Click “NEXT” after having took vision of the contract. In the following window you click “NEXT” to accept the default installa-tion directory or click on “CHANGE” to select a personalized one.

Choose the type of installation and press “NEXT”!

For this operating system it is neces-sary to update at least to Service Pack 2, before you proceed to the installa-tion. DevStudio provides the most recent Service Pack in the CD/DVD of the pro-gram.

Follow the suggestions. Choose “FINISH” to exite the wizard.

Now you can execute Power Plotter / Proof. Particular advice for W2000:

Installation procedure of

PowerPlotter / ProofPowerPlotter / Proof

IMPORTANT: read carefully for a correct installation

To start the installation of Power Plotter/Proof it is enough to insert the CD/DVD in the CD/DVD reader and to follow the instructions given by the program. If it didn't run automatically, you will have to launch manually the file STARTER.EXE that can be found in the root of the CD/DVD. Double click on My Computer, then on the icon of the CD/DVD and then la-unch STARTER.EXE. If you intend to install a non-demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation.

The “BACK” and “NEXT” buttons allow you in every phase of the installation to return to the preceding step or to advance to the following one.

Remove Procedure:

First start

Power Plotter/Proof: S

Direct Prints: S

If you intend to remove Power Plot-ter/Proof follow the procedure as fol-lows.Do not cancel the directory of the pro-gram without first having uninstalled it. Open the “Start” Menu of Windows, then the menu “Settings” and the menu “Control Panel”. Double click on "Add/Remove Program" (accord-ing to the operating system you'll find different names such) and look for the item related to Power Plotter/Proof, click the button Add/Remove and fol-low the instructions. Now you can can-cel the directory Power Plotter/Proof.

Canceling the directory of Power Plot-ter/Proof you will loose all report files and previews of print jobs. If you wish to preserve them, just look for the file CODE.MDB and sample folder (they should be in the folder c:\\Devstudio\ PowerPlotter/Proof) and preserve them in another folder before proceed-ing to cancellation and eventually put them to their place after having in-stalled the RIP again.

After having rebooted the PC you are ready to start the program for the first time. You will notice three new icons on the desktop (you can also find them in the start menu / Programs / Power Plot-

ter/Proof):

tarts the main pro-gram.

llows to create and to manage the Virtual Printer of Power Plotter/ Proof.

On first start up of RIP, the "Program Protection” screen is displayed and re-ports your Serial Code (light grey).

Now you must register the software to receive the Activation Code (it will never change) for your hardware key.

You have 30 days or 120 software runs to complete registration, after which the software will operate in a DEMO version with restrictions on the max print dimensions and images printed with demo written on them until activation.

In this case, by clicking on the button "Product Registration”, the following screen appears where we kindly ask you to compile the fields required by our technicians to contact you, if nec-essary. (The data inserted are subject to privacy legislation and will under no circumstances be used without your authorisation).

IMPORTANT: Please insert a valid e-mail, since this address will be used as password for your registration, and for eventual following communica-tions. At the end of the filling of the form you will have several options. If you are connected to the Internet you will find the image above, and you will only have to click on “Register Now!”

In this way, the system will insert the Activation Code directly on the “Pro-gram Protection” screen and just click the Next button to begin working. To check the registration data, select the menu (?) and then “Program Protec-tion”.

If the PC is not connected to the Internet you will have to click on the “FAX” button, and then you will have to send it via Fax or via e-mail to the ad-dress written in the module itself.

Of course to receive the activation code via e-mail or via Fax, you must fill the form with your e-mail or Fax number.

Once you will have received the acti-vation code, insert it in the Program Protection screen and click Continue, the program will be enabled now

You must use the second solu-tion if the computer on which RIP is installed is not connected to the internet, but you have the Internet connection on another PC and you don't want to use the previous solu-tion.If you connect to the web site

, choose “Software Registration” and the following screen is displayed on which you can insert your Serial Code, which is attached us-ing an adhesive label on the left side of the package under the Quick Manual (this manual)

The serial code that you will find will still be the old one, and the serial code fields will appear written in light gray, and not modifiable. Click on “Upgrade Version/Add module”, you will find the following window:

In the white space under the phrase “I have the Upgrade Code”, you must write the code that you received with this package. You can find this code attached using an adhesive label on the left side of the package.

Then press the button “Generate Acti-vation Code” and continue inserting the data that the system requires. The program license is valid for the in-stallation in one PC only, if you have to make another installation on a new PC after a disk format, or after a damage of the previous PC, you can proceed (after having inserted the dongle) to a new registration, if required. When you register again the system will rec-ognize you as a registered user, and will ask you the E-mail address you

stused the 1 time, as verification code.

