Between February 6 and February 10, grade 9 students from Sir John attended the annual winter camp in Dettah. The temperature was consistently below -30 for most of the week, but our robust group of grade 9s had no problem managing the challenges. The camp day itself featured snowmobiling, bannock making, fish-net pulling, fire building, fish gutting and filleting, and snare setting. Students spent most of their day working in small groups led by Dene elders and resource people, with ample opportunity to take the lead on all activities. Students were generally satisfied with Mr. Curran’s snowmobile driving, but most agreed that his bannock cooking needs some work.

SIR JOHN FRANKLIN DRAMA DEPARTMENTin Association with The Bard and 16th Century Players proudly present...

doh!PartPart

Imagine if you will that “Hamlet” was not “Hamlet” at all, but “Hamlette” a woman! Why spend four hours struggling to understand the story when five actors can get it done in

30 minutes? Elsinore has never been this whacky!

Hamlette

Shakespeare has writer’s block. Nothing inspires him. So Queen Lizzy sends Will on a whirlwind tour as he

desperately searches for material. Scotland, Venice, Egypt..star crossed lovers, surprise death, shipwrecks...something

is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark!

Grade 12 Chemistry

Student Council News

Students in Ms. Prescott’s class conduct an exploratory lab to design and determine which chemicals make the best hot or cold pack.

Our shortest calendar month of the year was filled with much excitement for our Falcons. In the first place, second semester was kickstarted on the cusp of February. Then in the spirit of Valentine’s day, SJF’s student council sold chocolate, roses and matchomatics to the student body. This, along with Fancy Friday and Pink Shirt Day, proved to be a success. Upcoming events for the student council include a talent showcase taking place on March the 8th, in the gymnasium. Come out to hear some music, watch some dance, and maybe even see a little bit of magic! The graduating class of 2017 is becoming exuberant and joyous as the end to their final high school year draws nearer. Hence, the grad council hosted a variety of activities this month, notably, Grad Sledding and Grad Hoodie day.Furthermore, our school basketball teams are preparing for the ever approaching Cager Tournament. We wish these athletes all the best in this upcoming sporting event.Similarly, SJF’s drama company is preparing for their spring showcase with the plays “Postcards from Shakespeare” and “Hamlette”. Go see the show for a night of comedy and merriment April 7th and 8th.

Finally, the new SJF Board Game Club has been established this month. Drop in Monday after school in Mr. Kowalzik’s room for an evening of fun and games!

Every Friday, Sir John Student, Avni Thenua entertains Seniors with her beautiful pianoplaying at their weekly ‘Lunch with a Bunch’.Thank you Avni!

On February 9, ELA students from Mr. Curran’s and Ms. Robson’s senior classes had a visit from Canadian author Michael Christie. Students heard stories of Michael’s life as a young father, his time as a professional skateboarder, and the experience of being raised by an agoraphobic mother. His accounts were both revealing and touching.

Michael read from his latest book, If I Fall, I Die, as well as from an essay he wrote for the New York Times. The English department would like to thank Janice Daly and John Mutford for facilitating the visit.

The SJF Scuba Club has been hard at work preparing for their upcoming Scuba Trip. On February 11 & 12, many of the club members earned their First Aid C & AED certification. Students have also had some early Sunday mornings as they prepare in the pool (and later in the classroom) to become PADI certified divers; in April club members will gain their open water certification on their field trip to Cozumel, Mexico!

SPORT SCHOOL Star of the Month

Shaheed LivingstoneShaheed has joined the Falcon Sport School this semester and hit the ground running. He is doing very well with his workouts and is really focused on mastering the form and techniques needed to excel in weightlifting. As a gymnast, Shaheed is thriving in our gymnastics training and has taken a lead in demonstrating the various skills for the rest of the class. Overall, Shaheed is engaged and focused in his training and I’m sure he will continue to thrive in this program throughout the remainder of the semesterCongratulations on being named the Falcon Sport School athlete of the month!

On February 21 & 22, Grade 8 students from Mildred Hall, Range Lake and William MacDonald visited Sir John. These visits provided the grade 8’s a snap shot of what high school looks like in action.

Many islands litter the bodies of water around the world, and some are natural and others are created by humans. The physical isolation of islands makes them attractive to adventurers and thrill seekers, and perhaps for their inhabitants they are desolate and unattractive, if and only if we know what makes islands thick or thin. Three islands are rather randomly selected across the globe to, undoubtedly, add to our reading for recreation or for inquisition, as we winter out and breathe in spring.Today, the Hashima Island, a former Japanese mining colony resembles a deserted battleship, but at one point in history it

was actually the most densely populated place on the planet. The Japanese fully populated this island with forced laborers from China and Korea during WWII. The second is the Christmas Island in Australian territory located in the Indian Ocean which is home to one of largest and most remarkable animal migrations on Earth. According to naturalist reports, every year about 120 million crabs make a month long journey out of the island’s forests to the beach in order to mate, and for most humans who have had the privilege of seeing such mating migration it is a spectacular sight. The final island represents a cluster of human creation,

and it’s on Lake Titicaca which borders Bolivia and Peru. These floating islands are woven together out of reeds by a local tribe called the Uros who are part of the indigenous peoples of Bolivia and Peru. A long time ago the tribe likely made these floating islands their home in order to avoid trouble with other local tribes. But these days the Uros still inhabit the floating islands and make their living off of fishing and tourism. The three islands hold some significance whether attractive or not, so which would you rather see or visit and why?-Mr. Obed Duru

What’s in an island?

On February 4 & 5th, our Falcons Handgames team came in second out of nine teams at the Yellowknife Catholic School Handgames Tournament. Our young men worked well together and represented themselves and the school in a respectful manner. Congratulations to Ethan Tutcho, Chase Yakeleya, Joseph Nayally, Ryan Lafferty, Yamozha Beaulieu and Kaden Moore.
