The Spectrum is a project designed for the SSEF competition, for which the use of steel was to be emphasized in a creative and functional way. The project was located is Monaco, rising out of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a space for social gatherings allowing visitors to contemplate the vibrant scene of the surroundings, while they are engaged in the experience of a swelling wave. The seamless transition from water to glass creates a sense of rhythm and harmony. The reflection of natural and artificial lighting partially camouflages the structure making the Spectrum a dynamic space.

The overall structure mimics the shape of a wave, and is lifted by asymmetrical three-dimensional steel trusses. Tensioned cables suspend the floor, which floats on top of the water. A glass roof rests on steel beams and cross bracing cables. A pile foundation system supports the structure to resist dynamic loading that can occur due to water movement.

This project illustrates a small pavilion designed for the cold climate. Its building construction incorporates light wood frame with double insulated walls; a concrete slab on grade level that allows to create a thermal mass within the building; and vented roofs. The hexagonal shape of the room allows for a panoramic view of the landscape making the small pavilion feels grand and enjoyable.

This project was designed to be a multi-purpose building located in the heart of Toronto at the intersection of College Street and Spadina Avenue.

PHASE 1 – URBAN FORM & ATMOSPHEREAn individual analysis of the site was produced to reflect its character and context. Through this exercise, my intention was to contrast two of the main neighborhoods, which are separated by Spadina Avenue: to the east, one can find the University of Toronto campus with high-rise buildings and broader avenues; while to the west, Kensington Market emerges with its vivid atmosphere, narrow and crowed streets, and low-rise buildings.

PHASE 2 – DESIGN PROPOSALMy design approach aimed to create a building that would make possible the encounter of different neighborhoods. By setting the building back, my intention was to create a public space at the corner that would also become an extension of the program inside, mimicking the Kensington market idea, while allowing for freedom of circulation, inspired by the campus scheme. A stepped public corner gives access the “cultural platform”, where a glazing facade cantilevers out as a floating object showcasing at the same time the Art Gallery and the Concert Hall, therefore establishing a visual connection and interaction between the public and the urban environment.

This project was designed as a masterplan proposal and a more detailed design development of a selected portion of the Recreational Greenbelt located around the Angus Glen Golf Course in Markham, Ontario. The masterplan proposal intended to urbanize the surroundings of the golf course creating places of leisure and gathering, housing, working and cultural spaces, while bridging the local community and the exclusive golf community together. Within the masterplan, a site parcel of 50x200m was further developed. The chosen site parcel emphasizes where the intended bridging of the programs happens. At one end, it is a hotel, the clubhouse, a spa, a restaurant and villas. In the middle, are the golf course and a civic square with broad steps that can be used for viewing and leisure. On the opposite side, it is the multi-purpose ribbon containing housing and retail, following the topography of the golf course.

Bike and pedestrian tracks were created all through the perimeter of the golf course linking the various programs and permeating the buildings under the pilotis. A recreational walkway was created between the multi-purpose ribbon and the golf course, where a strip of wetland serves as a means of cleansing and reusing the stormwater within the site, such as for golf and farmland irrigation.

The living Bridge project is an attempt to rehabilitate the Toronto City Airport site while connecting the city to the Toronto Island and the various proposed habitats. The pedestrian bridge undulates and permeates the landscape offering the walkers a place of delight and refuge. The bridge is very organic which blends well with the environment. Its structure emphasizes its rhythm resembling the spine of an animal, or the veins of a leaf.Along the bridge path, the walkers can experience the magnificent views of the city and of the smaller islands, seat under a wavy canopy, or descend to floating platforms designed to accommodate social gatherings, and teaching/research sessions.

The Amazonian Oasis was designed as a refuge in the middle of the Amazonian rainforest. Its architecture blends within the surroundings and uses a vernacular typology consisted by the use of locally available materials, such as bamboo, and the utilization of a local construction technique known as “palafitas”, which raises the structure from the water on poles.

Wide openings and high ceilings allow for cross ventilation and air convection, helping to alleviate the heat from the humidity.

Rhythm and dynamism of openness and closeness created by the bamboo allow for a brilliant effect of natural sun light into the interior.

This private residence is to be situated in Nordegg, Alberta, just outside of the National Park Boundary between Banff and Jasper. The project was submitted for the 2010 Canadian Magazine Awards of Excellence. The house is to be a retirement home for a mother and a part-time/vacation property for her son. Each occupant is to have a fully functional unit with an open floor plan that allows for a flexible layout arrangement within the space. For the competition entry, I worked in a team of three where I was able to collaborate with the presentations drawings including all the maps, site plan, floor plan and elevations.

