The number 40 in the Bible is a spiritual metaphor of change. In Noah’s time, God re-created and re-established a new relationship with the world after a continuous heavy rain for forty days and forty nights. The Israelites had been disciplined for forty years in the wilderness until they went to the promised Land by God’s gracious guidance. Jesus went to the wilderness and stayed there for forty days to discern God’s will and plan for him. So we anticipate to be changed and to become a new person while journeying to Easter during the forty days of Lent. Last night, I thought about an image of a race comparing forty days to our spiritual practice. What if we join a race for forty days, what will be the prize, when we arrive at the finish line? The Spirit spoke to my soul that the prize is not what we will achieve, but what God can make a difference in us. I asked a question to myself. Is there anything inside me that I need to be changed or to become a different person through the discipline of Lent? If you haven’t decided any goal, why don’t you think about any small goal of change for your soul or body? Yes, I anticipate a change when I journey to the destination of Easter. I hope that I become a new person by giving up something or accept something to take action. As we learn from Ash Wednesday tradition, the early Christians observed Lent with a forty-day season of spiritual preparation. During this season converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. Or it was also a time when persons who had committed serious sins and had separated themselves from the community of faith were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to participation in the life of the church. In this way, the whole congregation had an opportunity to renew their faith. I would like to encourage all of us to keep this holy season as a great opportunity to make a change. Whatever it is, either your temper, health issue, or your relationships with God or people, please, set your goal of change and begin your spiritual discipline now. I pray that God will renew you during this season. We hope that we all celebrate the joy of Easter on Sunday, March 31.

Prayers of healing and comfort for several of our members recovering from recent surgeries. Betty Phillips is recovering from her shoulder surgery and complications following the surgery. She very much appreciates the meals that have been sent. Karlene Brown is at home and recovering from an emergency appendectomy. George Roth is also at home and recovering from a recent surgery. George would love get-well cards, his address is 201 Fall River Drive, Folsom, CA 95630. Please pray for comfort and peace of mind for Joyce James, Cheri Taylor, John Clune’s family, and his church family after John’s unexpected passing last month. He is greatly missed. Please continue praying for Linda Dressel who is going through chemotherapy. She and Chris Globis greatly appreciate the meals they have received from church members. Please contact Nancy Klanjac if you would like to contribute a meal. We always pray for Stan and Alma Andrus, Jewel Gilmore, Lola Morphis, Sue McGee, Bob Moore, and all of our church members and friends who may not make it to church regularly.

Do you have prayer requests? Call or email Nancy Klanjac ([email protected]; 967-5427),

so the members of our prayer chain can pray for you, or call or email the church office (961- 6631; [email protected]) to have your

requests printed in the Acorn.

♦ We owe Ben & Ellen Couch and Lynn & Gloria Phinney a HUGE, GIGANTIC thank you for their tireless hard work on the recent Rummage Sale. They spent almost all day, every day the week of the rummage sale sorting, pricing, selling, coordinating volunteers and much more. More Rummage Sale thank yous can be found on page .

♦ Joanne Cossairt wishes to thank everyone for their wonderful support at her 80th birthday celebration. Her husband, Dick, surprised her with an impromptu trip to Disneyland!

♦ As always, many thanks to Diane Sommer, Rayven Fletcher, Phyllis Martin, and Virginia Guffey who covered office duties while our secretary was on vacation.

♦ Nancy Edwards deserves a round of applause for the time, energy, and thoughtfulness she has put into creating our worship service slides to use with our new projection system AND training our volunteer operators to use it.

♦ Boy Scout Pack 215 thanks John Clune’s estate for the donation of camping and scouting items. They will put them to good use.

Happy March, everyone! Two things of note from the Trustees: New Lock/Alarm Policy for Spencer Hall

As has happened so often in the past, and continues to happen on a somewhat regular basis, the doors and/or alarm to Spencer Hall are not being locked and/or set. On several occasions, the back door to Spencer has been left unlocked, but the alarm has been set, or the doors haven’t been locked nor has the alarm been set. With individuals utilizing Spencer Hall for different reasons, and many people having a key and alarm code, it is often difficult to know who is expected to be there and who has already left, and too often assumptions are causing a breakdown in the security of the building. The Board of Trustees is drafting a new policy on locking and alarming Spencer Hall, which will be presented to Church Council on Tuesday, February 26th.

Trustees Spring Work Day

The Board of Trustees will be sponsoring the Spring Work Day on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Work days are scheduled twice a year in an effort to accomplish major clean-up or repair projects that require more attention than that of the Jiffy Fixers or Trustees themselves. Everyone is invited and welcome—there will be jobs available for individuals of all ages and capabilities! Work days are fun and satisfying and an excellent example of stewardship to Fair Oaks United Methodist Church. If you know of a project that needs completion, contact any Trustee and it will be added to the list. Be on the lookout for a signup sheet of projects available in the near future!

As always, the Board of Trustees appreciates your help and support!

Your Trustees by Renee Meyer

Hello and blessing to everyone. Our stewardship campaign is coming up in April. Please be thinking about the important place this church holds in your heart and our community and how you can help support this wonderful church and its ministries.

