Spring came to my mother’s little village. Flowers were in bloom, the grass smelled sweet and fresh. Fruits were ripe for the picking. There was much activity during Chag HaAviv;
the house had to be meticulously cleaned for Pesach; the wood stove cleaned of all chometz; the kneading board had to be replaced with a freshly cut piece of wood.
My mother remembered all this with much fondness as she told us about life on the farm in the spring before Pesach finally arrived. But truth be told, she said, this was not the only reason for her excitement and anticipation. No, for my mother it meant, new shoes! Her mother would travel to Prague and buy her family new spring clothes and shoes for the holiday. This year was my mother’s turn. Her year to get new shoes. She fantasized about how they would look, what color, what style. She hoped not the same utilitarian, ugly brown oxfords that she had worn through until the soles of the shoes were almost transparent. Their wear couldn’t be helped, of course, when she had to trudge through mud and dirt to feed the chickens, but at least for a while they would be new and she would try her hardest to keep them in mint condition.
The awaited day finally came. Her mother travelled to Prague the day before and was scheduled to return that afternoon. My mother tried to keep busy with all her chores, but every once in a while she would run to the door awaiting her mother’s return. And return she did with a new pair of suspenders for Simcha, a new yarmulke for her brother Pesach. Avrohom received the desperately needed new pants and for the older girls: a blouse for Sarah, some new stockings for Baila. My mother waited patiently until her mother’s gaze fell upon her beloved Chana, her dutiful daughter. Chanala, she said “I ran out of money and the shoes were so expensive, I just could not buy them. You’ll see we’ll polish yours up really nicely and I will crochet a new collar for your blouse. You will look like a princess, and next year, I promise, you will be the first on the list”. As my mother told this story it was clear that her pride far exceeded her disappointment. “Mama, she said, “next year Moshiach will be here and we shall all have as many shoes as we could possibly dream of.”
Last year, a few weeks before Pesach, I decided to do something that would be a z’chus for my mother’s neshoma. I contacted Rabbi Shaul Broner and asked him if he, as a representative of Matan B’seter, would distribute funds that I collected from family and friends to large families, so that their children would have new shoes for Pesach. I called this project the “ Y’SHOE-AH Foundation” in memory of Chana Bas Yosef. This year I’m starting much earlier. Anyone interested in being part of this project can call Shaul Broner at (248) 968-5646 and designate the funds that they wish to donate to go to large families for the purchase of new shoes for their children for Pesach.

“For a six-day period you shall eat matzos and on the seventh day shall be an
assembly to the L-rd, your G-d; you shall not perform any creative work.” (Deuteronomy/Devarim 16:8) This seventh day is the day that G-d split the Sea of Reeds (often mislabeled the Red Sea) for the Jews, and drowned the Egyptians who chased after them. After the Jews were saved, the Torah records the song they sang as thanks to and praise of G-d. This song is prominent in Jewish life; it is repeated in its entirety in our daily morning prayers.
The Midrash (Shemos Rabbah 23:4) states that prior to the splitting of the sea no one had sung to G-d as the Jews did in response to this miraculous salvation. Many commentators are troubled by this Midrash since we do have records of earlier songs, including Psalm 92, the psalm honoring the Shabbos day, which is attributed to Adam. What was so unique about the Song at the Sea that our Sages’ consider it the first? And why is there a continued emphasis on that song today?
Rabbi Gedaliah Schorr explains that this song excels because it is the first time that the depth and magnificence of the message draws on the full essence of the beauty of music. A song is comprised of many notes - some high, some low, some euphoric, some discordant. Each note on its own is nothing special. The beauty of song is bringing together all the individual notes and chords to create something magnificent. A song without the low notes would lack richness and beauty. Similarly, our own lives are replete with many experiences - high points and low points - that comprise the symphony of life. With our finite, human perspective we do not appreciate the reason for the low points and would prefer the song of life to be without them. All of the songs written
in praise of G-d prior to this one were expressions of gratitude for the evident blessings and high points in life.
With the Egyptians drowned in the sea and real freedom finally at hand, the Jews now appreciated there was a reason for the decades of suffering they had endured. The low points helped testify to the glory of G-d in the song of life; the song would be incomplete without them.
