If you have not already booked (and there are several Clubs who are not as yet represented) even if it’s only for the Saturday business session, please do so as soon as possible. March also brings with it the Lions UN Day which is held at the House of Commons. This year it is on the 10th March and it coincides with our International President’s Official Visit to the Multiple District. The activities of the DG Team are now back in full swing with Club Visits and Charter Anniversary Celebrations. It still always amazes me to witness all the Community activities that take part amongst the Clubs within our District and the help and assistance Lions Clubs provide in the Local communities as well as the support they provide for National and International projects. The Clubs within Multiple District 105 have surpassed the target we set for the EBOLA project and have raised over £62,000... a huge thanks is due to Clubs within 105E for contributing £7,900 towards this figure. The Centennial Service Challenge is taking place between 2014 and 2017. This presents a great opportunity for us, as a District and as Clubs, to celebrate 100 years of Worldwide service by Lions Clubs International. The current objective is for us all to collectively come up with ideas through our Districts to identify how, within the Multiple District, we can carry out service activities in our local communities that suitably celebrate what Lions have been doing for 100 years. Please give some thought to ways to share your projects – on social media, on your Club website, through this Newsletter (Update ‘E’) and whenever possible via your local press. What we would also like you to do is enter the projects on your Clubs My LCI Activity Report. That way Clubs can be recognised by our Association for the work they carry out. To provide the service we are renowned for we need pairs of hands... new and additional members. To recruit new members use Just Ask. District Membership is still some way from the magical 1250 members, but with your help hopefully our numbers will grow and we will be capable of increasing the service we provide. When talking with Potential members please remember the Penny Campaign and the Community Report Booklet. Both provide a good talking points and highlight what Lions across the Great Britain and Ireland are doing in their communities. Unfortunately we have had to have a rethink for the name of the District Internet Club. East and Midlands Phoenix Internet Club is presently the favoured name. The Phoenix Club was one of the original groups of the Lions founder Clubs and in fact initially the Association was, for a short period, called the Phoenix Club before adopting the Lions Clubs identification. For more information about the new Internet Club please contact PDG Elaine Kitchen (also see page 8). My diary is rapidly filling with Club Visits and Charters. Please remember if you want me to come to your Charter or any other event, please contact me as soon as possible... and, as always a big THANK YOU for your continued service within the community in the name Lions, and remember - Together Everyone Achieves More. Please consider how YOU may be ableto support Jane in her appeal on behalf ofGUIDE DOGS

Dear Members of the Lions family...

Another busy month, DG Alan has been busy with his Cabinet meeting and Club visits. The partners had a lovelytrip to the Denby Outlet whilst the Cabinet meeting took place, it was so good we hope to return next year (Manythanks to Andy for carrying the pots x).

Thanks also to Rutland Lions Club for looking after Alan so well at their Club meeting and for their donation toGuide Dogs for the Blind. Many thanks also to Shepshed Lions Club for looking after both of us so well at theirCharter evening, the food, company and entertainment were superb and Guides Dogs also benefitted that eveningfrom their generosity.

I always love a trip to Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, so attending their Charter is a delight for me, yet again wehad a super night and a bracing walk along the sea front on Sunday morning. Looking forward to Louth ClubCharter and meeting up with friends and members of the Lions family at Kenwick Park, a super way to endFebruary.

Plans are now sorted for District Convention... I hope everyone will have an informative and fun time. A great dealof hard work has gone into its organisation by Glanford & Lindsey Lions so Alan and I owe them a huge debt ofthanks. Guide Dogs for the Blind will be attending and are having a stall for information and giving a talk toConvention in the afternoon, so I hope you will enjoy it.

Charlie Long (21) recently returned from Tanzania where, workingwith the charity Raleigh International, he’s been helping to achievea list of targets identified by the Charity.

Tanzanian challenge

Eradicate Extreme Poverty Achieve Universal Primary Education Promote Gender Equality Reduce Child Brutality Improve maternal health. Combat HIV, Malaria and other Bacterial diseases Ensure environmental sustainability. Global partnership development.

