From the ChairmanDear Friends,

Welcome to DIRECTOR’S CHOICE! This annual program has become a fan favorite over the years for good reason. Peter

Boal’s selection of works demonstrates the breadth and depth of contemporary ballet and brings to PNB esteemed artists of the dance world along with rising stars.

PNB is unique in the large number of mixed bills it offers each season. Our audience is unique as well, supporting new work that both expands the definitions of ballet and dance and challenges viewers. You are a group of critical thinkers who always want to know more. You are passionate champions of your favorite works and choreographers, but you never hesitate to welcome the new.

PNB’s audience is the reason such a diversity of dance is performed onstage at McCaw Hall and around the world. This summer, the Company will perform in Paris, bringing with it many of the thrilling works you are seeing this season. By being part of our supportive, adventurous audience, you have made this tour possible.

I am honored to be included in this vibrant community. Thank you for all you do for PNB, and enjoy the show!

Warmest regards,

David Hadley, ChairmanPNB Board of Trustees

welcome to director’s choice. I’m often asked what criteria I use for selecting works for this annual mixed repertory program. People will say, “Isn’t everything the director’s choice?” Well, yes, but the works I choose are ones I want audiences to understand are worth their attention and exploration. It is often the story of a work or of a choreographer that I find compelling.

Ezra Thomson is a rare individual. He left a job with Orlando Ballet to come to PNB as a student. His sights were set on this company and he was willing to invest and wait. One year later he was hired as an apprentice and last year he became a soloist. He’s a true professional in every way and is rightfully and unanimously respected by his peers. During the past decade, in addition to dancing a lot, he has choreographed almost constantly, never content with his last success and always experimenting in new ways. Opportunities came through our NEXT STEP program, but we’ve also tasked him with creating an original work at the Frye Art Museum under a giant sculpture of a claw, while museum-goers milled around. He’s been part of Sculptured Dance and has created works for Spectrum Dance Theater. He’s ready for the mainstage and I’m proud to give him this opportunity. His work is personal and powerful, and we are all excited to see his premiere.

Ulysses Dove came to watch company class at New York City Ballet in 1994. On that day, as on most days, I was running from Fordham University and I was late. I entered the studio after class had begun and looked for a spare place at the barre. In a company of 90-plus dancers with a visiting choreographer watching, there was none. I had to ask Ulysses if he could move his chair further into the corner, Peter Boal

“ ”…the works I choose are ones I want audiences to understand are worth their attention and exploration.

and I stood right in front of him. I was already resigned to the fact I would not be in the new Dove piece. Turns out a little tardiness and standing on the choreographer’s toes did the trick.

There were only four dancers called to Red Angels (Darci Kistler, Wendy Whelan, Albert Evans, and me)—no covers or alternates—and our ballet master was rarely available for rehearsal. We were a small family of five finding our way through an arresting and dynamic new creation. As the level of trust and collaboration grew between us, Ulysses shared stories of the power of his mother and grandmother, the intensity of religion, and the constant presence of spirits. He knew a darker world, too, from New York at night and secrets of domestic violence that existed all around him in his childhood. These themes channeled into the creation of Red Angels. Eventually composer Richard Einhorn began attending rehearsals and introduced us to violinist Mary Rowell. Under Mary’s fierce wielding of the bow on her white electric violin, the piece came to vibrant life. It was a milestone in all five careers and a moment in NYCB’s history. Balanchine’s house of classicism and innovation had a new addition. My relationship with Ulysses was too short. He completed a second work on four of us, but just barely. AIDS stole his life days after the premiere. I think of him often and could swear a spirit hovers nearby every time this ballet is performed.

William Forsythe also came to NYCB to create a ballet called Behind the China Dogs. I was on time that day but only earned understudy status. But when a dancer and his understudy were injured, I jumped at the chance, lying just a little when I said I knew the part. Three hours a day—one on one with Bill—for a week and onstage I went. Bill is intoxicating

to work with. He’s been in our studios on a few precious occasions and I’ve seen eyes open, limbs unleash, and everything click. Credit to three stagers who bring Bill’s work to life in this program. PNB ballet master Paul Gibson staged the beguiling Slingerland Duet after having learned alongside Stephanie Arndt when it was first performed by the Company in 2015 as part of New Suite. Cyril Baldy and Ayman Harper have staged One Flat Thing, reproduced for us by incorporating Bill’s signature investment in movement and motivation.