Below is a review of our income and expenses for January. At Church Council, Trustees reported that, given our current fiscal condition, no new improvement projects will be initiated. We will finish the projects we currently have in progress. In a couple of months, we will look again at our finances and the results of our upcoming stewardship campaign to see what steps we need to take in order to fulfill the ministries of our church.

Beginning February 21st , at 6 pm, we will have the first of this year’s six Lenten soup suppers. The last supper will be Maundy Thursday, March 28th. Everyone is invited to attend and participate in a simple meal and fellowship time. You can come to one or all of the suppers. Child care is available. As usual, volunteers are welcome. Every meal we need 2 or 3 loaves of bread, a dozen peanut butter sandwiches, and 2 large pots of yummy soup. Help setting up and cleaning up is also needed. For more information, or to volunteer, contact Kathy Glass at [email protected], 454-5335 or call the church office.

Lenten Soup Suppers, February 21 to March 28 Thursday evenings at 6 pm

Help beautify our Sanctuary on Easter Sunday by ordering Spring flowering plants now. Each plant will be full of colorful blooms. The cost is $10 per plant. Orders are due Palm Sunday, March 24. Order forms will be inserted into Sunday bulletins or you may contact the church office at 961-6631 or [email protected]. You may place your order by filling in the form and placing it, along with your payment, in the offering box on Sundays or mailing it to the church. Plants may be taken home after the 10AM Worship Service on Easter. If you wish, you may instead bring a plant of your own to place with the others on the Chancel for Easter Sunday. Label it with your name if you wish to take it home with you after worship.

Calling All Easter Candy Donators, Egg Stuffers, Egg Hiders, and Hunt Hosts! Our annual Easter Egg Hunt is always a fun event but we need lots of volunteers to make it happen! Wrapped candy may be dropped off at the church office until Palm Sunday, March 24. We will stuff the eggs the week of March 25 (exact day and time to be announced). On Easter Sunday morning, March 31, we will need volunteers to hide the eggs. The hunt begins at 9:30 am after the first service and before the second service. It is always helpful to have 2 or 3 volunteers to organize the kids by age, open the gates to begin the hunt, and collect empty eggshells afterwards. Please contact the church office if you would like to volunteer for any of these fun jobs or if you would like to sign up as the Hunt Coordinator Extraordinaire!

STUDENTS WORSHIPING

AN AWESOME GOD

‘Let the children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’

Matthew 19.14 Join us on Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:15 pm as we gather together for fun and activities, a few snacks, and some time to explore how God is active in our lives. March will be an exciting month as we serve ice cream and entertain our church at our Ice Cream Social and Talent Show to raise money for our Summer Mission Trip in San Francisco. We will also be planning for our upcoming 30 Hour Famine to raise funds for World Vision and our Youth Worship Service in April. During the month of February, we gathered together to explore what it means to witness, to be witness to our Creator, to bear witness to our Redeemer, and to live as witnesses to the works of our Sustainer. This month we will explore what it means to testify to what we have witnessed. What does it mean to "testify"? "Testify" is a "courtroom term." In court, when people are called to "testify" what are they called upon to tell? Only what they have seen or heard and what they know to be true. It’s the same for us. We are called on to tell people what we have seen Jesus do in our lives and what we have heard and know to be true about him. “Get up and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint

you to serve and testify to the things in which you have seen me” Acts of the Apostles 26.16

UPCOMING EVENTS IN 2013 APRIL 26-27, 2013 World Vision’s 30HF

Why would students be willing to give their time and also give up eating for 30 hours? It’s simple: they will go without food so that others can eat. We do the 30 Hour Famine to grow closer together by working side-by-side toward a common goal. World Vision is a Christian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Plan on attending our SWAG Ice Cream Social and Talent Show. The best talent from our youth and church members will be performing. It will be deliciously fun and all funds raised

will go toward the SWAG Urban Mission Trip this summer.

This summer our youth will be traveling to San Francisco to work with Center for Student Missions and indigenous organizations that operate on the front lines of urban ministry to witness to unique issues and problems that city dwellers face and what God is doing to foster and further His Kingdom in the city. We will become part of the solutions for the city offering our time, energy and sweat as we support these "ministry sites."

By participating in urban ministries, lives change as we come to re-examine our life priorities in light of what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a hurting world. We’ll return home with new eyes — sensitized to see the ethnic diversity and pockets of poverty that escaped our notice previously. We’ll also return home with a new vision for how our faith can impact our home life and community at large.

CSM Mission statement: To provide an effective urban ministry experience that transforms lives, influences churches and communities, and honors Christ.

Please Support Us by Coming to Our Ice Cream Social

In addition, we will be auctioning off three youth work vouchers. Our youth along with our youth director will come to your home to help in the yard, wash your cars, clean your house, whatever we can do to help you out. We will also have a silent auction for three youth dinners. Our youth will prepare a dinner and deliver it to your home. Don’t miss out!!! Tickets will be available in advance after church service or in the office. Non-dairy options will be provided.

