One of the mostimportant things we doas a Car Club, is to makeothers aware of ourpassion and admirationof BMW automobiles.Included with thatpassion, is an effort tomake others, especiallychildren, better and saferdrivers.

For years, the BMW CCAhas sponsored a variety of car related activities, withthe goal of improving the driving skills of all of ourmembers. These activities include high performancedriving schools, safety schools and autocross.

Several years ago, the BMW CCA Foundation, in aneffort to educate teens with driving skills which are nottaught in traditional driver’s education courses, developed a unique program called Street Survival, now sponsored by Tire Rack.

The Tire Rack Street Survival program’s emphasis isto expose teen drivers to a “ ‘hands-on’ drivingexperience in real world situations.”

According to the BMW CCA Foundation, each yearover 5,000 teens (ages16-19) die in traffic relatedaccidents, accounting for 40% of all deaths for that agegroup. It is the goal of this program to “give studentsthe basics of car control, to enhance their enjoyment ofdriving and to improve their competence as drivers.” The Iowa Chapter BMW CCA started with one annualStreet Survival several years ago occurring at theSoutheast Polk High School parking lot. Now, severalyears later, with the help and partnership of the DesMoines Valley Region SCCA, we have sponsoredseveral events each year with two occurring in centralIowa and one in eastern Iowa. The Iowa Speedway inNewton has become the home of the central Iowaevents and Bettendorf High School the home of theeastern Iowa events.

With any of the events our Chapter sponsors, it isvitally important to secure enough volunteers to makethe event a viable and memorable event. I encourageall of you, to take a little time this year and help ourteen drivers by volunteering at one of our events. It isimportant that we educate and help develop gooddriving habits for the teens of central and eastern Iowa. All of our lives depend on it.

Well, we’ve gone through allof the steps on preparing yourride for waxing and we havealso reviewed how to choosethe right wax or sealant tomeet your expectations. Now,it’s time to get it done! Waxingyour BMW should be a veryenjoyable and satisfyingexperience when you followsome basic guidelines. Plus,we all know how much better, faster and smoother they run

after a great waxing!

To begin, now that you have chosen your wax or sealant, what are you going to apply it with? If I am applying by hand,my personal choice is to use a 3" soft foam pad. I like thissize as it is easy to hold and I am able to reach into thesmaller places with ease. Most buffers also have a soft foampad available for this purpose. The reason that I chose foamrather than a cotton or microfiber applicator is that it holds ashape that is easy to work with and I find that I use lessproduct. Foam, by its very nature, easily gives up the productto the paint finish rather than absorb and hold onto it as amicrofiber or cotton applicator is prone to do.

Before you begin, make sure the surface is cool to the touch. If it is hot, the wax will not go on smoothly and it will dry toofast. A sealant is more sensitive to this than wax. Sealantstypically need some time to set in order to cross-link andbond with the surface to provide you with maximumprotection and shine.

When applying, there is no need to work at it and rub it in bygoing over an area multiple times. At this point the surfacehas been well cleaned and prepped. Your job now is tosimply apply the wax or sealant to the surface, nothing more.Simply rub a small, thin layer on the surface and keep itmoving. Did I mention a thin layer? The only thing you willaccomplish by putting it on thick is to make the waxmanufacturer very happy as you will be using a lot more oftheir product. You won’t be doing the paint any favors as theextra thickness will just be simply buffed off.

Now you are ready to see and enjoy the fruits of your labor.Yes, it is time to buff the surface. Buffing will remove theexcess wax or sealant as well as the ‘transport’ material thatwas there to simply help you move the product from thebottle to your rides surface. Your choice of what to use forbuffing is important. A soft material with a surface that is‘grabby’ is best. If this sounds like microfiber to you then youwould be correct. A microfiber towel with a rated weight ofbetween 300 to 550 grams works very well. If it is too thin thebuffing towel won’t have enough thickness to pull in theremoved wax. If it is too thick it will have a tendency to gumup and hold too much removed material. You can also usecotton but if you have not used microfiber before, give it a try.

When it comes to buffing, the best tip that I can give you isthis – use a lot of clean towels or buffer pads. My rule ofthumb is to use one towel or a set of buffer pads per panel orevery other panel on a smaller vehicle. I define a panel asone fender, one door, one hood, etc. It’s simple math. Viewthe size of the area that you are preparing to buff andcompare that to the size of your buffing towel or buffer pads.

As you buff, the material that you remove loads up onto yourtowel or pads. In a short amount of time, the entire towel orpad is covered with the wax that you have buffed. If youcontinue to buff your BMW using the same towel or set ofpads, you will begin to simply smear what you have collectedonto the remaining surfaces. You will find that a fresh, cleantowel or set of pads will make a very significant difference inthe ease of buffing as well as in your final results.

As a final step that will assure you remarkable results, goover your entire ride with a very fine mist of a high qualityquick detail product, preferably without added wax, and thesoftest microfiber towel that you can find. This final step willeven out any smearing that may have occurred and pick upany wax that you may have missed. Your results will trulyshine!

Enjoy your ride . . .

BMW Club watches Drake Bulldogs in MVC matchup by Nicole Jobst-Smith

Lately the club has been going to a sporting event inJanuary to serve as a special social. In years past, theclub has gone to Iowa Energy games. This year, theysupported the Drake Bulldogs on January 25 in theirgame against the ranked Wichita State Shockers.

Although outranked, the Bulldogs are known to give agood show on their home court against toughopponents. It’s known in the Valley (Missouri ValleyConference) that the Knapp Center is a difficult venue

to play. We have some magic of our own. Unfortunatelythis round the Bulldogs fell to the Shockers 61-78.

Club members met for dinner at Drake Diner prior tothe game, and enjoyed company regardless of theBulldogs loss.

If you have ideas for the January sports outing, let aboard member or Alison Bell know [email protected].

We have held our Longest Day Driving School everyJune since 2002 when MidAmerica Motorplex firstopened. But this year, we’re going to do things just alittle differently. Because of a schedule conflict withBMW CCA Oktoberfest, our driving school will be onJuly 18-20. And since we’re not so close to the longestday of the year (the source of the original name), thistime we’re calling the event Hot Cars in theSummertime. (With apologies to Sly and the FamilyStone, for those of a certain age…)

Expect to see all of the usual features of our drivingschools, like great instruction in high-performancedriving, a wonderful Saturday dinner catered by Donand Stacy Van Lengen, and all-around good fun. Counton some exciting new features as well. Host hotel will bethe Holiday Inn Express in Council Bluffs, and theyalready have a room block available for us – just ask forthe Iowa BMW rate. Watch for registration to open onwww. motorsportreg.com in early April. More info to beposted shortly on the chapter website, and we’ll havemore to come in the next Newswerks too.
