It’s the people who make Chemainus so special —the

people who painted the outdoor murals that have made this charming, seaside village famous, the people who own the one-of-a-kind shops and eateries that make the community so vibrant, and the people who stop and say hi to you on the street.

The wonderful people and community spirit are two big reasons why so many people visit Chemainus each year and why you feel so welcome as soon as you step foot here.

Every year, more than 100,000 visi-tors from around the world flock to Chemainus. They c o m e f o r t h e wo r l d - f amou s murals, profes-sional live the-a t r e , m u s i c festivals, farm-er’s markets,

Le a r n about the history of

Chemainus and soak up some pub-lic art as you follow the yellow footsteps through town and discover our world-famous murals.

C h e m a i n u s ’ 4 4 murals and 10 sculp-tures celebrate our colourful history and attract thousands of visitors from all over the world to our out-door ar t gallery, con-sidered the largest in Canada.

The early history of the Chemainus area is tied to the nearby for-ests and the industries associated with them.

A sawmil l opened in 1862, and with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1880s, the town slowly grew over the next 30 years.

Like many resource-based communities, Chemainus relied on the mill and environ-mental resources, and by the late 1970s, the industry was suffering difficult times.

Chemainus’ future looked bleak when the mil ls star ted talking about closing, but the town was awarded a grant through a pro-vincial redevel-opment fund in the early 1980s. C o m m u n i t y leader s , l ed

by a new, young mayor named Graham Br uce , began sea rch ing fo r i dea s about how to best utilize the funds, and social entrepreneur Kar l Schutz was asked to contrib-ute suggestions and ultimately c o - o r d i n a t e what became a mural revital-ization project. B u s i n e s s m a n Al Johnson also played a key role in mobilizing the revitalization proj-ect.

The f i r s t mura l s appeared in Chemainus in 1982, and the gallery has grown to include 44 murals. Most of them por tray the his-tory of Chemainus, and some of the more recent additions include murals honouring

painter Emily Carr, who painted in Chemainus in 1924.

Many of Chemainus’ murals were inspired

by photographs, and they are very accu-rate portrayals of time gone by. Visit the Chemainus Visitor Centre by Waterwheel Park and ask to see the book Water Over the Wheel to see the photos that gave the ar tists

their ideas. You can also purchase a

souvenir mural map at the Visitor Centre. If you’re lucky, you

might catch artists touch-ing up the murals as you walk

around town.To learn more about the murals, visit

If yo u l ove t h e ar ts, you’l l find a lot to love about

Chemainus.Throughout the year,

you can discover profes-sional theatre in an inti-mate setting, live music and unique handmade items created by talent-ed artisans.

Inside the walls of one of the most unique buildings in Chemainus, you’ll find profession-a l a c to r s baring

their soul night after night at the renowned Chemainus Theatre Festival. Known for producing exceptional entertainment, the Chemainus Theatre Festival offers a great mix of comedy, drama, musicals and mystery each year, and 2014 is no different.

The 2014 season opened with the return of the popular musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, which sold out many nights, and the lineup continues with the comic adventure Jeeves in Bloom (until April 26), the dramatic comedy Waiting for the Parade (May 9 to June 1), the epic musical Les Misérables (June 20 to Sept. 7), the KidzPlay Munsch-ercise (July 19 to Aug. 16), the lively debate Freud’s

Last Session (Aug. 20 to 30), the family comedy Over the River

and Through the Woods (Oct. 3 to Nov. 8), and

the holiday mystery Sher lock Holmes and the Case of the Chr istmas Carol (Nov. 21 to Dec. 22).

“As a whole , I’m really pleased

by the balance and blend of this season,”

says ar tistic director Mark DuMez.

Once you decide which shows you’d like to see at the

Chemainus Theatre Festival, you can make it a dinner theatre experience by dining in the newly-renovated Playbill Dining Room, open before every matinee and evening show.

DuMez describes the changes to the din-ing room as “dynamic and exciting.”

“There’s a wonderful dramatic quality to the space that really sets the tone,” he says.

