The Lupa di Roma Lodge annually honour a woman in the community and present her with their Donna Dell’Anno award recognizing the recipient’s professional achievement, leadership and community involvement (both Italian and Canadian) as well as their charitable works.

The Lupa’s 2013 honouree is Alfina Grande. The St. Mary’s Academy teacher received the award at a March 3rd luncheon hosted by the Lupa di Roma in correlation with International Women’s Day on March 8. Alfina’s first reaction was:“I’m humbled and honoured

by this recognition. I know many other women who would deserve this kind of award; I’m thinking,in particular,of all the mothers who came from Italy, with no knowledge whatsoever of the English language, but with a strong determination to build a better future for their children.”

Lupa di Roma President Tonina Fiorentino commented“Alfina met all these requirements; in fact, she is a role model for all women and men who want to make a positive difference in our community and the wider society’;she truly encompasses every

component for which this award can be presented.”

Alfina currently serves as first vice-president of the Italian Canadian League of Manitoba; two years ago she represented the ICLM at the National Congress of Italian Canadians at the organization’s biannual meeting in Montreal. In 2001, the ICLM nominated Alfina to serve on the Manitoba Ethno-Cultural Advisory and Advocacy Council, where she provided advice and expertise to the government on important issues within the ethnic communities in Manitoba...Continued on page 2

Currently, the Italian Canadian League of Manitoba Inc.. (ICLMI) is launching several new initiatives, one of which is the commitment to explore the possibility of building of a long term care facility. “It has been recognized that the Italian community is the only community of its size that does not have a long term care facility; we must set the machinery in motion to pursue this noble objective”, said ICLMI’s President Erminio Caligiuri. To this effect, at the January 2013 meeting, League’s representatives and delegates approved the formation of an ad hoc fact-finding committee.

Over the next six months, this Committee, chaired by Mr. Charles Scherbo, will look into the various possibilities for our community and will analyze the different options available with respect to size and operating structure of personal care homes.

The committee will be guided by the following Terms of Reference:

1. Review the current Provincial legislation including existing and emerging programming to address the needs of the elderly in the Province;

2. Investigate the various models of levels of care for our elderly including not-for-profit and for profit, and concomitant funding formulas;

3. Determine the Italian community desire and willingness to support a personal care centre for our community and the size and scope of such a facility;

4. Confirm that the proposed location on the property of the Centro Caboto is the most suitable for such a facility and configure the project in such a way that it complements the Centro and does not negatively impact the available parking space for the Centro;

5. Prepare a funding proposal for League approval and for submission to the Province of Manitoba;

6. Perform any other tasks and make any other recommendations that the committee feels is in the best interest of the Italian community to advance personal care programs for our seniors.

M.B.A, Owner, P.M. Associates; Ted Nocita, P. Eng., Principal, ManShield Construction; Tom De Mardi, Owner, Mondo Foods; Erminio Caligiuri, President, ICLMI.“The committee has already had its first very successful meeting and has very quickly started to carry out its mandate”, said Committee Chair, Charles Sherbo.

Over the past several years many individuals in our community have made representation to the League to move on with such an initiative, given that our community is aging, and that it is becoming much more difficult for families to take care of their elderly at home, as it was done in the past.

For the League and our Italian community the construction of a personal care facility would be the largest undertaking ever attempted and strong community support needs to be demoonstrated early, if we are to move forward together.

In early 2006, the Italian Canadian League of Manitoba Inc. (ICLMI), recognizing the need to facilitate communications within the Italian community, entered into a collaborative agreement with Sun Media to publish a monthly newspaper. It was agreed that the ICLMI would provide all the informational content (articles, events, news, etc.), and Sun Media, while doing the layout and printing the paper free of charge, would sell the advertisements and receive all the revenues therein. The first issue of the paper was pubblished exactly seven years ago

in March 2006 with the name “Il Sole Italiano”.

This partnership ended with the publication of the May 2008 issue when Sun Media pulled out citing advertisement revenues lower than expected.

Shortly after, the ICLMI decided to continue publishing independently and in September 2008 the first in-house-produced issue of the paper was published with a slightly new name “Il Nuovo Sole”.

Since that date, the League has assumed full responsibility for the coordination and production of the paper.

Italian-born, mezzo-soprano Tiziana Carraro will be starring in Manitoba Opera’s Aida at the Centennial Concert Hall, April 13, 16, and 19. She will be singing the role of Amneris, the Egyptian princess, in her Manitoba Opera debut.

