The word TLALPAN comes from two náhuatl-origin words: Tlalli- earth and Pan- on; nevertheless, it has been added the word “Firme” (Firm), and it stayed as “Place of Firm Earth”. There, the first human settlement at the Mexico’s basin was recorded: Cuicuilco, which civilization was finished after volcano Xitle’s erup-tion. Tlalpan is located towards the south of the Federal District and has a 310-km surface.

Places of interest at Tlalpan’s Historical Center:

Tlalpan’s History Museum (Museo de Historia de Tlalpan) (1) – The History Museum of Tlalpan is found at the building known as “La Casona” in English “The Big House”. That construction dates back to 1874, and is considered a historical monument since 1986 by the National Institution of Anthropology and History. In some occasions, diverse artistic manifestations are offered there. Location: Plaza de la Constitución 10, Col. Centro de Tlalpan. 54859048.

House of the Count of Regla (Casa del Conde de Regla) (2) – It Dates back to the 18th century and it belonged to the Count of Regla Mr. Pedro Romero de Terreros, a rich miner that worked the mountain of Hidalgo and gave origin to the Nacional Monte de Piedad (for loans). It conserves in its façade a triple-arcade quarry porch and a fountain called “Pila de la Conchita”. Location: Congreso 20 corner to Galeana, Col. Centro Tlalpan.

Peace Market (Mercado de la Paz) (3)– Unique Porfiriato-period market at the Federal District, it can be found behind the Building of the Delegación Tlalpan (municipal district). Victoria and Congreso, Col. Centro Tlalpan 55733734.

Parish church of San Agustín de las Cuevas (4) – It was built by Franciscan friars between 1637 and 1647, at the place where the Dominican friars’ Hospice was found.

House Frisaac (5) – It was started to be built at the 19th century and was finished at the beginnings of the 20th. It was built by Mr. Jesús Pliego, president of the Tlalpan’s city council in 1900; it belonged to Adolfo Lopez Mateos’ family. Today, it houses the institute Javier Barros Sierra, in which several artistic and culturtal activities are carried out. Location: Plaza de la Constitución, corner to Moneda col. Currency House (Casa de Moneda) (6) – Its construction dates back to the 18th century. It was Government Palace seat and by States Congress decree the Currency House was installed there, which worked from 1828 to 1830. It also was used as quarter of several Mexico’s history politicians. Today, it is the Daytime Secondary School 29 Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Location: Moneda 11 and 13, col. Centro de Tlalpan. 55736274.

Office of the Municipal District (7) – The building currently occupied by Tlalpan’s Municipal District was built at the end of the 19th century and the settlers helped to its construction with stones, wood and labour force. Location: Plaza de la Constitución 1 Col. Centro de Tlalpan. 5655 6024.

Main Garden (Jardín Principal) (8) – Its ornamentation was in charge of the local population in 1872. It is decorated with hero busts; some were made by Ernesto Tamariz. Inside it, the “Arbol de los Colgados” (the hanged tree) can be observed, which goes us back to Maximiliano’s period when the General Tomas O’Horan spent his time hanging bandits and liberals in the trees of the center.

Chata House (Casa Chata) (9) – Building constructed in the 18th century. It is said that there it was where Sor Juana Inés der la Cruz wrote her famous “rodandillas”, house of the first saint St. Felipe de Jesús and Museum of “Charrería” (a traditional Mexican party where the main character is the horse) until 1960. It was called “Casa Chata” because its entrance is octagonal. Today, part of the facilities of the Center of Researches and Superior Studies of Social Anthropology (in Spanish CIESAS) are installed there.

Mexico’s Pontiff University (Universidad Pontifícia de México) (10) –It has a library and is located in Victoria, 98 col. Centro de Tlalpan 55730600 / 55730571.

Ecological Park Juana de Asbaje (11) – It was inaugurated on April 8, 1999 in aid of the community of Tlalpan with cultural and recreational purposes. Fruit trees can be appreciated, as well as eagles at the top of the cedars. There is the access to the Center for Environmental Education “El Teporingo”. Located in Moneda 1, col. Centro de Tlalpan.
