with cell phones, tweets, and email, the whole concept ofworrying about a 25 cent toll call now seems a littleludicrous, let alone depending on land lines for phoneservice. But that is the way it was! Still, it seems like justyesterday when families debated heavily about movingacross the county line simply because it would cost themthe price of a toll call to talk to mom in Westlake!

PASS THE BISCUITS: Long ago, mom sometimesliked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. One night when she had made breakfast after a long, hardday at work mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, andextremely burned biscuits in front of dad. All dad did wasreach for his biscuit, smile at mom and ask me how our daywas at school. Mom apologized to dad for burning thebiscuits. He said: “Honey, I love burned biscuits.” Laterthat night, when asked if he really liked his biscuits burned,he wrapped us in his arms and said, “Your momma put in along hard day at work today and she’s real tired. Andbesides... a burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!” Life is full of

imperfect things... and imperfect people. No one is the best at hardly anything, and we all forget birthdays andanniversaries just like everyone else. How about learning to accept eachother’s faults and choosing to celebrateeach others differences as one of themost important keys to creating ahealthy, growing, and lastingrelationship? So...please pass thebiscuits. And yes, the burned one willdo just fine. Life is too short to wakeup with regrets... Love the people whotreat you right and forget about the oneswho don’t. Enjoy Life Now - It HasAn Expiration Date!

While we allunderstand the importanceof saving for retirement, itis not always easy findingthe money to fund youraccounts. However, 2011offers an intriguing op-portunity. Thanks tolegislation signed into lawlast year, most Americansare seeing a 2% increase intheir paychecks. The newrule calls for a one-year “taxholiday” by reducing SocialSecurity payroll taxes from

6.2% to 4.2% of the first$106,800 of earned income.

If you’ve been able tolive without this income inthe past, consider takingadvantage of this op-portunity by bumping upyour contribution per-centage by 2% and directingthe one-year savings intoyour retirement plan.

A 2% tax cut for anindividual making $85,000a year equals about $32 a

Rejoice all readers of TheVillager because winter is almostdone. In my mind there are only threemonths of winter, so we have only alittle more time to go and then springwill be right around the corner.

Time really passes us by andreally does seem to fly, doesn’t it? Ireally had that feeling the last fewdays when I was seeing patients inthe office. We regularly get patientsthat will wait longer than their six-month check up appointment should be. People will tell methat haven’t seen a dentist for 12 or 18 months or maybe twoto three years, etc. Well, I had a few new patients in oneweek who have waited over 20 years to come back to thedentist – none related either. They all were quite young - notmore than 40-50 years old. It was interesting to hear theirstories because it wasn’t necessarily a matter of finances, butjust a matter of taking the time. For one patient, if somethingin his mouth bothered him, he would wait, and soon he wasn’tpaying any attention to it because broken teeth became normalfor him. Another patient thought maybe teeth got better bythemselves. The other patient could feel the crumbling teethas they were disintegrating, but being an eternal optimist, just thought that everything will be ok.

Well, unfortunately, all is not ok. Broken, crumblingteeth are not the norm. Now they must begin somecomprehensive, long-term treatment to restore the functionof their mouths and their smiles.

Had they just come in 10 years ago or once every fewyears, most of their dental problems could have been adverted.(Know that we always recommend check-ups twice per year). The thing about broken teeth and most dental problems isthat they do not get better by themselves, as much as wewould wish them to do so. They need to be taken care of.The problems will not go away. It will always get worse andmore costly if you try to just wait out a dental problem. Manypeople also make the mistake that if it is a back tooth, it

Stop Waiting......really doesn’t matter thatmuch because it doesn’tshow when they smile. Yourback teeth support your headand neck. When you beginto lose back teeth, the middleand lower parts of your facebegin to get scrunchedtogether to give you a mucholder look than you may beand then it starts to throw offyour facial muscles whichare also connected to theneck and back muscles.

Your mouth is notdisconnected from the rest ofyour body and it can becrucial to your overallstability and overall health. In addition, to that, withoutyour back teeth, the frontteeth are now doing doubleduty, of not only biting intothings, but also doing thechewing, which the backteeth are made to do. Yourfront teeth then begin to

separate, chip and breakbecause they are really notmade for heavy dutychewing.

