A Message from Administration –
We are now planning for next school year! We will soon be
coming together as a staff to carefully consider class placements
for the 2016-2017 school year. The staff at Berczy care deeply
about student needs. Years of meeting the learning needs of
children give our teachers the unique qualifications to
recommend student placement decisions. Rest assured that
placing students and balancing classes will include the best
opportunities for student achievement and well-being.
A balanced class reflects the diversity of our community and
allows the variety of interests and talents of our learners to
emerge and be appreciated. Like your family, the class unit
provides a balance of opportunities for a range of learners to
succeed through appropriate challenges. The learner develops the
feeling of belonging and the feeling that in a variety of ways
he/she makes a noticed contribution. The family, the school and
the community provide opportunities for children to socialize.
Each new school year brings opportunities to meet new friends
and expand our circle of acquaintances. School becomes more
comfortable and familiar and accordingly our potentials have
great possibilities of realization. The following are the criteria
we use to guide our placements:
Balance of Ability, Interests and Talents - all children are unique
and different. The teacher’s task of providing meaningful learning
programs is enhanced when classes are created to accommodate
instructional groupings.
Learning Style - how does the learner go about the process of
learning? What kind of environment would best suit the learner?
Social Blending - what is the best cluster of individuals to effectively
and efficiently learn? This should not be viewed as a grouping of
friends. At particular stages, some close friends learn best in separate
classes.
Do we need to know something particular about your student
that you feel we do not already know? Aside from requesting
a particular teacher, or for your child to be with a specific friend,
parent input is taken into consideration. If you have
information to share with us, it must be shared in writing by
April 15th

School Boundaries - If you are planning to move out of William Berczy’s boundaries over the
summer, please do let our office staff know as soon as possible so we can
reflect that change in our class sizes for next year. Please note that students
are required to attend the school within the boundary of the address they
live with their parents. Owning a property within the boundary is not
sufficient, the family must also reside at that address. If there is a question
about a family’s primary residence, we do investigate and might require
additional documentation from a family to determine they reside within our
boundary area.
Grade 2 - Ms. Jaatinen
We are learning about
the properties of
solids and liquids.
The grade 2's experimented with a
special soil from the planet OOBLECK.
They had to determine the properties of
the soil sample and design a space ship
that will land safely. Depending on how
you handle this special soil it can act
both as a solid and a liquid!

Time to celebrate!
I liked the cereal necklace. It was challenging and it was fun! The
cereal necklace is fun because I can eat them! ~Elizabeth
I liked throwing beanbags because I like throwing and I liked making 100th
day glasses because I
like crafts. ~Anika
I liked Ms. Berdoussis’ because we tried to write our names 100 times, tried to draw 100 houses
and tried to bounce the ball 100 times. ~Aprille
I liked Ms. Jaatinen’s activity because we made glasses. We coloured and taped. We even cut
holes. It was hard. ~Matthew
Engaging primary learning centres
as we celebrate 100th day!
FSL in Grade 8 - "La Maison D'Être" – students are practicing a particular group of verbs in the
Passé Composé (past tense) that take on the auxiliary
verb être. Students wrote their own stories
incorporating as many or all of the 17 verbs – while
writing their own narrative. These are a few examples
of the culminating task that included a poster – with
student illustrations.

MakerHub7 Newsletter - This year at Berczy there has been a major shift toward innovation
and creativity. So many new ideas have sprouted in just six months. In November, Ms.Kattis’ class came
up with an idea that would benefit our whole school, a Makerspace. A Makerspace is an area where
students can be innovative and creative, through the use of technology, robotics and building toys. To
raise money for this stimulating idea, we have been involved in running our own class business. For our
first try, we ran a very successful hot chocolate sale. As a class, we were more than happy, but we’re
still working hard to reach our goal of creating a Makerspace. We will be having more sales, as well as
seeking corporate support. Our next ground breaking venture will be a popcorn sale! We are hoping that
our next sale will outdo our last one.

Donations to our WBPS Makerspace -
Ms. Samantha Wong
Makerspace - is a space within our learning commons
where students are provided with materials that foster
creative thinking and promote school-wide inquiry. This
will be a new area within our learning commons where
students can come to be inspired. In this space we are
looking for materials such as board games, colouring
books, origami paper & building parts such as Lego
pieces. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and safe March Break!