Help had been given to Charlie by Spalding Lions so he happily agreedto give a talk about his experiences at a recent Zone D Meeting.Alongside other young people Charlie has been helping to addressthe challenges set by the Raleigh International charity in conjunctionwith a set of United Nations objectives for third world countries -these are to...

Charlie Long with Zone Chairman Lion Fred Collins (left)and Lion President Bob Coxhead

Charlie stayed with a local family with 7 children (but they still found room for him). The youngest child had neverpreviously seen a white person and so cried miserably, whenever he came into the house. During his 3 months stayCharlie helped to set up much needed Sanitation Blocks to replace the toilet holes dug in the ground. He found that theinterest of the villagers and a ‘self help’ attitude encouraged the young people to achieve many of their objectives.Charlie’s account of his arduous but fulfilling adventure captivated those present. It all led to one Lion who attendedmaking the comment... it was the most interesting and best attended Zone meetings that I’ve ever been to.

UPDATE ‘E’ - March 2015: Page 3

FOUR - yes - four new memberswere recently inducted into the ranks ofthe Scunthorpe Lions Club. Lion PresidentDerek Hall said... ‘its a real pleasure to beable to increase the Club’s numbers byfour in one single induction ceremony, strengthening what is already a strong, thriving and active Club’.

The new Lions are all eager to take part inthe Club's activities. Indeed, each of themwas actively involved in helping the Clubeven before their official induction. Whenspeaking to Update ‘E ‘ they all recalledthe enjoyment of participating in somepre Christmas activities including theLions’ Grotto and Annual Pantomime treatfor underprivileged and disabled children. The new Lions are: Bryan Rawlinson... married to Beverley he has had ties with the Lions for many years (his brother,Lion John Ralwinson, is the Club Secretary). Bryan is a former roof tiler who, as well as a grandfather is fanatical aboutsports and enjoys football and playing golf.David Mumby... a retired Civil Engineer who enjoys spending time in his garden.John Glover... a retired Engineering Manager is keen to emphasise the importance of his family. He is married to Paulineand has a passion for snooker. Finally Roger Holmes... an ex Steelworker who also involves himself, along with his wife Barbara, in family activities andresponsibilities but finds time to do gardening and loves anything to do with nature.

Each one of this quartet agreed that they were looking forward to getting enormous satisfaction from helping the Clubto meet its community commitment. As well as savouring the pride that comes through the knowledge these goodworks bring the new Lions are also enjoying the accompanying benefits of fellowship with others who share their ideals.

It’s without doubt that throughout District 105E there will be a warm welcome for these new members of the family ofLions.

New QUARTET of Lions...

... and meanwhile in Rutland

Another welcome addition to our numbers wasrecorded at a Rutland Lions Club meeting inFebruary when District Governor Lion Alan Hallmade his formal DG Visit to the Club. The DistrictGovernor was invited to induct new Lions Clubmember Keith Humphrey.Lion Keith, and his wife Liz, moved from Surrey toOakham four years ago following his retirementfrom the Insurance Business. Keith and Liz have 2mature sons and a granddaughter. Interested inhorse racing and once a proficient cricketer Keithis also a keen member of a local Quiz Team. It’s also of interest that some time ago Keith wasinvolved in making a citizen's arrest... he chaseda burglar, apprehended him and delivering him tothe Police. For his actions he received a PoliceAssistant Commissioner’s commendation .

District Governor Lion Alan Hall - pleased to welcome Lion Keith Humphreywith (from left)Secretary Charles Robertshaw, Membership Officer DavidLovering and Rutland Lions President Allan Grey

Keith's wife Liz is active in the Women's Institute and Oakham in Bloom and both are members of their local NADFAS (theFine Arts Society) group. Keith and Liz enjoy living in Rutland (and in particular Oakham ) and now Keith is lookingforward to taking part in Lions activities (he’s already enjoyed helping out on Santa's Sleigh) and trying to ‘put somethingback’ into the local society through the Lions. In return he’s hoping that involvement in Lions will provide opportunitiesfor socialising, friendship and camaraderie... we’re sure he won’t be disappointed.