Simple advice that Igive to people all the timewho call me for a bedsideconsult on their dentalproblems – go see a dentist. No dentist can treat theseproblems over the phone andyou can’t just prescribe a pillto fix most dental problems. There have been majoradvances in dentistry overthe past years – but we stillneed the patient to come intothe office to fix theproblems!

We are here to help youfix any of your dentalproblems and to serve yourdental needs. Call us todayat 440-892-1810 for a freeconsultation – we are here tohelp you smile.

That addsup to $1700 a year.Assuming that an individualis 35 years old and re-directsthe savings into a retirementaccount with a hypotheticalaverage annual return of7%, that one-time $1700investment could grow tomore than $14,800 by theage of 67. Of course, thelevel your tax savings from2011 reaches depends onseveral factors, includinghow much extra you arecontributing, how you investthe money, and how longyou have until retirement.

If this year ’s “taxholiday” inspires you tocontinue saving that same2% going forward, you canpotentially greatly impactyour retirement savings.

For example, assume a

hypothetical investment of$32/week, or $1700 a year,in a tax-deferred retirementaccount. Here are variousoutcomes based on ahypothetical 7% annualaverage return.

In 10 years theinvestment could grow to$24,662

In 20 years theinvestment could grow to$74,224

In 30 years theinvestment could grow to$173,829

In 40 years theinvestment could grow to$374,000

This example is forillustration purposes onlyand does not reflect theperformance of any specificinvestment. There are noguarantees that a consistentrate of return can beachieved.

“It is all about creating‘gathering places.’” SaidPuzzitiello. “Whether it is anewer concept for the greatroom indoors, or theoutdoor spot where familiesand friends get together, thebetter idea for home designtoday is creating spaceswhere people connect.”

A decade ago, sprawling landscapes andhuge square foot homesdominated the upscaleneighborhoods.

“Today, thehomeowner is no longerlooking for 6,000 squarefoot interiors and 10 roomswhere people never see eachother, or massive,maintenance-heavy yards.”Said Puzzitello.

“We have recreated theconcept of quality space.Indoors, that meanswelcoming gathering areasaround functional kitchen, family room, and greatroom designs. Outdoors, itmeans the central gatheringarea where families canactually enjoy theirproperties and one anotherwith some relaxedintimacy.”

Caring For Our NeighborsThis past year Community West Foundation gave $3,350,716 to our community, supporting Fairview and

Lutheran Hospitals and charitable organizations providing direct service to the needy. Here are someexamples of the important ways Community West Foundation impacts our community.

The doors are always open at St. Paul’s Community Church, a congregation with adistinguished history and deep commitment to the urban community in which it is located.Community West Foundation’s grant of $20,000 for the Outreach Center/Emergency Assistance

Program assisted with food, clothing, transportation, hospitality and much more asclients moved from crisis to stability. The touchand the presence of God working is seen at St. Paul’shelping the struggling families, the working poor, seniors on fixed incomes, veterans, people withdisabilities and those who are homeless.

St. Paul’s Community Church has been a symbolof hope and compassion in Cleveland for manyyears, offering nourishment for the spirit as wellas the body.

Sadly, Thanksgiving is only another day toworry about the next meal for some in ourcommunity. These people know the truemeaning of hunger.

Community West Foundation joined forceswith the Hunger Network of GreaterCleveland and funded $19,500 for the WestSide Holiday Initiative to make ThanksgivingDay special for thousands of our neighborsgoing without a holiday meal. In 2010, over5,461 families came to the West Side HungerCenters to receive a Thanksgiving meal, complete with turkey and all the trimmings. The Hunger Network is one of the mostextensive emergency hunger relief programsin Cuyahoga County and dispenses 75% of all food in Cuyahoga County directly into the hands ofthose in need.

It is hard to believe, but withinour own community people go tobed hungry every night.

