March is here and, so far, our year has been full of excitement and intriguing speakers. I would like to, once again, congratulate the Chapter on organizing such an enjoyable event on February 19 th with special guest speaker, Pattie Vargas, who inspired us all to remember our resilience factor. Thank you to Carolyn Barry for helping to make the night a stand-out memory for 2019. I would also like to thank Melissa McCaughey, Edwina Dirk, and Gail Oldenkamp. Your creativity and generosity helped to take the event to the next level. This isn't the only special event of the year, however. We have much more to follow, starting with our Chapter’s annual Membership Madness drive, which runs from Feb 19 th to June 30th! Our Membership Chair Natalie Angrisani is working hard to make Membership Madness fun this year. Locally, Membership Madness = recognition given to members who bring guests to meetings and as guests become members. The recognition culminates in rewards given at the July meeting to the member who brings the most guests and new members. (Top prize is a $100 restaurant gift card). At the ABWA National Level members can also gain recognition and rewards. All this by simply in- troducing people to how exceptional ABWA membership is. Please reach out to friends, family, co- workers, and colleagues and invite them to our upcoming meetings. Also, coming on March 19th, is Part 2 of our speaker panel on “Networking” tips that began with the January meeting. Rosemary Woodward will, again, be facilitating the program. So get ready for an interesting discussion and insights by our panelists seasoned with Rosemary's charming sense of humor. It should be a great night! Lastly, I would like to make sure all new members plan to attend New Member Orientation on March 19 th . Member Orientation is important for you and for the Chapter. The presentation will be filled with information about ABWA locally and nationally. But it’s a two-way street. We, also want to learn of your ABWA expectations and how best to meet them. Please contact Natalie Angrisani or me with any questions regarding the Orientation. It will begin at 5:15 P.M, prior to the regular meeting. VISION STATEMENT

The Trendsetter Chapter’s Vision is to be the best

we can be! We will strive to understand and

satisfy the needs of our members both women

and men, and make it a priority to recognize

member achievements, to celebrate member and

chapter successes and provide the opportunities

to grow with educational programs, networking

opportunities and friendship. We promise to

support one another and have fun in the process.

ABWA has a lot to offer its members through Community Connections

Community Connections is ABWA’s communication network where our members post messages and you are also able to connect with other ABWA members across the country. Chapter members also have access to regularly posted materials, forms and details about ABWA Best Practices and league reports. To be able to access the all of the opportunities available as a member, create your own member profile by going to ABWA HOME at www.abwa.org and then click on the "Login" link in the upper right of the page. If you haven’t set up your profile and your login yet and need some help, feel free to reach out to any of our Board Members or Committee Chairs. We are always here for you.

The 2nd Decade of ABWA: the 1950’s Happy Homemakers

The image of women in the 1950’s was that of happy homemakers living in suburban subdivisions with manicured green lawns. Women were encouraged to get married, settle down and have babies. In spite of that, the 1950s was a time when a small number of women began to seek higher education and women's rights groups sought equal rights for working women.

Family life in the 1950s almost always portrayed women as a mother and wife (in TV shows such as "Father Knows Best" and "Leave it to Beaver,") It was a time when women were expected to spend their lives raising a family. At the end of World War II as men returned, women left the workforce that the war had opened to them and returned to the home, and domestic life.

Some women enrolled in higher education in order to improve their domestic skills and to find husbands -- "seeking an M.R.S. degree" was a popular expression. But also in the 1950s female scholars began to emerge and started to claim their place as college professors and college department chairpersons. The first generation of ABWA members broke from tradition and were paving the way for today’s women Breaking barriers for women and on behalf of women is nothing new in ABWA and although opportuni-ties for women and pay in the business sector have evolved, there is still much work to be done.

