Dear Brothers and Sisters,It’s important to keep our

monthly Lodge meetings brief and exciting, and that is why the Chairman of the Italian Cul-ture Commission, Pat Moreno, has put together a visiting speaker program. These speak-ers are mainly college profes-sors who are willing to attend Lodge meetings and speak about Italy and Italian culture. The Lodges that have already hosted some of these speakers have thoroughly enjoyed them. Any Lodge President may re-quest a speaker by contacting Brother Moreno. He is happy to work with Lodge Presidents to determine the best speaker for their Lodge. Please take advan-tage of this excellent program.

Congratulations to the win-ners of our bowling tournament. Thank you to Sports Commis-sion Chairman Aldo Caria, Jr. and his committee for putting together another great sport-ing event. Thank you also to the Woburn Sons of Italy for hosting a coalition of fi ne food at their Lodge.

On Sunday, May 6, the Law and Justice Day Breakfast will be held at the Crestview in Wo-burn. Call the Grand Lodge ear-ly to reserve your tickets. This will be another great breakfast put on by the Chairman of the Commission for Social Justice Al DeNapoli and his commis-sion. You can read about our

four outstanding recipients in this edition of the Sons of Italy News.

Organization and Education Commission Chairman Lou Flo-riani, Jr. and his commission will be holding a Workshop for District 5 on Saturday, May 5 at the Braintree Sons of Italy. The previous two workshops have been a great success; for everyone who has participated it was a great learning experience.

On Sunday, May 20 the Schol-arship Commission will hold its annual Scholarship Luncheon at the Braintree Sons of Italy. Chairman Donna Giuliani and her commission have put to-gether another great program. Please come and support these outstanding students. Tick-ets are available at the Grand Lodge.

Chairman Anthony Panag-gio Jr. is hard at work on the annual Walk-a-thon, the pro-ceeds of which will benefi t the Charitable and Educational Trust. The walk will be held on June 10 at DCR’s Breakheart Reservation in Saugus. Please call the Grand Lodge for further information.

On June 16, we will hold our one day convention at the Holiday Inn in Mansfi eld. Busi-ness will include proposals, by-law changes, and the 2013 budget. Please make sure that all eligible delegates attend this convention.

Our annual Grand Lodge Lob-sterfest will be held on August 4 at the Hingham Sons of Italy. Don’t miss out on this event —tickets always sell out. Call the Grand Lodge early to reserve your tickets.

The State Council has decided to replace our annual ‘Pot of Gold’ drawing with a Calendar Raffl e for the month of July. The Calendar Raffl e gives you 35 chances to win. The tickets are $10 each and are being distrib-uted to all lodges. Prizes range from $100 to $800. If any lodge hasn’t received their tickets or would like more, please call the Grand Lodge.

The Supreme Lodge has an-nounced the 2012 National Raffle. Tickets are $50 each. The fi rst prize is $15,000, and there are fi ve (5) 2nd prizes of $1,000 each. Only 1,500 tickets will be sold. All tickets must be returned to the Grand Lodge by August 24. Please call the Grand Lodge to purchase tickets.

Kathy and I would like to thank all the Lodges that have invited us to their functions. It’s impossible for us to attend every event, but we appreciate the invitations and look forward to attending future functions.

In closing, we would like to ask that God Bless all of our members, the Order Sons of Italy, and our service men and women overseas protecting our freedom.

Domenica 6 maggio avra’ luogo al ‘Crestview’ di Woburn l’annuale colazione ‘Law and Justice Day’.

perche’ i biglietti vanno a ruba.

The original ladies lodge #1417 was formed on May 6, 1926 at the North Adams Drury High School Gym. The lodge name was “Ordine Figlia di Italia in America Lodgea Feminile.”

Present at this time were the following offi cers from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts: Judge Zattoli, Grand Archivisto N. Toscano and Grand Treasurer A. Padula. Also present were Brother Vincent Bellomo of the Worcester Lodge, offi cers and members of the Lodge Gorizia (men’s lodge), Nicola Gattile and Silvio Resnati of Pittsfi eld, Peter Bresciani, and Venerable Maria Ciamfl one of Lodge Aurora of Greenfi eld, Massachusetts.

