Maple Valley School Newsletter

Welcome February and warmer weather, please. Our students and staff in the elementary continue to Strive for Excellence on a daily basis. As we move forward in providing a top notch education, we are reminded daily of how great our students are here in Raider Nation. As I take a step back and look at what is being done in the classrooms on a daily basis, I see how fortunate our students are to have a staff that is so willing to go above and beyond to pro-vide them with a caring and nurturing environment along with a top notch education. I am constantly reminded of why this is such a rewarding profes-sion. We should all be proud to be a part of such a great school system that is moving forward and Striving for Excellence. Our students and staff make Raider Nation a cutting edge educational experience, so that our students are career and college ready.

We have some great programs and highlights coming in February. Please make sure you are checking your child's homework folder for more detailed information.

The 5th grade will begin their RAID program taught by Officer Potter. The dates are February, 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and March 9th. This is a great pro-gram that Officer Potter runs. RAID informs and teaches our students about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, peer pressure and much more.

Our K-6 students will be taking part in "Pennies for Patients" to support the fight against cancer. Mrs. Mitzel will be having the "Pennies for Patients" kickoff this Thursday, February 1st. There will be a Spirit Week February 5th-9th with dress up days in support of this great program. Please be on the lookout for a letter from Mrs. Mitzel with detailed information on the "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser.

Grades 4-6 will begin Reality Check next week. Reality Check is run by our SADD chapter and involves our high school students. The dates of this pro-gram are February 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th.

Our 5th grade and 6th grade will have Puberty Talks on Friday, February 23rd. Dr. Paul Diegel will talk with our 6th grade boys from 8:45-9:45 and our 5th grade boys from 9:45-10:45. Gwen Fraase will talk with our 6th grade girls from 8:45-9:45 and our 5th grade girls from 9:45-10:45. Please be on the lookout for more information that will be sent home with your child in the near future.

As we move forward educationally, we are excited for the completion of our building project. We have been busy planning and preparing to all be under one roof. Parent volunteer help may be requested as we move into our Tower City location at the end of the school year. If you ever have questions, concerns, or just want to talk, please give me call, text, or stop in. Our goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our students and staff to succeed with the best possible educational experi-ence around.

The February meeting of the Maple Valley School Board

has been re-scheduled. It will be held on Wednesday, February 7th at 6:00 PM at the high school in Tower City.

PARENTS’ NIGHT

for girls’ basketball will be held at the Maple Valley vs. Oak Grove game at Tower City on Thursday, Feb-ruary 8th.

PRESIDENTS DAY ~ There will be NO CLASSES held on Monday, February 19th.

Reg.1 GBB Quarter-finals will be held that evening at the SHAC at NDSU.

PARENTS' NIGHT for boys' basketball will be held at the Maple Valley vs. Oak Grove game at Tower City on Thursday, Feb-ruary 22nd.

It is the mission of the Maple Valley School District to assure all students entrusted to the district are provided the educational opportunity to gain the skills, knowledge and attitude necessary to effectively function in a changing society.

MUSIC What is going on in Raider Music? Well, we, are at the height of our Pep Band season! We play at several boys’ and girls’ basketball games, including both Parents’ Night. Come out and support the basketball players and jam with the Pep Band. Our 9-12 music students are currently working on music for the Region II Instrumental and Vocal competitions, as well as our music for the Spring Concert in March. We were recently represented at the UND Mixed Honor Choir by Hali Miller. Ad-ditionally, we are anxiously awaiting results for the 2018 ND All-State Choirs that both Hali Miller and Rylie Karges live-

SADD students will be hosting SADD Cares Snow Week on

Monday, January 29 - Friday, February 2nd.

This year all funds will be donated to the Mindy Erickson family.

Each day we will have a different activity:

Monday - Make snowflakes during Raider Time .

Tuesday - Sucker Permit - $0.50 for permit $0.50 per sucker .

Wednesday - PJ Permit - Wear your pajamas all day $1.00 to

purchase a permit and SADD day to be a teacher (more infor-

mation to come).

Thursday - Hot Cocoa/ Cappuccino during Raider Time - $1.00

per cup.

Friday - Snow Days activities.

On January 23rd, Sophomores spent the morning

touring SVACTC and learning about the programs

offered there. Classes offered are all Career and

Technology Education courses. In addition to be-

ing on-site, many of the instructors also offer some

of their classes online or through ITV. Classes from

the SVACTC help students meet the coordinated

plans of study requirement when trying to qualify

for the ND Academic or CTE Scholarship ($6000).

SENIORS: ND Academic & CTE Scholarship: For

students who meet the qualifications for the ND

Academic & CTE Scholarship, the application is

now open. Please see the Scholarship page on the

Maple Valley’s Counseling website to access the

directions.