Since her debut at the Festival della Valle d’Itria of Martina Franca in 1991, Ms. Carraro has been performing in major Italian and international opera houses and theatres including Arena di Verona, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv and the Verdi Festival in Busseto, the Avenches Opera Festival, the prestigious Strasbourg Music Festival, and London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Besides Amneris, Ms. Carraro’s other roles include Acuzena (Il Trovatore), Maddalena (Rigoletto), Carmen, Elisabetta (Maria Stuarda), and Eboli (Don Carlos). She also often sings religious music including works by Mozart, Verdi, Vivaldi, and Beethoven.

Tiziana Carraro was appointed the Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 2011.

Aida will close Manitoba Opera’s 40th season. One of the great Italian composer’s most famous works, Verdi’s Aida has not been performed in Winnipeg for over a decade. This grand opera features impassioned arias, surging choruses, and exhilarating orchestral music that masterfully balances pomp and pageantry with a deeply moving personal tragedy.

The unforgettable tale of love and duty in the land of the Pharaohs will also star Canadian-born soprano, Michele Capalbo in the title role; Costa-Rican tenor, Rafael Davila, making his Manitoba Opera debut as Radames, as well as Phillip Ens as Ramfis, and Gregory Dahl as Amonasro.

Aida will be sung in Italian with projected English translations.

Alfina Grande continued from page 1...“Alfina is a very effective and dependable Board member. She is passionate about her community and a model volunteer. Her persistent drive and result-oriented approach to the task at hand are always constructive and inspiring,” said Erminio Caligiuri, president of the ICLM. “I’m thrilled that she has been chosen and celebrated as the 2013 Donna dell’Anno.”

Grande, who teaches second languages at St. Mary’s Academy, is fluent in English, Italian, Spanish and French. She also has taught Italian as a second language to adults through classes offered by the Dante Alighieri Cultural Society, as well as serving as a teacher and director of the Dante’s Saturday morning program and summer youth camps.

Alfina attends many charity and fundraising events along with her husband Joe. The Grande’s financial contributions to fundraisers for Italian and Canadian organizations

are outdone only by their passion to host fundraisers for organizations and charities they feel passionate about. The Grandes are always coming up with fun and creative charitable events hosted at their Mona Lisa restaurant.

In her acceptance speech, Alfina thanked a wide cross section of friends, supporters, mentors, colleagues and, above all, she credited all her family members for their positive influence and input in making her the strong and successful woman that she is. And in her closing remarks, she gave her husband an important reminder.

”Joe, I know you are the one who wears the pants in the family, but don’t forget I’m the one who chooses the colour.” Congratulazioni vivissime,Alfina,a te e tutta la tua famiglia!

Le Nostre Storie

Il 17 gennaio scorso si è svolta la prima di una seconda serie di chiacchierate alla quale era stata invitata la Professoressa Cristina Povoledo. Qui di seguito riportiamo testualmente il suo interessantissimo racconto:

Ringrazio Mario per avermi invitata a far parte di questa tavola rotonda che credo sia la prima di una serie di chiacchierate. Mi ha chiesto di raccontare la mia storia,le mie esperienze buone e meno buone da italiana all’estero a Winnipeg, ed eccomi qui.

Mi chiamo Cristina Povoledo,i nuovi arrivati dall’Italia non mi conoscono ma penso che molti di voi mi conosciate.

Sono nata a Pallanza sul lago Maggiore dove ci torno ogni anno e sono arrivata a Winnipeg 45 anni fa.Perche’a Winnipeg?

Mio marito, Veneziano, laureato a Padova in medicin aveva deciso dopo la laurea di non esercitare la professione di medico ma di dedicasi alla ricerca scientifica.

E’ arrivato a Pallanza nel 1957 e come biologo e limnologo, ha iniziato a lavorare all’istituto italiano di idrobiologia Marco DeMarchi che si occupava e tuttora si occupa dell ‘inquinamento delle acque dolci. Li ci siamo conosciuti e sposati. Attarverso congressi e pubblicazioni aveva conosciuto diversi colleghi tra i quali anche il dottor Jack Vallentyne con il quale e’ diventato molto amico. Tra l’altro il Dottor Vallentyne ha trascorso il suo anno Sabbatico nel 1965 con la sua famiglia lavorando all’ istituto di Pallanza e in precedenza nel

1962 aveva invitato mio marito per un periodo di insegnamento come visiting professor alla Cornel University a Ithaca New York dove lui lavorava.

