Marconi LH, ETSIEricsson’s cost effective high capacity microwave transmission system

Ericsson has over 40 years of microwave transmission experience, and has delivered microwave systems to more than 600 customers in over 150 countries. Marconi LH is produced in the world’s largest microwave production facility and has a market leading reliability. Ericsson is the market leader in microwave transmission.

Marconi LH is a trunk radio that provides cost effective wireless transmission of multiple STM-1 signals and Ethernet over medium and long distances in the trunk and metro area of SDH and packet networks. It offers rapid rollout of transmission capacity and with integrated network management Marconi LH is an economical alternative and complement to fiber transmission.

It is used e.g. for ring closure of metro and core rings, and for access to Point of presence. It is extra useful in situations with difficult terrain, lack of right of way and when a short implementation time is required. It is also often used as a back-up solution for a fiber connection.

The traditional application where Marconi LH can be found is within Telecom Networks where it is used in a variety of areas.

TV Broadcasting backhaul is another application where Marconi LH is successfully being used by our customers. Ericsson offers a complete solution for Digital Terrestrial TV distribution.

Marconi LH is also used in Communication Networks for control data, internal communications and video surveillance. Utility and media companies, as well as defence and transportation industries are the main users.

Marconi LH is a high performance radio link with long hop lengths due to high system gain and advanced diversity receiver. Typical hop lengths range from 5 –120 km; extreme hops with distances over 170 km are also in service.

All Long Haul frequency bands, from 4 to 13 GHz, are available. Ethernet is available via an Ericsson verified solution and a common management system.

Marconi LH’s best in class spectrum efficiency enables operators to transmit very high capacity in a small number of frequency channels. Up to 20 STM-1 can be sent over one antenna using only 10 frequency channels with CCDP (Co-Channel Dual Polarization).

Marconi LH has no restriction in channel arrangement; each immediate channel neighbor can be used. Marconi LH’s different modulation schemes with multilevel coding optimize the hop length for available frequency bandwidth and in combination with a highly linear transmitter minimize the pollution of adjacent channels. This results in optimal usage of the frequency space and a denser network.

Minimized investment and operating costs; Marconi LH has a very small footprint, up to ten STM-1 channels in a single 19-inch cabinet. The modular design supports an easy and gradual expansion of the system.

Marconi LH also boasts a best in class low power consumption; <80 W per STM-1. The small footprint, low power consumption and a low number of spare parts lead to minimized investment and operating costs. The high spectrum efficiency also reduces channel licensing costs.

The Market leading reliability is based upon Marconi LH’s highly robust system architecture, with no single point of failure. It offers multiple protection mechanisms such as N+1 for radio protection and MSP 1+1 for protection of the optical interfaces.

The high availability and performance is due to the very high degree of digitalization and integration. This also results in a field proven high MTBF.

The common management system for Ericsson’s microwave and optical transmission products reduces network downtime and eliminates unnecessary site visit.

End to end Service portfolioEricsson has extensive experience from around the world with planning, installation, commissioning and maintenance of trunk microwave networks.

Ericsson offers help with everything from planning to operation of the network, with an unmatched service portfolio for cost efficient deployment.

Marconi LH is ideal for any application where fiber is not an option due to technical or economical reasons

Marconi LH is the reliable and cost effective trunk solution within Ericsson’s trans-mission portfolio.

Compact 10-in-one system architectureAll active system components are housed indoors in 19-inch cabinets. Up to 10 STM-1 channels, including the protection switching function as well as redundant power feed, can be accommodated in a single rack. The system design is highly modular, simplifying installation, expansion and operation. Each system consists of three sub-functions:• RF branching• Transceiver unit (TRX)• Baseband unit (BBU)Only the RF branching and the Transceiver unit are frequency-dependent.

RF branchingChannel filters connecting the transceiver units to the antenna system permit low-attenuation combining of all RF channels of one polarization to one antenna.

Transceiver unit (TRX)The transceiver units have broadband capacity for a complete frequency band, with the corresponding RF channels being defined by a synthesized oscillator. The unit supports XPIC operation and has a built-in diversity receiver. This minimizes the number of different spare parts and supports a diversity of different configurations and duplex distances.

Baseband unitThe baseband unit performs all SDH processing and radio protection switching functions. It also provides optical or electrical baseband interfaces, as well as the interface for up to five transceiver units (STM-1 signals). Up to two Baseband Units can be mounted in one rack to support up to 10 Transceiver units. An optional 1+1 Multiplex Section Protection together with a full equipment protection is provided for the baseband interfaces.

Ethernet/TDM solutionEthernet interfaces (10/100/1000BASE-T), TDM interfaces (E1) as well as higher order SDH interfaces are provided by combining the radio system with the powerful Ericsson multi-service portfolio.Verified scaleable solutions using Marconi LH in combination with an OMS multiplexer are available– OMS 800 series for low capacities; OMS 1400 or OMS 1600 series for higher capacities. All OMS multiplexers perform a highly efficient cross-connection of Ethernet and/or TDM traffic. The OMS multiplexers and the Marconi LH radio system are supported by the same network management

system providing an integrated, easy and effective control.Optimum antenna systemsEricsson offers a full antenna range including the Ericsson unique shell antenna for a wide variety of applications. The range offers optimum dimensioning and design of the microwave transmission path.

ManagementLocal management is carried out via the Marconi LH Local Maintenance Terminal tool. Software can be downloaded locally or via the management interface. All the software, together with the configuration for a complete terminal is stored in an on-site memory card, allowing for plug-and-play functionality. The ServiceOn management family offers remote Element Management and Network Management of Marconi LH.