Community West Foundationsupports and contributes to SecondHarvest Food Bank of NorthCentral Ohio. 5.5 million poundsof nourishing food was provided tothose in our community in 2010through 160 programs thatincluded food pantries, soupkitchens and emergency shelters. The “Backpack” program and Kid’sCafé’s assist youth caught in thecycle of poverty. The generoussupport of Community WestFoundation, amounting to $30,000in 2010, ensures that SecondHarvest Food Bank of North CentralOhio may help those in needcontinue to realize that they surelyremain God’s own with ourcommunity.

There are a million andone reasons people come upwith to avoid exercising. Dr.Judith Wurtman has comeup with several clever ideasto combat those reasons.

In her article originallypublished on TheHuffington Post, Dr.Wurtman talks abouthearing all sorts ofcomplaints about people notwanting to get involved in afitness routine. To her, manyof those complaints werejustified: lack of time, lackof motivation, andresentment at having to dosomething that felt like achore, etc.

To combat thosecomplaints, Wurtman cameup with a list of activitiesthat can be integrated intoone’s daily life. Accordingto Wurtman, working outdoesn’t mean you have tostop working! She offersthese ten simple suggestionsfor getting in a little exercisewithout having to go to thegym.

1. Park on the highestlevel of the garage and jogup to your car aftershopping or work. Do notdo this with stiletto heels.Check your voice mailwhile doing this.

2. Food shopping takesvaluable time away from

swerving improves hand-eye coordination.)

3. Balance on one footwhile waiting in line. Aftertwo minutes, change thefoot. Do not hold onto

shopping carts, counters orthe ATM machine. Do notdo this wearing thosestilettos. When you becomeadept at this, do your e mailat the same time.

4. Pick up litter. Thisonly works if you live wherethere is litter and you carrya plastic bag to wrap aroundyour hands. Squat ratherthan bend over so you donot injure your back. Peopledo squats all the time in thegym but doing it on the

sidewalk over a discardedsoda can helps your musclesand the environment.

5. Keep a stretchy cordor light weights on thepassenger seat and do armand back exercises whilewaiting at long traffic lights.Do not tie cord around stickshift.

6. Use a hand-free cellphone so you can talk whilejogging. (Unless you aretraining for a race and doingspeed work, your pace

should allow you to carry ona conversation withoutpanting.) If yourconversation is private, donot do this in a crowdedgym or running /walkingpath.

7. Pace up and downyour office while on aconference call or ifpossible, go for a walk. Whywaste good exercise timesitting at your desk when

Make your bathtub safer with the Easy Step™!The affordable bathtub safety conversion...

“I gave my mother an Easy Step™.

It gave her confidence and peace of mind.”

In just one day Miracle Method can make your

bathroom safer and more convenient with the

Easy Step… at a fraction of the cost of walk in tubs.

The Easy Step™ : Install Before you Fall!No room poses a bigger

threat to safety for theelderly than the bathroom. The greatest danger isslipping and falling whenentering and exiting thebathtub, which contributesto nearly 25% of hospitaladmissions for people age65 and older.

The Easy Step™ byMiracle Method, increasesbathroom safety by creatinga 24" by 9" opening, allowing the user to stepthrough, not over the tub.“It’s not uncommon for anelderly person to lose theirbalance when lifting theirleg over a tub,” accordingto Andrew Gorski, owner ofMiracle Method ofCleveland. The EasyStep™, along withinstallation of safety grab

bars and slip resistantsurfaces, greatly reduces therisk of slip and fallaccidents.

An affordable solution, the Easy Step™ costs afraction of expensive walkin bathtubs and takes onlyone day to install. Walk intubs typically requiretearing out the old bathtub, removing walls, andperforming extensiveplumbing modifications. Inaddition, walk in tubs usesignificant amounts of waterand take time to fill andempty while the user waitsin the tub.

“What care giversreally like about the EasyStep™ is its simplicity andthe speed in which we canmake the installation,” saysGorski. “A homeowner can

be using their tub the sameday we do the installation.”

Miracle Method canalso install safety grab bars, hand held shower nozzles, curved shower rods andeven slip resistant tubsurfaces. “Our goal,”according to Gorski, “is toprovide a safer bathroomenvironment for our elderlycustomers which will allowthem to stay independentand live in their own homeslonger.”

