The Buff is being distributed electronically to 454

Snowbirds account for part of this discrepancy.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE… Greetings to members of Unit 116, This is the last Buff for 2014. Next year we are introducing

a quarterly Buff instead of the current six editions. A special

edition will go out at election time if necessary.

The Unit has many fun events planned for you, come join

your fellow bridge players.

The Regional has just finished up and this marks the end

of an era. The team of John Toy and Patty Rasmus is officially

retired. The Buffalo Bridge Community owes this pair a

HUGE thank you for the many years of enjoyment they

delivered. Donna Steffan applauds Patty in the following

note: “Cheers: A huge thank you goes out to Patty Rasmus for

all of her hard work at this October’s Buffalo Regional. She

had, of course, “retired” last year, but when it became

necessary for someone to step up, there she was. She worked

so hard, as she always has, to provide us with the best

hospitality this side of the Mississippi. She asks for no

accolades in return, preferring that her name not even be on

the flyer or in the daily bulletin, but we Buffalo folks all know

that she is “the” person who makes this event what it is.

THANK YOU, Pat for a job superbly done, as always.”

The Unit is holding a team game “Eight is Enough” on

Sunday, November 9. It will be at Airport Bridge Club and

full information is on page 6 of this Buff.

Our last event of the year is our annual meeting on

Saturday, December 6. It will be held at Main-Transit Fire

Hall. In November, tickets will be for sale from board

members. See full information and schedule on the cover.

It is not too soon to mark your calendar for the Winter

Sectional, January 23-25, 2015. We are back to Main Transit

Fire Hall for this event. Full information on page 5.

Very Important! The month of November brings election

for Unit Board members. Bios of candidates are on page 7.

Look for ballots at your local clubs and be sure to vote.

I am going off the board after six years. It has been a

pleasure working with so many great people.

Betty Metz, Unit President

From the Editor: THANK YOU, BETTY!!!!

PLAY NICE!! The Opening DAILY BULLETIN at the Syracuse Regional

contained some “ideas to engender courtesy and pleasant play

at the table.” As space allows, these will be reprinted in the

Buff. They were and are in no particular order and many are. I

believe, commonly known.

• At the start of a round explain the main features of your

system (e.g. we play 2/1 with weak no trumps.)

• Before you look at your cards count your hand and ensure

that you have exactly thirteen cards.

• The board should be left on the table during the bidding and

play of the hand so everyone can see the vulnerability.

• The opening lead should be made face down until it is

accepted by partner. This prevents irregularities such as

leading when it is not your turn. It also enables your partner to

ask any questions about the auction or alerts that have been

made.

• When you are making the initial lead or playing to the first

trick, play your card before writing down your contract or

entering details in Bridgemate. It saves time and is a courtesy

to the other three people at the table.

• Do not ask for information unless it is your turn to call/play.

• All players should have a completed convention card at the

table. This is important as it ensures you disclose your

conventions and systemic agreements to your opponents. Your

opponents are entitled to know every systemic agreement you

and your partner have. Having a properly completed systems

card at the table also pre-empts unnecessary discussion at the

table and saves time. It also protects players from any

implication that partnership has secret understandings and that

their system has not been fully disclosed to their opponents.

• During play you are not allowed, without permission, to

touch or handle your opponent’s cards. If necessary ask your

opponent to show you a particular card.

• Dummy or either defender may draw attention to a card

pointed incorrectly; the right expires when a lead is made to

the following trick.

• At the end of a hand ensure that you do not mix up your

cards until the result is agreed with the opponents.

• The North player is responsible for the boards and for

ensuring the boards are not fouled before they are sent to the

next table.

• A player may not refer to his/her systems card during the

auction or play. (There was an expert tournament in Europe a

number of years ago where all players were required to play

the same system. One of the players called the director to the

table, then stated that he could not remember his system

and could he look at his card. The director advised him that he

could not. BUT he was permitted to look at his opponent’s

card!)

• At tournaments it is mandatory that your systems card should

match the card presented by one‘s partner.

Statements from the Candidates

You are to vote for up to THREE people for a 3-year term each.

ALLEN BEROZA

I am willing to serve on the Board in the event my

participation might help it become more inclusive in its efforts

to promote bridge within the Unit.

CHIP KEAN

Fellow Bridge Players,

I am Arthur (Chip) Kean, and I would be privileged to

serve on Unit 116's Board of Directors. For the past four years

I have served on the Bridge Center of Buffalo's Board of

Directors holding offices as Vice-President, Treasurer, and

this year as Co-President. I have had an integral part in

negotiating the last building lease and am presently involved

in negotiating a new lease extension. I have worked with other

tenants in our building to work co-operatively to solve

common problems of garbage disposal, common restroom

supplies, and common cleaning problems.

I am a firm believer in the idea that people come to bridge

clubs to have an enjoyable game. When the zero tolerance

policy of the American Bridge League is violated at our club,

the situations are referred to me to generate a reasonable and

fair resolution.

During my tenure on the Bridge Center of Buffalo's Board

of Directions, the club has changed from an investor's club to

a membership club. During that time, I believe that I have

been a leader in increasing membership, keeping fiscal

stability, and ensuring a friendly atmosphere in which to play

Bridge.

ELAINE KURASIEWICZ

I am Elaine Kurasiewicz and I am running for our Unit

Board. Many of you know me as the Elaine with the very

long name which few can pronounce. I can be as hard

working as my name is long! I have been a member of this

unit for around 30 years and have played at every club that our

area has had past and present. Over the years I have taken a

few sojourns from Bridge, but for the past few years, I have

refreshed my love for the game and the Bridge social season.

I pride myself on being fair and creative and I will bring these

qualities to the Board. I try to bring some fun and humor to

the games I attend and this is what I value as much as the

competitive nature of the game. I will try my best to be a

positive and supportive member of the Board and add some

new flair to the team. Thanks and be sure to cast your vote in

the upcoming elections!

BARBARA LIBBY

Bridge has become very important to me lately but I see

increasing conflict among different factions within the bridge

community and the Board. In my mind the Board should be

interested in the welfare of all of the members not any

particular group. If I am elected I will represent the members

since I have no vested interest in promoting one group over

another.

VIOLET MAKHIJA

My name is Violet Makhija and I live in Lockport. I started

playing bridge 4 years ago. I enjoy playing bridge and I just

got certified as a bridge director. I want to be on the board

because I love to work with people and I believe I can help our

unit.

JOE MIRANDA

TOVA REINHORN

The last three years, as a Unit board member, I had the

pleasure to work for the bridge community of Western New

York. There were many challenges such as organizing unit

games, getting volunteers for various activities, and there is a

lot more to do. As treasurer, I initiated electronic

recordkeeping, used free electronic bill paying and provided

timely reports. I was instrumental in bringing the unit to

comply with the IRS rules and obtaining the "not for profit

organization", which will save time and headaches in the years

to come.

I want to insure that our members have great opportunities

to play the game we all love, in a cordial atmosphere that

allows learning and fun for all levels of competition. I will

listen to your suggestions so that we can continue and improve

the unit's support of the players and all the clubs in the unit.

PAULA SALAMONE

PAUL ZITTEL

Three years ago, you the members, elected me to serve on

the Board of Directors for Unit 116. In this time, I have been

hard-working and honest. A few of my accomplishments are:

chair of successful unit picnics, chair of several unit sectionals

as well as many unit games. My proudest accomplishment is

the introduction of electronic scoring to our unit. It would be

my pleasure to serve the local bridge community for another

term.