For the first time, a song praising G-d included praising Him for the events one may perceive to be bad. Thus, we continue to emphasize that song today. It constantly reminds us that whether we understand it or not, there is a purpose behind life’s challenges and in due time we will understand and appreciate the beauty of every aspect of our lives.

The Torah teaches us about sins and offerings. It tells us about how a human is supposed to
respond to misdeeds. It tells us about all types of people who make mistakes and sin. High Priests and princes as well as simple Jews are subject to failures and so, in addition to penitence, each sinner on every level must bring an offering.
When referring to the average sinner the Torah teaches the halacha by beginning the laws with the words, “If a man shall sin” or “when a man shall sin.” It uses the Hebrew word “im,” (Leviticus 4:27) or “ki” (Leviticus 5:21). However when it comes to “a prince amongst the tribes” who is the sinner, the Torah uses a different expression. It does not use the standard words for if and when, rather it uses a totally different expression “asher.”
“Asher nasi yecheta -- if that a prince sins, and commits one from among all the commandments of Hashem that may not be done -- unintentionally -- and becomes guilty” (Leviticus 4:22).
The word asher, is quite similar in fact to the word “ashre,” It means praiseworthy. That point is not lost on the Talmudic sages. Rashi quotes the Sifra, “If that a prince hath sinned: The word “Asher” is connected in meaning with “Ashrei” which means praiseworthy. The verse implies the following connotation: Praiseworthy and fortunate is the generation whose prince (king) takes care to bring an atonement sacrifice even for his inadvertent misdeeds.”
That is surely praiseworthy, especially to those of us who live in a generation pock-marked with scandals of denials and cover-ups. But if that is the case, why not use the term “asher” in reference to the bringing of his pertinence, not referring to the sin itself? Isn’t it the admission of guilt that merits praise, not the actual misdeed? There are many variations to this story. The basic premise, however, is well known.
In the city of B’nai Beraq there are many Bar Mitzvah celebrations every Shabbos. It became very difficult for Rav Yaakov Yisrael Kanievski, the elder sage known to world Jewry as the Steipler Gaon to attend every Bar Mitzvah. In fact, he was old and weak and hardly had the strength to go to shul. One week, a Bar Mitzvah boy was honored with the
maftir. Immediately after the davening, the Steipler Gaon was standing there in line, waiting to wish him Mazal Tov.
The Steipler Gaon bent down and began conversing in earnest with the neophyte member of the adult Jewish community. It seemed to the hushed crowd that this was much more than a perfunctory Mazel Tov wish.
The boy paled as he shook his head several times in amazement. “Of course, Rebbe!” he exclaimed. “Of course! There is no question. I feel terrible that the Rebbe felt he had to discuss this with me!”
The Steipler thanked the young boy, wished him Mazel Tov again, blessed him, and left the shul.
The entire congregation was shocked. What could the Steipler have wanted?
“Let me explain,” began the boy. “Six years ago I was davening in this shul with a very large siddur (prayer book). The Steipler approached me and chided me for learning Gemara in the middle of the Tefilah. I showed him that it was a Siddur and that I actually was davening. He apologized and left.
Today the Steipler came to my Bar Mitzvah and reminded me of the story. He explained to me that even though he apologized for his mistaken reprimand six years ago, it was not enough. Since, at the time, I was a child under Bar Mitzvah, I did not have the frame of mind to truly forgive him. Even if I did forgive him, it had no halachic validity. The Steipler found out when my birthday was and waited for six years until my Bar Mitzvah. Today, I am halachically old enough to forgive him, and so, he came back today to ask my forgiveness!”
Sometimes the praise of our leaders is not the fact that they bring a sin offering, but rather in the entire sin and absolution process. It is important for us to understand, not only that they ask forgiveness, but what they did wrong and how they rectified their misdeed. We are praiseworthy when we have leaders that understand what is considered wrong, and openly teach us through their actions how to respond. When the process is comprehensive, then the combination of the mistake and the absolution can be considered praiseworthy, for they are acts we can all learn from.

