DeVry Literary Society Journal. We
are doing this again.
The Journal contains contributions from
42 students, three faculty members, and
two staff members. We have pub-

Many excellent poems include a num-

pers are by Eduardo Gutierrez. A
group of haunting photographs is by
Chandra Travis.

DVNYs NetDoctors and IEEE Club Members Visit
Microsoft
By Dr. Jude Lamour, Chair, DVNY Net-
work and Communications Management
On January 30, 2013, a group of 14
Networking and Engineering students
accompanied by Professors Lamour,
Mustafa, and Zevallos, took a special
trip to the Microsoft Technology Center
(MTC) located on The Avenue of the
Americas and 51st Street. The purpose
of the visit was twofold: to expose the
students to bleeding edge technology in
the Information Technology (IT) field
and to give them some insight into how
such technology is utilized in enterprise
organizations.
Upon arrival at the MTC, our team was
greeted by the Microsoft employees and
was made to feel right at home. From
the main conference room, we moved
straight to the Envisioning Center
showcasing the use of future technology.
This area includes all the latest hard-
ware gadgets that Microsoft is work-
ing on including the humongous
touchscreen computer device seen on
CNN and MSNBC during the elec-
tion. This device allows journalists to
use their hands instead of a mouse
(currently called Normal User Inter-
face (NUI) as opposed to Graphical
User Interface (GUI)) to move things
around the big screen.
Well, we were up close and had the
opportunity to experience this awe-
some technology and the future plans
for technology similar to the
touchscreen seen on CNN and
MSNBC.
In the Envisioning Center showcasing
room, we also reviewed the new Mi-
crosoft Surface. We learned about the
various options available including the
Surface RT and the Surface Pro. The
students were engaged and asked
many questions relating to hardware
and software technology .
They learned about ARM, solid state
technology, virtualization, collabora-
tion, and cloud computing. They spent
several minutes covering Windows 8
features and customizations. They
also learned about the Unified Exten-
sible Firmware Interface (UEFI)
which replaces the Basic Input/Output
System (BIOS) firmware interface in
traditional IBM personal computers
(PCs).
This was a great experience for our
students. Students were not only ex-
posed to new technology, they were
able to understand how the world
around them is changing with the use
of technology. But above all, they
were able to comprehend the im-
portance of a great education. It was
clear throughout the presentation that
tomorrows employers will have great
demand for skilled workers. The trip
put all the things they are learning in
the classrooms into perspective.
Career Services Spotlight:
Join a Few LinkedIn
Groups Today By: David Blum, Employer Liaison,
DVNY Career Services,
Often the key to a successful job
search is developing warm leads.
My definition of a warm job lead is
getting your resume considered for an
opportunity because it arrived on the
hiring managers desk in a fashion
that did not require it to stand out a
cut above thousands of resumes that
were submitted to a general posting.
How can you generate warm leads for
yourself? One very effective way is
by becoming active in relevant
Groups on LinkedIn.
One very important reason to fully
complete your profile on LinkedIn is
that the underlying algorithms upon
which LinkedIn is programmed are
designed to have your profile appear
at the top of an Internet search when-
ever your name is used. Also, keep
in mind that reviewing profiles is a
great way to research your competi-
tion or the person who has the job
YOU WANT.
LinkedIn Groups are more than just
another step towards completing your
profile. It adds a degree of respecta-
bility and credibility to your overall
status as an up & coming profession-
al. Just like any other activity, to be
effective, you must be proactive. You
can gains lots of valuable insights by
reading the email digests and partici-
pating in the discussions its a great
way to learn about subjects working
professionals believe are important. It
also gives you timely, easy access to
opportunities that are posted to the
group. Act quickly to get your re-
sume in first it never hurts! We also
highly recommend asking members of
your Groups to join your network,
which can open the door to a plethora
of valuable conversations about op-
portunities for you.

Queens Center Life
Elect Your Elective Campaign
By: Majeda DRozario , Operations
Support Coordinator, Queens Center
Many students have asked me in the
past why they couldnt choose their
electives and I didnt have an answer.
Therefore, we decided to give our stu-
dents what they wanted -an option to
choose electives they would like to see
being offered in Queens Center. As a
result, we launched the Elect Your
Electives campaign.
Queens Center staff reached out to
students by visiting classrooms and the
Resource Center. We also talked to all
students that visited Student Central.
Students were really excited about the
chance to give input, resulting in about
100 votes! SOCS315 - Marriage and
the Family was the winner.

DVNYs Queens Center Hosts Meet the Faculty
Event
By: Sheryl Garcia , Student Worker,
Queens Center
In the last Meet the faculty event held
at the Queens Center, the students had the
privilege to converse with some of the
current professors and the Center Dean,
Elena Litescu. Between laughs and cups
of coffee some of the topics of discus-
sions were: the differences between ma-
jors, events such as career fairs and
games tournaments, and even the opening
of new classes at the Center. This type of
informal meetings allows us, the students,
to communicate our concerns, learn about
new changes, and know about future ac-
tivities ?