Tutto questo per dirvi che c’era un legame di collaborazione e amicizia tra loro due.

Nel 1967 il dottor Vallentyne, canadese, aveva lasciato gli Stati Uniti, si era trasferito a Winnipeg perche’chiamato dal governo federale canadese che stava per aprire il Fresh Water Institute un istituto di ricerche sulle acque dolci. Naturalmente per avviare un istituto unico in Canada e di una certa importanze visto tutti i laghi disseminati in tutto il territorio canadese,il dottor Vallentyne aveva bisogno dell’aiuto di ricercatori e scienziati specializziati in quel campo e quando ha chiesto a mio marito di partecipare alla realizzazione di questo prestigioso e moderno istituto mio mario non ha esitato ed ha accettato perche’ voleva sia mettere a disposizione le sue esperienze di lavoro sia arricchire il suo patrimonio scientifico a contatto con ricercatori nuovi e di diversi paesi. Naturalmente questa sua decisione e’ stata presa in perfetta armonia con me perche’ la durata della nostra permanenza in Canada non avrebbe dovuto superare i tre anni. Quindi siamo partiti noi due e i nostri quattro figli. Il piu picciolo aveva otto mesi, la piu’ grande sei anni.

Una serie di circostanze e fattori ha ritardato il nostro rientro in Italia ed io ora sono ancora qui dopo 45 anni a fare la pendolare tra il Canada e l’Italia.Le mie due figlie Elisabetta e Francecasono tornate a

vivere in Italia circa 20 fa. Anche se l’inizio della nostra permanenza non e’ stato facile, devo riconoscere che siamo stati particolarmente fortunati come emigranti. Al nostro arrivo c ‘era un impiegato dell’ istituto che ci aspettava all’aeroporto. Ci ha portati in un motel, dove abbiamo trovato sul tavolo una torta con la bandiera canadese e quella italiana, il giorno dopo una macchina con un agente immobiliare ci aspettave alla porta del motel e abbiamo subito avuto l’opportunita’ di vedere, valutare cercare casa. La casa l’abbiamo trovata subito. Piaceva in modo particolare a nostra figlia Elisabetta perche’ in giardino c’era un’ altalena e uno scivolo percio’ per lei non c’era casa migliore. Naturalmente era piaciuta anche a mio marito , a me e ai fratellini ma non ci abbiamo pensato molto prima di comprarla perche’ tanto sarebbe stata casa nostra solo per tre anni. Infatti ci abito ancora. Siamo arrivati a Winnipeg il 21 agosto e il primo settembre entravamo nella nostra casa in Ash street. E qui sono iniziati i nostri guai. Un residente di Ash aveva promesso solennemente a un suo zio, che era in punto di morte, che avrebbe fatto di tutto per mantenere la parte della strada a nord di Academemy road la strada piu’ esclusiva e anglosassone di Winnipeg. Improvvisamente si e’ visto arrivare una famiglia con quattro bambini e per di piu’ italiana. Allora gli italiani erano subito sospettati di mafia e per questo paladino della purezza dell’esclusivita’ della razza e’ stato un duro colpo. Anche gli altri vicini ci hanno osservato per circa un anno e dopo aver visto che non giravano attorno alla nostra casa face sospette e che la nostra vita era piu ‘che controllabile alla fine si sono avvicinati e la prima cosa che mi hanno detto e ‘stata “ chissa che buona pizza sa fare lei?” Io sono negata per la cucina infatti mia figlia Francesca ha pubblicato da poco un libro intitolato “Oh, mio Dio, e l’ora di cena!”dicendomi “che nessuno si offenda” e la pizza non l ‘avevo mai fatta. Ho provato e riprovato ed infine ho scoperto che era in vendiata una scatola dello Chef-Boyardee con inclusi tutti gli ingredienti per fare la pizza. Ho usato quella,forse ho aggiunto un po’ di prosciutto e qualche oliva in piu’ e poi ho invitato

i vicini di casa che si sono complimentati moltissimo dicendo che non avevano mai mangiato una pizza cosi buona. Da allora i vicini si sono alternati, con alcuni siamo diventati buoni amici,con altri solo buoni conoscenti e io vivo ancora da allora nella stessa casa, nella stessa strada.

