‘Remember Recognise & Rectify’.

Graeme’s stories inspired us to delve deeper into our own story. Where we come from? How we got

to where we are? & why we are here?

We were inspired by Luke from Caritas Australia to put our learning from this week into an action, this was extended from Graeme as he wanted us to recognise social justice as a call to action rather than just fundraising. Luke motivated us to take something back to school and be proud of. The students

on their return to school have many ideas an initiatives they want to put place.

The students involved were Sophie Baker, Aislinn Gesuale, Beatrice Gesuale, Douglas Harvie,

Angus Kennedy, Georgia McGregor, Kate Minato, Claire Murray, Abishek Sandhu, Dahnea Sleiman,

Eloise Star, Zarah Sully, Bianca Zilliotto.

MATHEMATICS

IS TERRIFIC

Students in year 7 and year 8 have received a login for www.matific.com

This is a trial that will give the students the opportunity to engage in some interactive activities to help build the concepts related to fractions, decimals and percentages in Year 7 and

Measurement in Year 8.

I will alternate the activities each week to take full advantage of the trial environment.

The trial will last until 26th May, so we are urging students to have a go at home by doing 20

minutes to half an hour on the activities.

We would also love to hear parent and student feedback if it is an enjoyable and valuable

experience.

Friends – Higher Help

Griffith is celebrating it’s Centenary this year in August.

Our Marian Catholic College library is looking to promote the 100 years of Griffith by putting

on a display of memorabilia from the days gone by from our school. If anyone has any old

memorabilia from St Brendan’s College or early Catholic High School days could they please drop

them off to the front office or library. All items will be returned to their owner, or they can

donated to the school to be kept in the archives.

Items such as old school uniforms, navy tunics, grey St Brendan jumpers/trousers,

hats, gloves, ties, berets, sport clothes, school satchels, globite school bags, old

textbooks, photos from 1950’s to 1970’s, school books etc.

COLLEGE TUITION FEES

Your College tuition fee account payment for Term 1 should have already been received by the College. If this has not been attended to, we would appreciate your attention to the

arrears.

Each terms’ fees must be paid by term end, hence this will ensure the account reverts to a

nil balance in order to begin each new school year.

We offer a discount to families with 2 or more children at Marian Catholic College, being 10% off Tuition Fee only for the 2nd child, 50% off Tuition Fee only for the 3rd child and 100% off Tuition Fee only for the 4th child. The family discount will apply only when your account is

in order & will be applied during 4th term.

We will be contacting families who have overdue accounts to follow up on arrears payments. Should you experience difficulty managing your account, there are a number of flexible payment options available to suit families’ budgets which we are happy to discuss with you.

The CSO Soccer squad ventured to Valentine Park in Sydney to participate in the CCC Tournament. The teams

competed against the other Catholic Dioceses in NSW, both teams went down in narrow losses which

unfortunately put them out of finals contention.

Majority of both teams were made up of Marian students which is

a testament to their ability.

Coaches were Rocky Marando, Jamie Gibbs & Nadine Scarfone.
