Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

Asking God for wisdom when making a decision is a tradition that dates back more than 3,000 years. The Bible documents

how Solomon became wise in 2nd Chronicles 1:7, which says, “That night God appeared to Solomon. God said, "What do you

want from me? Ask."

Solomon was a young man, possibly in his early 20s, when God asked him this question. Yet he didn’t ask for the things that

most young men would seek. He said, “Yes, give me wisdom and knowledge as I come and go among this people — for who

on his own is capable of leading these, your glorious people?"

(2nd Chronicles 1:10)

This Sunday is the Feast of Australia’s Saint, Mary MacKillop-St Mary of the Cross. One of the most used, motivating and well

known sayings of hers is ‘never see a need without doing something about it’. It is a modus operandi worth adopting for the

good of all our community.

Mary MacKillop was born in 1842 in (Fitzroy) Melbourne (Australia). On 8 August 1909.she died, having suffered a disabling stroke in 1902. Inspired by a meeting with Fr. Julian Tenison-Woods, Mary MacKillop at the age of 25, took her vows and the religious name, “Mary of the Cross”. In doing so, she founded the congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Soon after taking her religious vows, Mary MacKillop began establishing schools. Within 5 years of taking her vows and founding the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, over 30 schools had opened in South Australia and over 100 women had joined the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

Congregational Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph, Sr Anne Derwin rsj once said,” Mary MacKillop lived her life with an unwavering sense of gratitude and confidence that God would always provide. She spoke over and over of ‘our good God’ and she lived with grateful receptivity of God’s love and all that God’s love asked of her in life. She truly imitated the Christ to whom she had committed her life.”

Ellen Baird and Fapiola Uoifalelahi have been awarded an Australian Vocational Student Prize for 2014.

The Australian Vocational Student Prize recognises the achievements of students who completed their senior secondary studies while undertaking vocational education and training while at school, or an Australian School-based Apprenticeship. Winners of the Australian Vocational Student Prize will receive a certificate and $1000. An award will be presented to these students at the next College assembly.

For those who have already submitted notes this is just to inform you of the change of date.

This week marks “National Homelessness Prevention

Week” and as an acknowledgement the “Community Action

Team” are launching their term 3 activity to raise much

needed food supplies for our local St Vincent DePaul Society

to be distributed to those in need.

Housing is a human right however on any given night in

Australia 105,000 people; including men, women or children

are homeless. This includes people within our local

community.

The “Community Action Team” is asking for all members of

our Marian Catholic College community to

SHARE WHAT YOU CAN and donate a tin of food.

As a school community we have the potential to be able to provide 650 meals to those in need.

This small act of kindness has a ripple effect within the community and can make a significant

difference in a person’s life.

Year 10 committee members are also working on entries in a variety of formats to be submitted in

a competition as part of the MERCY FOUNDATION YOUTH AWARDS. I look forward to

seeing their entries and hope we have the opportunity to showcase their work. The students will

focus on demystifying and busting the myths regarding

homelessness.

There are many reasons why someone could find themselves

homeless and for many it is a result of a culmination of

negative experiences and factors that they have no control

over. Unfortunately when we think of homelessness

however we often think of a stereotype person sleeping

rough on the streets due to substance abuse.

Factors such as domestic and family violence, natural

disasters, long-term unemployment, chronic shortage of

affordable and available rental housing, the breakdown of

the family unit as well as undiagnosed or poorly managed

mental health care can play a huge part in explaining how someone may find themselves homeless.

The “Community Action Team” recognises the significant work that local welfare services provide

and are happy to support them. We ask that you join us and show your support by donating and

On Tuesday 4

th August, the MCC Year 7 & 8 Boys Netball team travelled to Wagga Wagga to compete in the

NSW Netball Schools Cup. They had previously won the Local Gala Day which allowed them to progress to this level.

The boys came up against Young High School in the first round, after overcoming nerves they won 12-3. Round 2 saw them play Tumbarumba against whom they played extremely well winning convincingly 19-1. The last game of the round put them up against Gundagai High School. This was a close game which put a lot of pressure on all the boys. They won 13-11, this then placed them on top of the ladder of the round games.

The semi final was played against Tumbarumba which MCC won 13-2. This allowed them to progress to the grand final against Young. The grand final was hotly contested and was a nail biting game. At half time the boys were trailing by 2 goals, after a pep talk and overcoming their nerves the boys went out in the 2

nd half and played like champions. We were trailing

by 1 goal for most of the 2nd

half and then it was equal in the last 2 minutes. The boys teamwork and determination shone through and saw them win by 1 goal when the hooter went. There was much jubilation and cheering when they had realized they had won the Tournament. The boys were presented with a shield which will now take pride of place in the school foyer. They have been crowned NSW Netball Schools Cup Riverina Champions 2015. Winning this title has allowed them to progress to the state titles which will be held at Homebush (where the netball World Cup is being held) in Sydney on the 15

th September.