Non e’ stato facile nei primi tempi ambientarsi a questo nuovo mondo a ,questa nuova terra, a me mancavano soprattutto la mia famiglia, la mia mamma, le mie sorelle, gli amici, poi poco per volta le cose sono migliorate. I nostri figli hanno cominciato a frequentare le scuole locali, si sono inseriti facilmente in questa nuova societa’, hanno imparato molto rapidamente e senza alcuna difficolta’ la lingua inglese e in pocchisimo tempo si sono sentiti a loro agio in questo ambiente a parte la nostalgia sempre molto intensa della nonna e delle zie. Per fortuna tornavamo in Italia quasi ogni estate. Mio marito ha iniziato subito dopo il nostro arrivo le sue ricerce sulle acque dolci e da buono scienziato era molto spesso immerso completamente e solamente nel suo lavoro. Per me e’ stato piuttosto difficile mandare avanti una famiglia numerosa in una citta’ dove tutto mi era nuovo, la lingua, le case, le unita’ di misura (quanto prosciutto cotto ho dovuto mangiare per i miei errori nel comprare a pounds pensando che fossero etti). Poi poco alla volta mi sono ben inserita in questa nuova societa’, ho conosciuto i genitori degli amici dei mei figli, alcuni italiani venuti come noi da poco a Winnipeg, e nel 1970 ho iniziate a collaborare con la societa Dante Alighieri insegnando

corsi d’italiano ad adulti e occupandomi come direttrice del programma dei corsi d’italiano per bambini. Nel 1977 con l’aiuto di alcuni volonterosi membri della comunita’ italiana siamo riusciti ad inserire l’insegnamento della lingua italiana nel piano di studi della scuola pubblica canadese e ho insegnato a livello di scuola media superiore per otto anni. Nello stesso anno e cioe’ nel 1977 e’ iniziata la mia carriera come lettrice di lingua e cultura italiana all’ universita’ del Manitoba nel dipartimento di Francese e Spagnolo.

Ho insegnato per alcuni anni solo un corso per pricipianti, e poi man mano , visti i risultati e il numero sempre crescente degli studenti, i corsi sono diventati tre e quasi automaticamente e’ nata l’esigenza di trasformare i tre corsi in un programma Minor. Gli studenti interessati hanno presentato una richiesta al Rettore dell’ Universita’che pero’ voleva una prova concreta che la comunita’ italiana fosse veramente interessata alla realizzazione di tale programma e la lega italo canadese del Manitoba ha formato immediatamente un comitato raccolta fondi per questo scopo. . La comunita’ italiana ha risposto a questo appello mobilitandosi con una generosita’ veramente genuina e incoraggiante a livello sia individuale che asocciativo (vedi Dante Alighieri, Figli d’Italia, club siciliano etc) e in questo modo si e’ ottenuto il programma desiderato e il nome del dipartimento e’ cambiato in dipartimento di Francese, Spagnolo e Italiano dove io ho insegnato per 29 anni.

Per diversi anni ho

anche tenuto un corso estivo in Italia per gli studenti dell’ universita’, corso con esame ed eventuale credito ed e’stata per me e per gli studenti un’ esperienza interessantissima.

Ora il programma d`italiano contina offrendo anche il major.

Mio marito dal 1978 al 1995 e’ stato vice console onorario d’Italia per la provincia del Manitoba ed io gli ho fatto da segretaria puntuale ed attiva per tutti questi anni.

Ora io sono in pensione faccio la nonna passo molto piu’ tempo in Italia, probabliment presto mi trasferiro’ permanentemente in Italia ma parte del mio cuore rimarra’ a Winnipeg perche’ questi 45 anni di vita passati qui sono stati anni importanti per me, pieni di bei ricordi, di belle persone incontrate e difficilmente potro’ dimenticare cose e fatti che sono accaduti in questo arco di tempo. Ho raccontato quello che ho fatto, ho raggiunto molti obiettivi, sono contenta di tutte le cose positive che sono riuscita ad ottenere in questi anni di vita a Winnipeg,ma devo assolutamente riconoscere che nel mio lavoro e nei miei programmi sono sempre stata appoggiata dalla comunita’ italiana che mi ha incoraggiata, consigliata, spinta a raggiungere quello che mi ero prefissa.

Anche nei momenti piu’ difficili e scoraggianti sapevo che alle mie spalle c’era la cominuta’ italiana. Ai nuovi arrivati questo e’ il mio consiglio: sappiate che anche per voi per qualsiasi bisogno abbiate ci saremo sempre noi veterani alle vostre spalle, pronti a darvi una mano.