For more information contact our Youth Director - Bob Gilberg [email protected] 530-559-2035

We had a very successful rummage sale. The total received that weekend was $8,000.00. However, $100 of that was a counterfeit $100 bill that the bank took. Virginia Grabbe very generously donated $100 to make up for the deficit. We want to thank all those who worked so hard to make this a success. The many people that spent hours setting up and pricing, collecting items that were being donated and delivering them to the church, working during the sale days and helping to clean up on Saturday. Thank you to Kathy Glass for bringing lunch to all the workers on Saturday. Thanks to Lynn and Gloria Phinney (our co-chairs) who took over setting up and selling the items in Wesley Hall (books and children’s items). Thanks to Nancy and Ed Klanjac who took over the clothing in Potter and handled the setting up and selling of all the clothing. Thanks to Daniel Palu, Helena Hurst, Barbara Sims, Ada Raney, Josh Klanjac, Mike (the Phinney’s grandson), Tom Wold, Jeff Couch, John and Teri Himes, Diane Sommer, Phyllis Martin, Mary Ellen Milne, May Joy and Bob Gilberg, Youngjae Park, Roy and Gay Anderson, Mary White, Nancy Edwards, Ruby and Wayde Wicker, Adrienne Nolan, Elaine Bach, Bill Floyd, Rosanne Stephenson, Betty Steinbach, John Clune , Joanne Cossairt, Marcy McCollum, Judy Shearer, Margo Williams, Norma and Roger Bennett, Betty Phillips (who also took care of all the advertising), Alisia Jones, Lyn Gras, Claudia Ferguson, Dick and Sue Easterbrook, the Doty family, Carol Spiker, and Laurel Jensen. We also had two parents from the Little Methodist School that helped set up. If we forgot anyone, we apologize. Some of our lists got misplaced so have tried to go by memory.

Thanks everyone so much!

With our new projection system up and running on Sunday mornings, we have phased out the announcement time at the beginning of worship. So, how can you stay up-to-date with upcoming events, outreach ministries, and volunteer opportunities? And how can you let others know about upcoming events, outreach ministries, and volunteer opportunities that your committee is planning?

Sunday Morning Announcement Slide Show To be included in the announcement slide show before worship, please contact the church office with your announcement information by Thursday at 9 am. The slide show begins at 9:50 am and runs on a continuous loop until worship begins at 10 am. The information on the announcement slides is kept brief to maximize font size and readability. Think in terms of the 4 Ws: Who, What, Where, and When.

Sunday Bulletin Printed Announcements As time goes on, fewer announcements will be printed in the bulletin on Sunday morning. Printed announcements include slightly more information than the announcement slide shows but space is limited. This information also needs to be provided to the church office by Thursday at 9 am.

Sunday Verbal Announcements If you have an announcement that you feel is urgent or time-sensitive or really needs to be spoken out loud on Sunday morning, please contact the church office or Pastor Jeong to discuss.

Monthly Acorn Newsletter Our monthly newsletter is called the Acorn and is available on our website. Paper copies are available in the Narthex, the Library, and Spencer. The Acorn is where we can provide a lot of detailed information and even photos of our various events and ministries. The deadline to submit an article for the Acorn is the third Monday of the current month to be included in the next month’s issue. (For topics that arise at Church Council meetings on the fourth Tuesday of the month, articles need to be submitted by 9 am on the day after the Church Council meeting.)

The focus of the Women’s Support Group is to identify hurts, habits or hang-ups that hinder our being in relationship with God. Also, to experience the benefit of fellowship that comes from being in a small group. The Women’s Support Group meets every other Monday in the Library from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Please contact Laurel Jensen for more information at [email protected] or call (916) 903-6061.

Book Club

Join us on Monday, March 18th at noon in the church library as we discuss The Long Way Home by James R. Schultz--A Pacific Odyssey of World War II. In the forward, Raymond Philip Shafer, former Governor of Pennsylvania, states “His stories and anecdotes, drawn from the day to day lives of the officers and crew of the ships on which he served held my interest from start to finish, recalling my own tour of duty in the South Pacific. His narrative captures the experience and emotions of many of us who served in the Pacific theater of World War II. He describes the excitement, the boredom, the humor and fears of life at sea in a world at war.” What makes this book unique? The author is Linda Robinson’s father. Linda has copies available to read for the discussion. We also have copies in the church library shelved in Biography/Memoirs. Bring your lunch and join in our lively discussion!

Pinochle

Lynn and Gloria Phinney will host pinochle on Friday, March 8th at 6:30 pm in the church Sanctuary. Please come out to the church’s monthly game night. Our “professional” pinochle players are more than happy to teach newcomers the game!

Fair Oaks United Methodist Church Business Directory

Q: Why do we have a business directory in a church newsletter?

A: The donations provided by the above businesses help offset the cost of publishing a monthly newsletter.

Q: Who are the people behind these businesses? A: They are members or regular attendees who consider

FOUMC their church home and wish to share their business talents with their church family.

Q: Can I be listed in the business directory each month? A: Yes! Contact the church office at 961-6631 or

[email protected] to learn more.