When you purchase an upgrade to a superior version, follow the instruc-tions inside the new package. By upgrading the version, the old Serial Code is deleted from our Database and is therefore no longer active.

To activate the upgrade that you have bought, you must install the CD/DVD that you received in the box or you can download the latest version available from our website .

After this procedure open Power Plot-ter/Proof, click on the Question Mark “?” menu, select “Program Protec-tion”, you will find the following win-dow:

Adding Printer Drivers

Now you must install the drivers of you printers. After the program activation the interface of Power Plotter/Proof will open, and being the first run you will see the following interface:

From here you can select the drivers that you need to in-stall Either you can install all drivers, or, for more simplic-ity, we recommend to install only those tightly necessary.

It is possible to add new drivers any-time you want, you can use the present standard ones from the installation CD/DVD or updated ones downloaded from our Internet site, therefore you have to choose the button and then find the path where the file had been saved before. It is also possi-ble to remove an installed driver click-ing on the blue link close to the name of the driver in the window of the settingson the right side; this will open a new window with the list of the installed driv-ers from which you can select one and remove it by clicking the key remove.

A lot of printers also have the tab Ad-vanced in which it is possible to set fur-ther print characteristics, for example type of feeding (roll or sheet, the se-lected tray or roll, print borders etc.)

.

BROWSE

In the window nearby there's the but-ton "i" (information), it will give you pre-cious information about the driver set-tings and the selected print media. Mainly describes the paper setting that has to be selected on the plotter when that type of print media will be loaded. From the item “PRINTERS” you can se-lect the port on which PowerPlotter/ Proof will send the calculated print jobs. The destination of the print job can be chosen passing through the al-ready installed system printers.

Otherwise it is possible to insert the IP address of a net printer, selecting the relative port (generally 515 for the LPR and 9100 for the Jet Direct). Using the printer on a direct IP you should also give it a name so that you can find eas-ily to what it corresponds and you don't have to remember each time the full IP address. Using the Windows print queue you work with the Windows spooler and the program will guaran-tee a faster processing, while when you use the direct IP address the pro-gram will process as fast as the printer is receiving the data.

Virtual Printer use / installationUSE: Direct printing from the application, Printing of documents non compatible with Power Plotter/Proof.The “Virtual Printer” is a printer that has to be installed on the Operating System from the Power Plotter/Proof installation CD/DVD; it gives you the possibility to print directly from your graphic programme on the printer that you want by using our RIP rather than the normal printer driver, thus making the most of the superior power and print quality of Power Plotter/Proof, while maintaining the same user-friendliness as a common printer. To sum up: this printer uses the Power Plotter/Proof engine, but it can also be used as a normal Windows driver without the need to open the RIP, for example when you need to print Cad applications or other. The print quality you will achieve is exactly the same as you would obtain by printing from inside the RIP, furthermore the print is stored in the RIP print reports.

VIRTUAL PRINTER USE FLOW

How to save a configuration from Power Plotter / ProofThese settings can be saved as default con-figuration for an easier use afterwards, or can be associated to a Virtual Printer (see Virtual Printer). To save the configuration you can use the shortcut "F6" or you can choose the relative item in the menu “Configurations" / "Save Current Configura-tion", to save with a new name in the corre-spondent window coming up (or you can choose it from the list and overwrite the old one) and click “Save”.

When printing from the virtual printer it is necessary to set the page size so that it corresponds to the dimensions of the document you wish to print, for example if the document is 50x70 cm, you will need to set a customised page of the same size, otherwise you can select one of the standard dimensions. The virtual printer must be installed on the machine where Rip Power Plotter/Proof is located and can be shared in the network, you can install infinite copies with different settings. The virtual printer must be installed on the machine where Rip Power Plotter/Proof is located and can be shared in the network, you can install infinite copies with different settings. The settings displayed on the print interface of the virtual printer (figure 1) are those that were previously created from inside the RIP with the procedure described in the previous paragraph.During the installation, a Wizard will start enabling to automatically create 4 settings that will be immediately found in the virtual printer.

Figure 1

The virtual printer appears on your system as any other printer. Following the procedure described here you will find a new printer in the printer holder of your system (usually called PowerPlotterPrinter). When you select print from the application you can then select this printer and set its options.