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. Plans for Folklorama 2013 are well underway. This year, the Italian pavilion will run during the second week of the Festival, that is: August 7-11. Of course, the location continues to be the Caboto Centre, 1055 Wilkes Avenue.

Pavilion Coordinator Teresa Mariani, who will be chairing the Organizing Committee, is still looking for coordinators of a number of departments, including Mercato, Cultural Displays, and Entertainment. You get to meet people from all kinds of cultures and walks of life. There is so much to learn through this wonderful annual festival. Once the Chairs of the various subcommittees are in place, the planning process kicks in and volunteers are sought, recruited and trained for the various aspects of the

In CucinaCuddhura di PasquaLa cuddhura, è un tipico dolce siciliano e calabrese, di derivazione ortodossa, che veniva e viene tutt’ora preparato nel periodo pasquale. Tempo fa, durante il periodo della Quaresima, si osservava una grande moderazione alimentare, che escludeva dalle tavole carne, uova e formaggi, ma con l’arrivo della settimana santa le privazioni terminavano, e le uova erano un alimento particolarmente utilizzato per la preparazione dei dolci pasquali. In Sicilia e Calabria, il dolce pasquale più diffuso è ancora oggi la “cuddhura”, “cudduraci”, “cuzzupa”, o “Cuddureddi cull’ovu ‘i Pasca”, un grosso dolce di forma circolare, con incorporato un numero variabile, ma sempre dispari, di uova col guscio, che le giovani donne usavano regalare ai fidanzati nel giorno della Resurrezione. Si portavano in Chiesa il Sabato Santo perché fossero benedette, e poi si mangiavano. Si chiamano anche “campanari” perchè si dovevano mangiare solo dopo che avevano suonato le campane di Pasqua.Ma la forma della cuddhura non è solo circolare: se ne preparano anche a forma di “campanaru” (campanile) per risuonare le campane al Cristo risorto, a forma di “panarieddu” (cestino) per augurare abbondanza, oppure di “gadduzzu” (galletto o colomba) per i ragazzi, di “pupa” (bambola) per le ragazze, e a “cuore” per i propri amati.

Ingredienti per l’impastoFarina: 1kgZucchero: 300 grBurro fuso tiepido: 150 grUova medie: 5Latte tiepido: 1 bicchiereLievito per dolci: 2 bustine (Si puo’ sostituire 1 di lievito e 1 di ammoniaca per dolci)Vaniglina: 1 bustinaLa buccia grattugiata: 1 limoneUova sode: q.b.

Ingredienti per decorareCodetta o palline arcobaleno q.b.Uova: 1 sbattuto per spennellare

Ingredienti per la glassaUova: 1 albumeZucchero: 10-12 cucchiaiLimoni succo: 1-2 cucchiai

PreparazionePer preparare la “cuddhura cull’ova” mettete la farina in un recipente capiente e mescolatela con il latte tiepido, lo zucchero e il lievito , quindi aggiungete il burro. La vaniglina, e la buccia grattugiata di un limone , aggiungete anche le uova e impastate .Lavorate molto bene l’impasto in modo da amalgamare bene gli ingredienti (potete usare anche il robot da cucina); la consistenza dell’impasto non sarà dura, anzi, risulterà abbastanza morbida . Modellate la “cuddhura” direttamente sulla carta forno, secondo i soggetti da voi scelti; un cuore, un cestino, una campana, una bambola, un galletto o una corolla intrecciata .Sulla “cuddhura” posizionate, con una leggera pressione sulla pasta, una o più uova col guscio sodo (sempre in numero dispari) , che bloccherete sul dolce con dei bastoncini di pasta a modo di croce . Adagiate la cuddhura sulla leccarda del forno foderata con carta forno. A questo punto si puo’ spennellare con dell’uovo sbattuto , e guarnitela con dei semi di papavero, sesamo o con degli zuccherini colorati , e cuocetela a 180°-200° per circa 35-40 minuti, fino a quando diventerà dorata. Se volete glassare la vostra cuddhura, infornatela senza spennellerla con l’uovo sbattuto, e preparate una glassa in questo modo: montate a neve un bianco d’uovo, aggiungete poi 10-12 cucchiai di zucchero semolato, un cucchiaio alla volta e lentamente, continuando a sbattere con lo sbattitore. Aggiungete poi poco alla volta uno o due cucchiai di succo di limone, sempre sbattendo; il composto deve risultare molto denso e staccarsi pesantemente dal cucchiaio. Appena sfornerete la cuddura, sulla stessa leccarda dove l’avete cotta, ricopritela con la glassa preparata e cospargetela di zuccherini colorati , lasciatela raffreddare e poi buona degustazione!

