Hail Mary, full of grace.

Our Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women,

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,

Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Dear Parents and Carers,

A Hail Mary is the most appropriate prayer for us to pray as a community this week as

our marble statue of Mary has been proudly placed in the centre of our College. The

forward to the Blessing of our statue next week when the College Community

celebrates the Marian Feast Day next Friday. I would like to invite all parents and

interested community members to attend the Blessing and our Mass to be celebrated at

12.30pm next Friday 22nd of May in the College Hall.

Our new Vision and Mission statement is also going to be launched at our Marian Day

celebrations next Friday. The development of our Vision and Mission has been a

collaborative and rewarding process for all involved. We are very proud of the final

product and believe that it is a true representation of what the Marian staff, parents

and students want for the students, and themselves, and believe will contribute to a

holistic education that prepares our students for life. I would like to thank Lucia Dickie

for volunteering her talents and designing a spectacular banner on which to share our

Vision and Mission with the community.

This week was another very busy week in the College. Year 7 and 9 students should be

Learning and Teaching News

As part of our wide range of post school options Marian hosted an information night of Year 12 students and their parents. This was presented by Patrick O’Connor from the University of Wollongong and was an opportunity to learn about programs such as Early Admission, Bonus Points and Scholarships, not just for Wollongong, but all universities. The event was well received and hopefully laid to rest some stress about enrolling at university.

On a busy night for our Year 12 students, our parent, teacher and student conferences were held. By all accounts they were very informative and provided excellent feedback for parents on student learning and achievement.

Having trusting, clear and open communication lines between parents and teachers provides a fertile and supportive environment in which students can strive, thrive and flourish. We all need feedback on how we are travelling in order to make necessary adjustments in our lives and our students are no different.

To build students’ self-awareness and ownership of their attitudes and learning, I encourage students to do a self-analysis of the feedback they received on the examination papers and in the PTS conferences. The focus should be on reflecting on their goals and specific recommendations provided.

When a “Teamwork” approach is fostered at home and at school, students tend to see advice more as a positive and adopt said advice.

Careers News Year 12 students and their parents were fortunate to have the opportunity to attend an information session on Thursday evening with Patrick O'Connor from the University of Wollongong .He talked about the advantages of attending a regional university like UOW, which is ranked in the top 2% in the world for accommodation and courses. As well, he explained the ATAR, applying to UAC, Early Entry and alternative pathways. At the conclusion of the presentation, the College Captains thanked him for coming to our school and making an interesting and informative presentation. It was well attended and students were able to ask questions afterwards. There are course guides available at the Careers office and for those parents and students who are interested, you can sign up for a newsletter which will contain information and important dates, do this by going to: http://www.uow.edu.au/future/school/advise/whyuni/index.html Betsy Farrugia Careers Advisor

Congratulations go to Elena Turunen of Year 11 for taking out the

title of Griffith Young Musician of the Year award 2015. Elena has

competed twice at this prestigious event and wowed the judges

this year with her performance of Malagena on the piano. She

performed this piece at the Finalists concert in the Burley Griffin

room at the Regional Theatre. Each competitor had to submit a 7

minute recording of themselves playing an instrument or singing

and a summary of their musical achievements in 2014. Elena had

many achievements in 2014 including winning the People's Choice

award in the Nancy Blumer Competition. We had a number of

students, past and present from Marian Catholic College who

made it through the first round of judging and performed with

Elena at the Regional Theatre. Congratulations also goes to

Emma Zanotto, Mason Graham and Lara Camm for reaching the finals.

THE MATHEMATICS CLASSROOM

Year 9 Stage 5.1 have been studying Algebra. They are doing a take home task that asks them to use their creativity and develop their ICT skills to create a jigsaw puzzle. The puzzle will need the students to make their own algebraic questions and provide answers so that the puzzle can be completed by others. During class, students were shown what was expected. They made a jigsaw puzzle which they prepared for a fellow student to do.

Students enjoyed the activity. The background uses the watermark that Word places and scales onto the page. Students can find their own background and have been assisted with a tessellation website, http://www.mcescher.com/gallery/. Their own work of mathematical art is due in on 22

nd May, when they will also

complete a skills test.