9

Page 10: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

Virtual printer installation procedure. The configuration of the virtual printer starts up auto-matically at the end of the RIP installation and can be called up from the “file”, install/edit printer menu.

When you select it, the following interface will appear:

You can choose two kinds of printers:

uses a virtual port cre-ated by the Rip itself, it was the standard port until version 6.1 of the RIP, but it has been sub-stituted by the LPR because it can have some problems in network environment with Domain Sarver, and does not work under 64bit or Vista Operating Systems. It is still present for backward compatibility (port name PPPx).

uses the standard TCP/IP windows port and connectes to the Rip using a LPD Server. This version is compatible to any Operating system and environment. It is the one that is istalled by default by the RIP (port name Ipxx).

When you have set a valid configuration (in this case it is called A4 Photo) and Print is set in the options, your print job will be printed on the printer set within the configuration A4 Photo, otherwise if you have set Store in the Rip PP queue, the print job will be put in stand-by in the Power Plotter/Proof queue, and finally if you have set Print and Store, it will be printed first and then kept in the print queue for any further printing.

In the configuration interface displayed above it is possible to add or cancel virtual print-ers (in the case displayed there are 2 different virtual printers) and select all the default values that will be displayed in the print interface of the virtual printer, all these parame-ters can be modified through the interface displayed on the side.

1. PPP:

2. LPR:

The virtual printer may be used both to print from the application by using one of the existing settings (without the RIP running), if you use the print setting, both for transfer the file from the application to the RIP workspace, if you use the store setting, as well as to generate a PS file (see below).

10

Page 11: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

If the action “Store in the Rip PP queue” is set, the print job will be put in stand-by in the Power Plotter/Proof queue.

From inside the RIP, by right-clicking on the print job displayed on the print process column, located on the far right hand-side of Power Plotter/Proof, the following menu will appear from which it is possible to load the file on to a new empty workspace, ready to be printed or laid out with other files (if, on the contrary, you select “import” instead of “load”, the document will be imported into the existing workspace along with any other existing documents, and in this case the print settings will remain those with which the interface was already configured).

By using this procedure you can move the print job from the application to inside the RIP.

Break-down of the available options by right-clicking on the print coming from the application.

Virtual Printer

Win or Mac Application Power Plotter / Proof

How to create a PS file from WindowsTo generate a PostScript file to be read by Power Plotter/Proof, you have to print on the virtual printer from any program.

You need this PS file when you wish to print a file format not supported by Power Plotter/Proof; so you have to convert it into a compatible format. The compatible formats are the following: TIFF, BMP, JPG, PICT, TGA, EPS, PS, PDF, HP-GL, HP-GL2 (driver HP-GL2 compatible up to the version for Designjet HP1050 plotter). The best formats for photographic images and rendering are TFF or JPG.

11

Page 12: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

The TIFF format should be better since it keeps maximum image quality (also when ZIP or LZW compression is activated) and gives the possibility to include your ICC profiles in order to keep colours matching to your screen (if your screen is correctly calibrated). The JPG format also keeps rather good quality (even if it may give some faults on highly contrasted borders) with the advantage of generating small files that can easily be sto-red and moved. In both cases it is advisable to maintain a resolution of at least 60 dpi (for final print di-mension) and for photographic images with tinges or gradual passages of colours; a re-solution of at least 100 dpi for rendering or also images with very small details and highly contrasted borders, and finally, 150 dpi for text on white background.

When you are working on software producing vector or raster formats (e.g. Co-® ® ® ® ® ®rel Draw , Adobe Illustrator , Macromedia Freehand etc.) or with DTP pro-

® ® ® ®grams (Adobe PageMaker Quark Xpress etc.) it will be preferable to export the file in EPS or in PDF. These formats do not rasterize vector data (as TIFF or JPG formats etc. would do) and this gives the possibility to keep the highest quality on text and line objects. To be sure to have readable text objects you should export, if possible, a file using the command “Include all fonts, or otherwise convert text to curves (you should know that you will get bigger files). When you work on software that is not able to generate EPS files (e.g. Microsoft ® Word®) the best thing to do is to print the document by using the virtual printer Power-Plotter Printer and selecting the option Print to File.