ConsiglioSe volete, invece di preparare un’unica cuddhura, dividendo l’impasto in 4 parti uguali, potrete sagomare 4 soggetti più piccoli, magari sbizzarrendovi nel preparare le diverse forme sopra menzionate. Ricordatevi sempre di mettere da parte un po’ di pasta per formare le croci che terranno ferme le uova che decorano le coddhure.

The Travel Bug - CUBA, mon amour!

By Adriana Lombardini It may sound like an “ osé” statement, but it really isn’t. I left a peace of my heart in Cayo Santa Maria, with its pristine and incredible turquoise sea, with the powdery white sand of the Memories Azul beaches and with the people at the resort that have worked so hard to make the group holiday truly unforgettable. The group from the Centro Caboto 55 plus in cooperation with the Gruppo Sportivo Italiano, whose president, Mario Perrino has been our Bocce tournament organizer and always a great help with the incredible people that year after year have been following us in a series of amazing winter escapes.

This is not “any” group, this is almost like a family reunion any

time we embark in a new adventure, with the protecting members such as Erminio who took the 11 ladies to Church ( 65 kilometers away!) while some of us went to Havana for two days, helped Mario with the bocce and always been there if anyone needed any help. And Angela, who we have now promoted our official nurse, always ready to cure someone in need, not just our group! Thanks to all of you for being there with me, thanks for the lovely flowers that Concetta presented me on your behalf and the generous gift you gave me. I was so overwhelmed by her and Mario’s words that I

forgot to thank them and all of you. Please accept it now!

Mr Marco Mazzucchelli, the general manager of the Memories Hotels, the Azul, where we stayed, and the Paraiso, attached to one another with dining privileges in both hotels, has made any possible efforts way beyond the call of his duty to make us feel welcomed, royally looked after and he addressed any single issue we might have had. The hotels were full to capacity, over 2,900 people and yet the ever-present Marco found the time to ensure that we had dancers to welcome us in the first welcome dinner

he helped me to organize in the private conference room at the Paraiso side of the hotel, that we had all the Italian food we like, from parmigiano to prosciutto, 2 delicious lobster dinners just for us, private chefs and private staff, a Valentine day celebration with flowers, special cocktails and lovely singers. He made sure we enjoyed, that we did not have to stand in line in crowded buffet restaurants too often, that we could listen to excellent music just for us and dance if we wanted. And some of us wanted…particularly with the gorgeous singer of our farewell dinner…

It would certainly be difficult not to go back sometime in the future!

Next year plans are in the making for some other winter break destination; do not miss the plane!

Il 63° Festival della canzone italiana di Sanremo, si è concluso con la vittoria di Marco Mengoni. Già vincitore di X Factor, il cantante ha portato sul palco dell’Ariston il brano L’essenziale, con il quale ha trionfato, superando gli altri due finalisti.

Subito dopo l’annuncio, Marco Mengoni ha detto: “È stato un grande onore partecipare a questo Festival”, e ha dedicato la vittoria a Luigi Tenco, ricevendo il Leone dal sindaco di Sanremo, Maurizio Zoccarato. La vittoria è avvenuta con

X Factor winner, wins Sanremo too

il 36% dei voti nella fase finale. Al secondo posto sono arrivati Elio e le Storie Tese con la canzone momonota; al terzo posto i Modà cantando Se si potesse non morire.

È Antonio Maggio invece il vincitore della sezione giovani del concorso canoro sanremese con la canzone Mi servirebbe sapere. La vittoria del cantante pugliese, vincitore nel 2008 della prima edizione di X

Factor, conferma la tendenza degli ultimi anni a Sanremo di premiare il “figlio” di un talent show.