We are hoping to do some fundraising to help the boys achieve greatness and enjoy the experience of a lifetime. Any help and support would be greatly appreciated.

A BIG congratulations to the following boys on a fantastic achievement; our defenders Matthew Parisotto, Thomas Royal and Ioane Saula, centre court players Joseph Schmizzi, Bahri Kocak and Thomas Baker and the sharp shooters Mitch Salvestro, Isaac Testoni and Connor Bock (captain). Unfortunately Liam Townsend was unable to attend the day but has been an integral part of the team.

A big thank you to Lea Salvestro for her support on the day and the yummy cupcakes that gave the boys energy.

The boys were a pleasure to coach and a credit to MCC, we are all very proud of them.

2015 MATHS CHALLENGE RESULTS

The College started this year’s Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians on the first 3 weeks of Term 2. This is a problem-solving activity organized by the Australian Mathematics Trust which is aimed at the top 15% of students in their year level.

Students received a problem booklet containing 6 problems. They were required to present written solutions to as many of these problems as they can. The problems were challenging and required time and persistence but were based on Mathematics which should be known at that level. Students work with a partner on all the 6 problems.

I congratulate the following students on their efforts in attempting the Maths Challenge Stage problems. The fact that they participated indicates a desire to achieve. The problems were meant to be challenging, and for students to achieve and have a feeling of enjoyment and success, they needed to be committed.

It is not just about completely solving the problems; it is a matter of participating to the best of one’s ability and learning in the process.

Correction to last weeks edition of the Newsletter Mrs Dumbleton organised the Maths Challenge in the Hall for each year level. Students enjoyed 40 puzzles which they solved as a group and decided on how to score the most points. The Winners are listed below:

JUNIOR BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION GIRLS are invited to play in the 11 years and under, 13 years and under and we would love to get the 15 years and under competition up and running again. (the fees payable include the door fee, playing singlet to use and referees). Competition will commence on the 13th of this month so any interested players are welcome to come down and play.

Wow! What a whirlwind few weeks it has been for Year 12 2015!

It started on Monday Week 3, when the Society and Culture class completed their PIP for HSC Marking. The following day saw the beginning of the HSC Trial Exams with the students sitting English Paper 1. The subsequent ten days have seen a mixture of sore hands, worried faces and relief as the exams come to a close.

The final exam, IPT, will take place on Monday at 9:00am. After this exam IPT students will return to classes to complete the day.

All other Year 12 Students return to school at 8:45am on Monday 10th

August for regular classes.

The next five weeks is a crucial time in all HSC Courses. As a HSC Teacher and Pastoral Coordinator I cannot stress the importance of students being present at School the entire final six weeks. During this period, teachers will be finishing their courses, revising course content, going through the Trial Exam, guiding students through past papers and exemplar responses and leading the students in marking and writing seminars. As mentioned it is vital students are in class at every opportunity and bring a focused and enthusiastic attitude to each lesson. Over the past few years, part of Marian Catholic College’s outstanding HSC results have been built on the foundation of learning occurring over the next six weeks.

In addition to this, on Tuesday 11 August we will be holding our final HSC Support Evening.

This evening is an opportunity to prepare both students and parents for the challenges ahead in the HSC exams.

The night will begin at 7pm in the College Drama Room.

The focus for the evening will be:

Information from Marie’s Photographics regarding the Graduation

Board of Studies HSC rules and procedures;

Tips for surviving the HSC and best preparation over the coming months;

Information on tertiary requirements, early entry and students will have the chance to look through the

2016 UAC books.

These evenings have proven to be invaluable to both students and parents in setting our students up for success in the HSC. We look forward to seeing you.

I also wish to mention some of the other key dates in the coming weeks. This Monday 10th

August the Year 12 Drama Class will be presenting their Trial HSC Performances in the Drama Room. Two nights later on the Wednesday Mr Segrave’s Music Class will also be performing their Trial pieces in the Drama Room. Please come along and support the fellow members of our Year Group Team.

Lastly, please keep the students studying Italian Continuers through Open High School in your thoughts as on Tuesday their sit their actual HSC Oral Exam.

TAFE NSW Riverina Institute in conjunction with National Skills Week are

holding parent and student information sessions at three campus locations

TVET Information sessions will be held from 5pm to 7pm:

• Tuesday August 25 Albury Campus

• Wednesday August 26 Wagga Wagga Campus

• Thursday August 27 Griffith Campus

The sessions will provide opportunities for parents and students to speak directly with teaching

staff of TVET courses and will be held in the Library at each campus.