Setting for prints from Autocad ®In some special cases it is not advisable to print directly from vector programs because of a low output quality (e.g. for printers without optimized drivers or without HP-GL2 translator) or you could have problems to ultimate printing because of too large print di-mensions due to driver limits or too low printer memory. For that reason, it might be useful to print with the RIP of Power Plotter/Proof.In this case you use a similar procedure as the one described above until the phase where you create a Virtual Port PPPX/IPXX, with the difference that you have to use a PS printer from the ADI drivers of AutoCAD instead of a PS printer from Windows™. This due to a lack of the Windows OS while communicating with the AutoDesk pro-gram, which fixes a maximum size at 6m, moreover the time needed to generate the file might be very long. Using the ADI driver, the maximum size is 15m x 914mm.In order to create a PS printer from AutoCAD you have to select the menu Plotter Manager: and activate “and activate “Add a Plotter Wizard” (add a plotter with a guided procedure).”

12

Page 13: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

From the list of models you have to choose Adobe PostScript Level2

The next window will ask you to import a previously configured file, but since you do not have any you can go ahead.

Follow the instructions step-by-step and select “My Computer” (local machine).

Now you have to choose the destination port of the print file:If you wish to send the file directly to Power Plotter/Proof you will have to select one of the Virtual Ports PPPX/IPXX you have created before.

13

Page 14: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

Now you have to give a name to the so created printer and set the properties:

Set the units and output resolution and click the button “Edit Plotter Configuration”...First of all, set the resolution from “Graphics”:

Set a high value for the colours and at least 600 dpi for resolution (or even higher if the printer supports it) on “Vector Graphics”; for dithering set, if possible, a very diffused dithering (which gives you softer images) otherwise use one of those you have available.

14

Page 15: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

Due to a defect on AutoCAD 2000 it can still happen that some images will be moved in low resolution, so you can try to close the program and proceed printing once more.

The second step might be to set a personal list of paper dimensions. To do so, select the item “Custom Page Sizes” (personalized dimensions) and click on ADD. You will start a new Wizard giving you the possibility to create default paper sheets that will be shown in the paper-list during the print process.

Create a new format:

On “Raster” put all values on a right position setting maximum quality.

15

Page 16: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

There will be different limits depending on the AutoCAD version in use.Set dimensions and borders in the two interfaces above and click “Next”. You should put the border limits on 0 because the RIP will set them automatically during the print process.

Clicking “Next” you will have to give a name to the paper format and define a file in which you want to save it (in our case it will be the file that defines the previously created printer).

Set dimensions, width and length.

Then you have to fix the format that will use this dimension, fix it to appear under the settings of “Sheet of paper” “Roll” or “Width”. Now you can use this new type of printer driver and you will print your AutoCAD jobs with the powerful RIP.

16

Page 17: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

How to print from Macintosh or other not Microsoft systems. There are various possibilities to obtain these conditions, the most convenient are the use of a Windows Server or a PC MacLan® because they guarantee more speed and a better handling of the print process, printing from the LPR port, instead, has the ad-vantage of being integrated in Power Plotter/Proof and therefore there are no added costs, though it may be slower.Printing with LPR port integrated in Power Plotter/ProofPower Plotter/Proof has an internal active LPR print server without the need for confi-guration from the user's side. This function allows to print directly on the RIP from other operating systems that do not communicate with Windows. The supported systems are: UNIX, Linux, Sun and MacOS 9 and X.To Install an LPR printer on Mac a LPR virtual printer must be installed on PC also (this system will not work if you use the PPPx ports).First of all, it is necessary to connect and configure the TCP/IP protocol of both Mac and PC in the network.

Under OsX this operation can be done under Print Center clicking on Add Printer choosing “LPR/LPD Printer” from the dropdown list, then go to step 2).

Under MacOS 9 you can use the following procedure. Further run on Mac the program called “PRINTERS FROM DESKTOP UTILITY”. The first time there will be the following window or select a new one:

1a.

1b.

We want to remember further settings inside Power Plotter/Proof concerning colour settings.

When you launch a print job from Autocad there will be a message from the program indicating that the printer port is already in use. This is due to the fact that the PPPX/IPXX port set on Autocad is the same one used by Windows Power Plotter Printer. This is only a reminder and will not influence the issue, you can simply ignore it.

Here you have to choose from the Printer list (LPR) and in the drop-down menu “AdobePS” or “LaserWriter 8“ (only the way of activating the printer from Select Resources changes).

