IMPORTANT WORK BY YOUR SESSIONAt its stated meeting on January 26, the Session spent con-siderable time on two important topics. On behalf of the Session, I wanted to share more about each of those impor-tant discussions, and how you can be an active part in these matters as we move through 2015

To Grow Christ’s Church at John Knox Presbyterian Church

This is the goal which the Session has set for our ministry as a community of faith in 2015. That goal may seem self-evident for any church to set. However, it arises from very intentional conversation around the visions and ideas that were generated last spring in our Visioning the Future Din-ners, ideas and visions which YOU shared around John Knox being an Open. Caring. Community. As we looked through all of the ideas shared last spring, the Session gravitated to four particular themes for growth. Those are:• Community• Intentional Outreach• Children• Spiritual GrowthEach of the ministry teams will be considering these themes in their own programs and goals for ministry this year, utiliz-ing many of the ideas you generated from our discussions last spring. Each Session member is also setting personal goals for the year, which they will see at the top of their agendas at each meeting. Their individual goals are tied in to these overall goals and visions, and throughout our year of service, we will share how we are doing with our goals and hold one another accountable as fellow colleagues in ministry.

What can you do? Get involved with a ministry team. Set your own personal goals for activity in the life of John Knox for 2015. Talk with the Ruling Elders about these goals and visions, and participate when we have opportunities for shared conversation as a church. Remember: you didn’t elect these men and women to do all the work; we are part-ners together in ministry in this place.

Listening to One Another - Listening for God’s Voice

Over the last few years, the Session recognizes that we have experienced a great deal of change as a church. We have witnessed new people joining our fellowship, and we have said goodbye to several people. We have experienced new ways of worship through music and the arts, and we have engaged our community in outreach in new ways. These changes can cause feelings of excitement on the one hand, anxiety on the other, and a myriad of feelings in-between.

The Session believes it is crucial for us to listen to all voic-es that are connected to our congregation, and provide a means for both joys and concerns to be shared, so that we can move forward in a healthy, constructive manner. To do that, the Session formally requested that the Committee on Ministry (COM) of Whitewater Valley Presbytery partner with us in conducting Listening Sessions with John Knox in 2015. These Listening Sessions are part of a process the COM uses with congregations to engage everyone within a local church around questions which are specific to that church’s situation. It is a process completely faciliated by the COM, and not by the church’s staff or leadership. Following these Listening Sessions, the COM provides a thorough and detailed report of all that was shared to the Session, so that it might lead the congregation in the most effective way. It is expected that these Listening Sessions would take place later this spring.

What can you do? PARTICIPATE. When you see informa-tion later regarding dates and times for these sessions, sign-up and make this a priority as a member or friend of John Knox. The only way this is helpful to us as an entire congre-gation is if EVERYONE participates, for it is predicated on all voices having a chance to speak. And, LISTEN. Listen to not only to those you agree with, but also to those who offer a different view or opinion. Realize that God speaks through all of us, not just those who speak the loudest. And trust that out of this God will lead us into a vibrant future as an Open. Caring. Community.

With a full and grateful heart,Frank

March is Disabilities Awareness Month. People with dis-abilities are part of our society. They are the folks that we call neighbor, friend, loved one, and colleague. It is this time of year that we pause and become aware that people with disabilities are people first. Their disabilities are a part of their lives, but do not define them.

In bringing awareness to our congregation, we are going to be welcoming two very special guests on Sunday, March 15. Nicholas Goldsberry and Manoj Rana will be sharing with us their stories during worship. Both men have walked amaz-ing journeys and have gifts to share with us. One man was born with a disability and the other suffered from a tragic event which left him with disabilities.

Why the need to be aware about our disability community? It is about respecting each other and learning from each other. And in the end, because we have a better under-standing of people, we hopefully will love each other a little better.

