Welcome to the Kootenay Women’s Show

Speak your mind, the 2014 Kootenay Women’s Show is an

opportunity for businesses and groups that provide goods and services for women to reach a receptive audience.

Kootenay Women’s Show is also designed for you, the Kootenay woman. Besides being the premiere marketing event in the Cranbrook and East Kootenay area, it is also a great way to get out and meet your neighbours, business owners and other women who share what it is to be a woman living in the Kootenays.

The show features guest speaker Wendy Mesley, CBC anchor. Mesley has won three Gemini Awards for her work on Marketplace and Undercurrents.

Mesley was honoured in 2006 with the John Drainie Award, for her contribution to Canadian broadcasting. She is also a cancer survivor and creator of the documentary “Chasing the cancer answer.”

As well, Kootenay Therapy Centre’s Suzanne Thompson will be giving a talk entitled, “At a Woman’s Core...

What every woman should know about pulling it all together, pelvic health solutions from a pelvic health physiotherapist.”

Exhibitors will be on hand to present and sell their goods and services in an intimate, up-market venue at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino pavilion. Walk around the pavilion and see what some of the area’s most in uential businesses have to o er.

Of course, there will be an assortment of the nest hors d’oeuvres, prepared by the master chef at the St. Eugene Golf Resort Casino and we’ve partnered with Creston’s Baillie-Grohman Winery to grant you, the guest, a complimentary glass of their nest wine.

Round out the evening with fabulous door prizes, gift packs and a whole lot of networking with the people who make the Kootenays a wonderful place to do business.

Speak your mind, the 2014 Kootenay Women’s Show, brought to you by the Kootenay Advertiser, is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino pavilion.

The Kootenay News Advertiser, The Cranbrook Daily Townsman and the Kimberley Daily Bulletin are selling tickets for the show. $25 for advance tickets and $30 at the door of the pavilion.

See you there!

CBC’s Wendy Mesley.

Speak your mind

An interview with our guest speaker – CBC’s Wendy Mesley

Q: What challeng-es did you face as a woman breaking into the broadcast journalism industry?

A: When I got my rst job at a radio station in Toronto  back in high school in the mid 70’s,  it was commonly taken as fact that women couldn’t be newscasters be-cause “their voices weren’t authorita-tive enough”!  Too which I would re-spond, “Well of course, if you’ve only ever heard a man read the news!” Back then, Barbra Walters and Barbra Frum were about the only women in prominent positions on the news. By the time I nished Jour-nalism School at Ryerson a few years later things began to open up. Still, when I became the rst women in the CBC parliamentary

bureau to cover the Prime Minister, there was a lot of sexism, even in our own o ce.

Q: Why is it impor-tant for news agen-cies to have a bal-ance of male and female journalists?

A: For the same reason it’s impor-tant to hear from all kinds of di erent voices that re ect the society we re-port on and write for. I don’t think there is an opinion divide between men and women on all is-sues, but we do ap-proach some things di erently. So un-less you are writing for men only,  why on earth would you want to have your stories told by men only? Also, how could employers justify not having a balance?  I’m sur-prised we are still asking this question.

Q: In addition to being a journalist, you’re also a wife and mother. Did starting a family have any impact on your career?

A: De nitely. I have always loved my work, it’s central to what I think I can o er the world. For about twenty years I worked very long

hours. I still do. But when my daugh-ter was little I went to work on a show called Marketplace because I wanted to have more con-trol over my sched-ule . The work was still intense, but for most of the year, the schedule was pre-dictable.  Working for the National is exciting, but never predictable.

Q: What motivated

you to push beyond being a CBC corre-spondent and work your way up to the host’s chair?

A: When I was younger and televi-sion stations started to realize they need-ed more women reading the news lots of young re-porters like me got o ers to go and sit in a studio. I always refused, for two reasons: I was hav-ing the time of my

life being a reporter and, I didn’t want to pretend to know what I was talking back until I actually knew something!  I rst became an an-chor  in  my mid 30’s after I’d been in the business for about 15 years. But only one day a week — I kept reporting too. I still spend more time reporting  and interviewing than anchoring.

Q: Once being di-agnosed with breast cancer, you stayed on part time at Mar-ket Place, why keep one foot in the door despite battling ill-ness?

A: Going through chemo was di cult, but there would be lots of days in the cycle when I felt ne and working was a way for me to keep my brain connected something else and feel like I was start part of the normal world. It wasn’t as if I could take o to the beach in the middle of my treatment!

Q: Women con-tinue to be out numbered by men in leadership po-sitions in govern-ment and industry. What needs to hap-pen before this will change?

A: The jobs need to be made attrac-tive to women with the skills to do the job. Some jobs are just not feasible for women (or men for that matter) who want to spend a lot of time with their family, but many jobs could and should be made

more exible. There have already been huge improvements on this front since I started out.

Q: Facebook chief operating o cer Sheryl Sandberg’s latest online cam-paign “Ban Bossy” says we need to change the way we talk to young girls who assert themselves. Do you agree?

A: The brother of my high school boy-friend wondered how he could ever like me since I was “so ambitious”. I would like to think that this is chang-ing..and that girls who assert them-selves are as nor-mal as guys who assert themselves. I haven’t read Sand-berg’s book.

Q: What advice would you give to women trying to make it to the top of their careers?

A: Pick a eld you love, work like a dog, don’t focus on the money until you really need it, and be brave!

CRANBROOK CURVES

BenevolenceAbreast in the Rockies

Abreast in the Rockies began in 2006 when a group of women de-cided to look into the possibility of starting a Dragon boat team in Cranbrook. They called for a meet-ing of interested women and were overwhelmed by the tremendous response.

A non-profi t, charitable society was formed to raise breast cancer awareness, to support breast cancer and to demonstrate that women liv-ing with breast cancer can lead full and active lives.

B.C. Professional Fire ghters Burn FundMore than 3,700 professional fi re

fi ghters from fi fty communities in British Columbia and the Yukon are building the Burn Fund’s vision. They dedicate their time and skills to support burn survivors and in-crease the public’s knowledge about fi re and burn safety issues through the work the Burn Fund does with its Burn Awareness, Research and Prevention Programs.

The Friends of the Cranbrook Women’s

Resource CentreThe Friends are a group of people

who came together to help keep the doors of the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre (CWRC) open by securing sustainable funds.

We are volunteers. We host events, apply for grants and run campaigns.

Anyone can be a Friend. We hope you will be.

Cranbrook and District Community FoundationThe Cranbrook Community en-

hances the quality of life for area residents by:

Attracting, developing and man-aging permanent endowment funds through responsible stewardship;

Assessing and responding to exist-ing and emerging community needs through grants to qualifi ed donees;

Offering a means for individuals and organizations to contribute to our community both during and af-ter their lifetime

Provide leadership in our com-munity, through convening around issues of community concern.

Cranbrook is fortunate to have many groups who spend their time and e ort to make life a lit-tle bit easier for members of the community who

may not have it as good as many of us do.Unfortunately, there are people that tend to slip

between the cracks in society and these groups do their best to help these individuals. In some cases, a disease can a ict a family member who needs to know that there is help and above all, to know that there is empathy for their condition. After all, bad things can happen to good people.

That’s where these groups step in and step up.