Michael Lopardo opened the session with Orator Achille DeFalco, and 79 ladies were in i t iated. Mayor Wi l l iam Johnson, businessman Nelson McGraw, Superintendent of Schools Grover Bowman and President of the Chamber of Commerce George Flood spoke about the good Italian American citizens in North Adams, making reference to some successful businessmen.

The Original Charter members were Jennie Trisorio, Petrovice Partenope, Theresa Partenope and Constance Giliotti. The fol-lowing offi cers were initiated: Venerable Rose Bianco, Assis-tant Venerable Viola Gigliotti,

Ex-Venerable Julia Cirullo, Ora-tor Josephine Tassone, Secre-tary Evelina DeMarco, Financial Secretary Francesca Trisorio, Treasurer Theresa DeMarco, Trustees Magdeline Siciliano, Maria Florini, Domencia Pieri, Rosina Gallese and Josephine Spagnola, Master of Ceremonies Adelina Gallese and Constance Giglotti, and Sentinel Columbia Grande.

A Grand Lodge convention was held in North Adams about 1935. It is interesting to note that the dues were 25 cents per month. Between the years 1940 and 1972 there were as many as 450 members, and at one time the North Adams lodge was the largest ladies lodge in Massachusetts.

The men’s Lodge was insti-tuted on March 28, 1917, cre-ated due to the increase infl ux of Italian immigrants that began in the late 19th century. The founders were Achille DeFalco, Michael Lopardo and Paolo Ur-bano. Lodge #704 cared for its Italian heritage offering medical care and an insurance death plan of $500.00. Guiding the lodge through the turbulent 30’s were such men as Judge Ernest Rosaco, who was instrumental in having the Italian language taught in Drury High School.

The office of the Counsu-late General of Italy in Boston has announced that they will be hosting an Italian gala, Italianissimo! on June 1, 2012 at Louis in Boston. The event will benefit the Friends of the Italian Cultural Center of Boston Foundation, whose mission is to contribute to the development of an Italian Cultural Center that will serve Boston and the surround-ing regions. The Center will promote Italian culture, art, language, history, science, business, food, music, sport, and unique lifestyle. The or-ganization is also working to fund Italian language programs in New England schools, which have received little monetary support in the past few years.

The gala, scheduled to co-incide with Italy’s Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day) on June 2, promises a celebration of all things Italian and will feature exclusive fashions by Louis, fi ne Italian cuisine by internationally acclaimed Chef Filippo La Mantia, live enter-tainment, and exclusive live auction items.

Tickets are available for $250 by calling the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts at 617-489-5234, or by visiting the event website at www.italianissimo.eventbrite.com. Tickets will be available until May 25.

In a bowl cut butter into fl our with a butter knife. Add sugar and then add water. Stir with fork until it looks like little balls. Do not knead. With your hands, make a ball of the mixture and refrigerate for one-half hour.

After one-half hour, cut dough into four parts. With rolling pin, roll each portion one at the time into a thin rectangular shape. Cover rectangular piece lightly with peanut butter. Then lightly spread jelly of choice over peanut butter. Sprinkle walnuts over jelly. Fold into a long roll beginning at side of rectangular piece of dough (about three inches wide). Place lengthwise (seal side down) in lightly greased cookie sheet. Continue to do same with the remaining portions of dough, placing two rolls in each baking sheet. Brush tops of rolls lightly with milk for a golden color. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for about twenty to thirty minutes.

For ease of handling, use a spatula to remove from baking sheet and allow to cool on cutting board. Cut diagonally into biscotti. Store cooled Peanut Butter Biscotti in a canister.

NOTE: I am pleased to share this unique recipe with you. A dear friend created it years ago. Antoinette (Marcantonio) Benda, sister of Dr. Joseph Marcantonio, and Rose Sinopoli decided to put together ingredients that she enjoyed with the hopes of making a different cookie. She created these delicate and tasty biscotti.

In 1969, Lodge Gorizia and the Ladies Lodge #1417 merged to form North Adams Lodge #704. The fi rst Venerable was Henry Puppolo, who was the motivating force for the forma-tion of a mixed lodge. A lodge was purchased at one Melody Lane, which was changed to 1492 Christopher Columbus Drive, an effort spearheaded by John Lipa. The building was sold in July 2010. The visiting Nurse Association offered the use of their building for our meetings. Membership dwindled down to 70 people.

