There are three main components to the SBA: a computer adaptive test, a classroom activity, and a performance task. Computer Adaptive Test: Adaptive tests (taken on the comput- er) adjust to the students ability by basing the difficulty of future questions on previous answers. An adaptive test gives a more precise estimate of a students ability than a paper/pencil test. This type of test gives a more accurate measure of the students current under- standing of the new Washington State Standards. Classroom Activity: A group lesson taught to the whole class, usually taking 20 – 30 minutes. The purpose of this lesson is to pro- vide context and to familiarize students with the topic of the upcom- ing Performance Task. Performance Task: A task that challenges students to apply their knowledge and skills in response to a real-world problem. The task is a collection of questions and activities that connect to a single theme. This task is designed to measure a students depth of under- standing, ability to answer difficult questions, and the ability to use and cite research in support of an idea. These tasks are scored by hand at the State level. The test is not timed; student will be given enough time to answer all ques- tions. A testing calendar will be included in next months newsletter with spe- cific dates for your childs grade level. Parents and students have access to sets of assessment questions aligned to the new Washington State Standards. Each Practice Test has about 30 questions, as well as an answer key. I encourage you to explore the Practice Tests with your children and have a discussion about what you find. You will find the Practice Test at the following link: http:// wa.portal.airast.org/training-tests/ 5 th Grade students will continue to take the Science portion of the MSP as- sessment in late May as well. Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your child is success- ful. Please let us know if you have any questions about these assessments or if there is anything we can do to better support your child. HELLO LWE FAMILIES! Spring is coming and we’re ready for it! February was another fun and active month, with after-school enrichment programs beginning, a classroom contest for Boxtops for Education, a family skate night and a family dance party. Check out some of the photos on our facebook page, and please feel free to contribute your own. You can post directly to the face-book page or email your digital photos and we’ll pass them on. Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/LWEPTO/ Email: [email protected] AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT. There are as many as 99 children involved in Art Wizards, Adventure Yoga, Chess Club (sponsored by LWE PTO) and the Coding Club (supported by LWE PTO). Add these kids to the many drama club students in-volved in bringing Annie to the stage, and you can see a real enthusiasm at Lynnwood Elementary for educational experiences beyond the traditional classroom. Thanks to volunteers and donors for your many contributions to the PTO as we attempt to make these opportunities available to as many students as possible. If you have an idea for an after-school class, or have seen something interesting offered elsewhere, please feel free to pass along the information to [email protected]. LUCK O’ THE LEOPARD BINGO, RAFFLE and SILENT AUCTION NIGHT. This fun event is scheduled for Friday, March 18. Doors to the school gym will open at 6 p.m. You should have received a request for contributions of items to be assembled into themed gift baskets for this event. We’ve assigned themes to each grade, but even if you have something that doesn’t quite fit the theme, feel free to send it in anyway!

Kindergarten: Fantasy and fairy tales 1st grade: Gardening is great! 2nd grade: Science is sweet! 3rd grade: Cooking with kids 4th grade: Family fun night 5th grade: Arts & crafts 6th grade: We love Sports! (Seahawks, Sounders, Storm, Reign, Mariners, Silvertips, etc.)

If you have a business and you’d like to gain more exposure, consider donating goods or services to the evening. We have over 600 students, and our families love to support local area business! If you’d like a donation form, you pick one up in the school office or download it here: Donation form GIFT BASKET ASSEMBLY. Are you creative? Do you like to assemble gift baskets? Want to check out all the cool stuff we’ve col-lected for the LUCK O’ THE LEOPARD event? Come help out on March 16th at 7 pm. Location at school is still to be determined, but if you want to stay in the loop, email us at [email protected]. QUILT RAFFLE. Mr. Sargent (Learning Support) has donated a large gorgeous quilt to help raise money for the LWE PTO. The quilt will be on display in the School Office beginning Monday, February 29. Raffle tickets are available for sale in the office from Dorothy Case for $3.00 per ticket or two for $5.00. The drawing for this quilt will be held during the LUCK O’ THE LEOPARD event. The winner does not have to be present to win. PTO BUSINESS MEETING. The date and time has been changed to March 16 from 6-7 pm in the school library. Gift basket as-sembly will take place immediately after this meeting. Childcare is available during the meeting but not during gift basket assem-bly. Best wishes for an excellent March!

How to make your own Juggling Balls

From Mrs. Sellers

LWE-PE We have been learning to juggle in PE! It is a terrific activity for eye-hand coordination. Having your own set of juggl-

ing balls will help you perfect your skills and dazzle your friends and family. Here is a step-by-step guide to follow:

Materials: For each set of 3 balls your will need

3 top fold-over baggies

6 balloons (12” are the best size)

2 cups rice

Procedure:

Cut the neck off of each balloon

Fill the baggie with 2/3 cup rice, twist end to close

Stuff the baggie into one balloon – twisted end first

Stuff this balloon into a second balloon – open end first.

Repeat for 2 more balls.

For beginning jugglers, use 3 plastic grocery bags to juggle like the scarves we used in PE!