One thing I have learned over the past several years from Disability Awareness is the language that I use is very im-portant. When you are writing or speaking about people with disabilities, one should always use people-first lan-guage. Here are some “Don’ts” and Do’s” when it comes to using appropriate language:

DON’T SAY: DO SAY:

* wheelchair bound or * A person who uses a confined to a wheelchair wheelchair

* retarded person * A person with mental retardation

* the blind * A person who is blind or with a vision disability

WOMEN’S RETREATSATURDAY MARCH 21 - 9am-12pm

DISCOVERING YOUR SPIRITUAL WORDA growing spiritual practice is that of choosing one word to focus on, pray about, and live by during the year. During this retreat, you will be introduced to the concept of choosing your spiritual word, participate in a guided reflection exer-cise, and have the opportunity to explore your chosen word using artistic expression. Join this journey of discovery as you navigate what God is inviting you to be, do or grow to-ward. Our guest retreat leader is spiritual director, Beverly Gallagher. A sign-up sheet will be posted at the end of Feb-ruary. If you have any questions, please see Lisa Crismore.

* suffers a hearing loss, deaf * A person who is deaf or with a hearing disability

* afflicted with MS * A person who has multiple sclerosis

* autistic * A person who has autism

* a disabled person, handicapped * A person with a disability

* dumb, mute * A person who is unable to speak

I want to thank the Gillespie family for bringing Disability Awareness to our attention. This is something that is very dear to their hearts. I am thankful that it is something that has become dear to our hearts as well.

Blessings,Lisa

TIDINGS DEADLINEArticles for the APRIL 2015 issue of the John Knox Tidings are due by THURSDAY, MARCH 19th. The preferred way to turn in your articles is to email them directly to the editor: [email protected] or place them in the TIDINGS mailbox in the Church Office.

Our prayers are with Kit Swigart and her family on the death of her husband, Darryl, who died February 5. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, February 28, at 2 p.m. at John Knox Presbyterian Church, with visitation from 12 to 2.

IN SYMPATHY

THANK YOU NOTES

Thank you for all of your prayers and concerns for Jerry and our family during the past 8 months. Jerry continues to make progress every day. We are looking forward to the time when we can walk through the John Knox doors and greet out Church Family face to face. Also, thank you for the countless Happy Birthday wishes Jerry received. Jerry stayed busy opening and reading all the wonderful messag-es. We thank you! Jerry, Mary and Andrew Carter

Thank you so much for all your care and concern when I lost my son, David. It was such a devastating shock because he, seemingly, was so healthy. He and his family were enroute with friends for a special after-Christmas vacation. But it was not to be. Your love and support are appreciated at this difficult time. Judy Klencke

Thank you so much for all your prayers, comments, notes, cards, and calls during the last few months. Losing Goeh-rig’s father in late October, then his step-mother in late January has been difficult. We especially appreciate those who came to the visitations and services. Being surrounded with the love and support of our Church Family has meant a great deal to us. Goehrig and Betty Orr

FUND-RAISING REPORT

It has been four years since our last church pictorial direc-tory, and there have been many changes since then! This fall, we would like to work on another directory, including all members and friends of John Knox Presbyterian Church. A pictorial directory is one of the most helpful tools we can provide to visitors and new members of the church, so they might put faces with names and more quickly feel connect-ed to others in the church. Do you have an interest in help-ing with such a project? If so, please contact Frank Mansell (291-0308, [email protected]) in the coming weeks. Such an important resource cannot happen without your help - thank you for being open to help!

*Have you been thinking about getting more involved at JKPC, but not sure how? *Did you set a New Year’s resolution to be more active, but you are not motivated on what to do?*Think you want to help but not sure if you are equipped?Well then pray about it. Ask God for His direction for you.If you hear God’s voice and He says GMO....it does not mean grow more oranges or get moving outdoors or even gain major opportunities....it means General Mission & Outreach. If you do not hear His Voice, yet still feel led by the Spirit to serve, then there is a great opportunity for YOU at JKPC.

JOIN THE MISSION TEAM.The good news is: God does not call the equipped, He equips those that He calls. So you do not even have to trust your-self, just trust HIM.The other good news is: Mission Team only meets six (6) more times in 2015 so there are not a ton of meetings...but, there are a ton of opportunities. We have activities already planned out for the entire year, all you need to do is get involved with the activities that are the right timing for you.Our next meeting is Monday, March 9th at 7 p.m.Feel free to come and see and hear what we have planned and where YOU can fit. Please contact Ross Estabrook ([email protected]) if you have any questions or need any additional informa-tion. We look forward to serving with you!

Martin Sheen plays Tom, an irascible American doctor who comes to France to deal with the tragic loss of his son. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage “The Way of St. James” to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey. Through unexpected experiences, he discovers the difference between “the life we live and the life we choose.”