17

Page 18: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

2. .You have to select the PPD of the printer and the printing pathYou can find the PPD on the installation CD/DVD of the Power Plotter/Proof under the folder PoScript Printer and the subfolder MAC.The printer path is selected from the following interface:

Insert the IP address of the computer where you have installed the Power Plotter/Proof in Printer Address, under the item Queue you must inster the exact name of the Virtual Port created on the PC (for example IP01) In this way, the print jobs launched from Mac will be printed directly with the settings saved in the chosen configuration.Otherwise, by filling in an incorrect name the print jobs will be stored in the print queue and remain there waiting for the user to operate. The button “verify” controls the address entered.Clicking on “OK” will show up a dialogue window where you can insert the name of the printer from desktop that we will use to print from Power Plotter/Proof.

Going ahead in the Wizard (clicking OK) it appears the next screen:

18

Page 19: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

Now you can print on any printer supported by Power Plotter/Proof directly from any Mac program.

Otherwise it is possible to print from Mac when you have configured a Power Plot-ter/Proof printer shared by a PC using a software like PC MacLan® from Miramar® or a Windows Server NT 4.0 or later with printer administrator AppleTalk.

How to use PC MacLan® to share printers in Mac platforms. First of all, you have to create a virtual printer on the PC where you have installed PC MacLan®.Take the file POWERPLO.PPD from the installation CD/DVD of Power Plotter/Proof, printer folder “Postscript Printer\MAC\” and copy it to main folder of Maclan that should be in “c:\program files\miramar\PC MACLAN for “Windows 2000\” (or similar depen-ding on version and language). As a next step, go to printer manager and select the Virtual printer you want to move to Mac.Clicking with the right mouse button select the item “Apple Talk Sharing”.

At this point a PC MacLan® window will appear.

19

Page 20: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

Here you have to assign a name, choose the format ps and make sure that the destination is Windows Printer, that the name of the printer is the previously selected Power Plotter Printer and that in the list of the PPD files appears the name “powerplo.ppd” and that it is selected.

Click “Options” and select Send as is.

Your printer will be present now in the list of Apple Talk printers and will be visible in Select Resources (for OS9) or in Print Center for OSX. From the installation CD/DVD of Power Plotter/Proof you have to select the PPD once again and now it will be possible to print from any Mac program directly through the RIP.

Printing by sharing Mac with NT4.0 server, 2000 server or 2003 Server Using a PC with a Windows Server OS (version 4.0 sp6 or later) you can make a Power Plotter printer that you can share in a Mac network using the AppleTalk protocol.

Usually in Windows Server Mac services are already activated, if this should not hap-pen you need to activate them through the Windows Services:

20

Page 21: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

Then look for the item related to Mac services:

Now create the Power Plotter/Proof printer in the Server following the procedure we described above and install to the Server itself the Power Plotter Printer Manager from the installation CD/DVD of Power Plotter/Proof.

You made a printer you can share and, having activated the Apple Print services, each Mac will be connected and you will find it in Select Resources (for System 9) or in Print Center (for System X).

In System 9 select the AdobePS printer or LaserWriter and then associate it to the PPD from the installation CD/DVD in the folder Postscript Printer\Mac (to be unzipped). In System x instead you have to open Print Center and select “Add Printer” / Apple Talk. Also in this case you have to associate the same PPD.

21

Page 22: Manuale rapido Plotter-Power Proof (inglese) (05-11-08 ... · demonstrative version it is necessary to insert the USB key before starting the installation. The “BACK” and “NEXT”

Note for the use of the printer drivers of Power Plotter PrinterThe virtual printer that we have just described is a PostScript printer, and therefore has a slightly different handling in comparison to the traditional Windows printers.

There are no settings concerning quality, source of the paper or destination. You can only set the paper format, the printing resolution and some specific PostScript fun-ctions (for example the choice to include fonts or not in the print job, option to be prefe-rably kept active). Do not modify them if you are not an experienced user.

Usually when you print on a peripheral from any Windows program, you will have to set the print format corresponding to the paper format present in the printer. Using the Vir-tual Printer instead it doesn't work exactly this way.

The paper format on the Virtual Printer must correspond to the original dimension of the document, so that on the RIP arrives an image without borders that can be re-organized then as you like during the printing process. If you do not find a correspon-ding format among the standards you have to select the personalized format and ma-nually insert the width and height values.

With regards to the settings of the resolution, please note that we do not talk about the print resolution, which will be set in the configuration of the RIP, but about the quality with which the data is sent to the workspace of Power Plotter/Proof. A larger value me-ans more precision of lines, but at the same time bigger files and the risk not to succeed in printing or, in any case, to have to wait much longer for the job to be finished. Gene-rally it is not necessary to change the default settings, however, in case you get pro-blems (of quality or of slowness) you can operate this item by lifting or lowering the cor-responding value.
