Seven Ages of Man Well done to all of you who were involved in Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday’s performance of ‘Seven Ages of Man’. What a talented group of thespians, dancers, singers, musicians and backstagers we have at IGS! The audiences were enthralled from curtain up to final applause. After working hard at Ingleborough during your residential you really pulled out the stops to treat us to another show stopping production. From the prophetic warnings of “Prayer before Birth” to the plea for justice, equality and environmental responsibility of “Children of the World” as well as the

importance of the writings of Shakespeare and Harper Lee, you tackled the issues head-on. The letter from the Western Front was particularly poignant in this 100th anniversary of WW1. It was a real privilege to see how well you work together, support each other and celebrate each other: amazing team spirit. Everyone who managed to get a seat was as proud of you all as I was, including one particular audience member who emailed in on Wednesday.

Following my attendance at the show last night which is currently running at IGS, I would like for you to know how thoroughly impressed I was.

The show brought sadness, tears, joy and certainly some laughter, what more could you ask for, except a strong and dependable backing from musicians in the band, and this too as you no doubt know was also delivered!

I would greatly appreciate it if you would pass on to the staff and students my sincere thanks for all of their hard work, energy and their commitment.

Without any doubt, this has been a school highlight for me; dare I say the best show ever?

Ilkley Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race Good luck to all of you involved in the Pancake Race on The Grove on Tuesday 4th March. The race, organised by Ilkley Rotary Club, is due to start at 10.30 on Shrove Tuesday. All forms in Years 8 and 9 are being represented and students will be wearing colours appropriate to their Learning Community.

Appalling Behaviour in Boys’ Toilets There was an example of the most appalling behaviour in the P Floor boys’ toilets on Monday morning, the details of which are too disgusting to mention. Anyone with any information of who may have been the culprit of such a horrible act should see Mr Calvert in confidence. This sort of behaviour has no place in Ilkley Grammar School.

Springs Lane Entrance

From Tuesday 4th March when you return after half term, the Springs Lane entrance will be vehicle only. A CCTV camera monitors it and you must not be found using it. It does mean you will need to either walk up Wheatley Lane or further along to the Springs Lane pedestrian entrance if you are coming from ‘Ben Rhydding’ but it will mean you are safe.

Sports’ Kit Amnesty We are calling an amnesty for any school team kit or any netball/hockey bibs which might be lurking in bedrooms or bags. Please could students have a good hunt over half term for any items which belong to school. We have several rugby, football, basketball shirts, athletics/cross country vests, and hockey/netball bibs missing…probably left at home by mistake.

Please return any items you may have to Miss Haines in the staffroom by Wednesday 5th March - no names, no recriminations, just bring our kit back please!

World Book Day Thursday 6th March: Stop Everything and Read!

Calling all students! It's competition time! This time… the competition is in the form of a human treasure hunt. Yes, to celebrate World Book Day on 6th March, members of the English Department will be dressing up as literary characters for the day. If you would like to enter the competition (as a team, or as an individual), then all you need to do is collect an entry form from Mrs Harrison in the Library on 6th March and work your way around school to track down all of our English staff.

You must find out out who each member of staff is dressed as and the literary text that the character is from. All completed entries need to go straight back to Mrs Harrison in the Library. Career of the Week: Graphic Designer

The Work: graphic designers control layouts, images and typography (print) in order to get a message across. They create designs which are visually appealing and perform a specific function. They usually work in an open-plan studio along with other designers. Much of the work involves sitting in front of a computer screen. There may be some travel to meet clients. In small agencies, you are more likely to work directly with clients. Although the work is mainly normal office hours, Monday to Friday, you may have to work longer hours close to deadlines. Entry Requirements: although there is no set entry route, you need to study Graphic Design. It is a competitive field to get into and most graphic designers have a degree. This gives you the technical skills you will need and helps you build up a portfolio of work. For a degree you usually need 2 ‘A’ Levels or equivalent e.g. Level 3 BTEC qualification. Some design courses may ask for a Foundation Diploma – 1 year course offered by many colleges e.g. Leeds College of Art, Bradford College, and Harrogate College locally. There are Graphic Design degrees at many universities across the U.K. Some courses have other related titles including:

Multimedia Graphics Pay: as a trainee you may start on the minimum or apprentice wage between £100 and £200 a week. THE BIG IDEA Fairtrade Fortnight sets aside two weeks every year in which the principles and products of fair trade are promoted and the links between consumers and producers are highlighted. Each year has a different theme - for 2014 there is a focus on 'making bananas fair'. For further information, visit the Fairtrade Foundation's Stick with Foncho website at: http://foncho.fairtrade.org.uk/. Over the past 10 years, the typical price of a banana in the UK has nearly halved, whilst the cost of production has doubled. Foncho thinks this is unfair. He’s travelling from his banana farm in Colombia to the UK this Fairtrade Fortnight, to ask Vince Cable to investigate unfair supermarket pricing practices and act to protect the producers of the UK’s favourite fruit.

What is a Fair Banana? The campaign to make bananas fair is all about ensuring every banana farmer and worker earns enough to enjoy a decent standard of living, works in safe conditions and has proper rights and benefits. It also aims to make sure bananas are produced in a way that is environmentally sustainable too. While Fairtrade has done a lot to meet this ambition, there are still areas that the international Fairtrade standards for bananas cannot cover, such as supermarket pricing practices, which is why they are running this campaign. Equally, they know they need to constantly look at ways of delivering even greater benefits for farmers, workers and the environment, with one example being their work towards guaranteeing a living wage for workers on plantations. Here is a definition of what the ultimate Fair Banana could look like.

A fair banana would be produced in a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable way and consumers would have a guarantee that this applies across the supply

chain.

So there would be independent verification that bananas are farmers are produced by farmers and workers who for example:

Are able to sell at a fair price or earn a wage which covers the cost of a decent standard of living and/or sustainable costs of production

Have access to fairly negotiated contracts, so as to be able to predict future income

Enjoy labour and union rights and are free from discrimination Have adequate health and safety guidance and equipment Are maintaining the environment for future generations

So next time you tuck into this healthy snack…why not think about where it came from?