HOSPITALITY EXCURSION

Fourteen Hospitality students travelled to Sydney last week, along with Griffith High School and Barellan Central

School students, to experience the Hospitality Industry first hand in a city environment. First stop was the historic

Hydro Majestic Hotel in the Blue Mountains, where the students had a tour through the various areas of the hotel

and gained valuable insight into the levels of facilities and services available. Wednesday evening was filled with

laughter as students enjoyed a meal at a Tapenyaki restaurant and honed their coordination skills!! Having been

on the bus for many hours, a brisk walk through Darling Harbour, complete with ice cream in most cases, concluded

our big day.

On Thursday, we visited the Hyde Park Pullman Hotel. Hotel executive took us through the hotel, explaining the

various functional areas and the interrelationships between them. They also explained career and training options

in the industry and discussed some current trends and issues in the field. This information is valuable as students

use these industry examples in their HSC to add depth and meaning to their responses.

From there we headed to Ultimo TAFE for a tour of the training facilities offered and some insight into the scope of

courses available. A delicious two course lunch was enjoyed in “The Apprentice” restaurant, run by students at the

TAFE, then onto ANZ stadium for a tour of the commercial kitchens and a behind the scenes tour of the venue. On

an event night, the kitchen puts out 8,000 meals to the various satellite kitchens and function areas!!! The kitchen

was certainly something to see and our knowledge and understanding of food safety aspects has been enhanced.

Thursday night saw us eating at a small Greek restaurant where students experienced true Greek food and hospi-

tality. A walk back through the city saw everyone exhausted and ready for a good night’s sleep.

On Friday we visited the Blue Mountains Hotel Management School in Leura where students were shown the facili-

ties and training offered by the School. Lunch was served in the student run restaurant with amazing food and ser-

vice. After lunch, students participated in a Front Office lesson and learnt valuable skills in customer service and

reception procedures in a large hotel.

I would like to congratulate all students on their behaviour and their learning while on this trip. I know you have a

much better understanding of the Hospitality industry and some excellent industry examples to enrich your HSC

responses.

I wish to thank all Year 12 students and parents who attended the Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences and the HSC Support Night on Thursday.

Yet again we set record numbers of students and parents for this event. I know that both students and parents gained valuable feedback from the teachers as to how they can improve their results as they move towards the HSC. My thanks again to Mrs Betsy Farrugia for organizing our guest speaker Mr Patrick O’Connor. I hope parents and students also found this presentation informative. I also wish to thank all the teachers that were present, our Library staff, who aided in the set up, and in particular Acting Pastoral Director Mrs Lora Segrave who facilitated the evening and organised the set-up of for the night.

Earlier that day, on Thursday Morning I spoke to the Year 12 students to express my severe disappointment and the College’s concerns over students leaving the School grounds during class time or failing to attend their study periods. The students received a clear message that this is not acceptable. Students must remain in the Library during their study periods working quietly. The only exception is Thursday from 1pm, where students are able to sign out and leave the School Grounds. I ask all parents to support me in ensuring students attend school unless ill, and remain present for the entire day.

On a more positive note, thank you to those Year 12 Students and families who have supported our Paver Fundraiser. Please continue to spread the word amongst the community over the next few weeks. Forms are available from the College website or from the front office.

Marian ‘Feast’ Day Next Friday the 22nd May will be Marian 'Feast' Day. Year 12 will be selling Gourmet BBQ Beef

Marian Feast Day

This coming Friday 22nd May we will be celebrating the

Feast Day of our college with the Blessing of the Mary

Statue, our Marian Feast Day Mass and Launch of the

new college Vision and Mission Statement. The

proceedings will commence at 12:30pm and we warmly

invite parents and friends to attend if possible. Following

the proceedings students will have lunch with Year 12’s

fundraising with gourmet burgers.

Our Mass will be a celebration of the founders of our

college, namely, Marcellin Champagnat and Catherine

McAuley, along with Mary, Mother of Jesus, the

patroness of our college. Marcellin Champagnat is the

founder of the Marist Brothers who led the college until

their departure in 1991 and Catherine McAuley is the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy

who assisted with the Marist Brothers in leading the school until their departure in 2006. We are fortunate that a

representative of both movements will be present for our Feast Day next Friday. We look forward to an exciting day

next Friday and again welcome you to join us for this event!