“Another advantage tothe Easy Step™ besidesprice over expensive walk-in tubs, is that if theremoved piece is saved,”says Gorski, “it can bereplaced at a later date andyou’ll never know theconversion had been made.”This is a welcome feature

for family members whomay be faced witheventually selling the house.Unlike major walk-in ordoor tub installations, theability to return thebathroom to normal makesthe house easier to sell.“Nobody wants to buy ahouse that requires theexpense and mess ofremoving a bulky walk-inbathtub that you don’t wantor need”, adds Gorski.

Gorski offers advice tosenior citizens and theirfamily caregivers lookingfor easier bathtub access.Avoid high-pressure salespeople who won’t quoteprices over the phone andalways have someone withyou to help you make thebest decision for yoursituation. Avoid solutions

that will not only costthousands to install, butthousands to replace.

Many Easy Step™customers also use MiracleMethod’s refinishingprocess to change the colorof a dated tub and tile at thesame time. “Having all thework done at once allows usto pass on cost savings. Werealize that many of ourelderly customers are onfixed incomes and we wantto make this experienceeasy, timely andaffordable,” says Gorski.

A lifelong Clevelandresident, Gorski iscommitted to providing thehighest quality work. Hisoffice not only offers theEasy Step™, but surfacerefinishing for bathtubs, tile, vanities and kitchen

countertops, all with a five-year guarantee. To learnmore, log on towww.miraclemethod.com/cleveland or call 216 671-3444 for a free, no pressurein home appointment.

But, ending the season with a 26-15-4 record, Ed’s found a rival in Toledo deSales that was tough

Mission Accomplished!

That is the headline for the St. Edward High wrestling team in the af-termath of the Ohio High School Athletic Associa-tion Championships on the campus of The Ohio State University.

The Eagles claimed their 26th state champion-ship trophy since 1978, rolling up 187 points to outpace runner-up Massil-lon Perry by 78.

Ed’s reclaimed the top spot they lost to Wadsworth by a scant 4.5 points a year earlier.

That blip in the Eagle championship run was plenty of motivation for coach Greg Urbas’ crew as they went to Columbus two weeks ago on a mission.

In the end, all 10 Eagle

this year’s state meet ended up on the Div. I podium as place-winners.

Three became indi-vidual state champions, including Dean Heil (119), Mark Martin (152) and Do-menic Abounader (160). Heil, a sophomore, is a re-peat champ having won at 103 last year. Martin, a ju-nior, was second in ’11, and

-er last year, is a sophomore.

What a year for the Rocky River High boys basketball team!

The Pirates (21-2) topped Holy Name, 51-44, in a Div. II district cham-pionship matchup at West-lake High Saturday night and advance to this week’s regional tournament at Bowling Green.

The Pirates rolled up a 10 point lead over the Green Wave and then fought off a Holy Name come-back in the second half. The win added the district tourna-ment trophy to River’s sec-tional championship and West Shore Conference title hardware this season. Jimmy Corrigan led the way with 20 points. He joined his teammates and a jubilant coach Michael Murrary as they cut down the nets and added another page to the 2011scrapbook that will go down as one of the best ever in R o c k y River sports history.

Bright dropped a tight decision to George DiCa-millo of St. Ignatius in an electrifying overtime ses-sion, 3-1, after battling to a 1-1 regulation draw. DiCamillo ended a dream season with the champion-ship, lodging a 38-0 overall mark.

James Suvak was third at 189 and Nick Barber took fourth at 135 for Ed’s.

at 125 and Jacob Davis

It was a year of good news for Ed’s wrestling fans as the Eagles captured sectional and district titles en route to the state crown, won the state dual meet championships and Medina Invitational Tournament, and also beat intra-state rival St. Paris Graham in a big dual meet to highlight the 2010-11 season. The 187 points they scored at this year’s state meet was the most since Ed’s set the Div. I record of 229 in 2007.

For everyone else, there is some bad news – none of Ed’s starters this year is a senior. Dean Heil of St. Ed became a two-time state champ, adding the 119

pound title to his 103 pound championship a year ago.

Rocky River’s Jimmy Corrigan (5) goes up for two in the