Il premio della critica, dedicato a Mia Martini, è andato a Renzo Rubino, con la canzone Il postino (amami uomo). Miglior testo è stato giudicato Le parole non servono più, del cantautore Il Cile, che si è aggiudicato il premio della giuria di qualità.Il Festival di Sanremo si chiude con gli ottimi risultati dei presentatori: Fabio Fazio e Luciana Littizzetto e con tantissimi ospiti fra i quali Toto Cutugno,

Beppe Fiorello, Carla Bruni, Roberto Baggio, Albano, Bianca Balti, Daniel Harding, Claudio Bisio, Pippo Baudo e molti altri. Spazio anche per una celebrazione di Mike Bongiorno, con l’inaugurazione di una statua dedicata allo

storico presentatore. Infine grande emozione con il ritorno di Andrea Bocelli, ospite d’onore della serata finale, che ha cantato, con il figlio Amos, La Voce del Silenzio e due brani tratti dal suo nuovo album Passione.

L’unico chiaro risultato ddelle lezioni 2013 sembra essere l’instabilità e forse addirittura l’ingovernabilità.

Alla Camera la coalizione del centrosinistra con il 29,54% conquista a malapena il premio maggioranza (340 seggi) mentre il centrodestra arriva al 29,13% (124 seggi). Grande delusione per Monti che raggiunge solo il 10,54% (45 seggi). Il vero vincitore di queste elezioni è quindi il Movimento 5 Stelle di Beppe Grillo con il 25,55% (108 seggi). Non entrano in parlamento Fini, Ingroia e Di Pietro.

Al Senato la situazione sembra essere ingestibile: il centrosinistra prende il 31,60% ma, non essendoci un premio maggioranza al Senato, solo 119 seggi. Il centrodestra prende il 30,66% (117 seggi), il M5S il 23,79% (54 seggi), Monti il 9,13% (18 seggi). Nessuno, quindi, arriva alla quota 158 seggi necessaria per avere la maggioranza a Palazzo Madama.

Per quanto riguarda gli italiani all’estero, il Pd

Italia Ingovernabile?risulta il primo partito con circa il 30% dei voti sia alla Camera che al Senato, aggiudicandosi 5 deputati e 4 senatori. Molto bene anche Monti che ottiene 2 seggi alla Camera e 1 al Senato. Male sia il Pdl che il M5S entrambi con un solo seggio alla Camera. Infine in America Meridionale grande successo per i partiti locali.

Ritornando all’Italia, i risultati di queste elezioni dimostrano quanto gli italiani abbiano voluto bocciare le politiche di austerità del governo Monti. Questo preoccupa l’Ue e la Germania ma anche le Borse di tutto il mondo che temono che queste disastrose elezioni in Italia minaccino il futuro dell’Euro e vorrebbero un governo stabile che continui a portare avanti le riforme iniziate da Monti. I mercati puntano al governissimo Pd-Pdl-Monti, ma l’ipotesi governissimo per ora è stata esclusa da Bersani nonostante l’ offerta di un’intesa da parte di Berlusconi. Il Pd nell’interesse della stabilità però – e, visti i risultati, un’alleanza

con Monti non essendo sufficiente – ha lanciato segnali di apertura a Grillo che invece ribatte di non voler fare nessuna alleanza con i vecchi partiti. Nonostante Grillo non voglia dar fiducia ad un Governo Bersani esiste ancora la possibilità che i Grillini lascino l’aula al momento del voto, permettendo così un governo di minoranza per poi poter approvare leggi di interesse comune quali il conflitto di interessi, l’abolizione dei contributi pubblici ai partiti, oltreché eleggere il nuovo Presidente della Repubblica. Molto probabilmente poi si tornerebbe alle urne entro un anno o forse dopo solo alcuni mesi.

Tuttavia, essendo il mandato di Napolitano in scadenza, le Camere non possono essere sciolte da lui e quindi non si può tornare subito alle urne. Prima convocazione delle camere è attesa per il 15 marzo, poi consultazione e incarico.

Un possibile governo sembrerebbe aver vita breve ma forse non brevissima.

Perk Up, Spring is Springing. Once February is over, hope begins to emerge. The days lengthen; the air has that little something extra, probably the aroma of snow melting. Oh, but that tired wardrobe!

Something must be done!

Now is the time to think about colour. It WILL be back in our world, even here in Winnipeg. It will, it will! But while we’re waiting, let’s add some colour ourselves.

