Lublin is the largest and most dynami-cally developing city in eastern Poland, a strong regional academic, cultural and

economic centre strategically located in the vicinity of the European Union’s eastern border. Lublin is the first city in the region to indicate the key sectors for the city’s economic growth and to consistently support them.

Due to the availability of highly qualified human capital, a broad offering of modern office space and relatively lower operating costs, BSS companies (in the BPO, SSC, IT, ICT, R&D etc. sectors) have been growing rapidly over the last three years on the Lublin mar-ket. The IT, banking, insurance and telecom sectors have shown particular interest in the city. Currently, companies like PKO BP, Generali, Warta and Orange have operational centers in Lublin with nearly 3,000 employ-ees altogether. Asseco, Business Solution, Data art., Genpact, Mobica and Convergys are some of the other foreign investors in these sectors that have established centres in Lublin.

Key sectors for Lublin besides BPO/SSC/IT are: food processing (represented, among others, by Lubella and Pszczółka, which have a long local presence), biotechnology (Bio-Maxima, PZ Cormay) and the automotive in-dustry (Ursus, Plastic Omnium Auto Inergy).

One of the city’s key advantages is human capital. Lublin’s numerous academic in-stitutions constitute an important factor driving its economic growth. The city has 9

institutions of higher education, attended by 67,000 students and turning out 19,000 graduates a year, which makes Lublin one of Poland’s leading cities in terms of student-to-resident ratio. With over 6,000 foreign students, Lublin is ranked second (only to Warsaw) in terms of the ratio of international to domestic students. Fields of study that meet the staffing needs of the BPO/SSC sector enjoy great interest: 3,700 of the city’s students study foreign languages; 2,000, economics and IT; 2,000, finance and accounting; and 3,000, various IT speciali-ties – this means 11,000 qualified potential employees.