........in April we’ll take a look at the 1960’s

As our year progresses, we have a lot to look forward to. ABWA Regional Conference is in Reno NV in April, AND, one of our biggest annual events, the “Purse-onali-TEA,” luncheon, fashion show and silent auction with be held on Saturday, May 18th. In addition, Melissa McCaughey is “officially” a Vice-Presidential candidate for ABWA’s National Board. It’s very prestigious for a Chapter to have a candidate and we are committed to assist Melis-sa in her campaign. There will be extra “fun” get-togethers and a few mini-fundraisers to help fund the effort. We invite you to join in. See you at the meeting! Bev Licata

DANA MELTON Dana is an entrepreneurial business woman and photographer. She began her studies at Louisiana State University where she majored in art education. Art was her prominent interest, however, she ultimately pursued a Flight Attendant career with Braniff International.

Her background also includes bank business development marketing officer and a sales executive for equipment leas-ing. She then joined her husband, Jim, keynote speaker and author, on the road to manage his worldwide speaking tours. Together they started the Agency for Speakers and Entertainers which represents media personalities, celebri-ties, authors, and entertainers. After thirty years, they sold their Agency and created Food Fusion Tours, a unique cooking, dining and wine-tasting experience in Provence, France. Also, as a SendOutCards Senior Manager, Dana enjoys sharing this relationship-marketing tool with others, as well as using it for her own personal and professional needs.

Leadership, communication and relationships are important to her. She is grateful for her involvement in ABWA for expanding her circle of friends in a fun and uplifting learning environment. She states, “I am so pleased to be a part of ABWA which provides scholarships to support the education of women. Learning through the experiences of others is a valued opportunity and ABWA is opening doors for me to allow this to occur.”

EDWINA DIRK Originally from Massachusetts, Edwina moved to Palm Springs almost 16 years ago. Having graduated from the New England Baptist School of Nursing, she is going into her 46th year as a Registered Nurse. Currently Edwina is a full-time Educator at California Nurses Educational Institute (CNEI) in Palm Springs. At CNEI, she holds the position of

Community Liaison, the Director of Admissions, and the Program Director for the CNA and HHA programs. One of her favorite aspects of her position is the guidance and counseling she provides to nursing students that complete the programs she oversees. She is also an assessor for Long-term care insurance. As an assessor, Edwina goes to homes or facilities, and does a written assessment for individuals to evaluate their needs. This is how she met Melissa McCaughey, her ABWA spon-sor. She is the Vice President for ACT 1 and is on the Board for Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley (ACV). Also, as an ap-proved Continuing Education (CEU) Provider, Edwina offers a variety of classes in the community, including Serenity Hospice and ACV.

Edwina love to be with people and enjoyed learning and networking with the members of our Chapter. She is the current Vice President for our Trendsetter Chapter of ABWA as well as Fundraising Co-Chairperson. With the success of our Holiday in the Desert event this past De-cember, Edwina is proud to be part of our Chapter’s efforts to give back to the community through educational scholarships.

Our Trendsetter Woman of the Year Nominees

Here are brief biographies of this year’s nominees. We will vote during our March Program.

ROSEMARY WOODWARD Rosemary became a desert resident in 1976. She had recently graduated from CSULB with a BA degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies and had accepted a position with one of the local cities as the Parks and Recreation director. Her career in recreation / fitness continued for the next 15 years until she decided being outdoors in the blazing desert sun was too hard on her Irish skin and in 1991 she studied and

earned her real estate license . She began selling homes here in the Coachella Valley and to help get her phone to ring in this new endeavor, Rosemary became involved in many networking groups. There was something different with one group whose event she attended in 2003. It was an ABWA fundraiser. She recalls the speaker was inspirational and it was FUN! It was well organized and many of the groups members were involved. Above all else, she noticed the members really liked each other. ABWA has been Rosemary’s favorite business group since she joined 16 years ago. Some of the things she has experienced and learned have been tremendously valuable and personally rewarding.

In the last couple of years, most of Rosemary’s involvement in the Chapter does not have a Board position “name”. Attached to is What she does, basically, is just be an all-around helper. She tries to engage the community and have members get involved in ABWA. Rosemary is completely honored to be nominated for Woman of The Year. She feels what she gives to the Chapter is nothing compared to what she has received from the group: friendship, inspiration and mentoring.

CONGRATULATIONS!! Dana, Edwina and Rosemary. We are proud to call you Trendsetter members.