One Flat Thing, reproduced—or “table dance,” as Bill refers to it—is both fascinating and controversial. Bill researched the fatal expedition of Robert Scott and his team of explorers as they traveled to Antarctica. Each man was dependent on another’s actions and instincts to survive. Not working as a cohesive team meant men would slip through shifting plates of ice into frigid and deadly waters below. This interdependency is recreated, as are dangerous shifting surfaces, in “table dance.” The piece offers arresting movement and wild physicality, whether you see it through the creator’s inspiration or not, but once you understand the premise of the work, you see the brilliance of Bill Forsythe.

These four works intrigue me. You may feel the same way, and you may find yourself challenged by content, music, or motion that seems beyond classical ballet’s vocabulary and norm. In my view, PNB is a perfect example of tradition and innovation, and we continue to excel at both.

The 2018 world premiere of Ezra Thomson's The Perpetual State is principally supported by Joan Fitzmaurice, Anne Holmes, Toby & Linda Warson, and H. David Kaplan.

After my father’s memorial service had concluded, I turned to my childhood friend. When we were 11 or 12, his father had passed away. I asked him whether these terrible feelings I had would get better. His response was, “No, they just become a part of you. You learn to live with them and they shape the rest of your life.” This is the perpetual state we find ourselves in when we lose someone. But there is another perpetual state, the state of love—the amazing state of love that I have and will continue to have for my wife for my entire life. We carry all these feelings with us and find ourselves in these perpetual states.

William Forsythe’s Slingerland Duet was first performed by Pacific Northwest Ballet as part of New Suite. The 2015 Pacific Northwest Ballet premiere of William Forsythe’s New Suite was generously underwritten by Jeffrey & Susan Brotman.

William Forsythe’s pas de deux from Slingerland Duet is drawn from his larger work, Slingerland (Part I), which featured music by British composer Gavin Bryars (Three Viennese Dancers, in addition

to String Quartet No. 1), stage design and film by Cara Perlman, and costume and lighting design by the choreog-rapher. Parts II, III, and IV followed in 1990 to form Slingerland (Parts I-IV), a full-length ballet in four acts. In 2000, Slingerland Duet was first presented, made up of two duets from Slingerland (Part I) and additional choreography.

Dance writer Roslyn Sulcas referred to Slingerland as “one of Forsythe’s most poetic and magical ballets, with its post-apocalyptic world of scattered stones, its supernatural fairies of the corps de ballet in tutus that look like crisp, curved potato chips [this costume recently has been redesigned by Forsythe for the pas de deux], its Beckettian tramps, and passages in which individuals suspended in

harnesses achieve the weightless dream of the dancer, yet float (to mysterious music by Gavin Bryars) in vulnerable limbo, unable to dance without gravity.”

Red Angels is a ballet of intense dramatic impact that is calculated to charge all the senses. Dressed in scarlet leotards and bathed in white and red hot light, four dancers perform with powerful athleticism to a riveting score for electric violin. Ulysses Dove commented on working with the dancers of New York City Ballet: “I wanted to deal with aspects of the Balanchine aesthetic I find appealing: the speed, legginess, the formality. As for the title, I think the dancers are angelic. And for me, the angels of the senses are red.” Composer Richard Einhorn has described Maxwell’s Demon as “a conscious attempt...to transmute American popular music into art...with a nod towards direct expression and to an audience steeped in American rock ‘n roll.”

The 2008 PNB premiere of William Forsythe’s One Flat Thing, reproduced was generously underwritten by Jeffrey & Susan Brotman.

William Forsythe’s recent One Flat Thing, reproduced caused a stir when it premiered at Pacific Northwest Ballet in March 2008. Set to a rumbling sound construction by the choreographer’s frequent collaborator, composer Thom Willems, and performed by fourteen dancers on and around twenty metal tables, One Flat Thing thrilled some, angered others, and, for some, called into question the definitions of “ballet” and “dance.”

Forsythe’s eclectic, intellectual starting point was a consideration of the risk and adventure of Robert Scott’s Antarctic expeditions, during which explorers relied on each other for survival, juxtaposed with his own interest in the idea of a “baroque machinery,” an ornamental, highly organized construct that runs like clockwork. The melding of these thoughts manifested itself in the collaborative development of a movement vocabulary involving high-speed choreography performed within the confines of a tightly spaced set of tables with the requirement that the dancers play off

William Forsythe and Ezra Thomson in rehearsal (2015). © Angela Sterling.

each other, rather than a musical score, in timing their moves. The result is a thrilling sequence of team choreography, a “baroque machinery” running dangerously close to reckless abandon.