PESACH 2013: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSQuestion: When it comes to non-edible items such as toiletries, cosmetics and medications, which items must be chametz free and which items do not?Discussion: Some families have the tradition not to use on Pesach any item which may contain any chametz or chametz derivative. ose families should continue following their hallowed and praiseworthy tradition. e answer below is directed towards those families who do not have such a custom and are looking to follow the basic halachah: Medications: Coated tablets, avored medications, pleasant tasting cough syrups and all chewable medications need to be researched to see if they contain any chametz or chametz derivative. All other medications are permitted to be used regardless of the content. [Oral medications containing kitniyos should only be used for some who is ill, not someone who is merely suering from a minor discomfort. If you are unsure of your status, clarify it with a Rav.] Vitamins are generally not considered medications, and should not be used unless they are chametz-free. It goes without saying that no medications should be discontinued without prior consultation with a Rav and a doctor.Toiletries and Cosmetics: Deodorants, hair sprays, colognes, perfumes, shaving lotions and all items which contain denatured alcohol should be avoided. Toothpaste and mouthwash should not be used unless it is veried that they contain no chametz. All other products, such as soaps, shampoos, creams, powders, stick and gel deodorants, lotions, blush, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara and nail polish, may be used regardless of their content.Question: May I kosher my microwave for Pesach use?Discussion: It is not recommended that you do so. If you absolutely must use a microwave on Pesach, we suggest you buy a new one for Pesach and keep it for Pesach use for future years.Question: How do I kosher my countertops for Pesach?Discussion: ere are many dierent types of countertops available today, and how to kosher them would depend on which type of countertop you have: Group 1): Stone countertops (marble, limestone, granite, soapstone, slate, onyx) may be koshered by thoroughly cleaning them, waiting 24 hours and then pouring boiling water over them. Group 2) Glass, cement (Buddy Rhodes, Cheng Design), porcelain or ceramic countertops may not be koshered; they must be covered with a non-porous material which will not easily rip or tear. Group 3) Butcher block or wood surfaces countertops (John Boos, Spekva, Omega) may be koshered by the hot water method, but only if they contain no cracks that may have trapped chametz; otherwise they must be covered. Group 4) Countertops made out of synthetic materials or plastics (Formica, acrylic, Corian, Avonite) are debatable; some poskim permit them to be koshered via the hot water method provided they are not
scratched or stained and cleaned real well, while others maintain that these material may not be koshered and cannot be used unless they are covered.Question: What type of chicken or meat may I serve on Seder night?Discussion: When the Beis ha-Mikdash was standing, the only roasted meat permitted to be eaten on the Seder night was the meat of the Korban Pesach. Nowadays, although the Beis ha-Mikdash is no longer standing and we no longer eat the Korban Pesach, we still do not eat any roasted meat on the two Seder nights.“Meat” includes meat from any animal which requires shechitah (ritual slaughter), including chicken and turkey. Roasted sh, however, is permitted.“Roasted” includes any type of roasting, including pot roast. (Pot roast refers to meat or chicken which is roasted in a pot or pan in its own juice, without adding any water or other liquids.) Even if the item was cooked rst and then roasted it is forbidden. But if it was roasted and then cooked it is permitted according to most poskim. A minority opinion forbids that as well.Fried, barbecued, broiled over an open re or smoked meat is considered like roasted meat and is forbidden. Liver, which is broiled, is not eaten on the Seder night. Deep fried, however, is considered like cooked and is permitted. Some families do not eat roasted meat during the daytime Yom Tov meals either, but most people do not follow this custom nowadays.Based on the above, it is important to remember that at the Seder, it is forbidden to eat the roasted zeroa which is placed on the Seder Plate. But it is permitted to eat the zeroa during the daytime meal. In any case, the zeroa should not be discarded, as it is considered a bizyaon mitzvah to do so, and one should make sure that it is eaten at an appropriate time.

Right away, Yossi interrupts him. “Always with the Jewish jokes! Give it a rest! Why do your jokes always have to be about Jews? Just change the names to another ethnic group for once will you David!”
So David starts again, “Hashimoto and Suzuki were talking one day at their nephew’s Bar Mitzvah....”