John Puppolo brought Babe Ruth and the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1938 as guest speakers. John Volpe, former Governor, Ambas-sador to Italy, and former Grand Venerable, was a guest speaker. He was a classmate of John Puppolo at Wentworth College.

Member Louis Floriani was a State Trustee and is presently Chairman of the Organization & Education Commission.

Members meet on the 4th Mon-day of the month at 7p.m. in the V.N.A. & Hospice, 535 Curran Memorial Hwy, North Adams, MA. The current president is Paul Catelotti.

On Monday, April 23, the Italian Culture Commission hosted a lecture by Vincent J. Cannato, an Associate Profes-sor of History at UMass Bos-ton, at the Burlington Public Library. Professor Cannato spoke on his recent publication, American Passage.

Professor Cannato teaches courses on the histories of New York City, Boston, immigration, and the twentieth century. He has written for numerous publi-cations including The New York Times, The Wall Street Jour-nal, The Washington Post, The Weekly Standard, and The New Republic. His many appoint-ments and publications can attest to his accomplishments as a gifted writer and speaker.

His recent publication, Amer-ican Passage, is an absorbing, well-researched read. It is an exciting and rewarding book for all of us whose Italian parents, grandparents, and other rela-tives experienced Ellis Island. In the immature immigration

experience of a young America, the book is charged with the many personal and diffi cult tri-als of immigrants from around the globe seeking refuge in the New World. The Boston Globe’s Michael Kenney, in his review of the book, noted that “Vincent J. Cannato’s ‘American Passage’ is a fi nely honed account that encompasses both the human story of the immigration ex-perience, often a sad one, and the political and bureaucratic responses.”

This lecture is presented as part of our continued search for people with expertise in some aspect of the Italian language and culture. A list of speak-ers and musicians who have presented in the past six years can be requested by emailing [email protected]. Many of these experts are available to speak at lodges and clubs cel-ebrating the Italian tradition. For a listing of other current Grand Lodge events, please visit osiama.org.

Vinegar Peppers. The Contorni served with these courses were roasted potatoes and broccoli rabe sautéed in oil. The Dolci (desserts) were sfogliatelle and cream puffs and the bevande (beverages) were red and white wine, espresso, coffee, and tea.

James Geany and his Orchestra provided the dancing music, and needless to say the dance fl oor was always very busy. The attendees donned an array of interesting costumes and prizes were awarded for best male and female costume. Brother Sal Pinzone of the Piave Fiume Lodge won the men’s prize and Lena Farese of the Cornelia dei Gracchi Lodge won for the ladies. Margaret Campbell, Chair-man of the State Trustees, was dressed from head to toe as a court jester, or in Italian, il Punchinello.

The raffl e table was fi lled with beautiful and in-teresting prizes. The lucky winners will enjoy their prizes for quite a while.

Patrick Moreno, Chairman of the Italian Culture Commission, welcomed the guests and spoke briefl y on what the Commission has accomplished and the many new programs that are available to all mem-bers. He then introduced State President James DiStefano who thanked all who attended.

Patrick Moreno and his commissioners are to be congratulated for presenting such an entertaining evening. Perhaps next year we will have to seek a larger venue for this event, as a number of late res-ervations could not be honored.

To our photographer, Dom Campochiaro, we thank you for always being there for us, and for providing the outstanding photos in this issue.

The Organization and Education Commission of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts has organized four (4) Education Workshops throughout Massachusetts during 2012.

The fi rst workshop for fi lial lodges in District 3 and 4 was held on February 11, 2012 at the Ambrose D. Cedrone Lodge in Newton, MA, and the second workshop for fi lial lodges in District 1 and 2 was held on March 3, 2012 at the ITAM Lodge in Pittsfi eld, MA.

These Workshops are presented by members of the Organization and Education Commission, Membership Commission, Offi cers of the State Council and Chairmen of Permanent Commissions.