WorkKeys & ACCUPLACER Testing: For any

students needing to take WorkKeys tests (to qualify

for the ND Academic & CTE Scholarship) or AC-

CUPLACER (to determine English and Math place-

ment in college) – good news! Maple Valley HS is

set up as an online test center for both – just see

Mrs. Kaspari to schedule a time to test. There is no

charge for ACCUPLACER, and a $12/test for the

WorkKeys.

Scholarship Spotlight:

Reuben T. Guenther Scholarship: $350

scholarship to students graduating from a ND high

school and attending a 2-year ND post-secondary

institution. More information found on the Schol-

arship link located on the Counseling page of Ma-

ple Valley’s website.

ND Farmer’s Union Scholarships: Several

scholarships from ND Farmer’s Union are availa-

ble to students who is a members or children of

members. Scholarships range from $500 to

$2,000 with varying deadlines from January 31 to

April 22nd. More information found on the Schol-

arship link located on the Counseling page of Ma-

ple Valley’s website.

Maple Valley Dollars for Scholars: The appli-

cation window is open from February 1st – April

1st. Mrs. Kaspari will meet with all Senior students

who are eligible to set up accounts and work

through the application process. Paul Tinjum with

Dollars for Scholars will be available to help with

this and answer any questions as they arise.

Two (2) hour late start on Wednesday, February 14. Classes will begin at 10:15 am (no periods 6 and 7).

S kype in the Classroom. Microsoft has provided a great

opportunity for teachers and students to enhance their con-

tent area knowledge. Skype in the Classroom allows you to

bring subject matter experts to your classroom through vide-

oconferencing. In my World History class, we have had a

speaker from India speak about the cultures of India. We

also had the curator of the National World War 2 museum in

New Orleans take us on a virtual tour of the museum. I will

be providing micro-training to teachers during our after-

school training opportunities on Wednesdays.

The Cop Shop

We have been studying the different types of soils. Our science lab for the week was on soil types; clay, silty and loam. We had five different soil types from the following townships in our area: Springville, Hill, Tower and Buffalo. We used 100 grams of soil and water to create a soil ribbon. After the ribbon was formed we describe our soils and now we are waiting for them to dry up and then we will see the different colors.

Provide School Safety Training

Would you like to learn more about school safety, but aren’t really

sure how to do that? Well, we have some good news! There are two

opportunities coming next summer to Cass County, both open to an-

yone with an interest in keeping schools and kids safer.

On June 14th and 15th, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Northern

Cass School District will host the ALICE active shooter instructor certification course at

Northern Cass School. This course provides training that qualifies attendees to teach civilian

active shooter response and defense practices. Certified instructors may teach at their workplac-

es, community organizations, churches or other groups.

To register, visit www.alicetraining.com and click on the training schedule tab. The cost is $595 per person and includes all course materials. The North Dakota Association of School Resource Officers, in partnership with Cass-Clay Uni-

fied School Response, Cass County Sheriff’s Office and West Fargo Public Schools, will host the

2018 North Dakota School Safety Conference, June 20th and 22nd, at Liberty Middle

School in West Fargo. Topics include the youth opioid epidemic in ND, drug addiction trends

and treatment options in the Fargo-Moorhead region, Verbal Judo de-escalation and conflict

resolution with youth, and keynote Phil Chalmers – author, TV personality, crime expert and

youth advocate.

Graduate credit will be available through University of North Dakota and Valley City State University. Counseling and social work CEU’s will be available through NDSU Distance and Continuing Education.

Jakob Bloomquist’s photography has received recognition in the 2018 Scholastic

Art & Writing Awards for the following works:

Jakob’s works are currently on display at the Great Plains Art Museum in Fargo

through March 10th. The two Gold Key works will automatically advance on to the

National Competition.

The Maple Valley Geometry class took a field

trip to the Escape House in Fargo. We were

able to work on our Mathematical practices, in-

cluding • Make sense of problems and perse-

vere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and

quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments

and critique the reasoning of others. • Model

with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools stra-

tegically. • Attend to

precision. • Look for

and make use of struc-

ture. All students did a

were able to escape out

of all 3 rooms. The one

room had a 13% escape

Congratulations to the Raider Boys’ Bas-ketball Team on their 1st place finish in the Barnes County Tournament held at VCSU and to Dustin Kasowski and AJ Punton on being named to the Barnes County All-Tournament Team.

Gabby Ketterer (Gr 8), Ashten Hannig (Gr. 7), Ethan Wenzel (Gr. 6) and BriEl-le Killoran (Gr. 5) will be representing Ma-ple Valley at the Barnes County Spelling Bee at VCSU on Tuesday, February 6th.
