Hernan Cortes planned the conquest of the Baja California Peninsula from here and it is where numerous brigantines departed form eastern lands. During the 16th century, the Spanish took advantage of the geographical features of the bay and established a port and the first shipyard in the Americas. The harbor was named Manzanillo in 1825, after the native flower of the area. Beautiful port who’s growth has benefited the travel industry with the construction of important hotel com-plexes, as well as top level golf courses.

The destination has two main áreas, Downtown where commercial areas are located, and the hotel zone, situated in the Peninsula of Santiago, dividing the two bays of this tourist destination: Manzanillo (in the south) and Santiago (in the north).

The Sailfish Sculpture by the Mexican artist Sebastián stands out splendidly at the end of the boardwalk in the “heart” of the city. This work of art does justice to the harbor, which is considered as the “Sailfish Capital of the World”.

Its tranquil beaches, like La Audiencia and San Pedrito, offer relaxation and a chance to dream, while its open bea-ches, like Campos and Olas Altas, are an invitation to surf and live to the extreme.

Sport fishingManzanillo is known as the Sailfish Capital of the World. It is the host city for the Dorsey International Tournament and as a result, sport fishing became internationally popu-lar. Sailfish and dorado can be caught all year round, while marlin and tuna fish abound in March.

Manzanillo’s advantage over other harbors is that a short 15-minute trip from land is all that is required for visitors to start fishing. The International Sailfish Tourna-ment takes place every year in November and the National Tournament is held in February. For information: Conventions and Visitors Bureau E-mail: [email protected]

GastronomyColima cuisine is tasty and varied and is usually based on fish and shellfish. An example of this is zarandeado fish (grilled fish stuffed with shrimp and tomato-chili sauce), the grill roasted red snapper and the Colima marinated fish (ceviche) with sailfish, sawfish or grouper ground meat, all accompanied with tortilla or tostadas (tortilla chips). Visitors may also submerge in the culinary adven-ture and samople the regional cuisine such as “tatemado” which is pig’s spine dressed with chilis and spices. However, visitors can also choose international cuisine.