The agenda for the workshops begins with a presentation of the Organization and Education (O&E) Commission and how it is structured. The Commission supervises the spreading of ideals and purposes of the Order by written publications, lectures, visita-tions, and ceremonies. They do what is necessary to organize new lodges. The O&E is charged with supervising the ceremony at the institution of new lodges as well as the installation of offi cers and initiation of members at said ceremony. The Commission oversees the Filial Lodges to ensure they observe the rules and regulations of the rituals with the purpose of adding dignity and solemnity to the ritualistic ceremonies of lodges.

In the next section, State Council offi cers who are present give an overview of the different aspects of the Council and how they serve the local lodges.

A presentation on the duties of lodge offi cers follows. This sec-tion is most important as it outlines the duties of the President, Vice President, Immediate Past President, Orator, Recording Sec-retary, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Trustees, Masters and/or Mistresses of Ceremonies, and Guard. It also provides information for local lodge Arbitration Committee and State Delegates.

There is also a presentation on the duties and responsibilities of the State Deputy with an emphasis on the State Deputy’s report and the Lodge President’s quarterly report of the State Deputy.

There is also a review of Parliamentary Procedure and the im-portance these procedures play in ensuring a well-run meeting.

Chairmen of Permanent Commissions of the Grand Lodge are present and review the workings of their respective Commis-sions. Present at these meetings have been the Junior Division President, Historical Chairman, Italian Culture Chairman, State Deputy Chairman, Membership Chairman, representatives from the Benefi t Insurance Commission.

A presentation on our newest program, ‘OSIA Comunita’, is given by David Covucci. OSIA Comunita’s objective is to connect our members in need of a helping hand with other members or outside organizations that can provide the help or service they are seeking.

The newly updated handbooks for Lodge Presidents and Mem-bers are presented.

A question and answer period follows each presentation to en-sure that participants understand the material presented which allowing them an opportunity to voice their opinions, concerns and needs.

Thanks goes to Brother Lou Floriani, O&E Chairman, Stephen Cozzaglio, Liaison, the Commission members as well as all State Offi cers and Chairmen of Permanent Commissions who have participated, for the success of these workshops.

The workshop for lodges in District 5 will be held on May 5, 2012 at the Braintree Men’s Lodge in Braintree, MA. The fi nal workshop of the series for lodges in Districts 6 and 7 will be held on June 2, 2012 at the Plains School in Portsmouth, NH.

We would also like to thank the host lodges who helped make these workshops a resounding success. Your lunches were deli-cious and helped to make this an enjoyable event.

To our photographer Dom Campochiaro, thank you for your participation and taking some great photos.

PORTSMOUTH — Today’s North End, home to posh ho-tels, gourmet restaurants and designer shops, grew out of the ashes of an urban renewal project that decimated an im-migrant neighborhood in the 1960s.

ing up with the Portsmouth Athenaeum on a large-scale project to preserve a portion of the city’s history that otherwise could soon be lost forever.

All that remains of the old North End, the area of down-town bordered by Market, High, Congress, Bridge, Maplewood and Russell Streets, is a cluster

of a dozen buildings on what is now known as “The Hill.” These buildings were saved and con-verted into offi ce, restaurant and retail space, while the rest of the homes in the North End were razed in the name of progress.

“It’s sad, isn’t it?” remarked Sons of Italy Seacoast Lodge #2303 member Valerie Capode-lupo Koloshey, as she glanced over a “condemnation map” at the athenaeum showing the urban renewal area and the names of families displaced by the federally funded movement. “I think it is.”

Koloshey and fellow Sons of Italy member Judy Capobianco are also saddened by the fact there is a dearth of photo-graphic documentation on the city’s old immigrant neighbor-hoods. Fearing the city might soon lose that part of its his-tory, they have set out on an ambitious collaboration with the Athenaeum to preserve the legacy of their ancestors.

Even the Athenaeum, the nonprofi t membership library and museum in the heart of Market Square that strives to collect and preserve materials relevant to the history of the city and region, has a gaping hole

in its collection. Director Tom Hardiman said it has 16,000 images in its collection, but three-quarters are from 1860 to 1890.

“An organization like ours relies on people’s generosity. We have what people have hap-pened to give us,” he said. “This is a soft spot (in the Athenaeum collection). We want to round that out.”

Italian immigrants began to settle in the North End in the late 1800s and by 1930 they represented more than 90 percent of the population in that area, Koloshey said. They developed a self-contained community of grocers, bakers, shops and services all bound together by language and cul-ture, she said.