Remember back when it was all the rage to have our colours ‘done’? Try

to remember which one it was that flatters your skin tone and emphasizes your eyes. Now go prowl the End of Winter Sales and see what you can find. I don’t mean spend a lot of money. On the contrary, give yourself a budget, a ceiling price, like shopping for those party gift exchanges. Find a little hat, a pair of earrings, a scarf, something for near your face that will reflect your best colour back at you. Then, if you’ve been gravitating to your palette like you were supposed to, you probably have garments in your wardrobe that would just love to be treated to

a new little accessory. Surprise, surprise! I’ll bet that new item fits right in. See, you chose a coordinate with hardly any effort!

Next, dig out that lipstick sample you got ‘way back when you bought those cosmetics, in a shade you thought didn’t suit you at all. Try it now, with your fresh new purchase near your face. Do you look a little different than usual? Good! That’s what will get you through to April. That little jolt in appearance which anticipates the coming season puts a spring in our step, even if not yet

in the weather.

Something else that’s kind of fun, and denotes warmer days to come, is a new pair of sunglasses. This is one of the few times wearing them makes sense! The sun’s rays are beginning to change, particularly once we hit daylight saving. Spring forward, remember? But there’s still snow on the ground, causing a glare, and we certainly don’t want to start squinting. Squinting causes wrinkles around the eyes and between the eyebrows. A pair of shades with yellow lenses solves that problem. (They make driving in a

downpour safer, too. Did you know that? So hang onto that pair, and make them double-task.)

Of course you’ve been conscientiously applying sunscreen daily. This is a very important beauty care habit to have. Late winter, early spring, sunshine, can do as much damage as baking at the beach. Mmmm! The beach! There’s a happy thought.

Perk Up, Spring is Springing

In recent years coconut oil has gained widespread popularity. Once reviled for its high saturated fat content, coconut oil has now become a miracle oil for everything from improving brain function to fighting cholesterol - debunking the saturated fat myth. Now before you run out and eat all the saturated fat food you can find, coconut oil’s medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) differ from your run of the mill longer chained triglycerides found in foods that aren’t good for us. These long chain triglycerides will store as fat – therefore making us fatter – and can lead to cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer.

6. Coconut oil has been known to soothe chicken pox, shingles, rashes and other skin irritations.

7. It makes a great natural toothpaste.

8. Coconut can be used in place of massage oil and you can add a drop or two of lavender oil to make it an even more relaxing

Coconut oil can help prevent them or reduce their visibility.

10. It’s great for diaper rash and cradle cap.

Finally, and I’m on the fence with this one, but many people have reported using coconut oil as a natural sunscreen. While I’d love to tell you first hand that it works, I haven’t actually tried it for this use. If you do decide to try coconut oil as a natural sunscreen, I caution you to try it out first for a short period of

time on a small part of your body and re-apply often.

One last thing about coconut oil. At room temperature it’s a solid – just like butter – and melts at 24 C. Coconut oil should never be a liquid at room temperature. If it is, do not buy it.

A Francesco Totti’s goal from the penalty spot is a familiar sight for Serie A fans, and an always welcome sight for Roma fans, no doubt one they have seen often over the last 20 years.

The opening goal of the March 3 match versus Genoa was the 225th Serie A goal in the Roma legend’s 21-years career at the club, and a goal that has moved him into joint ownership with Swede Gunnar Nordahl for second in the Italian national league’s all-time scoring list.

The Roma captain so far has 10 goals on the season and another tally will move him into sole possession of second place on the scoring list trailing only Silvio Piola who had 274 goals in his 25-year career.

What is most impressive of this incredible feat is that all of Totti’s goals have come with the same club, his home town club, the club he first suited up with at 16 years of age. The loyalty Totti has shown to his hometown

Few would doubt that Totti could have been handsomely paid and exposed to a much larger audience should he have ever dawned the shirt of a club like Manchester United, Barcelona or Real Madrid. And at the peak of his career, Totti could of chosen to make his home in any city he desired and in the end

But the measure of success of career in sports cannot always be qualified by hardware. Francesco Totti has carried the club on his back and wore his heart on the sleeve his jersey every time he stepped on the field. In turn, he has been rewarded with an

undying, unwavering and unconditional love from the club’s fans. The greatest reward of his Roma’s career cannot be displayed in a trophy case.

He is a symbol that is synonymous with the club he has played with for the last 21-years and captained for the last 15. He is a legend amongst fans that see their captain as one of them, a boy that went from the stands of the Olimpico and the streets of Rome to the a hero on the pitch and the club’s all-time greatest player. Rome may no longer be an empire, but that doesn’t mean they no longer have an emperor.
