Types of Maps

• These are created by nature.• Mountains, rivers, lakes, ponds,

waterfalls and elevation (height from sea level).

Natural Features

• Any feature on a map made by man.• These could be roads, country

boundaries, cities, states, and wars.

Features Made by Man

• Describe cities, countries, or areas on a map that detail types of governments.

Political Maps

• Physical maps show the natural terrain such as mountains, rivers, and lakes.

Physical Maps

• Thematic maps describe a specific topic such as temperatures.

Thematic Maps

• To find your way on a map, use the tools that cartographers or mapmaker place on the map.

• The compass rose shows north, south, east and west.

• These directions let you know your relative or approximate location in relation to another place.

Cartographer or Mapmakers tools

• Scale- helps you estimate distance on a map.

• The key or legend explains symbols used on the map. The key can also identify special uses of color.