Please share your news with us all - tell and ensure your new Members are introduced to our District.Send your information to the Editor... Lion Gordon Davison - [email protected] - or call 01724 762036 or 07711 153080

UPDATE ‘E’ - March 2015: Page

Seven years ago Lion Ann Stafford (Lincoln Lions)had cancer. During her recovery Ann was determinedto do something to express her appreciation to theLincoln County Hospital Breast Unit. She hit on theidea of the Three Fifties Cycle Challenge in which 50Cyclists would be challenged to cycle 50 miles witheach raising £50. Lincoln Lions gave great supportand the Cycle Challenge took place with both Annand husband (1st Vice District Governor Lion Paul)cycling the 50 miles. In all 76 cyclists took part raising over £10,000 for theBreast Unit. The Three Fifties Cycle Challenge hasnow become a fixture on the Lincoln Lions calendarand over £25,000 has been raised. This achievement came to the notice of Ann's employer, HM Revenue and Customs, and she was nominated for andreceived a British Empire Medal in the 2014 Queens Birthday Honours. The BEM was recently presented by the LordLieutenant, Tony Woods at a ceremony attended by Ann's family, Lincoln Lions members and HMRC colleagues...Editor’s Note... It’s certain that everyone in District 105E will want to share in congratulating Lion Ann on this recognition ofher endeavour and success - ‘Well done’ from us all.

Cycle Challenge leads to High Honour for Lion Ann

Lion Ann receives her award from Lord Lieutenant Tony Woodsaccompanied by Mrs Wood and supported by husband Lion Paul.

Lion Jim Harding of Scunthorpe Lions Club waspleased, and certainly proud, to visit to the Houseof Lords following a luncheon invitation fromBaroness Sally Greengross OBE. The Baroness chairsa New Dynamics of Ageing (NDA) Advisory Group ofwhich Lion Jim is a member. The luncheon was held to launch a new NDAHandbook which summarises the key findings of 35Research Projects which will ultimately contribute toimproving quality of life as people age. Lion Jimcommented... ‘My invitation to attend the LunchReception in the Attlee Room at the House of Lordscame from Baroness Greengross and I received it asI’m a member of the NDA Programme’s OPRG (OlderPersons Reference Group). I’ve helped too in thecompilation of the new Programme Handbook. It wascertainly a unique, once in a lifetime, opportunity’.

The OPRG was created to supplement the NDA Programme`s Advisory Committee. It utilises the personal input of activeand independent older people. Since 2007 these self-directed volunteers have provided a wide range of life experiences, knowledge and contacts, plus volunteer assistance and creative thinking, to be used within a variety of research projects.Lion Jim became involved through his lifetime experience and his support for the Older Community. He is actively involvedwith Care Homes, Chairing a local Senior Citizens Forum and other similar groups. He’s now coupled these activities withmembership of the NDA Programme OPRG. His participation in numerous research projects has resulted in an effectivebut involvement. Since retirement Jim has campaigned for Help the Aged (now Age UK) in support of our Older Peopleand Communities both locally and nationally.Jim told us... ‘I was recognised by Help the Aged in their Annual Review in 2008 for my campaigning in support of OlderPeople. My name was put forward and I was invited to take part (as a volunteer )in the NDA Programme Older PeoplesReference Group. I proudly wear my Lions badge at all times and I’m delighted to have been able to promote the workof Lions Clubs, and especially my own Club [Scunthorpe], whenever the opportunity arises at our Research Projects andgroup meetings.’The NDA Programme is a collaboration between five major Research Councils. It’s the largest multidisciplinary programmeof its kind ever undertaken in the UK. At a cost of £23 Million it’s covering 35 Research Projects over a 9 year period.Lion Jim finally adds... ‘The OPRG consists of just 16 members from areas across the country. Each contributes to variousresearch projects, meeting with Scientists, Professors and researchers, visiting Universities, historical venues and also, in2009, visiting Brussels for a European Economic and Social Committee Future of Ageing Conference. It’s all been a realprivilege... and one that I’ve truly enjoyed... It leads me to believe that retirement is very demanding of one`s time.’

36 YEARS... and still serving

On behalf of the District Governor Zone ChairmanLion Colin Turnbull (right) presents Lion StuartDodds with his award.