“This is a part of Portsmouth’s history,” Hardiman said. “If nothing else, it’s a community that was very cohesive and be-cause of being evicted they had to be dispersed.”

The Sons of Italy and the Athenaeum are making a plea to the community. They would like to see any old family pho-tographs of the city’s immigrant neighborhoods. They organized an event at the Portsmouth Public Library on Saturday,

March 24 which they accept donated pictures. All pictures will be scanned onto a computer and returned to their owners.

For the Athenaeum, it is a chance to more robustly docu-ment the city to which it is devoted. For the Sons of Italy, it represents possibly one of the last opportunities to preserve the heritage and culture that thrived here less than a century ago. Koloshey said there will be a second phase of the project, where they will make video or audio recordings of interviews with the remaining former residents of that neighborhood and their descendants. Though she is originally from Haverhill, Massachusetts, and only joined the Sons of Italy a year ago, Ko-loshey is devoted to the cause. She said she views it as one of the most important projects the Sons of Italy could be a part of.

A memorial bench across from the Sheraton Harborside Hotel is the only marker recog-nizing the former residents of the “Little Italy.” Koloshey said the old neighborhood deserves a “much more substantial or-nament” and that immigrants have a “right to a place in his-tory.” She hopes this project ac-complishes both of those things.

Wilmington Sons of Italy SponsorsBreakfast with the Easter Bunny

Proceeds to Benefit Wilmington’s Relay for Life

On the morning of Palm Sunday, the Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge #2183 held its 8th Annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wilmington.

Approximately 300 people from Wilmington and its sur-rounding towns stopped by between 9:00 AM and noon to enjoy a sumptuous breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage links, crisp bacon, French toast sticks, blueberry muffins, orange juice, milk, and coffee.

In addition to breakfast, the children enjoyed having their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, who stayed throughout the entire breakfast, much to the delight of the little ones. Several dozen Eas-ter baskets were made by Sons of Italy members and were raff led off after everyone was served. Local businesses also donated gift cards and certifi cates.

Proceeds from this year’s breakfast will benefit Wilm-ington’s Relay for Life, which

will be held June 15-16, 2012, at Shawsheen Technical High School in Billerica. The Wilm-ington Lodge not only sup-ports the Relay monetarily, they also sponsor a team of walkers. Relay for Life helps raise awareness and educates in the fight against cancer, a disease with which several members of the Sons of Italy are coping.

This year, as in past years, the breakfast was a great success and raised money for a very worthy cause.

Brother Phil was born in Adami, Italy in 1913. At the age of seven he immigrated with his parents to the United States. Both his father and uncle became members of the Watertown Lodge. At 26, Brother Phil became the young-est Venerable (President) of the Lodge. He would later hold positions at the state level. Many of today’s members remember playing for Brother Phil in the town’s Little League, where he coached for over 25 years. Brother Phil served the Town of Watertown in a number of positions, including as a School Committee member, Town Treasurer, Town Council and Planning Board member, and Selectman. In his honor, there is a meeting room dedicated in his name on the lower level of the Town Hall.

State President James DiStefano was on hand to present Brother Phil with a procla-mation thanking him for his 80 years of service to the Sons of Italy. National Second Vice President Joseph Russo was also in attendance. A dinner prepared by Master Chef Joe Marchio and his assistant Joe DiMambro was served after the evening’s festivities were completed.

Their performance was “Unforgettable.”

On March 18, 2012, the St. Patrick and St. Joseph feasts were celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Rochester, New Hampshire. Instead of a traditional corn beef and cab-bage dinner, a spaghetti and meatball dinner was prepared by the Granite State Lodge #2380. The St. Mary’s parish-ioners decorated their hall with the Irish and Italian fl ags, as well as a depiction of a leprechaun stirring a pot of

spaghetti and meatballs. After dinner, we were entertained by none other than Father Daniel Sinibaldi and Kay Sanfacon to the tune of “Unfor-gettable,” and the performance lived up to its name. The festivi-ties continued with a wonderful array of homemade desserts from the congregation followed by music and dancing under the direction of DJ Pomeroy. This might be the start of some-thing big!