You can also shop at the Theatre, as The Gallery Gift Shop showcases more than 100 B.C. artisans, offering items that are fantastic, functional and original.

For more information about the Chemainus Theatre Festival and the 2014 season, visit www.chemainustheatrefestival.ca.

If it’s music you love, you won’t have to look far to get your fix.

Chemainus is becoming known for its fabulous festivals. Watch for the Bluegrass Festival, Accordion Festival and Jazz Festival at Waterwheel Park in July and August. Presented by the Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society, these weekend festivals bring some of the best musicians to downtown Chemainus.

The Chemainus Valley Cultural Ar ts Society also hosts Music in the Park Tuesday evenings from mid-June through August, showcasing local professional talent in the intimate outdoor setting of Waterwheel Park.

Much of Chemainus’ true beauty lies in the great out-

doors. You’ll find impressive forests, extensive trails, relax-ing beaches, flora, fauna, lakes, fishing, diving and so much more once you start exploring.

Waterwheel Park — This beautiful park in downtown Chemainus features a work-ing waterwheel and carvings hidden in trees. You’ll find a playground, a bandshell for live music and special events, and easy access to the Chemainus Valley Museum.

Trans Canada Trail — The nation-long trail has spread into the Cowichan Valley and into Chemainus. See www.tctrai l .ca or www.trailsbc.ca for details.

A s k e w C r e e k Wilderness Trail — You will find some of the largest Douglas firs in Nor th Cowichan as you wander the eight kilometres of trails.

Echo Heights — This second-growth forest is home to great Douglas Firs, swamps and many

critters, including the at-risk red-legged frog. Enjoy Camas Fest each May.

Stocking Creek Park — Beautiful trails and a picnic area make Stocking Creek Park the perfect place for a nature walk. One of the trails leads down to the creek, where you can view a breathtaking water-fall. Park amenities include a picnic area, trails, parking and toilet facilities.

Dive deep — Divers have the unique opportunity to explore the world’s only Boeing 737 ar tificial reef off the coast of Chemainus. Spot sea creatures and explore the underwater plane and his-toric shipwrecks. For information, call 250-252-0758 or visit www.divemaster.ca.

Chemainus Lake — This place is perfect for dog walking. There’s a doc k fo r fishing, and the lake is well-stocked. C i rc le the l a k e a n d explore two different types of forest.

Ful ler Lake P a r k — T h e 7.58-hectare park fea-tures a playground, beach volleyball, tennis cour ts, a fish-

Explore Saltair, Cro on and etis Island

Once you get outside of Chemainus, you’ll discover friendly people, beautiful views and great oppor-

tunities for outdoor activities in the charm-ing communities of Saltair, Thetis Island and Crofton.

Just a few minutes north of Chemainus, you’ll discover Sunny Saltair, a seaside community of roughly 1,800 people known for its parks and ocean views.

Relax and enjoy the rural feel of this beautiful spot, while exploring the parks and discovering a pub, bistro, store and more.

A short ferry ride from Old Town Chemainus brings you to Thetis Island, one of the smaller, less-travelled Gulf Islands with a permanent population of about 360 — which grows to between 1,000 and 2,000 people in fine weather seasons.

Once on Thetis, you’ll discover crystal clear waters, wonderful views, beautiful shorelines and delightful rural scenes. There is a wide vari-ety of recreational opportunities on the island, and you can find a Sunday morning Summer Market at the Telegraph Harbour Marina from mid-May to late September.

If you’re staying over on Thetis, be sure to book accom-modation in advance at one of the island’s beautiful bed and breakfasts because space is limited, and there are no campgrounds.

Just a few minutes south of Chemainus, you’ll find Crofton on the calm waters of Osborne Bay.

Crofton’s story dates back to the 19th century, and the community of about 2,500 people now features quiet parks, comfortable accommodations and a range of fam-ily activities, such as golfing, swimming, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing.

The newly expanded Crofton Seawalk is a real highlight, stretching from Crofton Beach to the ferry parking lot.

Crofton is the gateway to Salt Spring Island, which is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene and is only a short ferry ride away.

Just a few minutes south of Chemainus, you’ll find Crofton