Lion Stuart undertakes activities with courtesy and utterdedication to the cause, going about his duties in a quietunassuming way seeking no publicity. He makes many greeting cards with Lions emblems which hedistributes at Christmas and has also supplied them for use bymembers who send out cards for birthdays and notable occasions.Being a retired teacher, Lion Stuart is well known locally andrespected in the town, as all his old pupils stop to speak to him.We extend our grateful thanks to Lion Stuart for his generousendeavours in all club activities. Lion Stuart happily volunteers histime and service to help make a difference, being one that isalways willing to go that extra mile to help. This Certificate of Appreciation is awarded in recognition of hisdedication to humanitarian service of the highest degree. Thankyou for your continued support to this worthwhile cause.

Lion President, Kevin Senior commented...‘Lion Stuart is often the go to gu when you needadvice or experience. We’re all so proud to knowhim and join in acknowledging all his dedication toour Club and the community we serve’.

‘I would like to say a big thank you to all those who submitted entries this year. I hope the level of entries willencourage more Clubs to take part in the 2015-16 competition- SHARE PEACE.The timetable for success is to the approach schools early. We know the theme now so contact can be madewith schools immediately. Timetables and curricula do not allow for a lot of deviation. Plans may already be inplace for the rest of the school year, however, some schools may be willing to make the Peace Poster part oftheir annual planning. The sooner this is discussed the better. In Primary Schools it may be possible for Year 6Pupils to take part during the summer term particularly after their Year 6 SAT’s.Other ideas may include sponsoring a workshop with a visiting artist or as part of ongoing involvement withother projects for example - UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award or other International Partnership work.Clubs may consider offering to buy the necessary art materials for an Out of School Club, Summer School orScouts or Guides group to enable them to take part in the competition. I am not certain when the packs will beat MD but I’ll keep asking! These now cost £11 each! The timetable will be as last year with District judging inEarly November.’

Whilst it may seem a little odd to feature an out of season Pudsey Bear inour March Issue the reasons become more understandable when youstart to consider that it has some BEARing (sorry readers) on the forwardplanning strategy of Blaby Lions Club.Already the Club is starting to lay down the organisational details for its2015 Pudsey Campaign. And, looking back at the association Blaby Lionshave had with Children in Need, you soon realise why they consider thisto be so important. The Club has, to date, raised over £150,000 for theBBC operated appeal. On one day alone last year they managed tocollect a massive £6,000, more than £3,000 of which came from onelocation where a persistent Pudsey charged drivers to park on a ‘FREE’car park. But the fact that so much money has been raised is not the sole reasonthat Club members are anxious to get the ball rolling early. Throughouttheir involvement the Lions have enjoyed some great publicity throughinvolvement in interviews on Radio Leicester. Another benefit ofinvolvement which has helped to raise theprofile of Lions’ Service in the Leicester area.

So... No apologies for publishing this out ofseason story. Perhaps it will serve as areminder to us all that forward planning canbring us great rewards.Pictures: Top - Pudsey Bear and Lion Bill Green are poised ready to illicit Parking Fees from shoppers.Bottom - Tony Wadsworth and Julie Mayer of Radio Leicester in a ‘live’ interview with Lions Richard Fox (extreme right) and Roger Smith

UPDATE ‘E’ - March 2015: Page

We must face it! Our Lions service is being undertaken in an era when many Clubs findit difficult to attract new members (especially those that fall into a younger age group). But now a new idea (for our District), the formation of a District Internet Club, mayprovide some of the Membership answers we’ve, for some time, been searching for.An Internet Club may appeal to those who would like to be involved in communityservice and charity fundraising activities but, for a variety of reasons, can’t manageto attend regular meetings or take part in normal Lions activity. These prospective Lionsmay include young parents, young people or older professionals who have careerconstraints, disabled people or those perhaps those care for dependant relatives.Anybody who has access to a computer or laptop etc. and fits into one of these (or othersimilar) categories could be an ideal candidates for membership of such a Club.Lion Fiona Reid and PDG Lion Elaine Kitchen have been involved with the task of gettingan Internet Club established. They would like to hear from you if...

you are a person who would benefit from membership of an Internet Lions Club you know of anyone who may like to know more about this idea