The project for the expansion of Edmonton International Airport is currently under

construction. As the capital of the province of Alberta, Edmonton wants to increase

the number of passengers traveling within Canada and mainly coming or connecting from the United States. As an architectural

assistant, I was able to collaborate with the planning and some sectional drawings

where different scales of artwork would be placed. Also, a guided site visit helped

me to envision and understand the different parts of this grand project, as well as the

logic behind how to operate an airport.

This project was developed during a work term in Brazil. The project features a multi-disciplinary tourist and leisure attraction composed by a Resort and a Residential Condo. The residential low-rise buildings consist of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments that can be easily accessed by each owner. The Resort complex consists of 4 hotel units, which are open to tourists, as well as pools, restaurant, bar, tennis courts, football courts, fitness center, SPA, etc. The design of ILOA aimed to connect all these spaces in a very enjoyable manner. Gathering spaces, green promenades, reflecting pools and wood pergolas all contribute to the quality of the space. As an architectural intern, I was given the opportunity to create the residential and administrative units, as well as collaborate in the overall the master plan. All 3D renderings were done by a third party.

Google New York City is located at the gigantic former Port Authority building occupying an entire city block, just adjacent to the Chelsea Market and the Highline, offering great views to the city. The company’s challenge is to gradually occupy the entire building within the next 25 years, based on a design strategy that aims to transform the massive infrastructure into a sustainable building. As an architectural student I was given the opportunity to collaborate in various aspects of the design process, ranging from site survey to presentations and Strategic Planning. I was involved in the creation of programmatic and circulation diagrams that would reflect the most current studies of program occupancy based on lease expiration dates, permanent areas, as well as new proposed vertical circulation.

Starting with site visits to the 11th floor of the building, my job was to survey and document some of the existing conditions,

such as finishes, furniture, as well as data/power outlets, for the renovation of

portion of the floor that would be taken by Google. Subsequently, I was able to collaborate with the new micro-kitchen layout, choice and presentation of new

loose furniture throughout the floor, including the thematic terraces, as well as

working drawings.

Google is establishing its presence in the 60th and 61st floors of the Shanghai World Financial Center. As an architectural student, I was given the opportunity to briefly collaborate in the design stage of the project offering different layout possibilities and helping with presentations. The idea of creating different neighborhoods also apply to the Google Shanghai project, where different themes are brought to the spaces in order to create different atmospheres.

More specifically, besides coordinating all the presentation packages, I was able to contribute with the development of the building envelope by selecting and detailing architectural materials and systems while addressing design and cost.

In addition, I was able to create along with a sports specialist a detailed games overlay package for the building addressing all the different uses that will take place during the Pan American Games.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 will be hosted in 6 cities and 7 different stadia across Canada. These stadia are all in different conditions of use since they have been built in different times. For the purpose of the World Cup, the goal was to produce a comprehensive package with functional program for the games overlay, so as to investigate the event feasibility of each venue and therefore be able to identify areas of addition or demolition. As an architectural intern, I was responsible for the creation of this package under the supervision of a sports specialist, which included the production of an extensive set of standardized drawings for all stadia where area plans were created using the latest technology in Revit.

The redevelopment of the Lansdowne Park in Ottawa includes the construction of the south stands

in addition to the renovation of the existing north stands. The new addition on the south counts with

a curvilinear veil of glulam beams that host the programmatic functions.

As an architectural intern, I helped to produce presentation material and construction drawings in Revit for both permit and tender sets, as well

as to create interior design drawings for the suite level including interior elevations, millwork details, material choices and presentation sample boards.

Cannon Design put on an exhibit for Doors Open Toronto 2012. The Office was open to the public and the exhibit aligned with the overall Doors Open theme of the War of 1812. By acknowledging the 200 years of history since the end of the War and how the city has become today a reflection of pivotal decisions, made at identifiable moments in time, the office decides to project itself into the next 200 years and proposes a installation that superimposes speculations of what the city fabric can still become. The office space on the 12th floor provided a privileged 360 degree panoramic view of Toronto. With historical events in mind, each corner of the office housed a speculation of the city fabric specific to that view. Our group’s corner faced the entertainment district and the waterfront. Our proposal imagines what Toronto’s street realm could look like if some of the buried historical rivers were to resurface, reconciling the built and natural environments while also providing significantly upgraded urban parkland.
